It is with utmost excitement that we welcome your consideration to our 6th Annual Bull Sale. As expected, we have been working hard over the past twenty some months to assemble this offering of exciting Red Angus bulls, and we are truly thankful for the interest you have in our cattle and program. Over the last few years, we have been very fortunate, delivering bulls all over North America; from Canada to Mexico, Montana to Florida. The feedback has been positive and encouraging, and we can’t wait to get this year’s offering out and proving themselves as well.

The genetics represented this year are among the breeds’ finest; some you’re undoubtedly familiar with, and some you’ve probably never heard of. Breed improvement is altogether our foremost objective. There are certain Red Angus breeders that are so evidently defined in the kind, pedigrees, and EPDs that make them, them. We certainly respect that. All too often though, you’ll find breeders that become inherently narrow-minded, chasing the certain trends or traits that they feel have the biggest impact on their own, personal bottom-line. However, we’re keeping an open mind to different lines of genetics, ultimately to breed the kind of Red Angus cattle that are the most problem-free, low-maintenance, and profitable for the commercial cow-calf producer. If we’re being honest with ourselves, the selection of purebred bulls around the United States is vast, overly saturated, and mind-boggling. Every publication, newspaper, or scroll through social media leaves you inundated with bulls for sale. With that recognized, it leaves us with the question, “Why buy our bulls?” Ultimately, you need a bull that is suited for your environment, and gets your cows settled. Fertility and libido are mandatory. Secondly, who desires to invest in a bull that breaks down structurally within the first year? Sadly, it happens more often than not, and we feel certain breeders almost enjoy the idea of preconditioning a customer to believe they need to come by a new bull every single year. With these two most basic criteria for bull selection identified, you are guaranteed to meet both here at Niobrara Red Angus. Red Angus cattle are our passion. We have challenged ourselves to breed and raise the most complete, profit-driving Red Angus cattle in the breed. Are EPDs solely how we improve our next calf crop? No. Are we aiming to disregard all of that, improving the cattle exclusively by what we see visually? No. Our goal is to focus on breed improvement by utilizing everything possible, while sticking to what we feel are the commercial cattlemen’s most basic requirements: fertility, longevity, and profitability.

The Team

JEFF & TAMI KELLER, OWNERS of Niobrara Red Angus, grew up in Niobrara, Nebraska. In their years around home, they grew up on Tami’s family’s cattle ranch, Leader Angus Farm, helping to complete the day to day of ranch responsibilities. Years later, after college and law school and establishing residence in Lincoln, NE, the Keller’s knew they wanted a connection back to their roots; also wanting their three boys Sam, Jack and Ben to have a chance to be involved in agriculture. Thus, Niobrara Red Angus was established. Although they are not on-farm most business days, the effort and team they have developed, they feel is second to none.

JACOB BATHKE, RANCH MANAGER, resides and oversees Niobrara Red Angus each day. Born and raised in Niobrara, he is the fourth generation to graduate from Niobrara High. He manages and oversees the daily operations of the ranch, and is responsible for their wellbeing. He says he owes most of his cattle knowledge to Kent Snowdon, who got him started in the cattle industry about 15 years ago. Jacob graduated from Northeast Community College with an Associates Degree in Agronomy. He’s grateful for the opportunity to work for the Keller Family, and to be able to work with such high quality seedstock. He would also like to acknowledge and thank his brother Shane, and other friends and family that help him time to time throughout the year.

MEG PENROD, OFFICE MANAGER, resides in Lincoln Nebraska with her husband Tanner, daughter Sloan, and their extra large sweet golden doodle Foster. Meg received her BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she spent most of her time throwing pottery. She can often be found drawing, painting or creating some work of art in the middle of the night. She spent the last 12 years working in interior design but her love for people and animals is what drew her to work for Niobrara Red Angus.

GARRETT KNEBEL, MARKETING MANAGER, resides in Bozeman, MT with his wife Katelyn. There they own and operate Storey Hereford Ranch & Harmony Hill, a progressive Hereford & Red Angus operation focused on seedstock for the commercial cow-calf operator. With a degree from Oklahoma State University, Garrett’s main responsibilities for Niobrara Red Angus include marketing, consulting, breeding, and seedstock selection. In his spare time, he travels the country visiting with fellow Red Angus breeders and judging livestock shows.

