Upcoming Classes A Look Inside New Exhibit: Americas 2000 Upcoming Events The Trouble with Cats Special Thanks

From the director’s desk: After a long, nation-wide search and countless interviews, we have finally done it! The Arts Center is happy to announce that we have found the perfect person to be our new Executive Director. Please help us welcome Cyndi Wish of Provincetown, MA to our community. Cyndi is excited to be joining the team at The Arts Center, to keep in motion all the great programs that Taylor has built, and to see what she, the staff, and the Board, can come up with to continue to find exciting ways to serve the creative community in Jamestown and the region. Happily leaving the dunes of coastal New England for the plains of North Dakota, Cyndi brings over 10 years of experience as a teacher, student, and administrator of arts programs, as well as a significant professional history in non-profit management, fundraising, and leadership. “I have an advanced degree in visual arts, a love of Excel spreadsheets, budgets, and accounting, and an uncanny ability to enjoy working with a wide variety of creative personalities. This combination has led to my ten-year career in management and leadership of creative non-profit organizations.” ~Cyndi Wish Cyndi will be moved and taking the reins by December 1, 2014. Stop in, introduce yourself and get to know our new Director.

a look inside Work that you may not see… it’s happening and it’s powerful! When you think of The Arts Center you may think of a great musical performance you attended, a dinner theater production you enjoyed, a time you stretched your skills at an art class, or maybe a good time you had at one of our cultural festivals. There is a lot going on here but, you may be surprised at just how much. Many of our programs are not big events that you see in the paper or hear about from friends. When we are not working on the next performance, play production or festival we are working to provide quality creative experiences to the elementary schools, the homeschool groups, the resident’s at Ave Maria Village & The Heritage Centre, and those who may not otherwise have access to these experiences. One of these programs pairs local ceramic and visual artist, Bill Nybo, with student groups from Community Options and The Anne Carlsen Center. These weekly and monthly hands-on creative experiences are more like art therapy than art class… using art and the creative process to help foster self-expression, enhance coping skills, encourage social interaction, manage stress, and boost one’s sense of self. The high enthusiasm levels and big smiles are enough to prove the program’s success to anyone observing.

“We are so very excited about the opportunity of partnering with the Art Center for a third year. The past two years have opened up an experience that our clients have really enjoyed and we look forward to another year where individuals of all ability can come together with an artist to learn more. The Anne Carlsen motto is all about increasing independence for all and I think creating their own art pieces is a great way to not only foster independence but also creativity. Another great part of this collaboration is that we are getting out in the community which is very important for these young adults. They want to be a part of society as much as possible but they aren’t always given a chance because of the stigma with disabilities. This partnership is so valued by our clients, staff and families that we hope it continues for many years to come.” ~Brita Goss, Team Lead Community Based Services at The Anne Carlsen Center

It is work like this that keeps The Arts Center so busy every day. Work that you may not see… but, it’s happening and it’s powerful. A big thank you to our members! Membership dollars provide the general operations funding that allows us to do this kind of work.

americas 2000: Best of the Best December 4, 2014 – January 13, 2015 This thought-provoking exhibition features artists who have earned the distinction of Best of Show in the annual Americas 2000 All Media and Paperworks competitions over the past decade. Americas 2000 is a national juried competition that is hosted by the Northwest Art Center at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. The exhibition, touring through the North Dakota Art Gallery Association, includes thirty-three artworks by seventeen artists from sixteen states across the United States. The exhibit is rich in contrast and technique with artwork created using a variety of diverse mediums; sculpture, painting, cast paper, printmaking and photography. The imagery is rich and provocative, inviting contemplation and dialog. Touching on a variety of subjects, the artists explore sociopolitical concerns Angela Young, Sound, lithograph to ordinary life and the allegorical rendered in styles spanning a wide continuum from realistic and abstract to surrealistic and nonobjective. Each artist’s story will be shared—their unique biographies and artistic visions will help gallery visitors fully understand these complex, contemporary works. This exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

Like what you’ve read about the Best of the Best exhibition coming in December? Perhaps your art could be part of the next Americas show. Here are the details. http://www.minotstateu.edu/nac/pdf/pw_2015.pdf

Member Artists A reminder to our member artists. Most months there is an opportunity for Member Artists to exhibit in our Lobby Gallery. If you are interested you must have at least 10 pieces to show (this number is dependent on size, if artwork is large less pieces are needed to fill the space). To be displayed they need to be framed and ready to hang. The Lobby display is a wonderful way for artists to exhibit when they don’t have many exhibit-ready pieces yet would like to show their work. If interested please contact Sally Jeppson, Gallery Manager at sjeppson@jamestownarts.com.

Exhibit at Jamestown Regional Medical Center JRMC has a rotating artist gallery in the corridor connecting the hospital and clinic. The artwork is changed quarterly. The exhibition space is a 24 foot wall–depending on the size of the work, the average number of pieces needed to fill the space would be a minimum of 6 but could be as many as 15 (Walker Hanging System). Only wall hung pieces are appropriate to this space, 2-D and low profile 3-D. If you would like your art to be considered for display please send digital images, biography and statement to Sally Jeppson, Gallery Manager at sjeppson@jamestownarts.com.

take note Arts After School students Exhibit

From October through January selected artwork from two Arts After School sessions, Welcome to the Zoo and What Does it Feel Like will be on display in JRMC’s rotating artist gallery and Hansen Studio. The works are a combination of wonderfully creative and whimsical paper mâché critters and unique landscape collages. The students are so proud of their work and we wanted to share them. Building creativity in youngsters is at the heart of the AAS program — skills so important in our world. Watch this video, a great way to share the importance of education in the arts: http://tinyurl.com/oxrpre5. Started over ten years ago, the AAS program has become exceeding popular–often filled to capacity. Growing with the times, all class registrations are taken and tracked on-line through the Arts Center’s web site www.jamestownarts.com/artsafterschool.
