Change seems to be one of life’s motivating factors – fear of; acquiescence to; something to embrace or to avoid. My favorite quote (actually written on a mug I have) is by Mahatma Gandhi: ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world.’ We do this every day at the Arts Center by creating opportunities for individuals (and the community) to challenge themselves; to grow; and to change. Whether that change is seen in short-term with increased awareness of others, acquisition of knowledge, and increased skills; or long-term with improvement in attitude, comfort in social interactions or shift in economic perspective for the community. This week, I was eavesdropping on the Arts After School kids while they were learning printmaking skills… where planning is essential; positive will can become negative; and frustration can run high. Yet in an atmosphere where risk-taking is encouraged, safe and supported, all that frustration becomes triumph. These transformative experiences occur because the Arts Center is effective. There has been a push to advance student learning through STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). Most recently that acronym has been changed to STEAM adding art to the mix. It is evident that without creativity and the ability to solve problems, the other components of STEM fall flat. The good news for Jamestown is the Arts Center, Jamestown Public Schools and the North Dakota Council on the Arts have an effective and active STEAM team developing lessons to maximize student learning. So I challenge you to “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”... or support those that are.

creative spirits Mixed Media Works by Lydia Richez-Bowman & Tammy Jones January 9 – March 1, 2014 Imagination, exploration and innovation characterize the exhibit for January/ February. The two artists, Lydia Richez-Bowman and Tammy Jones, share a passion for art and willingness to explore non-traditional methods. Each thrives on experimentation and they aren’t satisfied to do just one kind of art but explore a variety of mediums. They both describe their art as spiritual endeavor. The works of each artist could stand alone but combined they will speak to and give strength to one another. About the Artists Lydia Richez-Bowman was born in Nice, France and came to America as a young girl, her French heritage is a strong influence on her creativity. She moved to Bismarck from San Diego, CA but her art is still influenced by the light, energy and culture of southern California as well as North Dakota seasons. Lydia has developed and evolved her own unique style with a strong emphasis on design and design elements. She is an abstract artist able to create a powerful vision as well as personal spiritual experiences in her multi-level works and strong use of color. The inclusion of metal and metallic materials is a direct reference to her past as a jewelry designer and manufacturer of original works in silver, copper and cloisonne enameling.

gallery talk Tammy Jones received her undergraduate and graduate degrees at MSUM, Mankato. Her Master of Fine Arts focus is ceramics and sculpture. As a high school art teacher, she taught printmaking, drawing, painting, ceramics, mixed media, graphic design, computer-applied art, black & white photography and fiber art. In addition to being an art instructor, Tammy had two studios – one ceramic and one painting – which served as her creative and class spaces. In the past several years Tammy has taught numerous adult and children’s classes as an Arts Center resident artist. Tammy Jones, Blue’s Labrador, 2013, water media, 28” x 22”

Tammy’s current work continues to be about the relationship of chaos and stillness; how and what we use to fill up the crevice or canyon that lies between the two extremes. She explains, “Chaos presents itself in this body of work as the variety of materials used to create the paintings, ceramic tiles and sculptures. Stillness can be found by how the material was used. The balance between chaos and stillness provides us with unity and a spiritual journey within.”
