From the director’s desk:

October was Arts & Humanities Month – a chance to highlight and celebrate the arts around us. Regionally, the month began with an Artist Studio Crawl in Fargo which featured artists in 41 studios. These artists are changing Fargo from the look of downtown to the dynamics of commerce.

Taylor Barnes Executive Director

The arts impact communities in unique ways and are not solely concentrated in larger cities. In Jamestown, artists range from those working in ceramics, glass, fiber, wood, photography, traditional arts, and two-dimensions… if you saw the JFAA 49th Annual Show, you were introduced to some of them. Collectively these artists may not (yet) have the significant impact seen in Fargo but the Jamestown Fine Arts Association (JFAA) does. JFAA has received a grant from Arts Midwest to begin the process of redefining our community. A pretty bold statement – but an accurate one! We have already altered the face of downtown with the renovated Arts Center, development of the Hansen Arts Studio and beginning of an Art Park. With this grant, we have the opportunity to be a significant driving force in downtown revitalization and community growth. The grant, for Art Park planning and development, will allow us to hire a facilitator/planning consultant to help gather information during several community meetings; a landscape architect to transform our ideas into a plan; and an illustrator to draft final renderings of the space. Physical spaces help us define who we are; reflect what we value; tie us to place; and help us celebrate beauty. Just imagine what a professionally developed, artistically designed space in the middle of downtown can say, do and be. In the next few months, we will be convening these community conversations. Everyone interested in making an investment in the future of Jamestown should attend one; send an email; give us a call; or deliver a list of suggestions you have for this Art Park project. Together we will imagine the possibilities and transform a once burned out plot into an attractive, welcoming green space downtown.

gallery talk put a bird on it Paul Noot and Ali LaRock October 24 – November 23, 2013

This exhibit features a variety of bird themed art by Bismarck artists, Ali LaRock and Paul Noot. Each piece of art featured in the show has a bird on it in a variety of styles and mediums. The title of the show was inspired by an episode of the popular television series “Portlandia” in which the characters go into a store and ‘put birds on things’ to make them more hip and sellable. Noot, and LaRock, both bird lovers, thought it was a fun idea for a show and they began their bird pieces, each drawing on different personal inspiration.

In THE arts center Lobby - Opening November 1, 2013 Firefighters, City and Rural Jerry Kainz – Member Artist Having retired from the Commercial Refrigeration & Heating trade, an Engineer for Jamestown Medical Hospital, hobbies have become important to Jerry. A constant interest throughout his life has been the camera, which in the last four decades has always been within arm’s reach. Many of the photos that will be exhibited are images from Jamestown Fire Department calls. Having documented these fire scenes for 45 years, Jerry is now attempting to depart from purely documentary shots to the softer side of photography–attempting to create interesting visuals that capture the serious and intense nature of a fire scene. Jerry says, “this is challenging” but dedication to his long-time passion is paying off–during last year’s 2012 JFAA Annual Show, one of Jerry’s dramatic firefighting scene captured the Juror’s Choice Award for Color Photography. Two elk antler cribbage boards. One has inlaid turquoise at the end. The other has an image of a turtle, a Great Blue Heron, a fish, the Roman numerals “MMVI” for the year it was created (2006), and along the sides the verse from James 1:19 of the Bible: “Let Every Man Be Swift To Hear, Slow To Speak, Slow To Wrath.” Both have inlaid copper dots. Beneath the cribbage board is a gun powder container made of cow horn with an image of a bobcat and a map detailing the Missouri and Heart Rivers, Square Butte, Scrimshaw and Lake Sakakawea of North Dakota. All pieces created by Drex Young. Photo by Troyd Geist.

Folklore & Folk Art of the Northern Great Plains November 27 – December 28, 2013 What do Monster Fish, Haunted Houses, Duck Decoys and Sunflower Pie have in common? They all represent folk art and folklore that is part of the rich history of the Northern Great Plains. The Sundogs and Sunflowers exhibition is based on the book, Sundogs and Sunflowers: Folklore and Folk Art of the Northern Great Plains. This groundbreaking compilation, thirty years in the making, celebrates the proud folk heritage of the Northern Great Plains. Published by the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA), the book was compiled and edited by North Dakota State University Professor Emeritus Dr. Timothy J. Kloberdanz and NDCA folklorist Troyd A. Geist. The exhibit includes full-color photographic panels that provide a sampling from each of the book’s 10 chapters. Like the book, the exhibit includes some stories and images people will recognize from their own family members, friends, and neighbors while other, less familiar selections will provide fascinating revelations. These panels are accompanied by original folk art objects drawn from the collection of the North Dakota Council on the Arts. Many of these pieces are representative of the artists highlighted in the Sundogs and Sunflowers book. Local Jamestown artists, Carroll Wentland and Drexel Young are featured, Carroll with his traditional carved (working) decoys and Drex with his scrimshaw. There is also beadwork, embroidery, woodcarving and quillwork. Take a look at this short online video of the Sundogs and Sunflowers book: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIDJ6zQstZ8.
