"with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. —For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —“ Isn’t it nice that Mark gives us a little education about Jewish culture and law? We can learn a lot about Mark and his readers by this little snippet from the 7th chapter of his Gospel. It’s pretty clear that Mark is not speaking primarily to a Jewish audience, otherwise why would he have to explain Jewish customs? Mark is an interesting Gospel because it is generally seen as the basis for Matthew and Luke’s Gospel (the Synoptic Gospels). Both Matthew and Luke generally follow Mark’s timeline and use much of his rough and sometimes harsh language. Both Matthew and Luke, fill the need to clean up Mark’s language, facts and treatment of the events of Jesus. In today’s Gospel, Mark doesn’t think his Gentile audience understands the problem that the Pharisees have with Jesus’ disciples and the way that they eat. He feels a need to explain the problem where Matthew and Luke don’t spend time explaining these sorts of things to their readers. It is passages like this that make studying the Gospels so fascinating to me. As we talk in our bible study groups (Wednesdays 7pm beginning after Labor Day) we must set aside all of our preconceived notions of each of the Gospels and let each Gospel tell it’s own story without our help. Too often we like to speak for the Gospel writer and fill in the blanks with information that is not necessarily there. To allow the Gospels to speak their own truth we must set aside what we think it says. We must set aside what we wish it said and let it stand on it’s own. Often, truly studying the Gospels in a dispassionate way, is uncomfortable. It bothers us because we struggle with what each Gospel, studied by itself, says and doesn’t say. Sometimes even as a Church, we read into the Gospel a little too much, making it say some things it does not necessarily say. I am convinced that if we are going to stand by the Gospel and use it to defend and understand our faith, we better know what it says and even more, what it doesn’t say. We need to avoid creating our own super Gospel by taking all four Gospels and turning them into something we think it says or something we think it should say. That can be a very dangerous form of Christianity. The Gospel writers are trying to convince you of some truth about Jesus. They are not as interested in provable facts, history or chronology as we wish they were. Where we might feel these things are important and vital, to them, they are not. As we know, faith is not so much a science or a description as it is a belief and a passion. When we allow the Gospel writers to tell us their own truth about Jesus in their way, the more inspired we can see that they are.
