All I want for Christmas is .. By Dr Andrew Zuschmann

Having a baby is one of life’s most precious gifts, however welcoming a newborn into the family is not always straight-forward. One in every six Australian couples has difficulty falling pregnant. During the holiday season couples desperately seeking a baby are easily reminded of their heartache. It is time to shine a light on infertility. INFERTILITY IS DEFINED AS BEING UNABLE to conceive naturally after a period of 12 months. Around one-third of infertility problems are related to men and one-third of cases are related to women. The remaining third is a combination of fertility factors involving both partners and unknown causes. The good news is that advances in reproductive technology, including IVF treatment, provide a much higher chance of falling pregnant than natural conception. “For many couples IVF is the only way they will be able to have a baby, yet so many couples delay seeking medical advice,” said Miranda-based Fertility Specialist, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Andrew Zuschmann. “Don’t let your Christmas dream of having a baby become yet another unresolved New Year’s resolution. It’s a big step to seek help but it is the first step towards having a baby,” said Dr Zuschmann. Dr Zuschmann established his practice in the Sutherland Shire five years ago. He provides fertility services in association with Demeter Fertility. He knows all too well the struggle and frustration many local couples face in their pursuit to have a child of their own. Seeking help is a brave decision for couples. “Our job is to understand the needs and concerns of couples. We make their journey from conception to birth as respectful and successful as possible in a supportive and comfortable environment,” said Dr Zuschmann. “We combine both holistic and medical services to provide an individually tailored service. It includes counselling, education and exercise physiology. Recent research has shown that

It’s a big step to seek help but it is the first step towards having a baby,” said Dr Zuschmann. combination to be successful in keeping patients engaged in their IVF program,” said Dr Zuschmann. Over this holiday period alone nearly 200 babies will be born in the Sutherland Shire across Sutherland and Kareena Hospitals. “We all know Christmas is a busy period and for none more so than for the parents of a newborn,” said Dr Zuschmann. “It is safe to say they have welcomed the most precious Christmas gift and wouldn’t change a thing,” he said.

WHEN TO SEE A FERTILITY SPECIALIST You are under 35 and have been trying to conceive naturally for at least 12 months without success. You are over 35 and have been trying to conceive naturally for six months. You have a history of endometriosis, known or suspected tubal blockage, irregular periods or recurrent miscarriages. Your partner has an abnormal semen analysis or has had a vasectomy.

someone in the shire ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS TO GIVE TIME, JOY AND CARE TO A CHILD IN NEED... “Foster Care is a Positive Experience and Enriching for a Family” IN AN AGE WHERE WE CAN GET WHATEVER WE WANT at the click of a mouse, possessions often overtake the most beautiful thing about life. LOVE! Toward the end of the year when Christmas is looming and shopping lists are long, spare a thought for the less fortunate children without parents to provide safety, security and protection for them. This issue, Shine looks at Karen as ‘Someone in the Shire’ along with her husband and three boys. They have the most unique gift to celebrate this Christmas. It is a little girl just 6 days old when she was placed with their family. They became her temporary foster family and instantly fell in love with her. “I had the boys close together so having a large age gap to the new addition to our family has really brought us all together. My sons are really enjoying her. She is part of our family and no different to the other children.” said Karen. THERE ARE A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS FOR FOSTERING CHILDREN from short term/ temporary, respite, crisis care and permanent/long term care. Karen and her husband see this as a way of giving back to the community. “You don’t need a big house, just love. Who can’t love a baby?” said Karen. After completing the foster carer training course, Karen commented that this was a great experience. If you are considering fostering, you make your own decisions about how best to help. Becoming a short-term carer may still allow you to work. Karen manages her part-time career and 14

her husband’s shift work. Along with some financial assistance for initial setup and a fortnightly allowance, Anglicare is also great support for the whole family. A caseworker keeps in regular contact. Karen appreciated the interest Anglicare shows her and her family. “You never really feel you’re on your own. Anglicare calls weekly, sometimes just to chat and see how you’re going. Our family and friends have also been very supportive and generous. They have welcomed her into their lives. She has touched so many people. Having a foster baby is easy. It doesn’t take any special skills. All you have to do is LOVE her” said Karen. Karen was asked how she would cope after caring for a baby for six months and then having to say goodbye when the child moves on to her birth family or other long term carers? “As part of our nature we tend to guard ourselves from hurt but sometimes it is worth getting our hearts broken. We know we will heal and have contributed to her future“said Karen. “People often say she is lucky to have us; we believe we are lucky to have her. She has bought so much to us as a family; this experience has enriched us all. by Melisa George

