From the director’s desk:
This letter isn’t actually coming “from the director’s desk.” It’s coming from my rocking chair. At the time that I write this, Bart’s and my son Luke is now ten days old, and I’m technically on maternity leave.
Cyndi Wish Executive Director
So here is how I’m beginning 2017, with a new baby and observing my 41st birthday. I’m an old new mom and that’s okay, though it is interesting to be this age and to feel like a total rookie. One of my favorite things to ask someone is “When is the last time you did something for the first time?” I like to hear peoples’ answers and to watch their faces as they process the question and decide what defines “something” and what warrants mentioning. I ate a bite of lutefisk, I wrote an ode, I had a baby. An eloquent writer could extend this thought and connect it to an advocacy statement for trying new things and living creatively and embracing novelty at any and all stages of life, and then to tie all of that into the mission of The Arts Center. It’s not a far stretch. But frankly, I’m preoccupied right now so I’ll leave making that connection to you. I hope that your 2017 is filled with adventure and creativity, and the knowledge that, when it comes to new challenges, fear is really only one breath away from excitement.

WOMEN BEHIND THE PLOW January 12 – February 11, 2017 Opening reception January 12, 2017 at 5:30 pm. The James Valley Chapter of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society will provide traditional food favorites. Catch a glimpse of life on the prairie through the lens of women who grew up on or raised their families on farms in German-Russian Country. This Tri-County Tourism Alliance historic preservation project called, “Women Behind the Plow,” premiered at the 2015 Wishek Sauerkraut Day and has since traveled the state. It will be on exhibit at The Arts Center during January. Sixteen panels feature photos and short memories created from interviews collected with assistance from a State Historical Society of North Dakota grant. This project honors the unrecognized contribution of women who grew up or lived on farms in Logan County, McIntosh County, and Emmons County. Many stories of farming prior to rural electrics bringing electricity to the sometimes harsh prairies have never been told. How did these women learn about providing for families, sewing clothes, or crocheting the scarce niceties in their homes? In addition to being wives and mothers, many were farm hands, healers, teachers, housekeepers, and artists. They kept traditional holidays and religious customs. Unseen and unrecognized many of these women did what they had to without recognizing the importance of their contribution to the economic growth of the state. ~Sue Balcom, Women Behind the Plow exhibit designer.
The Tri-County Tourism Alliance was formed as a nonprofit three years ago to support heritage tourism in an area largely settled by Germans from Russia in three counties in North Dakota: Logan County, McIntosh County and Emmons County. Anyone interested in preserving the culture of this unique group of people is invited to attend the meetings. For more information contact President Carmen RathWald at (701) 754-2504. ART50! February 16 – March 25, 2017 50 artists for 50 years—The North Dakota Art Gallery Association (NDAGA) and the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA), with support from Starion Bank, organized two exhibits to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the North Dakota Council on the Arts. The exhibits display artwork of 50 North Dakota artists, as well as the work of the exhibit curator. One of these exhibits is currently displayed in the Heritage Center in Bismarck (through April 30, 2017), and the other is a touring exhibit which The Arts Center will host from February 16 – March 25, 2017. In this exhibit you will encounter familiar artists and meet newcomers. According to the curator, Linda Olson, these “artists, emerging and seasoned, take their place in the history of this great state, and their fine art works showcase the diversity among them and the connection they have to North Dakota.” A catalog featuring the biographies and statements of each artist accompanies the exhibition and will be available for purchase.
“Two years after national legislation created the National Endowment for the Arts in 1965, the North Dakota state legislature established the North Dakota Arts and Humanities in 1967, as an official agency of the State of North Dakota. In 1980, the official name was shortened to the North Dakota Council on the Arts. During NDCA’s fifty years, it has provided varied services to the citizens of North Dakota. The agency addresses the need for creativity in public education and enhances arts education. NDCA increases the economic impact the arts have on our state and on local communities, improves the wellness of our citizens through the use of arts programming, preserves our cultural heritage through folk and traditional arts mentorships, and enhances the quality of life for all of our citizens.” ~ Beth Gigante Klingenstein, PhD; Executive Director, NDCA

a look inside Welcome Our NEW ARTIST IN RESIDENCE BIOGRAPHY
Nicole Gagner is a painter living and working in Bismarck, North Dakota. Although the majority of her studio work is oil on canvas, still life, and regional landscape she draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, often of a personal and almost autobiographical nature. The recurring themes of Nicole’s work would be energetic mark making and a vibrant palette. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Pablo Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Nicole believes that art can and should be accessible to everyone, especially children. There should not be a stigma or wall built around art—there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn from in the art world, as long as you keep your eyes and mind open. A love for art is also a gateway to a love for life-long learning—there is always more that the art world can teach us if we stay engaged. We are excited to welcome Nicole to town. She will be working with the students at Roosevelt Elementary school starting in January. She is also looking forward to offering art classes for adults. Get to know her better at the next Artful Happy Hour!

arts park activity WINTER Ice sculpture for the park Collaborative Community Ice Block Sculpture. The Hansen Arts Park. February 3 – 12, 2017. Last year’s ice sculpture faced some unusually warm weather... This winter sounds like it will be plenty cold, so we are doing this fun winter activity again! Community members are invited to create their own ice block shapes and deliver them to the park during Jamestown’s annual Cabin Fever Days (February 3 – 12, 2017). Anyone can contribute. Ice blocks can be any size, color and shape. The sculpture will grow and change throughout the week as more ice shapes are added. There is no right or wrong way to participate, just add as many pieces as you would like throughout the week and watch the sculpture grow. Helpful hint: When assembling and stacking your blocks pour a dribble of fresh water over the bottom block, count to 10, then set the next block on top. The thin layer of fresh ice in between will help stabilize your structure. Colored ice blocks are easy to make with various containers, food coloring and water. Mix the coloring of your choice, with water (a little color goes a long way) and set outside to freeze. After the water is frozen solid, pop your colored ice block out of the container. Then bring all your blocks to The Arts Center to add to the sculpture.
