From the director’s desk: This is a very exciting time to be a member of the Jamestown community. As I am fond of saying, the “stars are in alignment” for real growth for The Arts Center and our community as a whole. Lawrence Kopp Executive Director

Why, you may ask? In the big picture, North Dakota’s Governor Doug Burgum, through his Main Street Initiative, has made the livability, and vitality, of our communities a priority. Quality of life is key to the future growth of our state, and the arts are a huge component in making a community a great place to live. When the Governor visited Jamestown this fall, one of the handful of places he visited was The Arts Center. That speaks volumes as to the importance of the arts to the future of North Dakota. Here in Jamestown, we have our own Main Street Community Group that has been meeting since January. Convened by the Chamber of Commerce, and composed of representatives of civic organizations, the city government, the University of Jamestown and major local employers, we are working to address the challenges we face to grow our community. I say “we” because The Arts Center was one of the founding members of this group and is totally committed to using the arts in building a strong, vibrant community. And at The Arts Center, we are already taking tangible steps to build community through our programs. The new Downtown Arts Market is a way to bring all segments of Jamestown, and our region, together, building bonds and growing through experiencing the arts. In all of my career, I have never seen such excitement for a new series; the “buzz” surrounding the launch of the Arts Market is truly amazing! I think that this enthusiasm shows the need for arts programming that is accessible to all and at the same time brings us together as a community. That “bringing together,” that sharing of common experiences, of fellowship, is at the heart of what defines a community. And that also happens to be the vision of The Arts Center, using culture to build our community. I ask you to join us in support of our important work of making Jamestown a better place for us all.

Summertime Event Series to Bring the Downtown to Life What could possibly be more beautiful than a summer evening in North Dakota? A summer evening featuring live performances by the region’s finest musicians, arts activities for youth and adults, artisan vendors selling their wares, and fun, family activities shared with friends and neighbors, all in our very own Hansen Arts Park… that’s the best summer evening we can imagine… and it’s the new Downtown Arts Market! Every Thursday in June, July & August, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, the arts bring the Jamestown downtown to life with this exciting new series of events sure to offer something for everyone. The Boulder Pavilion stage is at the heart of Downtown Arts Market activities. Every Thursday, we will have the best in regional and local musicians, in every imaginable musical genre, performing at the Boulder Pavilion. Country, folk, blues, rock, polka, jazz, classical… we will have it all, performed by the finest musicians in the Northern Midwest. Along with live music, every Thursday will feature hands-on, arts activities for both youth and adults, led by our own artist-teachers. The Kids Korner (5:30 – 6:30 pm) for youth will feature activities from creating your own tie-dyed t-shirt to making that favorite of kids everywhere, slime! And for everyone else, we have Adult Arts (7:00 – 8:00 pm) with projects designed to channel your inner creativity! But that’s not all! Our “Market” features artisan vendors, plying their unique wares as well as seasonal produce, when available, from local farms. And we have a number of special arts projects and family fun events planned throughout the summer. On the stage, our popular Open Mic Night will be moving across the street in June & July; a Poetry Slam where local authors can share their rhymes, from sonnets to rap; and our Hot Dish Storytelling Contest, a perfect opportunity to share your story with the community. Art events include a chalk artist and our Graffiti Art Project, where everyone is welcome to “tag” the Arts Park. And we have tentatively scheduled a weekly quilting night with the quilters from Saint John’s Lutheran Church, where quilters of all ages and abilities are welcome. Three community quilts will be created to be raffled off throughout the summer. A “series within a series,” the Third Thursday of every month features special themed events tied to the exhibits on display in The Arts Center’s gallery. On June 21st we are Celebrating North Dakota’s Native American Culture, featuring Métis fiddler Ryan Keplin, a member of the International Fiddlers Hall of Fame, and acclaimed Native American dancer and flutist Kevin Locke. July 19th is a celebration of Our European Roots with a polka double bill, Matt Hodek & the Dakota Dutchmen and Julia Lee & Her White Rose Band. Finally, on August 16th, we explore America’s Homegrown Arts with the 17-member Fargo Moorhead Kicks Big Band and the Kicks Dixieland Band. The Downtown Arts Market is an exciting new addition to the Jamestown community! We hope to see all of you at the Hansen Arts Park this summer.

Summer Arts and Theater Camps A Perfect Way for Youth to Explore the Arts Summer is here, and with it, an annual tradition‌ our Annual Summer Arts Camp! Every summer, The Arts Center gives the youth of our community the opportunity to explore the arts in a more in-depth way than is normally available during the regular school year. For seven weeks in June, July & August, we offer weekly sessions in a variety of artistic mediums; there is something for everyone, taught by our own artistinstructors! Some of the areas students will be exploring include: making monsters in clay using hand building techniques; creating mixed media art using subjects from nature; the Japanese Gyotaku technique, printmaking with fish; art inspired by Prehistoric cave art; and the fiber arts, felting, weaving and knitting. This summer, we also are extremely happy to continue our collaboration with Two Rivers Performing Arts School in our Summer Theater Camp. This is a unique opportunity for fledgling actors and singers to perform onstage as part of a production designed specifically for young performers. All roles will be filled by youth through audition, including leading roles. The camp culminates in two public performances onstage on August 4th in The Arts Center’s Gallery. Led by Mark Reeves and his staff, Mark brings 30 years of experience in producing student musicals, and music education, to our Camp. We invite children of all ability levels to audition; there is a place for everyone in our production! Our camps are available to all youths of our community; costs are kept low to encourage attendance, and scholarships are available for those who otherwise would not be able to attend due to financial constraints. Class size is limited for all of our visual arts sessions for a smaller instructor to student ratio, allowing more individual attention for all attendees. We strongly encourage early registration to avoid disappointment. The arts are integral to the education of well-rounded youth. We are proud to offer these programs to help our young people mature and develop and to build a stronger community for us all. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

