TO SHINE MAGAZINE ISSUE 34 Welcome to the April / May issue of Shine. As I write the ocean is still 23 degrees and life is good. The next two months will see the weather cool and season change. I look forward to watching the Camellias in our garden come into bloom during the life of this issue. A visit to the beautiful Camellia Gardens in President Avenue is a season must. Although Shine magazine is but a minnow up against the local media giants, our little Shine magazine also continues to bloom. We plan to simply “keep on keeping on” throughout 2013 and I hope you will continue to enjoy the ride with us. All the best,

YUMMY MUMMIES
Not so Yummy Mummy By Christine Youssef
When depression overtakes baby joy ... Have you ever come home with a bag of juicylooking red apples, eager to enjoy the crunchy experience? To the eye they look perfect: firm, shiny ... surely it will taste as delicious as it looks? But no, you bite in and it’s floury, mushy and tasteless - and you quickly affirm to, "not judge a book by its cover" or that "looks can be deceiving". Often what appears to be balanced, functioning, stable, even happy, can often be a vastly different story when you dig a little deeper, ask a few pertinent questions, or simply self-reflect. 8
SHINEMAGAZINE2013
Be aware that 10-15% of women develop POSTNATAL DEPRESSION in the months after the birth of a baby. It may start during pregnancy, and, if untreated, continue and even get worse after the birth. It helps to know if you are at risk... BEFORE PREGNANCY AND BIRTH - past history of depression or other mental health issues; relationship, financial, housing difficulties; little social or family support. THE BIRTH ITSELF - birth complications e.g. emergency caesarian; an ill or premature baby.
Be aware that 10 -15% of women develop postnatal depression in the months after the birth of a baby. Post birth - a baby who has problems with reflux, feeding, sleeping. The mother experiencing sleep problems; feeling detached or very negative about the baby. Depressive symptoms may include ... persistent low mood, loss of interest and joy in usual activities, change in sleep patterns and appetite, thoughts of worthlessness / guilt / helplessness, difficulty thinking clearly, anxiety, excessive worry or fear, persistent tiredness or fatigue. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (available at www.beyondblue. org.au), can help ascertain if you have common symptoms. It is important you see a health professional for a thorough assessment. Worth noting is that many women can be iron deficient or have thyroid issues. These need to be investigated as part of the treatment for PND. While many women benefit from anti-depressant medication, there are other options that can be considered. As a Naturopath, I have found the following strategies to be very supportive in women with PND. Herbal Medicines - Rhodiola, Withania, Rehmannia, Kava, and Hypericum (though this last herb is contraindicated in patients using antidepressant medications).
High potency omega 3 fatty acids - a deficiency has been linked to depressive illness. Hydroxytryptophan - 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin which converts to melatonin, the brain neurotransmitter essential for sleep onset. High potency magnesium - a neuro-muscular relaxant. Tyrosine, Zinc, B vitamins and Vitamin C for adrenal support. Diet - women with PND should avoid all caffeinated products and alcohol, increase their oily fish intake, ensure good quality protein at every meal, and stick to low GI foods. Lifestyle - regular exercise, massage, counseling, acupuncture and bowen therapy may all provide relief of anxiety and improve coping mechanisms. Help is available, but you need to reach out and ask for it. In doing so, you are showing strength and courage and self-awareness - qualities that will serve you well throughout your life. Trying to ignore or mask how you really feel is akin to the shiny, perfect apple...a different story on the inside. For Naturopathic support through this challenging time contact Christine Youssef at Health in our Hands on 9501 0326 or christine@healthinourhands.com.au Shinemagazine2013

