THE ARTS CENTER What’s Inside: A Word From Our Director

From the director’s desk:
“Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.” - Lyndon Johnson, on signing into existence the National Endowment on the Arts (NEA).
Cyndi Wish Executive Director
I will admit that I prefer to keep my head happily in the sand when it comes to acknowledging the effects government has on daily life; but with coverage of the primaries dominating all media I find it impossible to ignore. For the past 51 years, the NEA has worked to support artistic programs, preserve art histories, and assist in funding the creation of new art. So many of the Jamestown Fine Arts Association’s programs are funded with assistance from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the NEA. Now tell me, if you have been following debates, primaries, or listening to campaign coverage on the radio, how many times have you heard the arts mentioned? Probably not many, because the arts aren’t a “loud” issue. The arts quietly support all aspects of existence; physical and mental well being, economic development, education, innovation, foreign relations, rehabilitation… to name a few. The arts can bridge gaps between people of different ages, races, cultural backgrounds, and economic statuses. If you dig deep enough, you can find creativity in the foundation of all progress towards a healthy, functional, thriving society. But without a voice, it is easy to overlook the importance of the arts. If you care about the arts (and if you are reading this, I think that you do), please consider contacting your federal and state officials to let them know how you feel. In ND we have a statewide advocacy group called Arts North Dakota (artsnorthdakota.com) who make it easy to contact to your representatives. On their website, if you click on “Take Action” you will be brought to a page where you can look up a list of your officials and e-mail them all at once. There are a lot of issues being discussed on the Hill these days. Please consider helping to ensure that continued support of the arts is one of them. Thank you!

THE PROOFS Michael Birchler, Reflections, Photograph, 2015
exhibitions revolving gallery exhibitions every four to six weeks
the proofs: VSCU Student Exhibition March 3 – April 2, 2016 This group exhibition is a culmination of works created by current and alumni of the Valley City State University (VCSU) Art students. The title comes from the premise of art in a continual working state, we can learn from our proofs to create variations in their craft, materials, concepts and final products. The students are in various stages of their art careers, continuously reflecting on their proofs and sketches to reach their final goals. The display of work, demonstrates the range of talent found within VCSU’s Art students across both 2D and 3D mediums. Featured artists include: Hayden Swanson, Katarina Boychuk, Megan Fuller, Kaylee Johnson, Cassy Gilbertson, Megan Trautman, Esther Keeling, Hailie Wilds, Ashley Smethers, Brock Drenth, Michael Birchler, Kaitlyn Huss, Katie Oakes and Brenna Winters. closing Reception: Friday, April 1 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm Then stay after the reception for the Robby Vee concert at 7:30 pm. The Arts Center approached VCSU art faculty to consider mounting a student show. Our goal is to engage more students in our programming and to give students an opportunity to mount an off-campus gallery exhibition in a professional setting. It has been a learning process for all involved. Much thanks is owed to professor Karri Dieken and Armando Ramos for guiding the students through the process. The VCSU arts students are also involved in designing sculptural bike racks for The Hansen Arts Park, teaching classes for Artful Happy Hour and at the Anne Carlsen Center. These collaborations are essential, providing the Arts Center with needed help and creativity and the students with “real world” experience.
NUANCES by Michelle Lindblom April 7 –May 7, 2016 The title “Nuances” describes the visual subtleties of the textures, colors, shapes, and movements in nature which are an apt metaphor for our everyday encounters. Lindblom has always been intensely mindful of her surroundings and as her artistic journey continues, she has found a heightened sensitivity and an increased interest in engaging and visualizing those everyday encounters. The resulting visual nuances are intriguing and unique, much like nature herself. The exhibition is a result of the artist’s experimentation with and assimilation of the monotype and collage processes. These processes lend themselves well to the concept of layering materials from the cover: and ideas. Her approach Nuances XXX, mixed media Chine-colle’ monotype to experimentation and discovery is both conscious and subconscious, not unlike like that of a child playing and naturally interacting with his/her environment. Lindblom layers up to four monotypes on a single piece with the addition of a variety of other materials adhered to the surface she creates her multi-layer collages. Organized by color; shades of violet, shades of red, and earth tones the artist captures the atmospheric subtleties of an abstracted Nature. Ms. Lindblom was born and raised in ND, receiving her undergraduate degree in art from the University New Orleans, LA, Master of Science degree in educational administration and Master of Fine Art from UND. Michelle taught painting and drawing at Bismarck State College for 24 plus years and just recently retired as a tenured full Professor. She has exhibited her work all over the U.S. and has traveled extensively. Michelle currently resides in Bend, OR. This exhibit of forty five 18x15 framed collaged monotypes visually express Michelle’s reverence for and dialogue with nature and it’s subtle nuances. This exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

MOON MOUSE
A cosmic adventure about celebrating differences The Arts Center is bringing this illuminated live theater experience with a positive social message to the K – 5 grade students in Jamestown. Marvin the mouse wants to be popular. Constantly bullied and picked on by the “cool” rats, he is labeled as a loser and a geek. As respite from the continuous badgering, he retreats into his science books and a world of fantasy. He longs to have adventures, to be the hero.
