ww.castlerockmarketing.com Welcome to the Pride of the Praries, 2020 version and we have an exciting, yet unique lineup in store for you this year. Red Angus genetics have been in hot demand this fall with sales being brisk on the good quality cattle. Headlining the WRAZ offering this year is the complete dispersal of his Black / Red carriers that he’s been working on over the last number of years. Outcross genetics are always in demand providing fresh genetics for the gene pool let alone some very exciting matings that the homework already puts you ahead of the game. Phil is quite meticulous in the genetics he has attained over the year besides the fact it was about the outcome being more then just outcross genetics, rather genetics that will be a positive influence to the breed. Take some time and inspect the pedigrees they are unique! Kenray has assembled a very strong lineup of breds this year as their contribution to the POP sale and what a set they are. Staunch, Endorse, Titanium and Solider all have some daughters in this Red Angus event that have the potential for ROI that is favorable to the buyer as was visible as an in dam coupon from this sale a few years back put Fraser Farms in the black with their purchase from Kenray. Hard working people with hard working cattle pretty much sums what you can expect from Kenray, customer satisfaction is a must. Big bodied, sound footed, sensibly managed cattle put things into context when speaking of these bred heifers, they’re bred to produce. We encourage you to either stop in at Wraz and Kenray or stop in at SLS to view the cattle prior to sale day at your leisure where you can visit with Phil and Sheldon on the cattle while putting things into perspective with the cattle. Videos will be online December 1st for your viewing pleasure. Should you have any questions regarding this outstanding offering feel welcome to give any of us a call at Castlerock Marketing. See you sale day!
See you sale day!

Welcome to our 5th Annual Pride of the Prairies Event. If you are reading this I thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule. I would also like to encourage you to have a look at the offering from our good friends and partners in this annual event. Sheldon, Ella, Oliver, Ray and Donelda of Kenray Ranch are great partners in this sale and we are happy to work with them once again. Both outfits are like minded on customer satisfaction and we want to be the first to know if you ever have an issue. They are cattle and although we try to do our very best there will always be an unexpected issue or two. We stand firmly behind our genetics and will help you out if at all possible. We do our best to keep in touch but as everyone’s life seems to keep getting busier if we have missed following up with you just pick up the phone and communicate with us – we look forward to your calls! Well another year has come and gone and as I reflect on the past year it was definitely a challenge in terms of moisture in many parts of the country. I hope as you are reading this you have been fortunate enough to get ample feed supplies for the next six months as Mother Nature turns our landscape white. We were blessed with enough feed in our area but as the year progressed surface water became scarce. We got by although some of our fall grazing was underutilized because of the lack of surface water. Cowmen and women are a resilient group though and we always try to turn a negative into a positive so we used the dry dugouts as an opportunity to clean out those dugouts that had been sluffed in over the past few years. Now the new goal is to develop water stations beside those dugouts and keep the cattle out of them so that we do our little part for the riparian areas as well as maintain a better more consistant water supply. We are fortunate in Sask at this time that there are programs to help with water development – Thanks to the Watershed and Government entities for these programs and to the producer led entities like SCA, SSGA, CCA, BCRC that do all the legwork in the background with their lobbying efforts and research to get these programs in place and keep the government and really the rest of the world up to date and interested in the best and most environmentally responsible beef in the world! If you have never taken the time to have a look at what BCRC is doing and the wealth of information they have for producers to access then its time you had a look at their website. This year our WRAZ offering is a little different than in the past. There is a small group of red bred heifers right from the top of our program on offer for your evaluation but the bulk of the offering is black. We have decided to disperse all of our Blacks. The decision to do this was not an easy one as it requires a lot of time, energy and $$$ to do what I felt was the right way to develop a Black red carrier program. I am very pleased to share a group of Black hided females with you that has been a program of its own at WRAZ and I feel will be a very good investment for their new owners. I started out close to 10 years ago buying what I felt were black hided breeding pieces that were proven pedigreed, good footed, good uddered and structurally correct to be the foundation for building red outcross cattle with strong pedigrees. With the help of some of my good friends and neighbors in the business of breeding Blacks and Reds as well as the sales managers such as Shane Castle and Chris Poley I feel we have gathered a fairly unique group of very worthy black hided breeding pieces. The majority are Black Red Gene Carrier females but there is also a small group of straight black females and some of the straight blacks are bred straight black as well. I have done my best to make that clear and highlighted in the footnotes – hopefully I did a good job and that helps clarify them in the offering. Call anytime if you are unsure. Most of the work is done on these females and only the very best that have surpassed the test of time are in the pages of this book so buy with confidence. There has been a tremendous amount of time and $$$$$ spent to get this group of females to this point. There is lots of opportunity left here in this group of females and I know they will go on to work very well for their new owners. I believe they are all pretty royally bred and some of you will end up with red progeny next spring that will be extremely marketable. Those of you that recognize what it takes to get these females to this point and take them home to your programs will fast forward and very quickly realize a fantastic return on your investment. I am very confident in this group on offer and wish you all the best with your investments!! Thanks again for taking the time to look through the book and we hope to see you there on sale day and hopefully the days before to enjoy the hospitality we very much enjoy offering and being a part of. The TOC is Friday night and there will be a room at the hotel to enjoy the hospitality in whatever way we are allowed to. Every day in this crazy world is unknown so if you are unable to or cannot attend personally at SLS then the next best is to be online with DLMS so get signed up ahead of time and enjoy the day with us. Take care out there! See you soon, Phil A NOTE ABOUT WRAZ NUTRITION AND VACCINATION PROGRAM. WRAZ livestock have been fed responsibly with a year round mineral program. These cattle were on pasture as long as possible then when supplemental feed is delivered the rations are balanced by a professional nutritionist to ensure all their required nutritional needs have been met. WRAZ has a veterinary client relationship with Dr. Henry McCarthy of Wawota Vet Service with a whole herd vaccination program as recommended by Dr. McCarthy. We follow the Bovigold Modified live vaccination protocol including Bovigold FP to ensure fetal protection. The bred female herd is also vaccinated annually with Scour Vac. The preg checking was done by Dr. Henry McCarthy as well.

