From the director’s desk:

It’s spring here in Downtown Jamestown. Well… Almost.

Cyndi Wish Executive Director

I thought I’d write about how hopeful springtime seems, but I’m not sure how to, and I’m having a particularly inarticulate and disjointed day. Every year, when spring hits, one can’t help thinking about cycles: day into night, seasons of the year, where the moon sits in the sky, and how most things move from light to dark to light again. So today I am thinking about how downtowns go through cycles as well. Like the seasons, or the moon, downtowns possess a certain phoenixological immortality. Granted, I haven’t been in this downtown for very long. But it is heartwarming that Jackie Sather, our neighbor at “Top of the Stairs Dance Studio” has asked to use The Arts Center for a demonstration of classical ballet, and to see children leave our after school program to walk through the park to attend music lessons with our other neighbor, the Two Rivers Performing Arts School. Within our one small block there are three separate facilities where people are dancing and learning movement, creating art, and making music. Also within a two block radius is some pretty great food. I think what I am trying to say is that downtown kind of glimmers right now, and it’s an honor to come to work here. Do you know what I mean? Come check it out and see if you can feel it too.

inspired by shadow Donna Watts, Blossoms with Green Apples, oil on canvas, 18.5” x 15”

exhibitions revolving gallery exhibitions every four to six weeks

Inspired by shadow by Donna Watts May 12 – June 11, 2016 The exhibition title, “Inspired by Shadow,” is not meant to be ominous. Over the centuries, artists have been stimulated by light with art books and articles extolling the merits of highlighting. When Watts teaches theory in her classes, she shows students that really great highlights are partnered with really deep shadows. The old masters utilized this partnership to bring the subject matter into the foreground. Motivated by these techniques, Watts has created a series of still lives in the old style. In each painting, the artist uses old master techniques and materials–all rendered in oil paint made of the same ground pigments used centuries ago. The subjects found in the exhibition include portraits and traditional still lives (fruit, vases, etc.) Several pieces were the result other artists and photographers challenging Watts to finish a painting of their chosen arrangement within 72 hours. This exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Arts Center gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. There is no admission charge.

JAMESTOWN: The Great Buffalo, Tin Can Alley, & The Writer’s Block by Mark Strand June 16 – July 30, 2016 Sixteen months ago, Mark Strand approached The Arts Center with the concept of an exhibition— a photographic documentary on Jamestown. During the planning it became clear that Strand is a great fan of the community, its people and its history. He has befriended artists, authors, and local historians to amass tidbits of the town’s colorful history and he has used his from the cover: Red Corner, 8 x 10, photograph photographic skill to above: Hot Rod & Eagle, 8 x 10, photograph capture its many details. The whole project was driven by the artist’s wish to document our historic buildings before they might suffer the same fate as King Photography studio which burned in December, 2005 (now the Hansen Arts Park). Visitors will see over 70 large-scale color photographs featuring Jamestown’s historic architecture, surrounding neighborhoods, and the James River Valley. The photographs were taken by Strand during the past five years and were inspired by the writing of local authors, Bruce Berg (Writer’s Block), Tom Elhard (Musings from Tin Can Alley) and Gordon Webber (The Great Buffalo Hotel). Artwork from the Strand’s personal collection will enhance the exhibition, including sculpture by Elmer Petersen (the creator of the Giant Buffalo), photographs and prints by Kent Horton and others.

Gallery Lunches: You are guaranteed to learn something you never knew about Jamestown. Bring your own lunch or we will prepare one for you ($5.00). June 29: “The Stories They Tell” with architectural historians Steve Martens and Ronald Ramsay, co-authors of the recently published book Buildings of ND. Both are architectural historians and faculty of the Department of Architecture, NDSU. July 20: “What Ever Happened to Elmer Petersen”? with Mark Strand and Kent Horton. RSVP for lunch by Friday, June 24 and July 15. Over the years, Mark Strand has been a great champion for the arts. He is an artist, a professor, and a collector. He taught at both NDSU and MSUM and is no stranger to documentary photography projects. Strand has regularly exhibited at the Rourke Art Museum in Moorhead, MN and was president of the organization from 1986-96. This is his second show at The Art Center. The first, a photo documentary on M.I.T., was in 1986.