The Essence

of a Real Christmas

“There is a mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most: HAPPINESS, FREEDOM and PEACE OF MIND are attained by giving them to someone else” Anonymous and Wise. IS THIS THE ESSENCE OF A REAL CHRISTMAS? The gifting of oneself with the intention of meeting another? In that meeting, how do you greet and treat that person? What graciousness can you muster to seed happiness, freedom and peace of mind for you both? For most, the main ‘event’ of Christmas is the ‘family gathering’. Underneath all the ‘wrappings’ of commercial anticipation, all most of us really want is an experience of togetherness and connectedness. Even if it is only for a few hours, they will remain firmly embedded memories to nurture a sense of belonging of who we all are.

Giving consideration to this much loved annual ritual, what is it that you will look forward to giving or experiencing? Is it a sense of belonging, togetherness, sharing, and kindness, and generosity, open and light heartedness? Remember: YOU are the biggest part in creating this for yourself and others. So in the words of songwriter Carole King: “Put a smile on your face and show the world all the love in your heart and people gonna treat you better. You gonna find, yes you will, that you’re beautiful as you feel ” Cheers, MERRY CHRISTMAS, BUON NATALE, Joyeux. with endota spa Gymea

endota spa Gymea has decided that it is not just their clients who should get to feel heavenly. From December the day spa - which opened in the stunningly renovated Tradies Club in Gymea in April this year - will let clients decide which local charity should receive a donation equal to 5% of their purchase. “Having a blissful organic facial, or a muscle-melting massage is the fast track to feeling amazing,” explains spa owner Megan Horsman. “But now our clients will leave the spa feeling relaxed, more confident…and warm and fuzzy as well!” The ‘Community Partnership’ program came about as a result of community events attended by Megan and her sister and business partner Kirsty Hambrook. Almost as soon as they opened their beautiful new nine room day spa, they were stepping out of it again to attend events all over the Sutherland Shire. endota Gymea therapists dressed in their recognisable green and white uniforms were on-hand to offer free massages to Relay for Life participants, 16

and collect gold coin donations for the Gymea Bay Public School. The spa has also donated dozens of spa packages as raffle prizes and auction items for charity golf days, trivia nights, ladies days and gala balls. “We’ve just loved being a part of these events, and seeing the awesome work community groups do within the Sutherland Shire,” says Megan. “It got us thinking about how we could do more, support more groups, and be involved on a regular basis.” From December, each time a client books a spa experience, buys some all-Australian, all-organic endota skincare, or purchases a gift voucher (Christmas is just around the corner….!) they simply nominate which of the 6 community organisations

SHINEMAGAZINE2012

Shine #32.indd 16

they would like to support. If the group or charity would like to receive the donation as a gift voucher, endota spa Gymea will double the donation. “All endota spas Australia-wide already contribute 1% of product sales to support Bush Heritage Australia - an organisation which purchases and protects ecologically valuable areas of Aussie bushland,” explains Megan. “This is our way of adding to that, and making sure our contributions are having an effect locally.” With Christmas on the horizon, endota Gymea’s new program makes giving even better. endota spa gift vouchers are valid at endota locations all over Australia; buy a voucher at endota Gymea to bliss-out your loved ones and help out your local community at the same time.

GIVING HOPE is just the beginning by Melisa George KIDS HOPE is a mentoring program that helps children. Through a partnership between Caringbah Baptist Church and Kurnell Primary School, KIDS HOPE mentors children in the areas of education, self confidence and wellbeing. For one hour each week, several caring adults from the church mentor one child each. This involves helping the child with homework, playing games, arts and crafts, or just spending time together. KIDS HOPE focuses on primary school children because they are most likely to benefit from a close relationship with an adult. This is when self-esteem and core values are learned, and critical academic skills are acquired. Jo Graham, relieving Principal of Kurnell Public School, has been quoted as saying "Kids Hope is an extremely valuable program, contributing to student's self esteem and wellbeing. I have watched students

grow in confidence and "blossom" both academically and emotionally. When discussing student progress with teachers, remarks such as 'more confident', 'willing to have a go' and 'improving' are often mentioned. As I watch the faces of students as they interact with their mentors I am proud we have Kids Hope at our school. I look forward to more mentors being willing to be trained so that we can 'make a difference' to more students lives. One little boy said to his mentor “Oh. Our time together went too short!!” KIDS HOPE develops genuine community involvement at a local level. It brings HOPE for a better future to our children. www.worldvision.com.au

Mums and Bubs

Ready to shape up again

MUMS & BUBS

CAN I EXERCISE IF I AM BREASTFEEDING?

