LOVE YOUR SMILE DENTAL CARE Make your family smile for the rest of their lives
BABIES AND TODDLERS Did you know that dummies and sucking on Þngers or thumbs can cause problems with the development of the jaw and movement of teeth? By encouraging your baby to stop using dummies at the end of the Þrst year you can prevent the need for expensive remedial treatment of major problems. Signs that your child may be affected by the prolonged use of a dummy include an open bite (where the front teeth do not meet when biting), protruded upper teeth, tilted lower teeth and a narrow jaw. This can lead to difÞculties with cutting foods with the front teeth, with speech (difÞculty pronouncing certain sounds) and even breathing. Early detection and management can prevent many of these problems developing. Talk to us soon.

CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS Prevention is always best. Until they are at least 10 years old, kids brushing should be supervised to make sure that no food particles remain between or behind teeth. Your children learn their habits (good and bad) from you. Your positive reinforcement of their good oral health behaviours will help their teeth last a lifetime.
GROWN UPS Study, shift work, sport. All reasons for young adults not to brush, ßoss and visit the dentist. We know life is full of deadlines, but don’t let your smile be one of them. Preventative oral hygiene can be quick and simple. Remedial treatment is not. You have the choice.

TO SHINE MAGAZINE ISSUE 35 Winter is here and beachside resort towns like ours tend to hibernate for the next few months. When I walk through the main street each day I encounter more familiar faces than not. Kind of nice really. As the cold south west wind blows in off the snowy mountains we have the fire cranked up each night and enjoy comforting roasts. With incredibly mild winters, weekend sport is a pleasant break. Go the Sharkies! As a life member of Cronulla Sharks I have supported them through thick and thin. Rug up, relax and enjoy this issue of Shine magazine with me. Best regards,

exercising in winter
With the colder months closing in, it is important to recognise the risks associated with exercising in these conditions. Cold weather increases demands on the body which can result in reduced performance or injury such as sprains or strains. 8

Cool
Exercising The winter months do not need to spell the end of your exercise routine. By following these tips you can stay fit, motivated and warm when the weather turns cold. Address any underlying health conditions. Certain precautions may need to be undertaken for people with conditions such as asthma, heart problems or diabetes. Take time to warm up, stretch and cool down. Undertaking exercise in colder weather can mean joints, muscles; ligaments and tendons may be stiffer than usual. This can lead to a greater risk of injury. Sports Medicine Australia indicates that “hospital data show an increase of more than 30 percent for sporting injuries during winter.” Therefore it is important to warm up, stretch and cool down for longer than usual. Stay hydrated. Even though the weather is cooler, it is important to keep up adequate water intake before, during and after physical activity. An alcoholic beverage may be enticing however alcohol actually causes our blood vessels to dilate and therefore increase heat loss. Sunburn. The weather may be colder and overcast but sunburn will still occur. Applying 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen and wearing appropriate eyewear will assist in the protection from UV radiation. This is particularly important if you are heading to the snowfields, where UV is significant. Clothing and Acclimatising. One of the most common mistakes people make is wearing too much clothing. This can lead to overheating. Exercise generates a substantial amount of heat. When we exercise we also sweat (our bodies ‘natural cooling system’). The solution is to dress in layers! Add or remove depending on exercise intensity and conditions. If you are in extreme conditions such as skiing or snow-boarding, put on a thin layer of synthetic material, such as polypropylene, which draws sweat away from your body. Avoid cotton, which stays wet next to your skin. Next, add a layer of fleece or wool for insulation. Top this with a waterproof, breathable outer layer. A heavy down jacket or vest may cause you to overheat if you're exercising hard.
Exercise generates a substantial amount of heat. When we exercise we also sweat (our bodies ‘natural cooling system’). The solution is to dress in layers! If you're lean, you may need more insulation than someone who is heavier. Protect your hands, feet and ears. Our blood flow is concentrated at the body’s core, leaving the hands and feet more exposed to cold conditions such as frostbite. Appropriate footwear is important at all times, however it is vital in winter. If it is too tight or too loose it will affect skin circulation and cause blisters. If you are wearing gloves or mittens try wearing a thin pair underneath to prevent heat loss. The colder weather does not mean the end of your exercise routine. Hopefully with these helpful hints you can stay motivated, warm and safe this winter! By Carly Groves Physiotherapist Southside Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Centre Shinemagazine2013

