The Drews and Neubauer Invitational XC Times Editorial Board

Preview The Drews/Neubauer is an annual cross country meet in honor of Jim Drews and Tori Neubauer, former UWL AllAmericas and National Champions. This meet features some of the best D3, NAIA, Junior College and a couple of D1 teams in the Midwest. This will be the biggest test yet for both the Storm Men and women. The Women’s Race After a disappointing and muddy race at Wartburg, the Storm Women are hungry to get after it today! They have a lot to prove to the conference and their fans. Totally healthy, the women will come to the line with no restrictions. We run by committee today with the only instruction: get out well, get to the mile reasonably and then somebody GO!

Men’s Race After our two best of weeks of training to date, our men are excited for the chance to compete once again. We are always thrilled to be back at this meet to see how we stack up against a very talented field. With just two weeks till the conference meet, I'm excited to see all of the hard work have men have put in since track season ended last fall. As we inch closer to the end of our season, I always start to value the time spent with our seniors. This year's class has been remarkable to work with these past four years. Jonathan Facio, Josh Paulson, Luke Evans, Levi Lefebure, and Tyler Combs are excited to carry us these last few weeks. As the leaves begin to turn colors and the weather begins to cool it means it's time for big races to be run. I can't wait to watch our men at 11:00 today as they look to finish this season off with a bang.

In the Chute By Jamie Glanz

If you would have told little fifth or sixth grade Jamie that she would be running cross country in college, I never would have believed you then. I never was much of a runner growing up, and even in high school, I didn’t see the appeal in it. Although I had the opportunity to run in 7th and 8th grade, I didn’t go out for cross until freshman year, but only because I didn’t want to do volleyball. Even then, I wasn’t sure if I would stick it out for the season, let alone all four years of high school. But every year, when fall came around, I couldn’t find it in me to say no to my coaches, friends, and family, all who had supported me tremendously in the sport. If it wasn’t for them, I’m positive I never would have stuck it out. After senior year though, I hung up my distance shoes, and thought I was done with long distance running for sure. Even though it wasn’t my favorite sport in the world, I had put in four years of hard training, and made some great memories, so I was still sad for it to be done. Little did I know that it wouldn’t be long before I broke out the running shoes again for another season of cross. Freshman year at Simpson I decided to just run track, and while I regret not doing cross that year, I never would have come to the realization that this sport means more to me than I ever gave it credit for. I remember during fall strength and conditioning practices that year with the sprinters, I’d always see the cross runners at the beginning or end of their practices and found myself truly missing it. That’s when I decided I wasn’t ready to give it up quite yet, and talked to Heath about joining the team for next fall. This was easily the best decision I ever made in college for multiple reasons. Not only have I seen so much improvement in myself as a runner from high school to now, but I’ve also learned how much I enjoy it as well. Most importantly though, this team has introduced me to my best friends at college. They quickly became my family and support system, and I have no idea how I would get through college without them. My cross country experience hasn’t been a smooth ride, but it’s definitely been worth it and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
