From the director’s desk: Have you ever heard of the novel The Mysteries of Paris?

Lawrence Kopp Executive Director

Unless you are a scholar of 19th Century French literature, you probably haven’t. Author Eugène Sue’s novel was first serialized over 90 installments in the leading Parisian newspaper of the day, the Journal des débats, in 1842 – 43, and was wildly successful. In the days before radio, television or the internet, it was a cultural phenomenon; the novel, and its cliffhanger plot, were the main topics of discussion among Parisians as they anxiously awaited the next weekly segment of Sue’s melodramatic story. The Mysteries of Paris spawned numerous imitators, including classics The Count of Monte Cristo and Les Misérables. Time, however, has not been kind to Sue’s work, as it is all but forgotten today. Having just finished reading all 1,300 pages of The Mysteries of Paris, I can say that this is a most unjust fate for a wonderful and engaging work. Sue brings all strata of 1830’s Parisian society to life, from the criminal underworld to the aristocracy, and has an unerring gift for storytelling, characterization and social commentary. Experiencing The Mysteries of Paris made me contemplate the many unjustly unknown artistic gems that are hiding in plain view, just waiting to be discovered. All it takes is a little curiosity and making the effort to search beyond the established and commonplace. How many minor masterpieces are awaiting your discovery? We at The Arts Center, through our exhibitions, programs and activities, try to bring to our community art in all of its manifestations, including, hopefully, some undiscovered, unknown gems. I invite you to join us at The Arts Center as we explore the world of art… hopefully we can help you to discover new artistic worlds and masterpieces, including some works that very well could change your life!

Arts After School

Celebrating Two Decades of Creativity, Innovation and Excellence By any reckoning, twenty years is a long time. So we at The Arts Center are proud that during the upcoming 2018-19 school year our popular Arts After School program will reach its twentieth year of providing innovative, arts based youth development activities for elementary aged children in our community. You may ask, what exactly is Arts After School and what makes it so popular with children and parents alike that it has reached this important milestone? Our story begins in 1999. That was the year that a community survey found that the arts were considered one of the most valuable assets for youth development, but paradoxically were the assets least available in our community. At the same time, a social worker found many “at risk” youth home alone after school, in need of a positive, supportive after school setting. The confluence of these two events saw the birth of our Arts After School. The past two decades have seen Arts After School grow—the 2017-18 school year saw the highest student enrollment ever—and a program that has become established, both in form and content. Arts After School runs every day of the school year, based on the Jamestown School District calendar. Enrollees in the program have transportation provided to The Arts Center from all Jamestown schools at the end of the school day, and home at 5:00 pm at the end of every session. After a nutritious snack (provided as part of tuition), participants get down to working on arts-based, hands-on projects that promote creativity and teach the basics of art in an enjoyable format. Every session is based on a new artistic genre; sessions run the gamut from drawing, painting and working with clay to poetry, mosaics, leatherwork and much more! We pride ourselves on developing the most unique, interesting and challenging sessions possible to engage and inspire participants. Just as important as the projects tackled are the care and concern we feel for every student. Through the course of the school year we come to know all of our students, work to develop each and every one of their talents to the utmost, and become our own little Arts After School “family.” We pride ourselves on providing Arts After School at a low cost—only $8 a day—that all families can afford. And if for some reason even this is not financially feasible for families, scholarships are available. No one is turned away from Arts After School, it truly is available to all children with a sincere desire to attend! Twenty years old and going strong, thriving and growing… over the years Arts After School has touched the lives of literally thousands of our community’s youth and offers a unique opportunity available nowhere else in the state of North Dakota. We are justifiably proud of Arts after School and invite parents and grandparents to explore this option for their children and grandchildren, and for everyone to consider making a donation in support of this invaluable and irreplaceable program. behind the scenes reaching rural schools Art Experiences for All Children

Reflecting on the past school year... The Arts Center’s classrooms were a bustle with elementary students from Montpelier Public School. Our Education Coordinator and local artist, Myra Olson, guided one group of students through creating a wet felting portrait. Myra brought in her hand-spun and dyed wools harvested from her family’s own sheeps and alpacas for the students to explore. The students had a fantastic time tearing into the wool, choosing colors and wet felting the work into a new solid piece of fabric. Several of the students thought the process was “magical.” Meanwhile, in our Hansen Arts Studio, local artist Bill Nybo was working with a second group of students. He guided them through several painting and drawing techniques that they could continue to practice and improve on independently. Imaginations ran wild! “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Our school does not have a dedicated art teacher or art classes beyond a craft project an individual teacher may put together. So, having a professional artist work with the students is a blessing. The children love it and talked about the experience for days and days! We look forward to working with The Arts Center more in the future,” said Kindergarten teacher Maureen Schrader of Montpelier Schools.