someone in the shire Finding the Balance of work and play with Kath Walton For years we've been told it's better for both mother and child if mum spends as long as possible at home, looking after her baby. However new research has found the opposite. A lot of women get a sense of identity, contribution and meaning through their paid work. They find it easier to control things in the workplace. A baby is not controllable and often women find themselves isolated at home. Finding this balance of family, work and play along with looking after oneself can prove a juggling act. Kath Walton is living proof it can all be achieved. Kath grew up in Earlwood and ventured into the Shire at 18. Before starting a family Kath worked as a conference and banquet sales manager at Rydges in Cronulla. “I found this position gave me many skills professionally and personally” said Kath. In her mid 30’s Kath met her partner Craig and have two children Cooper aged 4 and Jesse aged 2. “I took eight months off for each of my boys and returned back to work part-time. This was a great way to re-enter work and find the life work family balance” said Kath. Finding time to get back into exercise took a while after having her children. “I now train 4 times a week minimum and have a lot more energy to fit in everything I want to do” commented Kath. Recently Kath launched a new business between her family, fitness regime and part-time work called KW Events www.facebook.com/KWEventsPartyPlanning. “After having the children I decided that I would really like to work for myself while the children are growing up. I began organising my children’s birthday parties and realised I was enjoying it. That is when the idea of making use of my previous work experience in event organising came up. It took a year of research to gather information together with the idea of KW Events – children’s party planning” said Kath. Kath manages her time by being organised and busy but always making sure the kids have the time they need with her. A lot is done once the boys are asleep at night or early morning. by Melisa George 14
“If you have an idea or goal you should pursue it!”
Five Things to Remember When Setting Goals: 1. Write Goals Down
Jot down your goals-this is powerful. Physically seeing your goals helps crystallize them in your mind and enables you to commit to them.
2. Make Goals Short, Attainable and Measurable
Set attainable short-term goals that can be measured.
3. Create Deadlines
Without deadlines goals are merely dreams. Set deadlines for both short and long-term goals
4. Look at your goals everyday! Visual aids are an effective way to program your brain.
5. Make Goal Setting a Routine Begin every morning with a "To Do" list. This will help you organise and better manage your time.

Rotator Cuff injury treatment The rotator cuff comprises four muscles and tendons that help stabilise the shoulder and assist in movement. The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint which can be easily injured by overuse, wear and tear or excessive force. Aging may be responsible for wear and tear, while sports or athletics may be the cause of the other two. When these muscles become injured, certain everyday functions such as raising your arm above your head, or tucking your shirt into your pants become difficult or impossible. Physiotherapy is usually successful in the majority of cases.Your therapist will begin with an evaluation of your physical condition, including muscle strength, range-of-motion and functional capabilities. He/ she will take into consideration your age, lifestyle and goals when drawing up a therapy program. Sessions will focus on isometric exercises (in which there is muscle contraction but no movement) and stretching. It is initially done with the help of the therapist until you can do them independently. Resistance bands and other simple equipment are helpful in this regard. Pendulum (swinging) exercises may be performed with the person bending at the waist so they do not have to lift the arms against gravity. These exercises help to increase range-of-motion and flexibility in the joint. Later on, begin weight lifting with light weights to increase strength, endurance and muscle. You may also perform daily living tasks such as bathing and dressing in order to train the shoulder to do those things it used to do.

knowing that physical and spiritual wellbeing are as much related to exercise and nutrition as they are to a sense of connectedness with others, one's self, one's surroundings and the world. Power Yoga offers not only a hot yoga body, but also a way to detox, relieve stress, and connect with mind and body. Their student’s say, “I can do things now that I wasn't able to do 20 years ago – It makes me more flexible, stronger and more aware of my body thanks to power yoga.” G.L. Classes are conducted in a heated room, anywhere from 25-30C as a warm environment not only helps muscles relax and stretch more, but we are eliminating toxins so that we can shine from the inside out. A male student had this to say, “I seriously think all the sweating has been detoxing my skin! It feels healthier; I think my skin is looking healthier and more even.” P.F. Twice a year they facilitate a 40-Day Yoga Challenge. It is based on a simple, yet powerful philosophy that brings your yoga practice and everyday life together, nourishing you from the inside out. Hot Yogi believe the only way to make progress in yoga is to commit to a regular practice. The 40-Day Challenge allows you to live the life you really want – with a spring in your step and loving every moment of your day – even the challenging ones! “Despite the “cursing” and the struggle to get through some classes, the strength that I got and my understanding of yoga has come in the last two years when I discovered power yoga.” G.L. Meet their tribe and become part of it…you are welcome at Hot Yogi!