Here is a bull that has really caught fire the last 2 years. Next Step started out as the $9500 USD bull at Westphall’s in Montana. Brylor Ranch purchased him and bred everything they could to him for 2 solid years. His sons have been very popular in Bryan & Sherry’s fall bull sale with their really good southern AB commercial bull sale customers. Now they have many, many daughters retained so I jumped at the chance when this powerful herd bull was offered to me. I have been very impressed with his outcross progeny’s exceptional feet and his ability to pass on his amazing hair coat to his calves!! His first daughters at Brylor Ranch have gorgeous udders and weaned off really big solid calves on their first try! We donated a daughter of Next Step to the foundation Red Angus herd at Olds College. Rumour has it she was the highest evaluated heifer in the group of ten by a very qualified panel of astute cattlemen. In the Brylor Ranch TWAV sale this fall a May born bred heifer sold for $ 10000. Check out his awesome RAAA EPD’s! His CAA ones are pretty darn good too if you are from Canada. This is the only semen selling on Next Step for the upcoming breeding season in Canada. Owned with Brylor Ranch

I cannot wait until there are females milking on this very complete young sire. Clipper is the $ 10000 half interest son of Assassin from our 2020 sale. We own him with Dennis Mauthe. His dam Sheba 40X sold for $ 10000 at Red Round Up to Mark Chriss – On the Mark Cattle Co in Oregon. Now I hear she will soon be in the ET program as a donor. He is a service sire for a number of the bred heifers.

I have really high expectations for this very eye appealing young son of Kargo. This guy had well above average testicle size and great shape as well. I just love his front end and how he carries it up into his calving ease head. His dam is from the highly regarded Miss Deal cow family with awesome production. Great grand dam is CAA Premier dam and if you go a little further back you will find a very good female I purchased from Riverdale at their dispersal. Service sire for a number of the bred hiefers.

This young sire I believe has a very bright future. He has a very interesting outcross pedigree with a very strong influence of the famed Tibbie cow family throughout. This unique sire is the result of exactly what our black dispersal females are all about – they are almost all one step away from the final product in progeny like this with a heavy coat of red hair!

Gerry and I had been hunting for a Black red carrier son of Xcalibur for a couple of years when Gerry spotted this guy in Hamco’s sale catalogue. He is straight black not a red carrier but we could not resist the opportunity once we learned his dam was in the ET program as a donor. The crew at Hamco had picked her out of the of the Prairielane dispersal for their donor program. There are 3 generations of Elite dam on the bottom side and numerous other donor females throughout his pedigree. Look at the growth numbers this bad boy possesses. I really look forward to seeing his females in production.
4
RRAR 5D This Black red carrier is a total outcross to most if not all red herds. He has tremendous calving ease yet very good growth in his progeny. He has done a very nice job for both WRAZ and CAMO. His females are just nicely in production and they are looking very good. His low birthweight carries through to his true calving ease sons. I liked him so much that when his dam came up for sale I partnered up with Jeff Fraser to own her. Since we are dispersing all the blacks you will find her for sale as lot 4 in this catalogue.

