Mindi Schmitz Executive Director
First off, let me re-introduce myself. I’m Mindi Schmitz the newly selected Executive Director of The Arts Center. I have been an active member of the Jamestown community for over 20 years. I’ve served as a member of the Jamestown Public School Board, Jamestown Branch of AAUW, a founding member of the Two Rivers Activity Center Board, and a Jamestown Park & Recreation Commissioner. Over the years, my now 14-year-old daughter Madison, and I participate, enjoy and appreciate all that The Arts Center has to offer. I am so excited about this opportunity. The Arts Center is a wonderful, important piece in the fabric of Jamestown. My plan is to build on its success. In order to do that, we need to cultivate and nurture relationships with current members and increase membership across our community. We are busy at The Arts Center! Coming off of two successful fundraisers. Our annual gala, “Wild for the Arts,” was a lot of fun and a great success despite the sub-zero weather and a hiccup with the booked band. Thanks Steve Kuykendall, Jon Beyer and Jeremy Gray otherwise known as “The Flickertails” for stepping up at the literal last minute to provide us with great music. The Gala Committee did such an amazing job planning, decorating and gathering silent and live auction items in order to make the event such a success—Thank You! And thanks to our in-house auctioneer Casey Stoudt for his enthusiasm and willingness to step up. February 14th was Giving Hearts Day. The Arts Center had its most successful Giving Hearts Day to date. Thank you to all the Giving Hearts who donated! As you will see in the newsletter, we have many upcoming events, performances, classes and exhibits. And rest assured, we are in the process of planning our Summer Series and our Downtown Arts Market for this summer. We are confident that summer will indeed make an appearance here eventually.
Thanks again and stay warm! Mindi Schmitz

Ryan Stander: Touching Photographs March 28 – April 27, 2019 If you have ever been in an antique store and spent time looking through shoeboxes of photographs you will enjoy this exhibition. The artist Ryan Stander invites viewers to consider human identity, memory, and the nature of photography, through the common photograph. With interactive installations and mixed-media work, Stander asks the viewer to engage the found photographic objects as unique meeting points of past and present, memory and identity, persistence and loss. Twenty years ago, the contents of a re-purposed Nike shoebox punctured something within the artist. Such a simple box of old photos filled with unfamiliar faces, disconnected stories, and suspended conversations still hanging in the air. With each photograph he fumbled through, grew a deeper realization of our shared humanity and mortality. Stander wondered then, and still does today, who are these people? What are they doing in this box? Will this be our fate as well? In our own photographs we recognize that time, that place, that event, and that face. That which was, remains in the photograph. Birthdays, holidays, and funerals all persist and linger (often outliving the subjects of their frames). Stories animate these objects across generations, Front Cover: Stacks Detail, Ryan Stander, mixed media but over time, the stories fade. Once Next Page: Stacks & Women Young, Ryan Stander, mixed media disconnected, these photographic objects rest silently in a curious amnestic state. Unable to speak, they are cut off from us with an insurmountable and ever expanding gulf of history passing between them and us. And yet, while we hold and look at these objects and faces, they still have a strange power to touch and remain with us in remarkable ways.
Following two related trajectories, this mixed-media exhibition uses the ordinary photograph to raise a variety of layered questions. One approach takes the form of a modern scientific archive that evokes ideas of history, the curator, and museum practices. The other approach draws out the more sentimental and ephemeral connections to memory and identity. By allowing a direct engagement with the photographic objects, viewers are also allowed to explore and consider the history and nature of the photographs themselves.
Lunch with the Artist Enjoy lunch with artist Ryan Stander Thursday, March 28, 2019, noon. A homemade lunch will be provided for $5 (or bring your own). RSVP for lunch by March 27 by calling 701-251-2496 Artist Bio: Originally from the farmlands of northwest Iowa, Ryan is a transplant to central North Dakota. He’s alternated his education between art and theology [MFA from the University of North Dakota, MA in Theology from Sioux Falls Seminary (SD), and a BA in Art from Northwestern College (IA)]. Drawing upon his theological background, the themes of memory, identity, and place often rise to the fore in his work. As a photographer and printmaker, his work has been exhibited internationally in South Africa, China, Central and South America; nationally in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts; and across the Upper-Midwest. Stander is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Minot State University, where he teaches photography and co-directs Flat Tail Press.
a look inside LEGACY BENCH Hansen Arts Park Installation scheduled for May Since the start of the year, some Heritage Centre and Ave Maria Village residents have been creating mosaics for their very own Hansen Arts Park Mosaic Bench. This ambitious project, called the Legacy Bench, was initiated to share the creativity of our elder artists while giving us the opportunity to highlight the Art for Life program. Each elder was asked to identify an “icon” that represented something of their life or passions. For instance, one elder was a teacher so her mosaic is an apple; another elder worked for Jamestown Hospital so her mosaic is the historic hospital logo; we have a John Deere tractor and an IH tractor, a pheasant, a favorite house cat and a significant tree. One elder has a wind farm on his property so his mosaic depicts wind towers. There is even a passionate University of Jamestown fan, so UJ will also be represented. When considered as a whole, the bench’s mosaics represent a snapshot of the Jamestown community and region—a perfect fit and addition to the other mosaics in the Hansen Arts Park. Logistically the 91” bench surfaces were divided into individual panels to allow elders manageable segments to work on. Each artist designed their own icon. Then they drew it out on paper, transferred it to mosaic mesh and then selected their tile colors. Then the fun of “puzzling” it all together has kept everyone busy. Some elders have finished their panels and others are still working on the background that will tie the design together. This project has far exceeded expectations and is a true manifestation of the Art for Life
mission, to alleviate the three plagues; loneliness, boredom and helplessness that can often afflict elders in care facilities We have been meeting two hours per week since early January and the elder-artists show up early for the activity. They don’t want to stop… even for lunch. They talk, laugh and reminisce about the topic of their mosaics and their designs. This project has been so fun and such a great success they are already talking about creating another mosaic for their facility. The idea that anyone, at any age, can create a beautiful and significant piece of public art can be a lesson for us all—we need only work together and anything is possible! Elders that have been participating in this special mosaic project include: Gene Cysewski, Laurel Gusaas, Bev Haugen, Robert Hertel, Orlee Howell, Phyllis Ibes, Hariett Kartes, Edna Kleingartner, Marge Lange, Frances Pendray, Loretta Piehl, Marion Stampka, Donna Tompkins, Florence Turdell, Grace Walz and Enid Wells. The materials for this bench were partially paid for by the Art for Life program funded by the North Dakota Council on the Arts. The mosaic will be ready for installation in May. Many thanks go to Dina Laskowski, a veteran mosaic artist (who last summer created an Arts Park bench in record time), for volunteering her time, expertise and witty personality to keep us on track throughout this project!
