Mindi Schmitz Executive Director
Summer 2019 is almost in the books, but don’t forget, we have a great line up for the Downtown Arts Market every Thursday in August! Speaking of the Downtown Arts Market, what a success! So far the weather has cooperated and the performances have been fantastic. I need to thank all of the sponsors, they are listed on page 7. Please thank them. It is because of their generosity we are able to bring this great event to Jamestown. I also want to thank all of the volunteers that help us with set up and take down, Jamestown Young Professionals and Jamestown Chamber of Commerce and Staff of University of Jamestown. We are gearing up for our fall activities, Arts After School, Adult Classes, and Performances, please check our website for upcoming events and give us a call and let us know what you’re looking for at The Arts Center. This fall we will be doing a membership drive; our membership database has been a little lacking, so please have patience while we work through the issues. In the meantime, we may ask you to renew your membership. Our Oktoberfest committee is well in its planning stages. Remember to mark your calendar for Saturday, September 14 from 5:30 – 8:30 in the Hansen Art Park. We will have great entertainment, food and (of course) beverages.
Sincerely,
The Arts Center is partnering with the Great Plains Food bank to offer students a summer meal program at the Hansen Arts Park through August 30th. We are providing space to store the meals and a location for distribution. Our friends at North Dakota Farmers Union, Unison Bank, The Jamestown Sun and First Community Credit Union have volunteered to help distribute the meals Monday – Thursday at 12:00 pm.

55th Annual JFAA Art show August 8 – September 21, 2019
It’s hard to believe that its already time for the JFAA Annual Arts Show. Due to scheduling conflicts it was necessary to adjust the show to be a bit earlier this year. You may recall, this long-running exhibit used to be a spring show. It was moved to the fall to give school children more opportunities to visit the gallery. With so much variety on display, the students can see a broad range of art forms all in one place and the exhibition offers what we call a “teaching moment”. We encourage teachers arrange a tour, we welcome student visits, not only this exhibition, but anytime throughout the year. Every time children come, not only do they learn something new, but their unbiased and fresh perspectives often reveal observations we might not have considered. It’s always difficult to write about this exhibition prior to seeing the artwork. Generally all we Cover: Niso Hummingbird Dancer, Linda Whitney, mezzotint have at this moment is the basic identification information; title, date, size, medium and artist name. We don’t actually see the art until its unpacked just prior to installation. But we can glean some observations from the entry forms. This year you can expect to see some large sculptural mixed media artwork. Overall the number of entries are down but the scale of the work is larger so the gallery will be full as usual. Once again, photography and mixed media appear to be the largest categories. The opening reception will be in association with the Downtown Arts Market on Thursday, August 8. The year’s Juror, Paul Noot will comment his selections for the awards at 6:15 pm.
Home in maine: A painter’s perspective
Paintings by Melisssa Post van der Burg September 26 – November 2, 2019
“Home in Maine: A Painter’s Perspective” explores a painter’s view of ordinary life. Melissa Post van der Burg finds compelling models in her circle of family, friends, and neighbors, often placing them in the Maine landscape, in the tradition of such venerable artists as Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer. In one review of Melissa’s work, a critic wrote, “Post van der Burg has that rare gift of elevating an ordinary, daily occurrence into an image of tender iconicity.” A self-taught painter, Melissa continues to live and work in Maine, often spending the month of May painting on Monhegan Island, 13 miles off the mainland. Although Monhegan is primarily a tourist destination during the busy summer months of July and August, and is accessible only by ferry, May tends to be a quiet and reflective time—still cold and stormy-- and more the old way of life for a Maine fishing village-- not too many people around—a perfect opportunity for an artist to really dig in and paint the world around her.
Cover: Her Boat, oil on canvas, 24” x 30” Above: Thanksgiving Visitor, oil on canvas, 48” x 36”
Melissa will be in-residence while her work is exhibited and will be teaching two classes, one focused on introductory drawing and one on watercolor painting. These classes are a wonderful opportunity to learn from a master painter. Please see full description in class section. Additionally Melissa will be working on some paintings while in the area during her 5 weeks—landscapes, the downtown, and perhaps getting some people to pose for portrait work.

Arts After School
Celebrating Two+ Decades of Creativity, Innovation and Excellence By any reckoning, twenty years is a long time. So we at The Arts Center are proud that during the upcoming 2018-19 school year our popular Arts After School program will reach its twenty first year of providing innovative, arts based youth development activities for elementary aged children in our community. You may ask, what exactly is Arts After School and what makes it so popular with children and parents alike that it has reached this important milestone? Our story begins in 1999. That was the year that a community survey found that the arts were considered one of the most valuable assets for youth development, but paradoxically were the assets least available in our community. At the same time, a social worker found many “at risk” youth home alone after school, in need of a positive, supportive after school setting. The confluence of these two events saw the birth of our Arts After School. The past two decades have seen Arts After School grow—the 2017-18 school year saw the highest student enrollment ever—and a program that has become established, both in form and content. Arts After School runs every day of the school year, based on the Jamestown School District calendar. Enrollees in the program have transportation provided to The Arts Center from all Jamestown schools at the end of the school day, and home at 5:00 pm at the end of every session. After a nutritious snack (provided as part of tuition), participants get down to working on arts-based, hands-on projects that promote creativity and teach the basics of art in an enjoyable format. Every session is based on a new artistic genre; sessions run the gamut from drawing, painting and working with clay to poetry, mosaics, leatherwork and much more! We pride ourselves on developing the most unique, interesting and challenging sessions possible to engage and inspire participants. Just as important as the projects tackled are the care and concern we feel for every student. Through the course of the school year we come to know all of our students, work to develop each and every one of their talents to the utmost, and become our own little Arts After School “family.” We pride ourselves on providing Arts After School at a low cost—only $8 a day—that all families can afford. And if for some reason even this is not financially feasible for families, scholarships are available. No one is turned away from Arts After School, it truly is available to all children with a sincere desire to attend! Twenty-one years old and going strong, thriving and growing… over the years Arts After School has touched the lives of literally thousands of our community’s youth and offers a unique opportunity available nowhere else in the state of North Dakota. We are justifiably proud of Arts after School and invite parents and grandparents to explore this option for their children and grandchildren, and for everyone to consider making a donation in support of this invaluable and irreplaceable program.