Tired of fat, lazy bulls that were pushed to their structural limits in development? We are too! These bulls were developed at home, on the ranch in Niobrara, NE. Added fat in a bull’s scrotum only prolongs their ability to regulate temperature for proper semen production. Feel confident these bulls will be genuine in their condition and shape and ready to work!

NEW THIS YEAR - INSURANCE/FIRST BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE

Please reference the Martin Trudeau Insurance insert, outlining the Livestock Insurance options available for purchase on sale day.

All bulls will have passed a breeding soundness exam, prior to sale day. New This Year, we will offer to share the insurance premium to purchase Bull Mortality & ASD Infertility insurance through Martin Trudeau Insurance of Mitchell, SD. The seller will pay the first 5% of the purchase price of the insurance premium on whichever policy the buyer wishes to receive. A representative of Martin Trudeau will be available sale day. If the buyer declines this coverage, he/she assumes full risk for the bull. We would suggest that normal care still needs to be exercised toward these animals and particularly yearling bulls to maintain adequate body condition.

Deliveries to U.S. destinations will begin after the sale at our earliest convenience.

Pricing will be charged based on your physical address. All deliveries will be organized to central points within the state. Delivery will NOT be organized to your home or ranch. You are expected to meet the NIO truck driver at the central drop-off point as communicated by them.

International purchases are sold FOB Niobrara Red Angus. We will assist to complete testing and arrange for shipping. But all costs incurred to import/export as well as freight shall be the responsibility of the buyer. Please call for details.

If you are not ready to receive your animals when we plan to deliver to your area, or it is after April 1st, feeding arrangements are available for a charge of $3.50 per day, per animal. Please coordinate these feeding arrangements after the sale.

We will be offering a $100 per head Rebate for customers who arrange to pick up their bulls at the Ranch within one week of the sale.

RETAINED INTEREST

We are retaining ½ interest in all bulls in the sale. We are selling the remaining ½ interest, full possession, and full salvage value. At the time of purchase, the highest bidder on a retained interest bull may elect to purchase exclusive semen rights. If a buyer elects to purchase exclusive semen rights, Niobrara Red Angus’ interest becomes in herd use only and Niobrara Red Angus retains their rights to use the bull within their herd.

UPDATED SUPPLEMENT INFORMATION

Supplement sheets will be available on sale day and will include actual scrotal measurements, actual weights, and updated EPDs. All yearling bulls will be ultrasounded and updated carcass EPD information will be available.

Philosophy Vision AND

In the simplest of description, our long-term goal is to bridge the divide in the Red Angus breed between correctly structured “phenotype” cattle with a disadvantage in the availability of genetic data and information, with the typical, number-chasing U.S. Red Angus cow; genetic history and contemporaries of plenty, with a compromised foot structure that has simply been overlooked for far too many years.

In our extensive travels, we have seen herds of all different shapes and sizes, priorities and unimportance’s, trends and age-old beliefs. Many, not all, of the cattle that appear to be the most elite in the Red Angus database, are in actuality some of the poorest footed, worst structured cattle in the breed that have compromised longevity. We are led to believe it’s because decisions have been made in a swivel chair, and not in the middle of their cowherd. Breeders that have mated cows based on the Planned Mating calculator on the Red Angus website have looked past the visual appraisals that HAVE to take place. Top 1% doesn’t mean guaranteed to breed for 5 years. More times than not, their feet are genetically debilitating and you find them shuffling in when the cow herd is gathered in the fall because their toes have grown crossed and they’re in pain.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve found cattle that prove their longevity. Feet are not trimmed, cows live through their entire productive life and actually make you a greater return on that initial investment. BUT, if you were to look at their EPDs on paper, you may find yourself saying, “Why would I breed to this cow-killing, nanny-goat performing creature with the marbling of a Belgian Blue?” In reality, these cattle calve, perform, and grade equal to or even better than the data-focused cattle that clearly display a strong advantage in their genetic profile. Our thought is, why would I buy a bull perceived to be in the Top 1% for the Herdbuilder Index, when his toes are mal-shaped and I’m going to have to worry about him breeding enough cows to keep me in business?!

In closing, our goal is the crossover of these distinct sectors of the breed. Our cattle may never be Top 1% for a certain trait, but if they prove to have longevity and sire calves that guarantee the buyer gets a solid return on his investment, then that’s when we know we are headed down the correct path. We are following that path now; identifying and utilizing certain bulls or cows that we know provide enough problem-free longevity and profitability for a solid ROI. However, it takes time; lots of time to identify those individuals. And it’s our goal here at Niobrara Red Angus to be able to offer that kind to you.

