Late in life, the famous Russian author Leo Tolstoy wrote a book entitled What is Art, which delves deeply into the nature of art and examines its ultimate purpose and meaning. Having just arrived at The Arts Center, with a background exclusively in classical music, it seemed like a good time to pull Tolstoy’s work off of the shelf and ponder how The Arts Center can best serve the Jamestown community through art in its many manifestations. Tolstoy writes of the moral nature of art, of it being a force for good towards the advancement of mankind. Our guiding principal, succinctly stated as “culture builds community,” could have been taken verbatim from Tolstoy. Yet there is much more to art than community building. A quote attributed to the Impressionist painter Claude Monet states, “There is only one beauty: that of truth revealing itself.” Art brings indescribable beauty into our lives, revealing in a mysterious way the truth normally hidden from view. Upon much reflection, it seems The Arts Center can best serve Jamestown by striving to build a stronger community one individual at time, transforming lives through actively experiencing the beauty, and truth, of art. To that end, we are working on expanding the breadth and depth of our offerings, including courses in conjunction with the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD Broadcasts as well as classes that explore the arts and humanities of select epochs that shaped our modern world. Through an understanding of art, artists and the age in which they lived and created, we gain not only a deeper appreciation of art but of human nature and the changeless truths that are the very underpinning of our world and culture. Perhaps John Keats summed up it up best in the immortal closing line of his Ode on a Grecian Urn: “Beauty is truth, truth beauty—that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” I hope to see all of you at The Arts Center this autumn!

ARTS PARK UPDATE: Summer 2017 We hope you enjoyed the Downtown ArtSpark Festival celebrating the Hansen Arts Park and bringing new life to downtown Jamestown. As you may have seen, much of the work for the park is completed. We still have a few details to attend to as summer wraps up. The Hansen Arts park will continue to evolve and change as the days, months, and years go by. That is what a relevant, creative space should do. We are already planning programming for next summer, so if you have great ideas of what you would like to see happen in this space please feel free to share them with us. Whether your interest is performances on stage, or art installations on the lawn, we are open to all suggestions. The Arts Center wants to make sure that the programming in the Hansen Arts Park reaches the community as a whole, brings new life to the downtown, and most all, inspires. Call us at 701-251-2496, or email us at info@jamestownarts.com, with your suggestions. Once again, we would like to thank all of those that have helped with this project over the years. The Downtown ArtSpark Festival was not only a fun event for the community—it was also a celebration of much hard work, many hours graciously given by volunteers, and countless donations, all by those devoted to our hometown of Jamestown. This project is made possible in part by grants from ArtsMidwest, the Bush Foundation and ArtPlace America as well as local business, city, and individual donations.

Richard Martinson: Part of My World October 12 – November 4, 2017 The Arts Center Gallery. Admission is free and open to the public. Martinson is a self-taught artist who began dabbling in painting in 1986 while temporarily laid-off from work. His subjects come from a lifetime of experience, including time as a farmer and rancher, driving trucks from coast to coast and working in highway construction all across the West.. Now retired, as a snowbird he follows the seasons, traveling full-time in his studio equipped RV from North Dakota to Arizona. He enjoys painting the lay of the land from prairie to desert, points of interest and covering the past to the present. He says, “I’ve seen a lot and have been many places. I hope to share what I’ve seen with everyone. The way I see it, now that I’m in my seventies, I better get it done.” His work is reminiscent of folk art, simple and understated. He depicts the western and rural way of life, including the characters that go along with it. This exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
