“Retire: to stop working willingly” is forced upon some while it is celebrated by others. I have made the decision to stop working willingly at the end of JFAA’s next fiscal year – June 1014. Because I really like what I do (most days), this is a difficult decision, however, a good one for the organization and for me – more time to play with our new granddaughter and new leadership taking the organization to greater heights! Each Arts Center Executive Director has brought different gifts and a different focus for development – as will the next director. Think about everything this organization has already developed! From the early beginning as a ladies art club in 1976 to currently owning a newly renovated Arts Center, Hansen Arts Studio, Kirkpatrick Gallery and developing an Art Park… these are significant physical developments. The real accomplishments, however, are the ways in which the Arts Center programs, events, activities, classes etc. touch the lives of area residents. The arts help us connect to one another, develop community and define sense of place in ways other activities don’t. The organization’s membership has provided the means for this development and changes that have created Arts After School, community theatre, the renovations, and have helped secure matching funds for Caravanserai and other programs that brought international musicians to Jamestown. As the Arts Center continues to grow, it will continue to play a significant role in community growth… because we actively implement the maxim “Be the change you want to see in the world” (or our community). Thank you for the support over the zillion years I seem to have worked here. I have very selfishly benefited from the challenges, growth experiences, artist interactions, performances, and friendships I have been able to develop. The next director will benefit from the opportunities the Arts Center provides and the support you give. Support for the Arts Center’s work will continue to be as important after my retirement as it is now!

Students will be guided through the drawing and painting of a still life arrangement. No experience necessary. All supplies will be provided. Black & White Photography with Matthew Leitner July 23, August 6 & 18 from 6 - 8:00 pm The Hansen Arts Studio • $50 members / $60 non-members This class is designed to teach the student how to operate a manual SLR camera as a means to create expressive works of photography, utilizing black & white film as the primary medium. The techniques employed in film photography are applicable to digital photography as well. A manual SLR film camera is preferred. The instructor will make B&W film and film processing available for purchase.

Photographer of the american west Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) July 10 – August 24, 2013 A visit to The Arts Center this summer will take you to times past and give you a nostalgic look at early Montana and North Dakota. Photographer Of The American West, an exhibition of historical western photographs by L.A. Huffman opens on Wednesday, July 10 at 7:00 pm.
Special Presentation & opening Reception with exhibit developer Mark Browning and Bev & Gene Allen, contributors to the book “LA Huffman: Photographer of the American West” Wednesday, July 10th at 7:00 pm The exhibit kicks off with a Special Presentation by the exhibition’s developer Mark Browning. In 1995, when he assumed the Director’s position at the now named WaterWorks Art Museum (Miles City, MT), he began their efforts at collecting the vintage works of early day photographers that recorded the history of a changing west in the 1800s. Arriving in 1879, Laton Alton (L.A.) Huffman was one of those figures and the one that remained in the area for the duration of his life. Huffman traveled across North Dakota several times in addition to his work relating to the building of the railroads. For the next eighteen years, Browning oversaw the photo collection that grew to about five-hundred images, of which nearly a third are L.A. Huffman’s.

In THE arts center Lobby — Matthew Leitner Starting July 1st, the Lobby Gallery will feature the black & white photographs of Matthew Leitner. His work focuses primarily on landscapes and is reminiscent of the work of early 20th century photographers. Leitner uses film to capture his images. Matthew will be teaching a traditional photo class. “The Inspiring Art of Black & White Photography” beginning July 23. See the “classes” section for details.
THE JFAA - 2013 Annual juried show The prospectus for the 2013 Annual JFAA Juried Show will be available July 1. Anyone interested in exhibiting should contact us to receive entry details. Anyone who has exhibited in the past will receive the prospectus via email. If your email has changed recently please send your new address to sjeppson@jamestownarts.com. As in past years, artists can submit up to three artworks. Once installed the exhibit is juried for prizes. This exhibit is an annual favorite and a terrific way for emerging artists to gain exposure.

“Oy Vey” is Jewish for “ Uff-da”! by Elisa Korenne The idea for‘Oy Vey’ is Jewish for ‘Uff-da!’ originated in Elisa Korenne’s experience moving from New York City, where she lived next door to millions of fellow Jews, to New York Mills, where she was the only Jewish person for 100 miles, or so it seemed. Strangely, Elisa noticed Jewish names on street signs and store awnings, and she began to wonder why. With her experience writing songs based in history, Elisa started researching the Jews who once lived near her new hometown. She discovered that in the 19th- and 20th-centuries, many Jews immigrated to the rural upper Midwest, many to be farmers. Elisa had never heard of Jewish farmers, and she was smitten with the idea of learning more about them. Elisa’s findings have been transformed with songwriting and storytelling into a fascinating hour of stories and songs about this small, unlikely group of rural Minnesotan & North Dakotan Jews. ‘Oy Vey!’ is Jewish for ‘Uff-da!’ bridges a large gap in the knowledge of and about Jews, especially in this area where they are uncommon. The show makes people laugh and empathize with some of the most fascinating characters in history.

2013 ANNUAL JAMESTOWN MINIATURE ART HUNT The hunt begins July 20, 2013 and ends when all ten art works are found. Don’t miss out on this family-fun adventure to seek out and own original miniature artworks by local artist Bill Nybo.
ARTWORK HUNTING! All artwork will be hidden in plain sight within Jamestown
public parks. Visual clues to the artwork hiding places will be posted on our blog (featured on the Jamestown Sun website) and posted in the window at the Hansen Art Studio during the weekend. First clue: 10am Saturday, Second clue: 3 pm Saturday, Third clue 10 am Sunday, Final clue 3 pm Sunday.