Cattle producers sell their feeder and slaughter cattle based on what they actually weigh on a scale. When investing in seedstock, it is important to be provided with actual performance data rather than only computer generated projections that change weekly, can fluctuate dramatically and are only as relevant as the accuracy values behind them. EPDs are a selection tool but alone do not create great cattle; real breeding progress requires breeding beyond the numbers for real-world production traits. Selections and matings based on feet, udders, fertility and pounds; that has created consistency, progress, and lessened the cost of mistakes.

The RAAA Database may have identified his genetic potential to be among the breed’s best in weaning and yearling performance, proportionately adjusting up his BW EPD. But make no mistake, Reputation’s exceptional calving ease is Inherited, Proven, and Problem Free. This is as Curve-Bending a bull as I’ve ever witnessed. – Garrett Knebel

REPUTATION the most anticipated SIRE GROUP of 2023

Two years in, and I couldn’t possibly be more thankful and excited to be a partner with Overmiller Red Angus & Feddes/C-T on what I consider to be the most highly anticipated, and most widely appreciated Red Angus bull in recent years. Most know, our catalog or supplement sheet is folded up in our pocket when we start searching through an offering of bulls. I still have videos on my phone, the day 0094 came into view within his contemporaries. Unusually dark hided for a Red Angus bull, he was ripped up with a muscular outline, and a crest and presence that I associate with the most masculine, fertile kind. Upon closer study, his feet were truly immaculate. He reached off both ends with incredible athleticism, coming and going with an honest, opened-up width and density. As I turned to the paper to understand what I was looking at, I was elated that the bull read as a leader in his figures as well. A Red Rock son, known for calving ease, he also charted into the top percentiles for performance and growth. Balanced in his carcass figures, and then recognizing the immortal C-T Linsey 0964 was his grandmother, this was the bull I had been searching for all spring. Fast forward to the summer of 2022, I stopped into Kelly & Brent Overmiller’s to see how he had matured. I once again took a photo of how unbelievably good his feet had stayed and got even more excited about what we had found. Calving our bred heifers serviced by him, I got reports of phenomenal calving ease and a problem free, positive experience for the females. Jake has been extremely complimentary of the sire group all this past summer long, and once I was able to evaluate his sons this winter, I can confirm, this is truly a bull that checks all of the boxes. Semen has been kept exclusive between his owners, and only once were three units offered as a donation to the Bet on Red in Reno, Nevada, garnering $1,120.00 per unit. We will continue to keep C-T Reputation 0094 closed to semen sales for the time being, until our firms are content with the progeny retained in herd. Here in lies the first offering of his sons, and I’m confident we are witnessing the beginning of a bull that will have a longstanding impact on the Red Angus breed in its entirety.

Stunning to evaluate phenotypically, he is a stout, ripped up, long bodied, powerful rascal with a ton of presence. Extremely athletic and solid in his foot, he reads with tremendous longevity and heavy use. Top 1% WW with an Adjusted WW of 786 lbs., Top 1% YW with an Adjusted YW of 1,370 lbs., and the 2nd Highest ADG in the entire offering, here’s a calving ease option that will, without a doubt, add a substantial amount of weight into anyone’s calf crop. One of my favorites, this Reputation son is as big-middled, massive and three dimensional as any of his brothers on offer. Extremely sound and relaxed in his skeleton, this bull is built to last. Backed by a Darkhorse first calf heifer, we are extremely proud of our Darkhorse daughters in production. They’re arguably as versatile in their phenotype and genotype as anything we own, and always wean off big calves. With an Adjusted WW of 799 lbs., this was the heaviest Reputation son at weaning, and still hits the Top 10 Adj. YW bulls with 1,248 lbs. We tried as hard as we could through the 30 mph winds to get everything pictured, but this stud didn’t make it through the pen in time. That said, I went back to find him, and he’s definitely one of my favorites in the Reputation sire group. Another stunning calving ease bull that reads true though his head, neck, and shoulder, 2028 needs found on sale day; he just may be your favorite of the entire set. Backed by a gorgeous Dominion daughter, this bull also had a phenomenal day during scans with a 124 IMF Ratio, combining that with his already Top 10% REA EPD. A sleep-all-night heifer bull that still charts in the Top 10% for WW, YW, & REA, 2015 carries the look of a true calving ease bull. Honestly, I’ve never seen a Red Angus bull maintain this much mass, dimension, capacity, and muscle the whole way through. BIRTH WEIGHT AND CALVING EASE

University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions:

1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.