The hidden
benefits of exercise
REDUCE YOUR CANCER RISK OR IMPROVE YOUR RECOVERY. Cancer cells feed off sugar. Insulin and Insulin Growth contribute to tissue inflammation and the growth and spread of tumors. A low sugar diet and regular exercise creates a low sugar environment in your body. Prostate, breast, colon, ovarian, and testicular cancers have good evidence showing exercise can reduce your risk, increase your chance of surviving, and have fewer relapses. Exercise also reduces the quantity of fat tissue, the principal storage site of carcinogenic toxins. REDUCE THE AGING OF YOUR CELLS AND PREVENT CHRONIC DISEASE. Telomeres are strands of DNA at the end of your chromosomes which protect them from damage. Gradual erosion or shortening of telomeres leads to cells aging and dying. Exercise has been shown to prevent telomere shortening resulting in an anti-aging effect at the cellular level. STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM.
Exercise may help improve your immunity by: * Flushing out bacteria from the lungs and increasing the output of waste via urine and sweat. * Increasing the circulation of antibodies and white blood cells through the body. * Exercise may prevents bacterial growth, allowing the body to fight infection more effectively * Slowing down the release of stress-related hormones. Stress increases the chance of illness. If you wish to reduce your risk of chronic illness, cancer, infection or just improve your overall feeling of wellness and energy - please call your Naturopath to find solutions that work for you. FRANCES DUNN BEGAN HER FLORISTRY career at the large city florist ‘Searls’ in the early fifties. Now retired at 77 she still keeps a watchful eye on the family business named ‘Frances Dunn Florist’ involving three generations of creative women. At the fresh age of 22 Frances married and moved to Miranda where she initiated her dream of becoming a successful florist. Along this journey was a dedication to hard work and perseverance through teaching floral art at Port Hacking High School, hosting demonstrations, countless charity work and networking within the Sutherland Shire community to start her small business. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Janelle trained at a major florist in Sydney’s Inner West in the seventies and moved into the family business in the early eighties. How Do You Feel?
Feel Beautiful? Here’s How with Cherry Ripe The way you dress affects the way you think, the way you feel, the way you act, and the way others react to you. "Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it. Yves Saint Laurent The Top Five things Cherry Ripe Must-Have This Winter 1. Burgundy: This is the latest colour for the cooler months. Think knitwear, dress and fitted jacket. Burgundy teams perfectly with black, grey & cream. It warms up your white face and suits so many skin tones. Try accessories to lift your outfit such as burgundy belts, jewellery, scarf, tote and even burgundy gloves. So versatile and ever so sexy! 2. Low heel, black, knee-high boots: These extremely comfortable boots give your legs a long look with black leggings or skinny jeans. Wear with a heavy knit maxi skirt or teamed with opaque tights and a dress of any length. Make sure you buy boots that are snug around your calf. If you have thicker calf muscles, look for elastic along the length of the boot. Avoid heavy detailing - go for good quality leather. These boots will last years! 16
Shinemagazine2013
Shine #35.indd 16

3. Shape wear: I have seen over and over amazing transformations of women who add shape wear under an outfit. Focus on the bits of your body you want to minimise and try on a range of products that smooth out that area. For example, if tummy area is your concern, try shape wear high-rising briefs, full bodysuits, body slips and bicycle pant styles. 4. Faux Fur: Adds such glam to a basic item. For example, I love fur trim around the collar of a fitted jacket. Pop that on and you will feel so alpine chic! My advice, find a jacket with a removable fur trim. Not only does this give you more variety but also easier for cleaning. 5. Cherry red (of course) demi-matt lipstick: As the famous and beautiful Gwyneth Paltrow once said, "Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That and a kick-ass red lipstick of course!" Go Gwyneth says Cherry! Now go forth and be beautiful girls!