with the City Stars KC DANCE PRINCIPAL KAREN DANCED WITH Radek Jonak on “Dancing with the City Stars recently to raise funds for the Cancer Council. After training in dance for as long as she can remember she then taught in the usual school halls and scout halls. KC Dance and Drama Academy finally moved into their own premises at Taren Point in the shire in 2004. The studio offers small classes of no bigger than 8 students which allows Karen to focus on individual students and ensure they master the art of dance. KC offer Classical Ballet, Jazz, Tap Dance and Flamenco in a family friendly environment. KC Dance and Drama specialises in CSTD Classical Ballet, CSTD Modern Jazz and Glenn Wood Tap. Karen's experience includes teaching at local high schools as a guest teacher for sports as well as teaching dance as the elective in girls, boys and co-ed schools. Karen has also choreographed for the local
musical society. Part of the fun is making their own costumes for events. Dance classes including Ballet and Tap can be for mature aged people. They cater for all types of physical conditions and capabilities from Hip replacements to back injuries. Three in this group photo above have recently passed their CSTD Elementary Exams. Karen is expanding with extra studios (also for hire) at 2 Resolution Drive, Caringbah. Contact her on 0417 600 400 or email: karen@kcdance.com.au

CHARITY GIFTS for Mother’s Day
IF YOU'RE STUMPED FOR IDEAS ABOUT WHAT to get your mum for Mother's Day this year, try thinking outside the box. It's easy to get wrapped up in figuring out what your own mum wants, but there are millions of mothers around the world in need. So this year, consider honoring your mum by helping out someone else's. Read on to learn about different ways to make a mother's day. Measles Vaccine - Protect 200 kids Australia has not seen a major epidemic of measles for almost 20 years, but around the world, 450 people die every day from this deadly yet entirely preventable disease. A gift of fab jabs from UNICEF will protect 100 kids from measles for just $31. http://www.unicef.org. au/Charity-Gifts/measles-vaccine-200-kids.aspx HIV Test Kit Babies born with HIV are disadvantaged before they even know it. With this basic screening kit, you can ensure 100 mums-to-be are tested before the birth of their child for HIV/AIDS. Mothers who know they carry the virus can then be treated with medication that prevents transmission to the unborn child. http://www.unicef.org.au/Charity-Gifts/HIV-Test-Kit.aspx Rescue Gifts –Charitable gifts that save lives. The International Rescue Committee's “From Harm to Home” program offers a way to donate much-needed goods and services to mothers across the globe. Choose a lifesaving gift from their website like the “Safe Birthing Kit” ($24) or “Farming Tools” ($60) and dedicate it to your mum or any other special woman in your life. Harm to Home will even send a Mother's Day card with information about the dedication on your behalf. Bonus:Your gift amount will be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000 to support the IRC's maternal health programs in Sierra Leone. http://gifts.rescue.org/ By Melisa George 24

and is for like minded people to come together and provide solace for those who know that there is more to life than their physical being. Many of us struggle with knowing there is so much more out there in the universe. Our minds and hearts are craving answers to: Why do I feel this way? What is that makes me feel this way? Why do I feel different about certain events and people when in their company? Remember the old saying "I TOLD YOU SO" when something goes the way you said it would. We are all entitled to venture out and find out more about why we feel the way we do. Be comfortable that you can do this without any judgment and grow within to a depth of love that is beautiful. Spiritualism is a warm and loving belief which offers peace in our mind and love in our hearts. The centre offers a place where everyone can come to experience and learn about the spirit realms and expand your knowledge with like minded people in an environment where you can open your mind and heart in complete safety and support. Development circles and workshops of various kinds, including Reiki and working with Spirit, will be run throughout the year. All treatments and readings are by appointment only. French Skincare comes to Cronulla The Ella Baché was created by Madame Baché in Paris in 1936. Her skincare philosophy was based on the belief that “no two skins are alike”. Madame Baché’s scientific understanding of the skin’s function led her to explore the individual benefits of many natural ingredients. She was one of the first to include ingredients such as tomato extract, vitamin C, nutrient rich algae and lanolin in her products. The principles forged in the early days are just as fundamental to Ella Baché today as they were in Paris in the 1930’s. Ella Baché is a unique Australian skincare company of over 160 independently owned and operated salons. Every employee is a trained Ella Baché Skincare Therapist. Ella Baché is the only skincare company in Australia that has a dedicated team of researchers creating products specifically for the Australian skin condition. Ella Baché Cronulla is proud to be the first Ella Baché salon in the Sutherland Shire. Sharon and her team are waiting to provide you with the very best in

