Taylor Barnes Executive Director
Fall – the change in seasons – not only means a change in our artists in residence and after school programs, but also, a change of staff. Jessica Christy has acted as the education coordinator for the past year. She is a talented artist with a master of fine arts and a list of exhibitions and awards that is impressive for such a young woman. It’s fitting that her new job will be teaching at Minot State University in the Fine Arts Department. Since her arrival at the Arts Center, Jessica has steadily streamlined, organized, monitored, evaluated and restructured the educational opportunities here, and has been a terrific advocate for the Arts Center. As an artist, Jessica was able to jump into the position (a challenging task for a non-arts major) and will be leaving the arts education position organized and ready for the new hire. We’re very grateful for the work and time Jessica has put in here and hope her immersion into the elementary schools will be helpful when she is teaching arts methods to education majors. The fall change of artists begins in September with the arrival of Anna Jacobson. Anna, a North Dakota artist, also with a master of fine arts, is moving here from Grand Forks. She has extensive teaching, exhibition and educational experiences with young students. Anna will be teaching Arts After School and working as an artist in the schools. In addition to Anna teaching visual arts, Bonnie Tressler will be teaching visual arts and art history, Northern Plains Dance will be teaching dance/creative movement, and Hampstead Stage will be presenting Greek Mythology for Kids II: Hercules and the Heroes. It’s a privilege to work with the elementary students and teachers and tie curriculum to visual arts, theatre and movement. Unlocking the spark for creativity and learning through the arts, can be a life-changing vehicle for students. Much of the educational work accomplished through the Arts Center is supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts via the North Dakota Council on the Arts. The House Appropriations Committee is proposing a 49% cut in NEA funding. It’s unfortunate that this is considered along party lines – when the impact is across the board. If you value The Arts Center’s work, please consider contacting your elected officials.

JFAA 49th Annual ART SHOW Open for public viewing Saturday, September 7th 10:00 am – 2:00 pm FROM THE COVER: A Horse Of Course, painting, by Sue Morrissey 2012
exhibitions revolving gallery exhibitions every four to six weeks
It’s not often we talk of the Annual Show before it opens, typically we announce the prize winners and include images from the installation. Think of this as a teaser— an enticement to come enjoy the show. This year, the show’s 49th year, will have over 90 pieces. So far the most prevalent category is photography followed by painting. You’ll see artists who are old favorites and encounter new ones. The show is a perennial Arts Center favorite simply because of the scale and the opportunity to see so many pieces. Many of the works are affordable so each year people often come to purchase original art. An added feature that makes the exhibition unique is its inclusivity. Some might argue that the quality of the art suffers when everyone is allowed to show their work, whether professional, amateur, beginner or youth but where else can these artists get an opportunity to share their efforts. We hope that the young, beginning and amateur can use the show to gain exposure and learn from the professionals. The Annual always gives me a challenging installation, the great diversity of medium, style and shear number of pieces makes laying out the show an adventure. I look for subtle relationships in color, theme and works that speak to each other. I might shift and reorganize the artwork several dozen times before I even hang an a single piece. Sometimes people recognize the “games” I play - its always fun to see people’s reaction.