Yes. Exercise after breastfeeding your baby.Your breasts won’t feel uncomfortably full and your baby will be more settled during “Me Time”. Your maternity bras won’t support you enough. I recommend a sports-bra and breast pads.

WHEN CAN I START? All mums can start PELVIC FLOOR and LOWER TUMMY exercises as soon as they feel ready. Start taking bub out for a walk in the fresh air. It will boost your mood. Trim and tone that baby belly by starting a regular program no sooner than 6-8 weeks after birth.

WILL I EVER LOSE THIS BABY BELLY? Yes. Don’t be too hard on yourself. This is a beautiful and challenging time for you, emotionally and physically. Appreciate and respect your body. Give it the care it deserves to heal. With a GOOD EATING plan and REGULAR exercise you CAN loose the weight you gained during pregnancy. Consistency is the key. Join a local Mums and Bubs group. It is a fabulous way to meet other mums and still be close to your little one. IS IT NORMAL IF I’m LEEKING WEE? Yes, this is common after the birth of your baby and can happen if you cough, laugh or sneeze. It will help if you work on strengthening your PELVIC FLOOR muscles with gentle daily exercises.

SPACE TO SIMPLY BE ...

IT IS THE STRANGEST THING. WE SPEND MOST OF OUR DAYS STRIVING TO ACHIEVE MORE, BE MORE AND HAVE MORE... and in the process of not slowing down we have less. We lose so much of ourselves. Our focus, our energy, our connection with others and what is most important to us. For me it’s when I make time for myself and create the space to do nothing. That is when I am content and feel I have achieved the most in that day; appreciating everything I already do have in my life. Another bonus for me is that when an unexpected challenge arises I am able to manage the situation better. It may simply be sitting in the garden or by the beach for a few minutes. In this space I choose not to lose myself in the monkey mind of thoughts. Just breathe in and out. Simply being in that moment. Not travelling off with thoughts of the past or the future. Some days it’s not so easy to do. Others it is a little easier. It doesn’t have to take a long period of time to benefit and feel centred. Practices such as Yoga (as well as Tai Chi, Pilates, Aikido etc) can provide the space and instruction to be present. The word Yoga means “union”. The breathe focus acts as the bridge between mind and body so we can 26

taking time out can bring clarity assess what each pose ‘feels’ like, bringing the mind to the now so we can adjust, align and heal our body. We can even choose which thoughts to be with. Giving us insight into how am I ‘being’ today, am I pushing, forcing and straining – feeling over determined? Am I feeling lethargic, uninspired or fearful? The way we do anything, is the way we do everything. As we tap into this way of being we gain the choice to change it. Taking time out can bring clarity so we can adjust what we need to in our lives to create more of what we really want. I am yet to hear anyone walk out of a Yoga class and say “geez, wish I never came to Yoga today!” Find what your ‘Yoga’ is, honour yourself by creating the space to simply be, even if it’s just for 2 minutes a day...or join us at our Bali Heart Retreat and indulge in 5 days of YOU!

Well you’re not alone. Research shows Acne affects 80% of teenagers and 40% of adults. Acne scarring is a high risk for many sufferers. A permanent solution to acne now is available. Having travelled the globe for years in search of a drug free solution for acne, Dr Phillippa McCaffery discovered a revolutionary new treatment called Sebaceous Gland Ablation (SGA). It was originally developed in Japan in the mid 1990s and until now it has only been available in Japan and Korea. Dr McCaffery has introduced SGA to all Clearskincare Clinics across Australia including clinics at Cronulla, Miranda and Kogarah. The treatment is an affordable solution to those looking for a permanent acne and breakout solution. So how does SGA work? Sebaceous Gland Ablation directly targets the oil glands affected by Acne. Oil glands are responsible for all the different types of acne - from minor breakouts and pimples, to the more severe forms of Acne. SGA is performed with a fine probe, which is inserted in the acne affected oil glands, to progressively eliminate them. Results have shown it is well tolerated and usually no anesthetic is required. When the Summer Sun Rises, Little Nippers come out to Play OF SURF LIFE SAVING’S 153,000 MEMBERS IN Australia, over 58,000 are nippers aged 5 to 13 years. This shows how popular the junior movement is within surf lifesaving. The nippers of today are the future of surf lifesaving tomorrow. Unlike senior Surf Lifesavers, Nippers do not patrol the beaches. The focus for Nippers is on having fun and surf awareness. Nippers learn about safety at the beach. They learn about dangers such as rocks and animals (e.g. the blue-ringed octopus), and also about surf conditions such as rip currents, sandbars, and waves. Older Nippers also learn some basic first aid and may learn CPR when they reach the age of 13. Every parent wants their child to lead a happy, healthy and active youth. There is no better place for this than surf lifesaving and nippers. It is a fun outdoors activity that grows a child’s confidence and teaches valuable life skills. For Nippers, the beach is their classroom. They gain confidence by passing the ‘tests’ of swimming, body boarding, beach sprints, dolphin-

