From the director’s desk:

Cyndi Wish Executive Director

Happy March and April! I usually try to use this section to look forward to upcoming events or programs, but today I am reflecting on the past two months and I am humbled? overwhelmed? bewildered? with gratitude. So much of this community is always supportive of The Arts Center, but for some reason it has seemed much more visible in the past two months. I am grateful for the hard work the staff here does, and how they have kept everything progressing beautifully while I have been on maternity leave. I am grateful for the guys who voluntarily chipped all of that thick ice off of The Arts Center’s sidewalks and, when thanked, said it was “their pleasure.” I am grateful for all of the donors who made our Giving Hearts Day a success, the ten dollar donors and the five thousand dollar donors and everyone in between. I am grateful to the Stutsman Harley Davidson for hosting our gala and helping haul all the tables and chairs up from the Quality Inn, set them up for our event, then helped haul them all back afterward. I am grateful to the gala committee for their charismatic dedication to our biggest annual fundraiser. I’m grateful for all the support, large and small, that this organization receives. So grateful I want to shout about it. I started trying to thank everyone when I had the microphone at the gala, but Casey came and took it out of my hand before I started to sound like a blithering idiot, and I’m grateful for that too. Thank you!

Thank you to Jamestown Tourism for helping to make this upgrade possible.

ten years of notstock April 1 – May 6, 2017

From the cover: Zeb Love, screen print screen print 24” x 18”, 2014 NOTSTOCK is an annual live, hands-in, hands-on arts event held at Minot State University every fall since 2007. NOTSTOCK is a portmanteau derived from the words Woodstock, Flatstock, and Minot’s mantra, “Why not, Minot?” This signature arts event has fostered education, opportunity, engagement, and exposure to the arts. NOTSTOCK has showcased poster art, ceramics, poetry, writing, film, theatre, foreign language, broadcasting, dance, and music. This exhibit features poster art made by the NOTSTOCK printmaking artists. Guests have ranged from newcomers to those who are nationally recognized and honored for their work. Artists have come to Minot State University to work, collaborate, and share their knowledge, talents, and experiences with MSU students, K – 12 and postsecondary students and teachers, community members, and other guests who attend and participate. The event has evolved from a one-day event with one artist in 2007 to a multi day event with multiple artists and art forms. Handmade poster art has a long tradition, particularly in advertising for music industry concerts. “Historic” posters, like those from the 60s, are highly collectible and have attracted new audiences to this medium. The NOTSTOCK artists captured the nostalgic flavor and style of these earlier poster designs and visitors to this exhibit will enjoy how these artists’ creative designs address a variety of subjects. Both of these exhibits are supported in part by a grant to the North Dakota Art Gallery Association from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

mentoring artists JAMESTOWN ARTS CENTER PILOTS NEW TEACHING ARTIST PROGRAM FOR THE STATE North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) and The Arts Center have combined resources to provide training and support to new and prospective teaching artists working in ND schools through the Teaching Artist Mentorship Program. The mission of the NDCA’s, Arts in Education program is designed to enrich and support arts education throughout North Dakota. This mission is supported by the belief that professional artists can enhance the educational process and provide inroads to learning that are engaging, creative, and meaningful. Teaching artists represent all disciplines including craft, dance, literary arts, media arts, music, storytelling, theatre, visual arts, folk/traditional arts, and multicultural arts. To provide teaching artists with the skills needed to successfully translate their work within the academic setting, NDCA and The Arts Center are spearheading a Teaching Artist Mentorship Program that matches prospective teaching artists with experienced, and successful teaching artists. Together, the new teaching artist and experienced mentor collaborate to develop effective and engaging lessons that will meet the needs of students and teachers. In addition, this team approach will allow the mentor to provide support and feedback for improvement throughout the project. The Arts Center’s facility and unique and ongoing partnership with Jamestown Schools make it a perfect choice for launching the Teaching Artist Mentorship Program. Selected to kick-off this program is Jamestown artist Bonnie Tressler and new teaching artists Nicole Gagner and Linda Roesch. Bonnie has been affiliated with The Arts Center since 1993 as a volunteer, employee, and as a teaching artist. She is currently concentrating on her own studio work but has agreed to mentor new artists to maintain the strength of the artist in residence program.

Nicole Gagner standing in front of her mural in downtown Bismarck’s Art Alley. Nicole Gagner is a ND native having recently returned to ND. Nicole studied at Augusta State University in Georgia where she obtained her fine arts degree. Nicole is primarily a painter and recently made a significant mural contribution to Bismarck’s Art Alley. Bonnie and Nicole met to plan Nicole’s first residency at Roosevelt Elementary school where she worked with students in grades K – 5. Classes based on Nicole’s passion for drawing and painting as well as the state education standards were the focus of the planning sessions. Nicole’s residency ended in February. Bonnie then accepted the mentorship of Linda Roesch (who is our current Artist in Residence). We are happy to bring Linda to our community to share her passion for art. She has begun working with students at Gussner elementary and will continue on to St. John’s academy later in the year. Linda is also going to be offering art classes for adults, home school families, elderly, and rural schools at the Arts Center. Stop by our next Artful Happy Hour and meet Linda. The program is proving very successful. Both artists have worked well in the classroom thanks to their mentorship. Thank you to the North Dakota Council on the Arts for helping The Arts Center nurture new teaching artists for North Dakota.

This program was made possible by the North Dakota Council on the Arts which receives funding from the legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