While January is typically a slow month for the real estate sector, we hit the ground running with a copious amount of enquiries from prospective buyers and transactions taking place as early as the first week of January 2013. I am of the view that the relatively busy start to 2013 was attributable to the lack of properties for sale on the market coupled with the low interest rate levels. I think it would be fair to say there is a positive sentiment in the air across the market with most clients across the board expressing the view that they are happy to see 2012 in the rear vision mirror with a positive and upbeat outlook for 2013. Andrew Cooley, Auctioneer of Cooley Auctions said “In my opinion, we will see good quality stock come onto the market, however volume will still be light. As a result, buyer activity will increase which will in turn create more competition for properties and will drive stronger sales”. Andrew also commented that there was a consistent increase in auction clearance rates in the last quarter of 2012 which has continued into the new year with auction clearance rates as high as 76% across Sydney. This is a level not experienced for nearly a decade. As an office, we maintained an average clearance rate close to 86% throughout January and February 2013. In the investment sector of the local property market there has been a large number of both astute and first time investors turning back to property for security within their investment portfolios. The investment sector has also seen a considerable increase in buyer demand from SMSFs looking to create wealth through property and take advantage of structuring which allows an SMSF to borrow in order to invest in property. With the RBA maintaining a 3% cash rate and foreshadowing no further rate increases at this point in time, we are hopeful the conditions will continue to stimulate most market tears creating a snowball effect through to the high-end markets. I love talking about our market so if you’re thinking about making a move in 2013 or if you would like some genuine advice I welcome your call. Ben Southwell

legal matters Marriage Forever after - but just in case let’s get a Pre-Nup. It is difficult to ask your future bride or groom to commit to marriage for life and at the same time discuss the prospect of a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. The statistics tell us that 43% of first marriages end in divorce and that statistic increases to 52% for second marriages. Therefore it is important for a couple who intend to marry to discuss the possibility. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a legally Binding Financial Agreement created by a couple who intend to marry. It deals with the property owned by one or both prior to their marriage and determines how this property can be divided in the event of a relationship breakdown.
A Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a legally Binding Financial Agreement created by a couple who intend to marry. Advantages of having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement include: • Protection of Family Business, Heirlooms or Assets: Prevent your spouse from being able to
CJL
lay claim to items that you intend will pass to your children or immediate family. • Avoiding Unnecessary Legal Costs: An average settlement out of court can cost up to $8,000 and a disputed matter that goes to court can cost up to $50,000 in legal fees. • Protection in a Second Marriage: Ensure that your wealth will be distributed in accordance with your wishes and your children are provided for in the event of a divorce or your death. • Protection of Business Assets: A marriage breakdown can lead to a claim by a spouse to a share of the business, causing endless problems for business partners. • Protection from Creditors: If one spouse has substantial debts before marriage, an agreement can prevent you from having to take on that debt as your own. FERTILITY FACTS 2 -
Professor Greg Davis with his practice midwife Sallee, and her six week old son, Jack.
Treatment for Fertility Problems
IN A PREVIOUS ISSUE OF SHINE (ISSUE 29) THE CAUSES FOR INFERTILITY WERE DISCUSSED. As stated, the treatment is determined by the cause of the fertility problem. Ovulation Induction: If the woman is not ovulating regularly then her ovaries can be stimulated to produce eggs. The simplest drug is clomiphene (or Clomid™) which increases blood levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). This will stimulate the woman’s ovaries although there is a risk of producing too many eggs, increasing the risk of multiple pregnancies! In fertility units they often use FSH injections to do the same job. IntraUterine Insemination (IUI): IUI is an outpatient treatment, less costly and less stressful than IVF (see below) but the sperm has to be suitable to do it and at least one of the woman’s tubes needs to be open. Low dose hormone injections are given to stimulate blood flow to the ovaries and the cycle is monitored
closely. At the time of ovulation the partner gives a sperm sample which is prepared and introduced into the woman’s uterus with a fine tube through the cervix. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF): If the sperm is not suitable or the woman’s tubes are blocked a couple will need IVF. The woman is given higher doses of hormones to stimulate her ovaries to produce a number of mature eggs. Just before ovulation the eggs are “picked up” under an anaesthetic. Using ultrasound the egg is removed from each follicle in the ovary. The eggs and prepared sperm are mixed in the IVF laboratory and 3-5 days later one or two fertilised eggs (embryos) are put back in the uterus. Treatment success: With current treatments almost all couples can achieve not just pregnancy, but the family size they desire. However it does require dedication to treatment and life style changes which can be difficult and sometimes expensive.

