I find myself reading an article titled “Beyond Therapy – Aging and the Arts” by David Surface. He says, “While creative arts programs appear to have a genuine therapeutic effect for older adults, changes in our understanding of the aging process also influence changes in our understanding of the relationship between aging and the arts. As we learn to view aging as a process of growth rather than deterioration, we also learn to consider the arts not as a remedy to problems but as tools to unlock human potential.” Regardless of our age, each of our toolboxes should include ways to unlock our human potential as well as our creative capacities. These metaphorical toolboxes mirror the functional ones Arts Center staff creates through arts programming. A strong foundational knowledge of the elements of art is something we are building in each elementary student. Artists hired to work in the schools are teaching pattern in kindergarten, line & shape in first grade, color in second grade, space (negative & positive) in third grade, form & texture in fourth grade and art history in fifth grade. By the time these students move to middle school, they will have the basic building blocks to expand their creative capacity and continue to unlock their potential. “Kids” of all ages, from these elementary students to the adults and seniors we work with at Ave Maria Village and the Heritage Center, can utilize arts enrichment to maintain their curiosity; remain open to new experiences; take risks; work hard to develop a skill; and appreciate each individual’s differences… tapping their potential.

ClassES for adults (16 years of age and older) Classes take place in the Hansen Arts Studio, unless noted differently. Intro to photography with Troy Gunderson Tuesdays, Aug 7 - 28 • 7:00 - 8:30 pm • $35 members / $45 non-members Get the most out of your camera and your desire to take great pictures! This introductory class will walk you through the principles of good photography, using your camera, and important terms & techniques. MOSAIC Garden Stepping Stones with Molly McLain Tuesday, Aug 7 & Thursday, Aug 9 • 6:30 - 8:00 pm • The Art Park $25 members / $35 non-members Add a creative touch to your garden. They can be as simple or elaborate, as practical or whimsical as you wish. To make these stones enjoyable at any time of day add some glow-in-the-dark details! Class will be working with concrete. Dress for a mess. Meet in the Hansen Arts Studio to begin the class. an artful happy hour Our monthly Tuesday artful happy hour will be suspended for the summer. We will start again this fall. If you are interested in providing input or helping to plan these monthly events, let us know!

Summer Kids camps Run through August Weekday summer programs run till the end of August at the Arts Center. Grades 1– 6. Class descriptions and registration available at the office or on our website. **ADDED** POTTERY WHEEL INTRO (Grades 2 - 6) July 30 - Aug 3 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm • Hansen Arts Studio • $35 members / $45 non-members Due to the overwhelming demand, an additional introduction to pottery wheel class has been added. This class is limited to 5 students. If interested, please sign up right away!

ART-IN-THE-PARK CELEBRATION to accompany the Opening of the JFAA 48th Annual Show This is a day for the entire family and a very special opportunity to meet artists, make art, see artists at work and view over 100 works of art. This extra special event kicks off the opening of the JFAA Annual Show in its 48th year. The exhibition has shifted from spring to summer and we thought that it would be fun to have a celebratory day that would utilize the Art Park and involve the community.
Join us for this exciting day of art-in-the-park: Saturday, August 4 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm in the Art Park Last summer we had great fun with Days of Culture and this event continues that tradition but focuses on the fine arts with special attention given to ceramics. Last summer people enjoyed watching our resident artist Tammy Jones create rich, earthy surfaces on pottery with a smoke firing demonstration. This summer, in addition to the smoke firing process, visitors will be able to see and participate in Raku firings conducted by Mark J. Lusardi, a dynamic potter from Minneapolis. special events FIRE IN THE HOLE a Community Clay Experience Let’s make some art! This summer community members, kids, artists, anyone who would like to participate is welcome to join in the fun. Throughout the summer people are asked to create a tile-like clay piece of their own design. This tile can represent anything you wish. Some of these tiles will be fired in the raku and wood smoke outdoor firings taking place Saturday, August 4th during our art-in-the-park celebration. Whether fired in the outdoor kilns or the traditional kilns in the Hansen Arts Studio, these tiles will ultimately be hung in the Art Park as part of a community clay installation.
The public can make a tile at the following events: • AAUW Annual Garden Tour Reception at The Arts Center July 18, 4:00 – 5:00 pm • White Cloud Parade Day outside the National Buffalo Museum Saturday, July 7, 11 am - 4 pm What configuration the final community clay installation will take is yet to be determined, but we welcome each and everyone to share their ideas.

take note The North Dakota Art Gallery Association (NDAGA)
NDAGA is looking for artists to submit their work for touring exhibitions. This is a great opportunity to get exposure. If an artist’s work is selected by member galleries for a cooperative tour, their work has the potential to reach audiences all across North Dakota. Both established and emerging artists are encouraged to submit proposals. If you don’t have enough work to fill a gallery (average size – 150 running feet) you can propose that work be considered for a group exhibition. Better yet, gather your artist-friends and propose a group or themed exhibition. We have a few prospectus forms at The Arts Center but a complete description of the requirements can be found on NDAGA’s website by clicking Artist Prospectus. The deadline for completed proposals is August 31, 2012 with notification November 15, 2012. Questions about the process should be directed to North Dakota Art Gallery Association ndaga@ndaga.org.
