From the director’s desk:
Cyndi Wish Executive Director
Writing this from my third week as Director here at The Arts Center, I don’t know what I can tell you about this wonderful organization that you don’t already know. Every day something exciting is happening—home-schooled kids come for art class, clients from Community Options learn about ceramics, the Woodchippers Group meets in the Hansen Studio, Artful Happy Hour, Classic Movie Night, Arts After School, adult classes, Rumble-in-the-Jungle, high-quality exhibitions, community theatre… And The Duhks? Playing in Jamestown? Here? Really? I am constantly blown away by the capacity The Arts Center has, the breadth of the programs here, and the organization’s commitment to the community—But you know all of this already, right? People have asked me about my “vision” for The Arts Center. While I am not without vision, The Arts Center is an organization that is here to provide Jamestown and the surrounding area with creativity, culture, and education. The vision it achieves is one that comes from you, the people The Arts Center serves. I invite you to stop by, say hello, and share with me your opinions on what The Arts Center can do to continue to keep the community culturally engaged. For me, art has always been the thing that comes along when life feels blurry or dark and makes it beautiful again. My vision is that the arts can do that for you too. Many have also asked me about making such a change, moving to North Dakota from Cape Cod. I love it here, and my only regret about moving to Jamestown is not doing it in time to make it to Taylor’s retirement send-off. Which sounds, deservedly, like it was a really great party. Hope to see you soon, Cyndi

The
DUHKS “The inventive Canadians in The Duhks are widely beloved for their smooth blend of traditional roots music, bluegrass and soul which they inject with well-placed Afro-Cuban and Celtic influences. ~ NPR One of the most musically adventurous bands to come from the roots scene in the past decade. No band epitomizes the polyethnic strands of modern folk music better than The Duhks. Since forming in Winnipeg in 2001, The Duhks have created a dynamic blend of old-timey, French Canadian and Celtic music punched up with shades of blues, soul and driving Afro-Cuban rhythms that leaves festival crowds on their feet. Over the course of 4 critically-acclaimed albums the band has earned Juno and Grammy awards and nominations and have played a significant role in the neo-folk revival. Souls of silver Wet Plate Photographs by Shane Balkowitsch January 14 – 31, 2015 Seeing an unusual photograph launched Shane Balkowitsch’s journey into historic photographic processes—particularly wet plate collodion. One of the earliest forms of photography, Frederick Scott Archer has been credited with inventing this process in 1848. It became popular worldwide, then quickly died off in the 1880s when a more convenient way of taking photographs was invented. In recent years, the art form has experienced a small revival among contemporary photographers who have decided to return to the roots of photography and embrace the old. Making a wet plate can be difficult, timely, From the cover: costly, unpredictable, and requires a high Jeff Carlson, 12/20/2013 degree of commitment. The images can wet plate glass plate, 5 x 7” be captured on glass (ambrotype) or on metal (tin type). A wet plate photographer makes a film base on a piece of glass or metal using collodion, submerges it in a silver nitrate solution to make it light sensitive, and then exposes the photograph usually in an old style wood bellows camera box and antique brass lens from the 1800s. The process is called wet plate because during the entire process the chemicals on the plates must remain wet and cannot be allowed to dry. The end result is a one-of-a-kind, archival object of art that will last many lifetimes. “Digital photography relies on technology. Wet plate photography relies on 160-year-old chemistry, a bit of magic, and some luck. I think it is very important that as technology moves forward, we embrace and continue to celebrate and not forget important processes from the past. Wet plate photography is one of those processes. Every time I show someone the wet plate process, they are absolutely amazed regarding the ability to get a photograph using some chemicals and pieces of hand-cut glass.” ~Shane Balkowitsch
Wet Plate Demonstration with Shane Balkowitsch January 31, 2015 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm Free. Open to all. At The Arts Center. Balkowitsch will demonstrate the magic that makes these striking images in a demonstration/workshop. Free and open to the public he will randomly draw 5-6 individuals to have their portrait taken during the event. Selected “sitters” will receive their image once it is developed. So enthralled by this process, in 2012 Balkowitsch founded Nostalgic Glass Wet Plate Studio in Bismarck, ND. To date, he has created over 734 portrait plates of family, friends and complete strangers. His goal is to keep the art form alive while documenting and photographing people from all walks of life–Souls of Silver. His process, ambrotype that translates in Ancient Greek as “Immortal Impression”– a fitting appellation for these intense, sometimes haunting images.

gallery talk Member Artists: A reminder to our member artists. Most months there is an opportunity for Member Artists to exhibit in our Lobby Gallery. If you are interested you must have at least 10 pieces to show (this number is dependent on size, if artwork is large less pieces are needed to fill the space). To be displayed they need to be framed and ready to hang. The Lobby display is a wonderful way for artists to exhibit when they don’t have many exhibit-ready pieces yet would like to show their work. If interested please contact Sally Jeppson, Gallery Manager at sjeppson@jamestownarts.com.

a look inside dragons are too seldom In support of their efforts to promote arts-integrated learning experiences, The Arts Center applied for and was awarded a $2,352 Artist-in-Residence grant by the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA). The Arts Center was among 15 recipients of the most recent Artist-in-Residence grants awarded by the NDCA. This grant program is designed to give students and teachers an understanding of quality art and an appreciation for cultural traditions through hands-on workshops and experiences. We are using this grant to help bring Markie Scholz to Jamestown, a nationally recognized puppeteer who has been performing across the country for over 30 years. She is a one person troupe with a cast of thousands, a globe-trotting troubadour and an electrifying entertainer. She is the cofounder of Dragons Are Too Seldom Puppet Productions. Markie’s current show In The Center Of Things focuses on bullying prevention. “Puppets provide a fun and creative medium for children to exercise their oral speaking skills, retell stories, and demonstrate understanding of a central message - crucial skills for developing literacy. Through humor and wit, puppets delight and educate young and old. ~ Miranda Letherman, Arts Center Education Coordinator Not only an entertainer, Markie is also an educator. Packed in with her years of front-line puppeteering experience, she also has a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. This unparalleled combination allows her to deliver unforgettable insight and enjoyment to children of all ages. Markie will be working with 1st grade students in all Jamestown schools for an entire week. With an intensive core group class at Lincoln school. Markie will also be giving a public performance January, 29th at 5:30 pm here at The Arts Center.