exhibitions revolving gallery exhibitions every four to six weeks Regalia: Recent Work by Linda Whitney May 24 – June 23, 2018 Much of Whitney’s recent work is inspired by diverse art forms found within pow wow dancing. The making of an pow wow outfit is a labor of love, often taking many days or months to create. The regalia itself contains many embedded values and meanings. The headdress, with its many feathers, shows that the wearer is an accomplished person. They are sometimes gifted to people of great leadership, embodying empathy for fellow tribal members. The wearer literally feels the weight of their community. Dancing is also a great responsibility. Eagle feathers are worn by both male and female dancers, given to individuals to commemorate significant life accomplishments. Pow wow outfits, especially those that are beaded or quilled, take tremendous effort and skill to create. Whitney, like the pow wow dress makers, has an intense work ethic and mastery of her art. She uses the impossibly slow, tedious, and physical mezzotint process, to create a stunning and impressive body of work. Her skill in mezzotint has earned Whitney frequent awards and inclusion in prestigious international exhibitions. Whitney had a 20+ year teaching position at Valley City State University, retiring several years ago to focus entirely on her work.

Meet the Artist Luncheon Enjoy lunch with artist Linda Whitney. Hear about her work and the current exhibit. Wednesday, June 6 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm A homemade lunch will be provided for $5 or bring your own. Please RSVP by June 5 to 701-251-2496. The body of work included in Regalia pays homage and respect to the vibrant, complex, alive and contemporary Native people. Over the years, The Arts Center has shown Whitney’s work many times and each time it surpasses that which proceeded it. Her work is always complex, having extraordinary detail, meant to be enjoyed and savored. Interestingly, while a pow wow is about movement, and activity, these prints are quiet and encourage contemplation especially for the accomplishment of an extraordinary artist.

DAKOTALAND: Photographs by Char-Marie Flood June 28 – August 4, 2018 Meet the Artist Luncheon Enjoy lunch with artist Char-Marie Flood. Hear about her work and the current exhibit. Monday, July 9 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm A homemade lunch will be provided for $5 or bring your own. Please RSVP by June 5 to 701-251-2496 “Dakotaland” is a series of twenty-three fine art photographs by Char-Marie Flood that capture the innate beauty of North Dakota’s landscapes. The works focus on how we can see the history of North Dakota in the land, from the pre-history captured in the rock formations of the Badlands to the spirit and courage of the first pioneers, as witnessed in the remnants of early homesteads. North Dakota’s wide expanses of stark, desolate landscape may be an acquired taste. Those not raised here don’t always appreciate the subtlety of North Dakota’s natural beauty. Photographer Char-Marie Flood not only appreciates the natural splendor of her adopted state, but also understands that its landscapes and its history are intricately entwined. In this series of photographs taken over several years, Flood adeptly captures the vast and horizontal quiet of the northern prairie. The lure of the distance and the pure vastness of being able to see to the ‘edge’ seem to hold a special intrigue for the artist. She photographed moments of beauty from throughout the state—extravagantly blue skies with big white clouds, the periwinkle of flax flowers, hoar frost on the prairie, the contours of a newly planted field. Each photograph in Dakotaland provides viewers with the opportunity to find the beauty in North Dakota’s varied landscapes. And if one looks closely, if one is open to truly seeing, the history of the land will reveal itself.

I AM THE ARTIST! “A dozen clay pinch pots line my kitchen sink all made by my daughter Emilie this year in the Arts After School program. She told me, Not only do I get to go to art class—which I love—but you and Dad get great art for our house. Thanks to the Arts After School Program, Emilie views herself as an artist. The program has also taught Emilie how to problem solve with her peers, it has given her a safe, happy place to socialize, and best of all it has encouraged her to tackle projects with a can-do spirit. A creative life is rich and full. That’s exactly how I would describe Em’s year at The Art Center.” ~ Lisa Lang (Emilie’s mom) Emilie would like to stress that even though she shares her artworks with her family, the art is hers and not her parents. “I am the artist, and love creating pieces from my imagination. My favorite class was learning paper marbling. I like hands-on projects the best.” ~ Emilie Lang Over the years, The Arts Center staff and artists have enjoyed working with the Lang family’s children. Such great creative and passionate students: Isaiah, Abraham, Hannah, Elia and most recently Emilie represent a perfect example of what keeps us going, and why we continue to work toward the enrichment of our community through the arts. New creative opportunities for children and adults are highlighted in this issue. We hope you will find the time to be inspired and explore your creative side!