diving, spotting a rip, having fun with new friends and discovering things about themselves. It’s not hard work. We like to call it serious fun! The skills gained in nippers stick to the soul like sand from the beach and will be carried for life. All Surf Clubs around Bate Bay beaches welcome Nippers each Sunday morning during summer. Bring your child down and join the fun!

THE ROLEX SYDNEY HOBART YACHT RACE will start C at Y1pm C on aDecember 26, 2012 on the waters of Sydney Harbour, head south through the Tasman Sea, across Storm Bay and finish in the Derwent River. It has become an icon of Australian summer sport, ranking in public interest with such national events as the Melbourne Cup, the Davis Cup and the cricket tests between Australia and England. No annual yachting event in the world attracts such huge media coverage than does the Sydney Hobart. It’s a tough 643 mile race to Hobart that started in 1946 with a bet between local Australian sailors and a visiting British Royal Navy skipper, Captain John Illingworth. The Pommy won ruising

that first race hands down with his yacht “Rani”. As usual the Australians wanted a rematch and the tradition of an annual event started. Australian yachting legend Syd Fischer has announced he will skipper last year’s line honours winner in the race. Fischer joked: “They say in yachting that the length of your yacht should reflect your age – so now I have to live to 100!” The 85 year-old, who turns 86 in March, has taken control of the 100ft super maxi and renamed the yacht “Ragamuffin-Loyal”. Shire participation in the Hobart race is usually well represented by members of Cronulla Sailing Club. At the front of the fleet, local professional sailor Matt Pearce has >>

The

Great Race signed on as crew of “Ragamuffin Loyal”. He’ll join long time Ragamuffin crew member Larry Jamieson onboard from Cronulla who will be competing in his 28th Hobart race. Local sailor Chris Bran will skipper “Brannew”, an apt name for his new Beneteau First 40. Taren Point sail maker Ian Short is helping Chris campaign the boat south. They could be a contender for the overall prize on handicap if conditions go their way. Another local professional sailing identity and former Australian Sailing Olympic representative Neville Wittey will usually be found spearheading a crew south.

David Pescud from Gymea skippers the yacht “Sailors with disAbilities”. David famously proved they are just as competitive and capable as the next boat when he won the PHS division of the tragic 1998 race. Six people were killed that year in horrendous conditions but Pescud and his team powered on to victory. Catch all the excitement and drama of the race live both on TV and online. The start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will be broadcast live on the Seven Network throughout Australia, webcast live to a global audience on Yahoo!7 and the Australia Network throughout the Asia Pacific Region.

BRETT WHITELEY:

On The Water 16 NOVEMBER 2012 – 27 JANUARY 2013 Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre is proud to present “Brett Whiteley: On the Water”. It is the first major exhibition in Sydney since 1995 of works by one of the most celebrated Australian artists of the twentieth century. This year marks 20 years since he passed away at the age of 53. Whiteley had a prodigious career creating some of the most iconic images in Australian art. His lyrical and sensuous work attracted international acclaim and his work is held in major public and private collections across the world. Whiteley was an artist with a deep fascination with nature and two subjects were the mainstay of his

work – the landscape and the nude. “Brett Whiteley: On the Water” explores the special relationship Whiteley had with these subjects. His art features the deep blue of Sydney Harbour, the glistening beaches and the pleasurable lifestyle of bathers languidly basking in the sun. Over 60 works including studies and etchings, photographs, sculptures of birds, sharks and bathers are featured. A highlight of the show is his last unfinished work. Unfinished Beach Polyptych is 6 imposing panels spanning 7 metres. These are leaving The Brett Whiteley Studio for the first time in seventeen years. 36

crystals to look at and experience. It is a truly refreshing energy amidst the hustle and bustle of our modern life. Small children especially love to visit the ‘fairy shop’ and are magnetically drawn to the natural beauty of crystals. Every day there are professional readers available by appointment, who offer a holistic counselling approach to their clients, rather than just a ‘fortune telling’ approach. Other services such as Reiki Therapy are available. Every Tuesday night there is a FREE mindfulness meditation group for those who wish to attend.

legal matters

DEATH & TAXES

– There is no escape from either!

