From the director’s desk:

Cyndi Wish Executive Director

Many of you are already aware that The Arts Center is currently a finalist for an ArtPlace America grant to develop the Arts Park. ArtPlace America is a ten-year grantmaking initiative, funded through a collaboration of foundations and donors, whose focus is on “Creative Placemaking.” This is an exciting time, as the National Endowment for the Arts celebrates its 50th year of existence, when the arts are finally being viewed as more than just a luxury; the arts are a vital part of community infrastructure and development. Here’s a confession: starting my job here at The Arts Center with the development of the Arts Park on the table makes me feel like dancing and crying at the same time. I went to a tiny art school, where I learned art for art’s sake. I’ve held a career in small, nonprofit arts organizations because I strongly believe in community based arts programming and education. Through park development meetings, I am receiving a quick education about landscape architecture, urban planning, North Dakota perennials, electrical and data grids, and clay pavers. I had lunch with Chad Kainz last month and confessed my feelings about the Arts Park project. He said, “A good project should make you a little nervous. It means you are doing something brave.” We had a great site visit from ArtPlace’s program assistant Leila Tamari, and Paul Bonin-Rodriguez, an external reviewer from the University of Texas at Austin. Several community partners on the Arts Park project attended. As the conversation developed, it was exciting to listen to people talk about all of the research, planning, and energy that have already gone into the Arts Park. The project is truly in the hands of a team of experts; knowledgeable advisors; and community supporters. It’s going to be great.

Can you VISUALIZE the potential in this space?

The vision of a lively, vibrant, beautiful community green space downtown is becoming a reality thanks to so many volunteers, donations, grants, and lots of community support. After a year of community meetings, planning and numerous site plan alterations we are ready to break gound for the Arts Park. Construction is planned in three phases, and begins this spring with excavating, grading, lawns and sidewalks. Requests for proposals for the artistic elements will also be going out. What do you imagine in this space? L et us know your thoughts. There is so much potential, so many ideas, such a variety of activites and approaches. We would love to know what you vizualize in this s pace. Ways to share: •

Posters of the wall (pictured) will be placed around town. All are welcome to write or draw in ideas—don’t hold back, this is your opportunity to contribute.

• You can e-mail The Arts Center with ideas: info@jamestownarts.com with your ideas, photos, comments or other feedback. Your opinion matters!

“The Arts Park will be a great addition to the revitalization of downtown Jamestown. It will be a valuable resource to residents of all ages, limited only by the depth of imagination. As we continue to grow as a city, we need to continue to grow our educational and artistic opportunities as well, and the Arts Park will assist in both. I am excited to see this project go forward.” Bob Toso - Superintendent, Jamestown Public Schools (Retired) & President, Jamestown / Stutsman County Development Corporation Board of Directors

exhibitions revolving gallery exhibitions every four to six weeks

oil & water: A Printmaking Exchange On display through March 14, 2015 The use or misuse of our natural resources is an issue that generates much debate. This dialog is particularly important today in North Dakota as our state experiences an oil boom in the west and extensive flood mitigation in the east. It’s not just a discussion for politicians or environmentalists everyone who lives in the state is touched one way or another by these two issues. Some people profit from North Dakota’s precious resources and some are devastated.

Saturday, March 7 at 3:00 pm. Heidi Goldberg from Concordia College, who helped organize the show (who is also a participant) will speak about the exhibition. Free. At The Arts Center Gallery. Refreshments provided. (There are pieces from 37 different artists.) Whether dealing with issues Bakken #1, Michael Conlan of flooding and diversion in the digital screenprint, gold leaf Red River Valley or oil development and fracking on the Bakken Oil Formation, the artists have captured all points of view. The prints show a wonderful diversity of approaches to the conversation. Some prints elegantly portray the changing landscape while some graphically denounce the tragedy and devastation that is occurring. So far we don’t see oil rigs on Jamestown’s horizon but flooding and water quality have certainly touched our community. We see changes resulting from what’s happening in the oil-rich west; traffic, new residents, etc. The Arts Center encourages everyone to visit this exhibition; these artists have worked hard to creatively make us think about two of the state’s most important natural resources. This exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

.Elements. March 19 – April 25, 2015 At some point, whether realized or not, all artists learn the seven elements of art and the seven principles of design. These are the building blocks used by artists to translate what is seen in visual art. This show is a retrospective of the images used to illustrate these elements and principles to students during Anna’s 2-year residency. (She is the current artist-in-residence for The Arts Center.) Anna Jacobson, a North Dakota native, graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a BA in studio art in 2003. She earned a Master in Fine Art from the cover: with an emphasis in Printmaking from 0909 r.Iron.o, Anna Jacobson, 2009 the University of North Dakota in 2010. red iron oxide on mulberry Anna works as an artist in her own studio combining printmaking, painting, and book arts. a look inside bringing quality arts education to homeschooled children in our area Did you know The Arts Center is the sole provider of arts education for Jamestown elementary schools? That’s right. The primary focus of our Artist in Residence is to serve the local elementary schools. It was recently brought to our attention that there are young students in Jamestown who are homeschooled and are not receiving the benefit of the arts education. Working together with our Artist in Residence and parents we created a series of quality arts classes specifically for these children. Over the past 6 weeks these classes were well attended and the students greatly enjoyed the experience. Classes explored various mediums from ceramics, printmaking, paper mâché, and art fundamentals. Future classes in are in the planning process. It was a successful collaboration and we would like to continue to provide this service for homeschooled children.

“Our family loved the homeschool classes offered by The Arts Center. It was a lovely way to spend our Wednesday afternoons. Anna and Bill both taught their specialty. Having a teacher who is knowledgeable and excited about a particular discipline, offers the perfect opportunity for learning.” ~ Lisa Lang, mother of children in the homeschool program Is your group, class, or club getting the creative arts opportunities it needs? Would your child enjoy an wildly artistic birthday party with one of our artists? Please contact Miranda Letherman, Education Coordinator (artsed@jamestownarts.com) if you would like to organize such a program.

2nd ACT Community Theater Production: In You Can’t Get There From Here (a comedy written by Pat Cook) the Mavis Garner Bed & Breakfast is not the sort of place you’d find on a freeway or even a map. That’s because they get most of the customers from cars disabled when they hit the pothole on Main Street. Scandal-sheet reporter Arthur Lyman decides to do an expose on the pothole “scam” and checks into the bed and breakfast. During his stay he’s fined eight times, dragged across town by the local watchdog and fired from his job. What else could he do but fall in love with one of the proprietors! When his boss shows up and takes over the story, he’s treated to scenes from Shakespeare, slipshod seances and a witch who can’t keep her hexes straight.
