Mindi Schmitz Executive Director
Happy New Year! We at The Arts Center are excited to welcome a new year, and more importantly, to say goodbye to 2020. As we look forward, The Arts Center has some exciting things to offer. As you will see in this issue of the newsletter, we have all things The Arts Center planned as usual with some new opportunities. Arts Midwest Worldfest is offering their programs virtually which means we can share exceptional international musicians and their culture with you over the next two months. The Arts After School students will take advantage of this opportunity with some cultural immersion into the arts of Japan. In a normal year, we would be knee-deep in planning for our primary fundraising event, our annual gala. For the safety of all, we have decided to take a different approach. The Gala Committee is hard at work coming up with creative ways to connect with our supporters safely while raising the funds that are so important to The Arts Center. We will not have an in-person Gala but will offer a unique opportunity to give to The Arts Center while supporting a local artist. We are working with our Resident Artist, Linda Roesch, to create one-of-a-kind, commissioned artworks based on the level of support. We are working out the details as this goes to print, but rest assured we will be contacting you to participate in this distinctive chance to support The Arts Center and our Artist in Residence. We are looking forward to a new year with many opportunities for The Arts Center and still believe that “Culture Builds Community.” As always please stop by The Arts Center and take a look at the exhibit or just to chat. We love visitors. Here’s to a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year! Sincerely,
THE ARTS CENTER GALA 2021 In this unprecedented year, The Arts Center is determined to serve our community as safely as possible. Through this challenging time, The Arts Center has continued to fulfill its mission, to enrich the Jamestown community through the arts and celebrate the creative spirit. We have found new ways to be inspired by exploring and using technology and ingenuity. Which is why, this year, our Annual Gala will not be held in person. This much anticipated event is our largest fundraiser, raising 1/3 of our operating revenue, so it is a momentous decision. Instead, we are asking for your continued support by contributing in one of three ways. There is an amazing thank you gift for each contribution from our Resident Artist Linda Roesch. AND you have the altruistic satisfaction of keeping your Arts Center going strong.
4 $1,200 and up - Commissioned work by Linda Roesch 4 $600 - Print straight from Linda’s Sketchbook 4 $100 - Photo calendar featuring what we do at The Arts Center All contributions will go to the same beloved programming you have supported before, like scholarships for Arts After School, funds for the Downtown Arts Market, outreach to groups like Triumph or Alpha, and bringing new and exciting artists into our community. ARTS AFTER SCHOOL
The Arts Center is proud that during the upcoming 2020-21 school year our popular Arts After School program will reach its twenty-second year of providing innovative, arts-based youth development activities for elementary aged children in our community. behind the scenes SPECIAL MOMENTS THAT STICK
Special moments happen here all the time… maybe you have experienced your own. Here is quick look at one from our Arts After School class. Our artist in residence, Linda Roesch, is teaching this Arts After class (acrylic painting). She is also teaching her art classes in the elementary schools. Linda works with Caroline, a third grader at Gussner, in both programs and has done so for the past three years. The two have developed a special bond. Caroline is particularly fascinated with Linda’s paintings. And she passionately comments on the techniques, colors and subject matter. “It’s like working with another artist in my studio. I appreciate her feedback,” said Linda. Linda shared, that for three days in a row Caroline came to class explaining to her how much she wanted to buy a certain painting. She wanted to give to her Mom as a birthday gift. Knowing that this painting was out of a third grader’s reach financially (even though Caroline did try to come up with the money). Linda shared a little artist wisdom… “Sometimes artists trade their works. You are working on a piece at Gussner that I really like. Lets trade”!, Linda said. That weekend, Caroline’s whole family came into the gallery to see the exhibit. Caroline’s mother purchased the originally desired piece as a Christmas gift for her little girl. “The connection that Linda and Caroline have is a testament to what we strive for at The Arts Center. Our relationship with the Public School, ND Council on the Arts and many others is what allows us opportunities like this. To link artist-mentors with the talented kids of Jamestown. Linda is so great with all the kids here, this is just one example.” ~Mindi Schmitz, Arts Center Executive Director

MACK SCHROER: Pop Cars
January 28 – March 6, 2021
