From the director’s desk:

In this age of email and digital messaging, it is always a challenge to write something more like a letter, that the reader will read possibly several days or weeks after it is written.

Cyndi Wish Executive Director

As I write this, I am sitting in my office while Alan Wish and Robert Murphy practice in the gallery for their concert tomorrow. I have always loved a sound check, where while musicians experiment with room acoustics and work to balance their sound. The minutiae of this process is lost to me, my ear doesn’t hear it. What I love is the fine tuning, the repetition of certain phrases in an attempt to make them sound better. To sound perfect. I like to think that I have a lot of music in my life, that I listen to it frequently, that I pay attention to the way sounds run together. But tonight, listening to these gentlemen warm up, I realize how infrequently I experience live musical performance. Recorded music is great, but you hear basically the same thing every time you listen to a recording. In live music, there is a phenomenon that happens between the musicians, the music itself, and the listener. That phenomenon can enlighten an exhausted evening, this one in particular, making it transcendental. Live music, theater, storytelling, exhibits… They are all worth it. It’s easy to not regret missing something when you don’t invest in it. So what I am going to attempt to remind myself is that I would rather be the person who says, “Oh my goodness, it was amazing!” than be the person who says, “I wish I could have made it to that one.” Your time, attention, energy; the arts are worth it. Hope to see you soon.

Watch it happen! Public demonstrations with sculptor Owen Fritts on Monday, September 19. In the Hansen Arts Park at 12:00 pm & 5:30 pm. Sculptor Owen Fritts will be continuing the installation of “Prairie Grass Ballet”, a large aluminum and granite installation designed specifically for the Hansen Arts Park. His multi-element, kinetic work of art will weigh tens of tons and stand up to 24’ tall at points. It will be a permanent feature of the park referencing the majesty of the prairie as it reminds us of the power of nature. Fritts completes several such large sculptures a year both nationally and around the world. Join him on September 19th as he will be describing his process, showing his techniques, and actively presenting in real-time as he works on the sculpture. He will happily answer questions you bring as he demonstrates what it takes to design and build large public art pieces.

ARTS PARK UPDATE: “Prairie Grass Ballet” After a long selection process sculptor Owen Fritts’ design was chosen for the permanent sculpture in the Hansen Arts Park. The sculpture is entitled “Prairie Grass Ballet” . There are three tufts (one large, one extra large and one small) that will be comprised of 27 to 31 blades each that form into groupings. The blades collectively form the tufts much like people form the prairie towns. The grass tufts will be anchored in 18 inch tall glacial moraine granite rocks collected locally. The 75-pound blades will react to prevailing northwest winds that force each blade to lean and support the entire 2-ton project so it cannot be blown over. “The “Prairie Grass Ballet” sculpture captures the essence of how grasses work together as communities to withstand and thrive in the vigorous North Dakota environment. As in most plant and animal groups the strength and beauty of the whole is composed of a multitude of individual traits, all unique. The sculpture tells this story through its large scale form and through narratives inscribed in its base.” ~Owen Fritts For more information on the project and to offer your financial support please visit jamestownarts.com/artspark. This project is made possible in part by grants from ArtsMidwest, the Bush Foundation and ArtPlace America as well as local business, city, and individual donations.

52nd JFAA Annual ART SHOW September 17 – October 22, 2016 I’m always amazed at the longevity of this exhibition, 52 years! Wow, it’s really extraordinary among community art shows. The JFAA Annual continues to be our most beloved exhibition of the year. Its inclusivity, with budding artists showing beside established names, and the breadth of mediums, from photography to jewelry, printmaking to ceramics, the exhibition supplies an interesting and engaging mix. For some it is their first foray into exhibiting—this year we have quite a few students. For some, it’s just a way to show something new and for others they might not have enough work for a big exhibit but they do Donna Chalimonczyk, Proud Pioneer, 2014, acrylic on have three works and it gives them paper, 16” x 20” a opportunity share their work with the public. I’m intrigued by some artists who seem to be dedicated to entering the show year after year. One local photographer, Kent Horton, exhibited for over 30 years. In fact, Kent and I have had a few discussions on just how many of these exhibits have actually occurred. During the remodeling of the facility, we actually took a year off, but the years kept passing so we just skipped that one—I’m not sure why I choose to do this, but I had some kind of rational explanation at the time. And then there is the artist, who enters his work and often times wins a prize, he has packing materials that are used over and over, ultimately there is at least a 1/4” of tape securing the box—perhaps he wants to recycle and see how long the box will survive making the box an artwork as each year passes. These artists, both new and stalwart, provide the JFAA Annual with its unique flavor that is anticipated and enjoyed by both the visitor and the exhibit’s installer. ~ Sally Jeppson, Gallery Coordinator

Native Impressions: In Our Own Words October 27 - November 26, 2016

Who are contemporary American Indian people in North Dakota? What are their stories? Printmaker Daniel Heyman came to North Dakota from Princeton University and was determined to ask those questions. The exhibition that resulted from Heyman's questions was the result of an intensive collaboration with tribal liaisons, graduate students from Rhode Island School of Design, and University of North Dakota art department staff and students (including Anna Jacobson, former Arts Center resident artist). The final outcome is an interdisciplinary project that combines portraits and written words to visually and verbally document the stories and lives of contemporary Native people in North Dakota. The portraits and text represent a broad range of people living on North Dakota’s four reservations including business people, farmers, ranchers, teachers, politicians, tribal leaders, and community members. The show is touring through the ND Museum of Art’s Rural Arts Initiative. Photo Id: Erich Longie, Ph.D.

“THE TELL” Comes to Jamestown

Saturday, October 15, 7:00 pm at The Arts Center The Arts Center is pleased to partner with Fargo’s “The Tell” to bring a storytelling event to Jamestown. Simply said, “The Tell” is a story slam held monthly during the fall and winter, typically in character-filled downtown Fargo. (But this October it will happen right here in Jamestown). More fully, the Tell is an opportunity for community connection. For human connection. And a really good time. Everybody’s got a story to tell. What’s yours? Storytellers and audience members of all backgrounds are welcome. You just need to show up. If you have a story to tell, bring it! (Stories must be told without using notes or props, and should be kept to under 5 minutes). Or just come to enjoy the evening. Tickets $5 Arts Center Members/$10 General Public. Stories WILL NOT be edited for language or content, and may discuss any and all themes. If you are sensitive to specific language or content, perhaps a different event will suit you better.