2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf, have 35-40% influence on calving ease.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what is thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65-70 mph, and what is thought to be 70-80 lbs, may actually be 80-90 lbs. Remember, if everything is relevant, increased growth, frame and performance will increase birth weight. A longer-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1,200-1,250 lbs. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus, a 1,200 pound cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature size and performance of your cattle.

Maybe one of the stoutest, most performance driven Bucket List sons we’ve ever produced, from a top end John Wick x 13X first calf heifer. One of my favorites in the entire sale, this son of Crump Sabotage 0771 is a dark red, stout bodied, high-capacity future range bull that checks a lot of boxes. Phenotypically one of the most complete bulls in the offering, he also had a great scan day, making the Top 10 Ratios for both IMF & REA.

We start off the Fall Born bulls with a standout that’s been catching our attention from early days. This son of Red Eagle is an extremely stout made, big ribbed, dark red bull that is phenotypically as good as they get. Very sound and athletic on his feet and legs, he also displays a stout, masculine head shape with added masculinity through his crest. Huge topped, big hipped, he carries that width and power all the way to the ground. All that power and stoutness makes sense, as he’s a son from a young Firestorm x Baneberry daughter. After all of these years, the Baneberry daughters continue to knock it out of the park.

Another knockout, dark red son of Red Eagle lies here in Lot 59. Long bodied, extended, big middled and powerfully constructed, he’s got honest muscle shape about everywhere you look. Our Reckoning daughters are among the best cows in our herd, and his mother added her additional power into this fall bull as well. With a birthweight of 81 pounds, his BW Ratio indicates he offer as much calving ease as any in the fall born bulls. Scanning the biggest REA of his contemporaries, he’ll certainly add the power into a set of feeder calves. Let’s not forget, the added age these 18 month old bulls have will only help in the ‘settling cows’ department.

The Fall Born Bulls

The first of two sons of Township 17G, we’re extra familiar with the Resource sons and daughters from U2 Beauty 113Z. Here’s a burly, stout, bold, ripped up rascal with a stunning head and neck carriage. With Reckoning on the bottom side here as well, you can expect breed-leading foot shape and udder structure in his daughters that should lead your herd forward in a positive direction.

Long bodied, neat and extended about his head and neck, lots of muscle shape and a big rib cage. 1246 is the product of a Full Sister in blood to KJL/CLZB Complete 7000E, one of the more sampled sire groups available for sale this spring in 2023. She added some extra yearling performance, declaring this Township son in the Top 10% of the breed for YW. Be advised, he did meet the picture pen with a little more excitement.

A few years ago, I set out to find a black angus bull that would truly elevate our programs forward. I stumbled upon the 2018 $200,000 High Selling Bull from the Conneally Angus program, Conneally Fortune 752L. A true outlier in terms of his performance and carcass merit, he offered an incredible genetic profile and appeared to be a very functional, muscular bull that was practical in his look. One of the most versatile donor cows Niobrara Red Angus has ever acquired is VF Lakota C302. Not only was her genetic profile atop the breed, but she was probably the most phenotypically impressive, fault free Red Angus female I had seen thus far with EPDs that placed her among the breed’s best. Fast forward a couple years, and here we sit with two full brothers that I personally feel will elevate the Red Angus breed to new heights. Their genetic profiles, coupled with the bulletproof cow family behind the C302 cow, make them as exciting as any Black, Red Carriers I’ve witnessed in recent time. Way up in the Top 1% of the breed, we’re Top 1% ProS, GM, WW, & YW. Top 2% REA, and Top 10% REA. What’s exciting is that these bulls performed phenotypically like they read on paper. With ratios at the top of this entire offering, the proof is there.

Huge bodied, as stout, opened-up and as powerful as any bull in the offering. He displays 2085Z’s structural quality and looks like a true herd bull in the making.

You talk about mass, dimension, capacity and power, this may be the most impressive bull from that standpoint as any in the sale. 465A is the most phenotypically stunning and elite Red Angus female I’ve ever been around; a large-scaled cow with immaculate foot shape, tons, and tons of dimension and yet still attractive and maternal in her lines. There is a tremendous opportunity here in these America sons to infuse SAV America 8018 into the red breed, backed by some of the most phenotypically correct cows the Red Angus breed has to offer.