Baby Sushi
Sushi is loved by children and adults alike - and this baby sushi is just perfect for little hands to hold. Roll fresh sticks of your kids' favourite vegetables inside the nori sheets and you have an easy and healthy dinner. Just follow these 4 Steps: Step 1: Rinse and drain rice 3 times or until water runs clear. Place in a sieve over a bowl. Set aside for 10 minutes to drain. Step 2: Place rice and 1 1/2 cups of cold water in a saucepan over medium heat. Cover. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer covered for 12 minutes or until water has absorbed. Remove from heat. Stand covered for 10 minutes. Step 3: Preheat Meanwhile, place vinegar and sugar in a microwave-safe jug. Microwave on high (100%) for 30 seconds. Stir to dissolve sugar. Transfer rice to a large ceramic dish. Using a spatula, stir to break up
the lumps. Slowly add vinegar mixture, lifting and turning rice, until rice has cooled. Step 4: Place 1 nori sheet, shiny-side down, on a sushi mat. Using damp fingers, spread 3/4 cup rice over nori, leaving a 2cm strip at 1 short end. Spread 2 teaspoons mayonnaise over centre of rice. Arrange one-quarter cucumber, avocado and carrot over mayonnaise. Using the sushi mat, roll up firmly to form a roll. Cut into 6 slices. Repeat with remaining nori sheets, rice, mayonnaise, cucumber, avocado and carrot to make 24 pieces. Serve with soy sauce. Melisa George

Confidence with who you are by Cherry Ripe
Shine has got you covered on beauty and fashion — and we also seek to inspire the healthiest you, too. Shine is dedicated to helping you be your very best self. Shine is a health oasis with a generous splash of wellbeing, because if there's one thing we need in this fast-paced world — it’s some time to focus on our number one. You! The Yummy Mummy! If 40 is the new 30 ... What if we are closer to 50? You don't want to be labelled "mutton dressed as lamb" right? But you don't want to dress too old either. Feeling stuck in some twilight zone? Let Cherry lead the way girls. Personally I believe 50 is the new 30. Getting 'old' is a state of mind. Sure your body is changing; however your mind is the same. You are the very same person that once turned 20. The advantage now is that you should feel better about yourself and more comfortable in your own skin. Confident with who you are. And if not - you should be. Finally you understand sexy.Yes - sexy! It is OK to be mature and sexy, Cherry knows all about that Learn to be confident with how to dress and capture your own style. Don't get hung up with store names. You will find cheap disposable clothing available at the stores that play 'dooff-dooff' music. You will also find basic, classic items at stores that target an older audience. Over 40? Dress sophisticated, stylish and sexy. Work out what is your own signature style. Do you love a certain colour? Do you have a favourite 'look'? Whatever it is - claim it and feel confident. It's yours. One of the most enticing aspects about the new season is the prospect of renewing your styling
There were five prominent makeup trends amongst a sea of equally beautiful looks. The best part is they're all wearable. outlook. While the Autumn '13 collections have just shown themselves, we've can make some observations about the silhouettes, prints, hemlines, and inspiration that will soon be on your radar. Listen up girls: sex appeal — reigns supreme. Denim is having a moment , designers are culling serious inspiration from the Far East, stripes aren't just for the classicist, and leather is — more than ever — a versatile luxury. March brought the last of the 2013 Autumn Winter fashion shows to get inspired by the beauty trends set to roll out as the weather cools down. There were five prominent makeup trends amongst a sea of equally beautiful looks. The best part is they're all wearable. From eyes to lips and skin, it's all typically rich and Wintery. Graphic prints, miniskirts and experimental silhouettes were among the ideas presented for Winter. Colour made a welcome return. Cherry has just returned from India – yes, what a spicy little Cherry I am! How inspiring to see beauty and fashion ablaze with colour in even the poorest of countries. Look out for my bright, almost neon like colours blazing out from a rich, green, tropical base as I strut around Cronulla.

