From the director’s desk:
As the New Year begins, there are resolutions we plan to follow and others we have made with the best intentions. I plan to do the usual – more time at the gym, more time not working, drink more water or wine, clean the closets, write letters, abandon resolutions.
Taylor Barnes Executive Director
If I were the Arts Center making resolutions, they might be: meet new visitors in the gallery, see new faces in adult class, utilize more volunteers, celebrate more talent on the stage, keep my utility bills low, and keep all systems functioning so there are no unexpected large repair bills… fortunate for this 2013 resolution that the water heater died in December 2012. Like all resolutions, these are full of hope and determination. One Arts Center resolution that will be kept into the New Year is to continue bringing quality artistic experiences to this region. Arts After School, in its thirteenth year, is expanding into the middle school with sessions every Tuesday & Thursday AND January is overflowing with activities! Whether your interest is creative writing (Writer’s Circle), woodcarving (every Thursday), film (classic movie nights), theatre (2nd ACT dinner theatre), photography (Sundays), music (McIntyre performance), creative fun (Artful Happy Hour) or learning about wines of the world – you don’t want to miss beginning the New Year at the Arts Center.

Nigeria – Money raised by the North Dakota Reading Association paid for the chairs that these students are sitting upon. The chairs are important because the plastic legs are difficult for the fire ants to climb. These students appear to be much like early learners in any setting until you look closer and see the extended bellies from a malnutrition disease called Kwashiorkor. School appearance is important. It is noteworthy that each mother is at the water’s edge washing those uniforms nightly.
Literacy without borders by Pam Rettig January 17 - February 23, 2013 Deep winter takes gallery visitors to Nigeria and Tanzania. Through the collected photographs and stories of Bismarck teacher, professor and researcher Pam Rettig, we get a glimpse into the daily life of African students. Rettig, who was born and raised in western North Dakota, has dedicated her life to education and literacy. Literacy Without Borders documents Rettig’s work in Africa and has particular relevance to Jamestown. The project was funded in-part by the North Dakota Reading Association (NDRA) and the local chapter, The Prairie Reading Council whose fund raising efforts were instrumental in establishing the first traveling library in Nigeria. The book mobile was purchased and books are now able to reach children in rural villages and towns. The Arts Center hosts this documentary exhibition to celebrate February’s Black History month and emphasize the importance of literacy to the “arts” of writing and communication. The Arts Center is partnering with the Prairie Reading Council to build awareness for the upcoming NDRA annual conference. This year’s theme is “Literacy is Legendary” and will feature four nationally recognized authors. Everyone is welcome to attend the conference, registration information will be available in the gallery. Proceeds generated from participation help to fund projects like the Nigerian Book Mobile as do any sales of Pam Rettig’s photographs. Learn more at: www.jamestownarts.com/current-exhibits
Literacy refers to the ability to read for knowledge, write coherently, and think critically about the written word.
