summer exhibitions Born of Sand, Forged in Fire: Glass Arts On display .BZ – June 6, 2015 There are few arts more beautiful than glass, whether blown, fused, stained, etched, or carved they capture our attention. Perhaps it is their ability to transform light or their inherent fragility or how they are created that has fascinated people for over 5000 years. The idea to host a glass exhibition grew from an artist residency project. All area 5th graders complete their study of American Artists with the glass art of Dale Chihuly. Directed by teaching artist Bonnie Tressler, the students will create their own faux glass “chihulyesque” sculpture. These mini-sculptures will then be combined to create an installation of stunning color in the Arts Center lobby. The unveiling of the student installation will coincide with a residency-visit of Jon Offutt’s Mobile Glass Blowing Studio. Offutt’s studio will be set up in The Arts Park. On May 5 the public will get a preview of the children’s masterpiece and all are invited to view Offutt’s glass blowing demonstrations (on the hour from 1:00 - 6:00 pm) followed by a reception at 5:00 pm to view the Born of Sand, Forged in Fire: Glass Arts exhibit. The exhibit features regional glass artists Jaci Trefz, Barb Opp, Dan Zimney, Jason Lindell, Jon Offutt, Andrew Shea, Nicole Fierce, Malcolm Potek, Craig Campbell, Rand and Beth Whillock, who represent a broad range of glass arts.

A Walk in the Woods On display June 11– July 18, 2015 Consisting of artwork from the North Dakota Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection by artists who create images and constructions about wood or include wood as their material. Wood plays an important role by providing warmth, shelter, refuge, or a place to find food, shade, and much more. In fairy tales, legends, and folktales the woods or forests often have a very important purpose. Stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White depict woods as a daunting place to be avoided. On the other hand, Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed find tranquility and life. Much like these stories, the artists in this exhibition have different takes on wood and how it is used. Visitors to the exhibition will see photography, sculpture, wood-fire ceramics, wood block prints, plus work from the Museum’s new African collection. Artworks in the exhibition deal with necessity, aesthetics, and spirituality. At same time the exhibition contains works that are utilitarian and functional, yet artistic in design. This exhibit comes to The Arts Center through the North Dakota Museum of Art’s Rural Arts Initiative. Through this program the Museum organizes, delivers, and installs art exhibitions in towns throughout the State free of charge to the host community. In addition, the Museum’s Education Department develops lesson plans for each traveling exhibition. Lesson plans can be found at www.ndmoa.com.

Jackie McElroy: Prairie Prints Portfolio July 23 – August 23, 2015 Featuring screen prints by Jackie McElroy, retired Associate Art Professor and Chair of the Department of Visual Arts at the UND. The show is an overview of 26 of McElroy’s prairieinspired screen prints produced between 1975 and 1998. The prints were recently donated by McElroy to the Minot State University Permanent Art Collection. After receiving an MFA in painting from the University of Montana, McElroy began her teaching career at Northland State Junior College in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. She moved the following year to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where she taught printmaking and art history, all the while making art about the vast, empty-yet-full reaches of the Red River Valley. During her long and active career, she was represented by galleries in Chicago, St. Paul, and on the east coast. Her work was accepted to over 80 national juried print shows. This exhibit is made available to state-wide galleries through the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with funding from the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

Founded in 1969 by Ilonna Pederson, The New York Kammermusiker double-reed ensemble has traveled extensively throughout the world. The Kammermusiker is dedicated to presenting music to as broad an audience as possible. The group combines a repertoire ranging from the early Renaissance through Contemporary with an informal stage manner that invites the audience to know more about the works performed and the instruments used.

The New York Kammermusiker Wednesday, July 1st, 6:00 pm at The Arts Center This evening performance will begin with a conversation between musicians and audience, followed by musical performance. Tickets: Young people aged 18 and under will be admitted free of charge. Arts Center Members $10 / Non-Members $15. NYK IN DEPTH: The Arts Center will host an afternoon “drop-in” salon with the NYK from 3:00 – 5:00 pm. Local musicians, students, and historians can come converse with the NYK about Kammermusiker, try the instruments, and learn what makes Kammermusiker unique. This is a unique opportunity for local people to gain intimate, hands-on experience with a type of music not widely practiced in the region. This project is supported in part by grants from the North Dakota Humanities Council, ArtsMidwest and the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