CWJ 624D Assassin took the breed by storm in 2017 as one of the most highly talked about Red Angus bulls that spring. With the dust settling Brylor purchased Assassin and the phone started to ring from people wanting semen packages. With extremely heavy use over the past 4 breeding seasons it is clear that the power and style that Assassin injects into his progeny is evident. There was some very stiff competition at RRUP this fall for the top Assassin female. The bold spring of rib, wide in their hooks to pins you couldn’t help but be impressed with his work. Our lead off high selling bull this spring was an Assassin son and we could not be more thrilled to have had the opportunity to have Assassin roam our pastures at Wawota much less be an owner! Assassin semen is very much in demand with the first 1/3 of what is available this fall selling for $235 average at the TWAV.

Eye appeal goes a long way when you walk into a new herd or a group of calves come into the ring at the auction barn. This one is a beauty! She is from the same cow family as the Legend 83G service so it is not hard to understand where his eye appeal comes from. We had the good fortune to own another Red female 439M in this same cow family from the Riverdale dispersal a while back. She was a dandy as well. Long story short I really like this one! I believe the mating to Assassin will produce a bell ringer. Just get her bought!

Blackwillow 12A has recently made the CAA elite dam list for her outstanding production. Take note that she is bred red this year! Lot 5 Blackwillow 1H has been on my radar screen since birth. She is straight black beauty that has had the look since she took her first breath. If you want a powerful female have a close look here. She was one of Lee & Dawn Wilson’s recommendations from the Glesbar dispersal. She has done a nice job here and you can see by her March 19 born heifer by Next Step as well as her Bred heifer by Final Deal’s big brother what potential she has. Her dam is unique as an Ee as well as designated CAA Elite. I would suggest there is a real nice cow family opportunity here!

These Next Step progeny have more hair than any other sire I have used to date. A great deal of the work to turning this one red is done with a very interesting pedigree to move on with. You know the cow family works and now add in a total outcross in Next Step. I am not big on the new number system but it is hard not to notice the growth numbers here are very desirable.

Here is one of the great foundation black red carrier females purchased from JJL Livestock. No regrets there folks Jarret and Jenna and family do a really nice job breeding cattle. The opportunity before you on these proven Black RC females is very similar to the package I bought from JJL a lot of the work is done. I realize she is not young but there is a well proven cow family here! You only need one female out of her and she is more than paid for (or just imagine a red bull!!). Sweep the ring on the works of them and you won’t be disappointed. She aint as good as she once was but she’s as good once as she ever was!!! She is bred the same way as her daughter 176H for another unique pedigree. The law of averages is weighted toward the next great herd bull!!

This Mati cow family was my personal favorite from JJL (Dam Black Cherry 41Y is a Mati). These Mati females have some substance to them. When you build a house the foundation is the most important step when you start to buid - if you are going to use a black RC to build some reds the foundation is no different. Mati’s would make a great foundation. Her red heifer will not be selling but the inset pic is an indicator of the Next Step mating. P.E to Next Step 554C May 11, 2020. Dam DKF Miss Right Time 122W (Freyja family) was purchased from DKF out of the Touch of Class sale for her interesting pedigree and sound structure as a strong base to make reds. She is still in the herd but her age held her from making the trip to Saskatoon for this sale. The strength of the Freyja cow family is apparent and you will find two more daughters of 5C in this sale. Expect the females in this cow family to be moderate but heavyweights that flesh easily. Once again a member of the strong Freyja cow family along with 5C, 163G, 52H in this sale and back to the 122W Right Time female we purchased out of the TOC sale. When you make the breeding decision to create outcross pedigrees from the dark side it is wise to start with well proven lines so the end result is very desirable and the time spent was worth it! I purchased her sire Millenium for $26000 from McMillen Ranching a few years back and we used him primarily on heifers but in hind sight he should have bred more cows. The females are real nice uddered and excellent mothers. I will add that they are generally very motherly so don’t expect her to be a kitten when she calves. This one has plenty of eye appeal in person. I have a few of these 0102 daughters and I do like them quite a bit just look at her udder. Once again she has had 2 male calves the first was red and only reason he didn’t make the bull sale as a heifer bull was his young age. She then fell through the cracks because of when she calved to go out with the bull later on year 2. We realized what a mistake that was and she went back in to the early group this year and her fertility is obvious as she has caught right back up to the early calving group this year. Here is a true breeding piece for the Red folks. Thank you Shane Castle for finding this one – she is a good one with a very unique pedigree. Her dam 93D was slated to be in the pages of this offering with her but unfortunately she slipped and broke her leg at preg check time. Sherman tank would be an understatement to explain her dam. If you are a Kodiak fan like I am this one may be for you. I bought her from Blair Ag for the Black red carrier program knowing what the Kodiak females can do. She has a black red carrier heifer bull by Tommy Jack in the bull pen this year as well as another daughter and granddaughter in the pages of this offering. The mating this year will be one I would have liked to see. She is overdue to lay down and have a red one too! P.E to Assassin from May 14, 2020. Preg check Oct 9 to be 2 months along. This indicates a late April calf but I would suggest to keep an eye on her one cycle before that.