It is a fact that one day we will all die! Whilst we may not be here we will leave valuables behind. After all, you can’t take it with you. This is where Estate Planning comes in. A holistic Estate Plan will allow for the successful management and ultimate transfer of your assets. You want to do this in a manner that ensures legal protection of family assets, is tax effective and aims to ensure that estate litigation is avoided. Broadly speaking Estate Planning should involve two distinct areas - incapacity and death. Incapacity can unfortunately strike us at anytime. If you are not prepared it can cause enormous legal issues for you and your loved ones. Having an Incapacity plan in place will ensure your loved ones can manage your legal, financial, health and medical affairs for you when you can’t.

Death is inevitable. We need to enjoy life while we can but that shouldn’t stop us from planning for the transition of our assets. An effective Estate Plan can minimise tax, provide asset protection, ensure our children are appropriately cared for, and take into account assets held through related entities. It adequately considers superannuation and reduces the ability for unwanted beneficiaries to get their hands on your estate. To discuss an Estate and Incapacity Plan that covers the issues raised above please contact Simon Bennett of Southern Waters Legal on 02 9523 5535.

my street

Telopea Avenue

Telopea Avenue SOUTH CARINGBAH

Welcome to our regular section where Shine focuses on “My Street”. It is a local street that you may already live in or may like to live in. We do the research for you. The pros, the cons and how much it would cost to live there. Let’s face it; the last few years have been tough. During the world financial crisis, many a business went south and real estate, especially at the top end, went with it. Shock, horror! It is the first time a generation of Australians have seen real estate prices go backwards and it came as a rude shock to many. But amidst all that gloom and doom one simple fact stood out: families need a roof over their heads. Plain and simple. We all look for the best life our money can buy for both ourselves and our families. While the 3 and 4 million dollar waterfronts are a great dream for many of us, in reality the average price of a free standing home in Sydney is around the million dollar mark. That price range is what we are looking at today. The South Caringbah area is the back bone of the Shire. It provides a great lifestyle for people at a reasonable price. A good example is Telopea Avenue in South Caringbah. It runs East West between Saunders Bay Road and Willarong Road South. Telopea is a quiet, tree lined street walking distance to schools, shops and the bay side. It’s about five minutes drive to the Cronulla beaches. The houses on the northern side of the street are slightly more preferable because they are on very large blocks of land and allow the precious 50

northern sun into private backyards. The blocks are all large enough to build the grandest of homes with pools etc and still have room for a garden. If you have a home in this area and want to sell it, they will be snapped up. While we have watched property owners at the top end burn millions, Mr Average in Telopea Street, South Caringbah has quietly been doing OK thank you. Prices are stable and family life in The Shire goes on. Here are some recent examples. 1 Telopea Avenue is a superb residence in a highly desired location and a well appointed full brick family home. * Private North facing yard with in-ground pool, pool house and spa. * Situated on 1,132 sqm land (approx) with 20.12m frontage * Formal lounge, dining and family rooms centred around kitchen * Impressive kitchen boasting extraordinary Gaggenau appliances * Completed by a spacious billiard or rumpus room for entertaining. The property sold earlier this year for $1,422,000. While above our stated average, you’d have to agree the property offers a great lifestyle. Below are other examples from the South Caringbah area.

48B Turriell Point Rd, Port Hacking. House. $2,500,000 666a Port Hacking Rd, Dolans Bay. House. $1,910,000 8 Beauford Ave, Caringbah South. House. $1,215,000 Parents looking to house a family in a stable environment should consider South Caringbah.

As the 2012 calendar year comes toward a close for the festive season we have seen a continued upward trend for the local property market. There have been an increasing number of new listings and the volume of monthly sales have followed suit throughout the final quarter of this year. People are as interested as ever in buying property. Our office has enjoyed an average of 490 buyer inspections per week throughout this last quarter. Other highlights include a further interest rate reduction to the cash rate which is now at a low 3.25%. Across Sydney the auction clearance rate has held firm through the 60% marker with our office maintaining an 87% clearance rate this spring. We note that the majority of activity remains firmly below the $2m price barrier. The property market is gathering momentum from the base up with top end sales remaining a far more considered process. This may be sobering news for our top end vendors but is a healthy trend regards the longer term. We see an increase in first time investors taking advantage of their self managed super fund to invest. We also see the experienced investor moving back to bricks and mortar to rebuild their investment portfolio. Our office is enjoying strong demand from potential tenants with 84 new properties leased over the past 90 days. That is an average of less than 7 days on the market keeping vacancy rates below 2%. This is great news for our landlords ensuring a consistent income stream with minimal out of pocket expenses. With increasingly positive sentiment over recent months we are looking forward to a strong new year with renewed confidence. I wish everyone a safe and festive holiday season.