Are you a movie lover? Superhero fan? Lover of comics? Perhaps a little satire? Then rejoice, this exhibit will engage you, make you smile and take you on a walk down memory lane. For the artist, it started as a scribble of Homer Simpson on a daily-log sheet at a salt-waterdisposal during a February snow flurry in northwest North Dakota as an oil-field trucker. The computer-log was down and he resorted to a hand-kept ledger on Keller’s Daily Logs. The lines soon called for a portrait of Homer and the seed of Pop Cars was planted. The idea evolved - pop culture figures who get down behind the wheel. A Mack Titan stolen from the depths of Hell...Michigan, a timetraveling Delorean, a San-Fran hill-hoping Ford Mustang 390 epitomizing counter-culture cool, or the Renaissance Man’s ornithopter gliding along the current of Fibonacci’s spiral - these characters are defined by their vehicle of choice. “If I had a time machine traveling back nearly three years to me sketching “Back to the Future’s” Doc Brown on a commercial driver’s log-sheet at an oil-field truck yard after a day-shift, and I told myself this sketch would turn into a series of illustrations touring six North Dakota galleries including three colleges, to quote Marty McFly, I’d have told myself to “Get outta town.” Biography: Mack currently is an independent artist working in illustration, oil painting, 2D animation, storyboarding, set design, window painting, creative writing and acting at Macklin Art. Mack found his calling on a ranch in Berryton, Kansas through comic books. His love for visual narrative evolved in illustration, 2D animation and graphic design and a BFA in Studio Art and Digital Design from Washburn University in Kansas, MO. Mack has worked in graphic design, writing and storyboarding and was awarded over twenty design and web awards by the Kansas Press Assoc. for his work at the Osage County Herald-Chronicle newspaper including Advertisement Designer of the Year 2015. MIDWEST WORLD FEST “Lunch Listen”
Tuesdays: January 12, January 19 and February 2 at 12:00 pm • Free Admission Since 2003, Arts Midwest World Fest has brought international musicians to communities throughout the Midwest. You may remember when The Arts Center hosted four world-renowned performance groups. Many of us have fond memories of the experience and impact these “visitors” had on our community. This year, the artists cannot perform in person but Arts Midwest is offering the programs virtually, on-line, available to everyone to enjoy, not just the “host communities.” There are study guides, discussion questions, and videos that accompany each performance group, and of course, concert videos. This year showcases three international groups. You can watch on-line (https://www.artsmidwest.org/worldfestonline) or come to The Arts Center and watch with us on the following dates, bring your own lunch and enjoy a socially distanced but culturally rich experience. HADAR MAOZ (Israel) - Tuesday, January 12 at 12:00 pm Traverse 2,500 years of musical tradition from the heart of Central Asia with Hadar Maoz and her ensemble. Making use of traditional instruments like the tar and saz, Hadar’s electrifying Bukharin sound finds inspiration everywhere, from ancient Persia to modern Israel, while discovering common ground with blues and rock along the way. PAULO PADILHA E BANDO (Brazil) - Tuesday, January 19 at 12:00 pm Catch the samba swing of Brazil with Paulo Padilha e Bando. Born in São Paulo, Padilha travels between the sounds of traditional samba and other Brazilian popular musical styles. A music teacher of more than 25 years of experience, Padilha is a master musician and educator that specializes in rhythm and song workshops for children, teenagers, and adults. His clever lyrics have a special focus on the telling about the urban lifestyle in Brazil in a very sharp and good-humored way. With a band of master samba musicians and dancers, you’ll want to dance your way home! Hikaru (Japan) - Tuesday, February 2, at 12:00 pm Explore Japanese folk music through Hikaru’s magical melodies and rhythms. A group of well-trained musicians from different prefectures of Japan, each member of Hikaru is well versed in the deep traditions of their instruments and styles: the distinctive 3-string Tsugaru shamisen, powerful taiko drums, the traditional shinoboe flute, and Akita folk music. These traditional sounds and styles combine in a stunning performance that will carry you to the soaring mountains and rugged seas of Japan. This project was made possible with support from the Howard B. and Ruth F. Brin Jewish Arts Endowment, a fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation’s Community Foundation. This activity is also made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Arts Midwest is also generously supported by Illinois Arts Council Agency, Indiana Arts Commission, Iowa Arts Council, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Minnesota State Arts Board, North Dakota Council on the Arts, Ohio Arts Council, South Dakota Arts Council and Wisconsin Arts Board.
The pandemic has given us the opportunity to creatively change some of our signature Arts Center programs to safely enjoy all that culture and the arts have to offer. Over the next five months, in association with the opening of each new exhibition we will be offering an “exclusive” wine and cheese tasting for up to 25 participants aptly named Perfectly Paired, because what’s better than curated wine and cheese parings coupled with art. Sommelier Karla Sandness will be choosing each exhibition’s pairings which may be inspired by the art or other common theme. To be sure, the wine and cheeses will delight your palate. This program is first-come-first-served. To sign up for participation give the office a call at 701-251-2496.