If you are looking for a little more unique pedigree have a look here. 170E was the in dam mating when I bought dam 325C. This is what you can expect out of this cow family. She has done a great job on her steer this year weaning off at 822 lbs. (Remember I keep very few black hided bulls so don’t hold the steer against her). You will also find a very attractive daughter by our Final Deal son. She was mated to an up and coming son of Ghostrider this year that I think a lot of. Hopefully she lays down and gives you a red one! P.E to Red Stuart Ghost 64G from May 5, 2020. Preg checked Oct 9 to be 5 months along. Expect a late Jan to early Feb calf.

This one is pretty easy to find in my opinion. You can read about the strong cow family in her dam and granddam’s footnote. Her sire is a son of Final Deal that is quietly doing a fabulous job most notably on his females. There is a cow family opportunity here to save you a few years in the process of turning good blacks red. The mating will make for a very cool pedigree.

Her straight black dam Black Lucy 26C was purchased from the Keystone Klassic sale in Brandon MB. Jeff Legaarden spoke very highly of the Black Lucy cow family as a foundation female for my black red carrier project. This one catches my eye every time. She is a tick more moderate than some of the other open heifers but get in behind her and take a close look at her. There might not be a more eye appealing heifer in the offering. Well proven very maternal genetics on the bottom and fresh new blood on top. Aviator was an ET calf at side of his recip dam in the Damar dispersal. I think this one would be hard to beat with a halter on if anyone has the desire.

One of the few Roulette 5D females in the offering. Roulette 5D is doing a very nice job at both WRAZ and for our good friends/partners at CAMO. Her dam is from the well proven Abigail cow family in our herd. I really like these 5D females so they are held pretty tight. This one is one of the few opportunities you will have to purchase one.

A pedigree loaded with calving ease. Her dam is one of the tightly held Roulette 5D females that has proven herself well on her first try. Just look at Roulette 5D’s dam 12A (lot 4) and picture what she has for maternal support. Her sire Big Rock 7D was highly underutilized Reserve Champion from Red Round Up. There was a few hiccups in his first year after RRUP – he was to be used in northern AB but that never did happen so it was too late to breed a group of any size. He was finally used heavily here and I was really happy with what we got. His sons in the bull pen look very interesting.

Lot 56 This one is the alternate choice bred heifer for Red Round Up and she could have easily been the pick. I really love this female and the only reason this opportunity is before you is the plan to flush her dam 72X. You may remember her dam from the Mulberry Mayhem a couple years back. She was the Mulberry from Blake’s and she could be the cover girl for the breed standing on as perfect of foot as I have seen as well as checking all the other boxes to be a great matron for the breed. She has now made the CAA Premier Dam list for her excellence in production. Her sire Overdrive was our high selling bull to Red Ember Ranch that we retained an interest in. What a job he did and of course only the good die young and he was injured so we had to very reluctantly had to put him down. We hold these females very close but we hold this sale to share good ones and here is one of the best! P.E to Red JJL Legend 83G from April 12, 2020. Preg check Aug 5 to be 3 months along. The Ramba cow family is one of the very sound cow families for Gerry & Glenda Walter – WCF Red Angus. There are a lot of very recognizable bulls that are known for their great maternal aspects. Welcome to this year’s edition of the Pride of the Prairies Female Sale. It would be a bold understatement to say that this year has provided anyone a clear 20/20 vision. One thing remains constant, our commitment to the improvement of our Red Angus herd and the willingness to share genetics from the top end of our breeding program with like minded breeders. We continue to strive to breed for a balance of traits using both the time tested and newly developed selection tools that are available. In our offering you will find females that are pleasing to look at while incorporating a balanced EPD profile. Service sire selection has been tediously planned as we source bulls that have proven calving ease yet possess added growth and muscle shape while not sacrificing maternal traits. We want to take this time to thank our previous supporters and everyone who has placed their confidence in our breeding program for the last 34 years. We believe our success is only as great as our customers success. Our greatest source of pride is seeing our customers and friends do well at the sale barn, breeding pasture or show ring with the genetics that they have purchased from us. The feedback we get from regular contact with our customers provides us direction and encouragement. We want to hear from you following our sales, don’t ever hesitate to drop us a line or drop by the ranch. Our 2020 offering has been called “your best set of heifers to date”, by countless visitors to the ranch. We will admit that we are very proud of this offering and that they need to be seen in person to fully appreciate the depth of quality in this offering. Whether you are searching for Red Angus genetics that will bolster your existing breeding program our you are laying the foundation to a new Red Angus herd we believe that there is something for everyone in this offering. Our herd is on a industry leading whole herd health program designed by the good folks at Head for the Hills Veterinary Service. In addition, the heifers have all been DNA tested and have an AngusGS profile with the Canadian Angus Association. We recognize that some of the AI and exposure dates are tight, as such we are offering to pay for any resulting DNA charges that may occur at the time of registering the calves from these mating’s. We encourage you to come tour through the sale heifers by prior to the sale either at the ranch before December 8th or at Saskatoon Livestock Sales starting December 10th. Cattle will pass through the sales ring on sale day with the option of live online bidding available on DLMS.ca. If you have any questions about this offering or the sales format this year please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help in making your selections as comfortable as possible. Should you need it, we will help organize transportation and facilitate any export testing required following the sale. We look forward to being your hosts and your visit on December 12th in Saskatoon.