GET BITTEN by the

“Funnel Web”

these holidays It’s the Longest, Biggest and most exhilarating new water thrill ride built in the World!

Dare to enter Funnel Web’s burrow with three of your friends for a heart stopping 30km an hour ride, twisting and turning in darkness, before plunging into the “Funnel Web”... watch out that you don’t “Get Bitten by the Funnel Web”! You’ll experience multiple zero-gravity moments as your raft travels up and down the funnel, being sucked deep into the burrow, only to re-enter the darkness for one final twist and turn before splashing out “free at last” into the landing pool. Jamberoo Action Park is just over an hour south of Sydney or 20 minutes south of Wollongong. From Sutherland follow the highway to Kiama and take the Jamberoo exit. Then follow the road to the Jamberoo township. Turn right at the roundabout at the end of the town, and follow the signs for 4 kilometres to Jamberoo Action Park on the left. In case you think Jamberoo is only for big kids, think again – there’s plenty to keep the littlies happy! The following attractions are designed especially for toddlers to keep them happy and safe. Billabong Beach A special area just for young children. Watch them play in heated shallow pools and mini water slides, dodging jets of water from colourful, make-believe critters like Charlie the Croc, Percy the Pelican and Freddie Frog. The Settlers Shack is a real hit and just like a big aqua cubby house! 54

Outback Bay – Kiddies Cove Splash in the shallows of Outback Bay! Make friends with the colourful marine creatures including a whale, dolphin and seahorses, or climb aboard a mini-replica of the SS Jamberoo! Mushroom Pool A bright and colourful pool with lots of splash-out fun! Ride the mini water slide or get soaked under the giant, colourful mushroom waterfall. Kangaroo Island Development The first stage of Jamberoo Action Park’s longawaited expansion plans have commenced. “Kangaroo Island” is set to become the most exciting, high-thrill, water-based rides ever built in NSW. The $11.6 million project includes new rides, a 1,700 space car park and road upgrades on Jamberoo Road to allow faster access into the park. Dax Eddy, General Manager of Jamberoo Action Park, commented: “It’s fantastic that construction has finally commenced and we are now in the process of building the most thrilling water ride experiences ever seen in NSW.” “We will build an Interactive Water Play Area that will be the largest ever built in Australia. Also a Tornado water slide – a raft based ride that loops and twists before dropping into a huge funnel then shooting out into a splash pool – there’s some exciting things ahead!” 1215 Jamberoo Road, Jamberoo. eat health Your Voice on Food and Activity for Children…

fussy eaters Are you struggling with a fussy eater? Fussy eating isn’t always about food, it’s often about children wanting to be independent. Here are some ideas to help with your child’s fussy eating habits. Make mealtimes a happy, social occasion. Try not to worry about knocked over drinks or food on the floor, and give positive feedback on the habits you want continued. Try not to just focus on the negatives.

Make eating a positive and fun experience. Invent the ‘Party Plate’. Children love variety so get creative by mixing up a plate of healthy (80%) and sweet things (20%). They can choose what order they would like to eat and explore some new foods while enjoying the freedom of eating in whatever order they like. This could be for snack or meal times. It’s a good idea to turn the TV off and to talk to each other instead. You could also encourage your toddler to sit at the table with the family for most meals, but only for 15 minutes or so.You can build this time up as they get older.

They have also awarded a “Badge of Honour” to Weet-Bix Kids for being a healthy children’s cereal that does indeed live up to its marketing claims. Suspect: Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids Weet-Bix Kids is a salt-reduced version of regular Weet Bix that claims to be giving your kids the best start to the day and to provide 1/3 of your child's daily calcium and iron needs. play Play vs. Digital Media for Children and Parents “Even small changes can make a big difference if they become lifelong habits” Does your child spend more time watching TV, playing video games and using the computer than they do exercising? Children who play outdoors with other children have the opportunity to practice social interaction skills. They develop self-confidence and learn how to take turns, communicate with other children and develop play “manners”. In addition to social skills, outdoor physical play develops your child's self-confidence in his physical abilities. 58

A frequent sight these days is people out for their morning walk with a mobile phone in one hand talking on the phone. Another is mums head down while at the park involved in their phone either talking or texting. We need to ask ourselves what is more important. Get involved with your child's outdoor play while at the park or by going on a nature walk “hunting and gathering”, swimming or taking a walk (without your phone). Teach and encourage your children to ride their bike, scooter or skateboard. Children who learn to love outdoor physical activities carry these healthy interests into adulthood. As adults, they stay fit and continue to lessen their chances of serious illnesses. So what are you waiting for? Turn off the computer, TV and your mobile phone and step outside and have some fun!