During the 2017 – 18 school year, students from Pingree, Medina and Lamoure Elementary schools also visitied and explored the arts here at The Arts Center. The Arts Center is thrilled to be able to enrich the Jamestown area through the arts and firmly believe the arts should be available to all—no matter how far out of town one may live. These opportunities with the rural school districts are just one of the reasons we are so passionate about our work. We look forward to the school year ahead.

exhibitions revolving gallery exhibitions every four to six weeks Energy and flow by Hooshang Khorsani August 9 – September 15, 2018 Hooshang Khorsani is an internationally exhibited artist with working studios in Ruston, LA, and Orange County, CA. His work reflects a bold contemporary style, with hues alternating between muted and highly energized. The paintings are rendered in acrylic and mixed media, and range from brushwork to washes to work with a palette knife. He paints on canvas, paper and board. Two of Hooshang’s favorite subjects are part of the exhibition; Flowers and Horses. Flowers arranged in the artist’s studio offer him inspiration. His paintings capture how these richly colored blooms both complement and set off one another. He then uses background blocks of color to add perspective. The artist tries to find the energy and inner life within his subjects without fully revealing them, seeking to unveil the mysteries and beauties of the universe. His equine paintings are part of a study of running horses. All areas of these paintings are designed to make the horses gallop ahead, trying to escape from the canvas. Every single color shows moving energy; each color cooperates with the next to handle this performance of power. He says this about his work: “I paint in layers, adding texture, but it’s as if the paint itself takes part in the creative process. I’m the tour guide on the journey, but there’s another participant: My hands are virtually channeled into a universal source of energy. And that energy, in turn, pulses through my brushes and artist tools.”

Exhibit Lunch – August 22, noon Inspired by Hooshang’s floral paintings there will be lunch program featuring the art of flower arranging. Gardener extraordinaire, John Zvirovski will be demonstrating. Purchase Lunch for $5 (or bring your own). Call 701-251-2496 to RSVP by August 20 if you would like lunch. His paintings are displayed in private collections in Europe and across the United States as well as in several corporate collections. They are also part of permanent museum collections. This exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

Sweeney Todd

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Surfaces in Jamestown Three dinner theater shows: Oct 18, 19 and 20 at 6:00 pm On October 18, 19, and 20, our 2nd Act Players are bringing to the stage Canadian playwright Raymond Hull’s macabre tale of Victorian era murder and mayhem in London, Sweeney Todd, as part of a double bill that also includes the play Conflict by Wade Bradford. The murderous barber of Fleet Street has been a part of popular culture since the 19th Century, and has its roots in the melodramatic literature and urban legends of the period. The first appearance of the character Sweeney Todd was in the The String of Pearls: A Romance. Written by an unknown author, it was published in London, appearing serialized in 18 weekly parts in 1846-47 in The People’s Periodical and Family Library. It first appeared on the stage in 1847 and various versions of the tale were a staple of British theater throughout the 19th Century. While there is no historical evidence in 19th Century London of a murderous barber with an accomplice making “meat pies” from the victims, Sweeney Todd was based upon an urban legend popular at the time. In fact, Charles Dickens himself mentions in a novel, “…preparers of cannibalistic pastry… doing lively business in the metropolis.” Fact or fiction, the tale of Sweeney Todd has struck a nerve in audiences for the past 170 years, both fascinating and entertaining them in equal measure. The 2nd Act players are stretching themselves artistically tackling a double bill of comedies that address the absurd and the macabre in equal measure. An evening of entertainment you won’t want to miss. Tickets in advance only. Available at The Arts Center. For more information and tickets visit: www.jamestownarts.com