Lot 65 When we talk about the impact of a cow family on our breeding program, we would be remiss to overlook the positive impact that the Rosa family is currently having at Kenray Ranch. We secured this family from the good folks at Kuntz Farms and have not looked back. Rosa 3A came as an in-dam purchase and has more than proven herself as a brood cow and then as a donor female. Previously she has raised Red Kenray Staunch 61D that we sold ½ interest to Windy Willow and in turn his genetics were highly sought out during their 2019 Red Dispersal Sale. You will find daughters and his service selling in this offering. We also elected to retain her 2019 born son Red Kenray Resource 50G for use in our breeding program. Resource 50G is a direct son of the wildly popular Resource 137E, watch for his progeny in the fall of 2021. As a donor Rosa 3A flushed very well and in 2020 we had seven direct daughters in our replacement female group. We are honored and excited to offer these two Endorse 20C daughters for your appraisal. The Endorse cattle are eye appealing and have been very well accepted by our commercial bull buyers. These heifers sell in their entirety with no strings attached. Both carry service to the calving ease Ferdinand 839F that we sourced this past spring from Wildman Livestock. His pedigree is loaded with breed legends and greats. These Staunch 61D daughters are proving their worth more and more everyday. As a group they are super easy keeping and continually catch your eye with their presence. Cattle born with moderate birth weight and added growth and extra dimension will always be in fashion. AI’ed to Red Corner Creek Reality 460 April 24. This cherry red heifer caught extra attention this summer on the Southeast Angus Tour. She is a striking member of the popular Ms Prince cow family. Her maternal grand dam is designated Elite by the Canadian Angus Association and has previously raised daughters that sold to the breeding programs of Windy Willows Farm and Hillcrest Colony through this sale. We have always been told to build our program around cow families and the rest will fall into place. Here is a very proven and solid opportunity! AI’ed to Red Corner Creek Reality 460 April 24. Favorite 32G is a dark red daughter of the Endorse bull that we exhibited at the NWSS with our friends from Triple L Red Angus. Endorse 20C is maternally backed by the proven Bayberry 704T cow that has a long production record of great ones. During the Crowfoot dispersal we took a shot at owning the Moonshine 8081U bull. Unfortunately, we came up one bid short, so we secured ourselves a bank of semen on him instead. The Moonshine cattle are easy keeping and flourish well under least cost grazing management systems. They are sound cattle with good feet and have extra depth of body. By mating 32G to Staunch 61D there will be some added frame and length of body while maintaining calving ease. Lana 144G caused a bit of debate on our social media stream this fall. We couldn’t decide which photo of her we should use in the catalog so we asked the people. It was determined that she took a good photo from any angle!! It is really no wonder as she traces back to the original Lana 60Y cow that had a picture perfect profile and produced progeny that sold at Red RoundUp, Angus Pride and to Australia during her production career. As we say cow families breed true and Lana 144G has the foundation behind her to be a cornerstone female for your breeding program. Lacey is somewhat of an unassuming daughter of Titanium 116D. These Endorse females will develop into good big solid cows that the cowboys will love. As an industry we are always in search of cattle with the ability to push the scales down in the fall. Reality is that you cannot consistently do that without having enough frame to carry the flesh.