Baby's

First Christmas

It’s a special time of year. When your new baby is in your arms, there is no doubt your life has changed forever. Babies are too little to understand what Christmas is about, so how do you create special memories for you and your baby at Christmas time? Remember you and your baby come first. Try not to over-schedule yourself at this exciting time of year. You are going to be popular! The last thing you need is an overtired, distressed baby. Buy or make a pretty Christmas ornament for your tree. Make sure it has your baby’s name and birth date on it. It can become a special tradition with your child helping to pick them out with you as they get older. Buy or make a little outfit or accessory that fits in with the festive season. For instance use some puff paint and decorate their tee shirt with a mini

60

Christmas tree. There are lots of Christmas themed toys and accessories on sale at this time of year. Choose one for them to use over the period and then save it in a special memory box for them. Try to document your Christmas with as many photos as you can. Include the expression on your baby’s face when they see Christmas tree lights or meet Santa. Get them made into a photo book. These are inexpensive and a beautiful memento of the memories you created with your baby at their first Christmas.

At Love Your Smile Dental care, they promote programs that encourage good oral health for all infants, children and young people. They are there to support overall health and quality of life which underpins good oral health throughout the life of the individual. Some children have more decay than others and are more susceptible to decay. This can be true of children in the same family. Thorough and regular examinations are necessary to monitor oral hygiene, dental and facial development, the potential need for orthodontic treatment, decay risk and gum disease. YOUR CHANCE

TO SHINE

Position available

for a sales person in the industry. M Marketing, Advertising and Media

The media industry is a fast-moving, ever-changing sector that relies on the ability of its sales people to sell a given medium as the solution that will connect clients with their target audience. This could mean selling into a single medium such as our local Shine magazine for a few hundred dollars or selling high-value packages worth thousands of dollars across a portfolio of media such as high quality international magazines, internet or digital media. The media sales industry is open to anyone who can demonstrate an aptitude for sales. Get this right and your career will take care of itself.

It is your job to develop new leads, cold call potential clients, manage existing customer relationships and close the deal. It could be done either over the telephone or in person, with the aim of maximising sales revenues, increasing your client portfolio and hitting sales targets. The role of a media salesperson is a challenging one, especially in light of the plethora of media options that advertisers can choose from. But as Maurice Saatchi, a guru of the modern advertising industry said: “People do not know what they want until a brilliant person shows them.” Can you be that ‘brilliant’ person and help our publications Shine?

out at Cronulla THERE ARE OVER FORTY ONE RESTAURANTS IN CRONULLA. Just to survive you’ve got to be on your game! Recently Shine magazine researched the Cronulla Café scene. I found thirty six café’s within walking distance of Cronulla’s main drag. The competition is intense but this same competition makes it a mecca for us, the dining public. From Indian to Italian, Lebanese to Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian, Seafood and all sorts of food, you can get it in Cronulla. While new places are always stepping up to the plate, let’s look at some that have survived the test of time. Good food, good wine, great live music. The Brass Monkey has been around since your editor was thrown out for under age drinking – quite a while ago! This popular Cronulla destination plays host to a bevy of talent almost every night. The menu features mezze and tapas dishes designed for sharing as well as a wine list that rivals many restaurants. I’m amazed it isn’t more popular but it literally is underground. This Brass Monkey is gold.

Down the lane, the popular Grind cafe has moved from its pocket-sized former locale into a shiny new laneway spot. Hugely popular with locals, expect to sidestep parked surfboards when you step in for a quick espresso, macchiato, cappuccino, flat white, doppio or Bean of the Day before hitting the waves.

Cronulla has moved to fine dining! Mario Kalpou introduced a fresh dose of style into the area with his modern-Italian venture, The Old Library. His chefs are plating up classic Italian flavours combined with contemporary cooking techniques. The Old Library is not cheap but it has stepped up the Cronulla dining scene. fishing with giffo