You can have the flashiest rod and reel and the best bait, but unless your terminal tackle is in pristine condition, your chances of hooking and landing a fish are greatly reduced. Hooks need to be needle sharp to ensure positive and sound hook ups. Ones straight from the pack are generally good enough, but can be touched up with a small sharpening stone. I prefer to keep all my hooks and swivels in the small boxes or plastic satchels that they come in as they are quite airtight. Most importantly, do not put used hooks back in with new ones in your tackle box. It is false economy and it won’t be long before your tackle box is a rusty mess. Never place hooks in contact with sinkers as the process of corrosion will be greatly accelerated. Better to keep sinkers in an entirely different box. Multi use items such as lures are expensive and need to be looked after. They should be rinsed in fresh water after use and allowed to dry thoroughly before storing. Try to store them individually if possible. Another little trick is to place a few moisture absorption packs (Silica Gel) in your tackle box. They help maintain a dry environment and reduce corrosion. Your choice of tackle box is important. The multitray versions that extend as you open the lid do not hold items securely and lead to a mixed up mess. The single level with a close fitting lid is the best. If you can turn it over and shake without dislodging items from their compartment your onto a winner.

Bringing the Family Together Having recently become a father for the first time, I’ve noticed how important it is to balance life’s fast pace with my beautiful baby boy and wife. It reminds me of a time when I was a young boy sitting around the dinner table with my family. My Grandmother would place a magnificent leg of roast lamb with baked vegetables and gravy on the table. No TV, no mobile phones, just great stories and a great hearty meal. The roast mantle has now passed to me and although it’s not grandma’s roast, it’s my spin on an easy classic lamb leg roast recipe I often bake on a Sunday with my wife and family. I choose and recommend using an easy-carve leg roast, you still get the flavour from the shank bone and I remove all the internal fat, giving a lean consistent slice when carving!

Jumon Restaurant Cronulla has a delicious new addition to the restaurant scene. Locals are already blessed with a wide variety of eateries to catch up with friends, yet many are in high traffic areas and rather noisy. Jumon Korean restaurant is perfect for a quiet, peaceful meal. Wide front windows fold open to flow onto indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the gorgeous Munro Park. Owned by a brother and sister, they lovingly prepare and serve authentic Korean and Japanese dishes that are light, healthy and beautifully presented. Keeping Jellyfish as Pets Looking for a unique feature for your home that will get everyone talking? Try keeping Jellyfish as a pet? They are cheap and easy to keep. They also look very cool, especially when displayed under a colour changing LED light, like a living Lava lamp. Watching Jellyfish swimming around is mesmerizing and very relaxing. You can’t help but watch their rhythmic, pulsing swimming technique. Jellyfish are not actually a fish but an invertebrate that don’t have a brain. They rely on sensory organs; have no blood and no nervous system. Jellyfish are carnivores with several mouths that trail tentacles to catch and feed on small fish and zooplankton. Some Jellyfish contain zooxanthellae so are able to use the light for photosynthesis. Ensure they get at least 12 hours of light per day. The most popular Jellyfish to keep is a Moon Jellyfish because they do not sting and only grow to about 40cm. The average life of a Moon Jellyfish in an aquarium is 2 years but they are unlikely to live that long in the wild.
pets that shine
Keeping fish with the Jellyfish is not recommended as the Jellyfish may eat them. Depending on the fish it may even eat the Jellyfish. When you get your Moon Jellyfish they may not have long tentacles but you will find they extend once the animal is settled, happy and healthy. Jellyfish are an amazing display available to anyone looking for something interesting and different! Paul Talbot
