Taylor Barnes Executive Director
The post-it note that was placed on my desk requested “current thought from our fearless leader for 2012”. Most days I can muster fearless and some days I can adopt the mantle of leader, however, consistent fearless leader might be a stretch. I like the quote by Robert Jarvik, “Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them”. I can relate to that quote and it seems to sum up a benefit of being truly engaged in the arts. When the Jamestown Fine Arts Association Board of Directors launched a $1.5 million dollar renovation and development campaign, they didn’t let fear dissuade them. Given the other major campaigns in town, the Board also may not have been aware of the odds against them. Nonetheless, they led the way into the project and have successfully raised funds, transformed buildings and will develop the Arts Park. I do know that being engaged in the arts (the process of creating) helps develop leaders. Leadership requires making wise and deliberate choices—as does the creation of art. Creating requires taking a risk and managing change in the process—as does the successful leader. Whether choreographing a dance, composing music, creating a story or laboring over a painting, one has to develop a goal; assess the project; and wisely choose how to move it forward. As we move into 2012, I imagine that the Arts Center staff and the JFAA Board of Directors will continue to both lead and create as we imagine possibilities: assess project(s); and successfully engage Jamestown in the arts.

Faced with reality after their honeymoon high, the young couple clashes over the building’s disrepair, their eccentric neighbor, a surprise visit from Corie’s mother, and ultimately at the heart of it all, Corie’s free-spirited ways vs. Paul’s more conventional personality.