Perfect Preparation prevents Poor performance THEY SAY 10% OF FISHERMEN CATCH 90% of the fish. I guarantee you the 10% have a plan mapped out well before they bait a hook and toss it out. If you want to join the 10%, sourcing quality bait and presenting it correctly is the most logical place to start. A good friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, once said that “the best bait to catch fish was a $20 note at the local seafood shop. Never fails!” he boasted. Whilst I can’t disagree with his logic, it is hardly the most exciting of endeavours. If you are like me and prefer to catch your own, the first step is to determine where you are going to fish. This will help to identify likely species you will encounter. With piscatorial possibilities in mind, you can then tailor (pun intended) bait selection accordingly. So what are the options? The quintessential estuarine offering is the humble prawn. They are brilliant bait, come in a variety of sizes; they freeze well, are easily sourced and are staple fare for nearly all closed water species. When presenting, make sure they are as elongated as possible. A prawn simply threaded onto a J shaped hook looks nothing like one in real life. Make sure your hook size is adequate for the size of the prawn. Start by inserting the hook near the tail and feeding it through until you reach the legs then bring the hook out to expose the barb. Not only will it sit well on the hook, the exposed barb will ensure better hook ups when the fish takes it. For fussy fish like Bream and Whiting, peeling the prawn will greatly improve results. Next best is pilchards. They also store well and can be sourced from the same locations. (Servos and corner stores). Whole pilchards are best fished on gang hooks and great for Tailor, Snapper and large Flathead. Half Pilchards, particularly the tail section, which tends to stay on the hook better, will catch Bream as well as those others previously mentioned.

The quintessential estuarine offering is the humble prawn. They are brilliant bait. Salted Pillies tend to be tougher and I find them a better option, particularly when beach fishing. Catching your own bait is well worth it. Yabbies can be pumped from the sand banks at low tide. Whiting and Bream can’t resist them. Present similarly to a prawn. Poddy Mullet can be caught in purpose built traps or even on handlines with tiny hooks and small bits of fresh bread. Hooked just above the tail they are superb for big Flathead or maybe even a Mulloway. Strips of bait fish such as Yellowtail are also awesome bait. Simply pin it once through the thick end and let the ‘tail’ waft around in the current. Any fish that will eat Pillies will take this bait. Of the rest, Beach or Blood worms are worth trying especially if targeting Whiting. Adopting these simple tips and techniques should see your catch rates improve. SHINEMAGAZINE2012

soul reason

The Christmas

season

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON OFTEN CAUSES our stress levels to sky rocket. We find ourselves on a seasonal treadmill lacking any “down” time. Why don’t our hearts shoot to the “merry” stage on their own accord at this magical time? Rather, they often migrate to the “weary” zone. Even in the traditional story found in the Gospel of Luke during the first Christmas in Bethlehem, urgency was afoot. However, smack in the centre of that fastpaced story we find the words: “But Mary”. When the mother of the baby King is mentioned, the hustle halts. She is not depicted as scurrying and hurrying. She is calm. Her contemplation goes beyond the commotion. To Jesus: The hope for the heart-broken widow; the rest for the worn-out woman; the truth for the tormented; the way for the wayward; the calm in the chaos. Weighing and pondering. Could we do the same? Could we find calm in the Christmas chaos?

Could we provide a role model for the wide-eyed kids in our lives on just how to slow down and, like the Wise Men of old, actually look for the Saviour? Pause. Ponder. Wait and weigh. If we are intentional, as was Mary, we can suspend the season for a flickering moment; discovering calm in the chaos and experiencing a holy hush among the hustle. Then, when the last strand of lights is taken down and the fruitcake is finished, we can look back on a Christmas season that was blessed, not stressed! by Robyn Lindsay

GARDENING

Sowing the seed

SOWING THE SEED

Yates Mini Greenhouse

for Christmas

CHRISTMAS IS A GREAT TIME TO SPEND WITH family, particularly with children, but keeping them occupied for six weeks can be expensive. You may want to consider getting them involved in the garden. Developing their own veggie patch or flower garden helps develop many skills and can be rewarding. Raised garden beds are available at hardware stores or simply set aside an area directly into the soil. A MINI GREENHOUSE is a terrific gift and can be used over and over again for years to come. You will need seed raising mix, seeds and good fitting gloves to get started with the greenhouse, all readily available at nurseries. Some nurseries actually run garden classes for children. SEEDS TO SOW IN SUMMER are tomatoes, silver beet, or sweet corn to name a few. All seed packets have instructions on the packaging , although Yates have a really great website that includes propagation tips, both growing from seed or from cuttings as well as how to look after your plants once established.

by Karen Smith, Gardens on The Go

The children can join their garden club for free. www.yates.com.au Strawberry plants are always popular; the children can pick them and love to search with a torch at night looking for snails. INVOLVE THE CHILDREN in planning the project; they will enjoy watching their seedlings appear and taking part in a healthy and educational activity. Most of all it should be fun. Enjoy!