The Sewing and Handcrafting Hub EVER SINCE CLAUDIA WAS A LITTLE GIRL, she has been passionate about making things. Anything really, as long as it involved hand and machine sewing or crafting. Today she still loves making costumes, accessories, clothes and wall art and has always enjoyed and appreciated genuinely handmade goods. Over the last decade, Claudia has learned to sew and craft on a much larger scale and developed an understanding of where fabrics come from and how they are produced. That’s when her journey down the ‘eco path’ began and she has not looked back since. Claudia launched Eco Fabrics in 2009 as an online, family-owned business. Eco Fabrics focus on providing the sewing and handcrafting community with organic alternatives to plastics based fabrics and craft items. They offer crafters the opportunity to work with beautiful Eco friendly fibres such as organic cotton, bamboo, linen and hemp. They also stock beautiful sewing patterns chosen to complement their yardage.
They also stock beautiful sewing patterns Eco Fabrics favour local designers. If you would like to craft socially with Claudia and other like minded ladies, feel free to pop down to the store in Port Hacking Road, Caringbah and join their two hour social craft sessions. They also run regular workshops, so if you are interested in Sewing and Handcrafting, make sure you subscribe to their newsletter. The Eco Fabrics Facebook page is another great way to see what’s happening The Eco Fabrics store is open five days a week or visit their website at www.ecofabrics.com.au to peruse their range of sewing and handcrafting products online.

In fact, no one will know you’re wearing Invisalign unless you tell them. By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth right before your eyes. Invisible Removable and Comfortable Invisalign is comfortable to wear and doesn’t require you to change your busy lifestyle. Because the aligners are removable, you can eat your favourite foods while brushing and flossing normally to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

KNITTING
for a purpose
A “KNITTING PROJECT” is underway at The Hub Community Centre! These lovely ladies meet every Friday to create sleeping bags for the homeless. Homelessness is a hidden problem in such a beautiful place as The Shire. The co-ordinator at The Hub said “People who are homeless or risk homelessness attend the Community Centre daily for support, food and a cup of coffee. Some of these people live in the National Park or in their cars, some are sleeping rough in local parks and caves near the beach, or couch surfing from place to place with little or no resources.” Genny created the concept and pattern for the bags and named them “cozy bags”. These knitted sleeping bags provide a very practical solution for those who desperately need warmth on a cold winter’s night. The sleeping bags will be distributed to various services and
locations across the Shire and directly to those accessing the services. The Hub was pleased to have the support of local Cafés who helped with their wool drive raising over $500! A big thanks to cafés such as Bianco Nero in Gymea, Café on Kingsway in Caringbah and the Hospitality Establishment’s White Horse cafe at Sutherland who gave a cash donation. If you are a keen knitter and want to ‘give back’ to the community and meet with a lovely group of Women each Friday, contact: The Hub Community Centre. IVF Questions Answered DR ANDREW ZUSCHMANN ANSWERS SOME COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT IVF. How common is it to have fertility issues? About one in six couples face difficulties conceiving. What do I do if I’m experiencing delayed fertility? If you are under the age of 35 and have been trying to conceive naturally for at least 12 months, or you are over 35 and have been trying for 6 months you should get a referral from your GP to see a fertility specialist. What treatment options are available? Many couples will conceive with simple measures, and won’t need Medically Assisted
Reproduction (MAR). IVF is the most well known. IVF stands for in-vitro fertilization, where eggs are collected from the ovary and fertilized in a laboratory. The embryo is then implanted back into the uterus. ICSI is intracytoplasmic sperm injection, in which sperm is injected directly into the egg via a laboratory. How many IVF cycles does it take to get pregnant? Most women achieve a pregnancy within 3 to 6 cycles. What is the Mild Ovarian Stimulation (MOS) technique? Mild Ovarian Stimulation requires less hormones, which has fewer side effects on your body and results in more babies per embryos transferred. Dr Zuschmann brings fertility expertise to The Shire and has a history of commitment to women’s health. He combines the latest techniques with a reputation for sensitive patient care. Dr Zuschmann is the only fertility specialist to provide egg collection, transfer and monitoring in The Shire. For more information visit www. demeterfertility.com or www.andrewzuschmann.com

Long Day Care or Preschool? This is a common question that many parents ask once their child turns three. Are children better off in a Long Day Care Centre where they may have attended from a very young age, or is a Preschool a better option before going to school? Due to the new National Quality Standards, all child care services are required to provide high quality preschool programs. Over the years, preschool education has moved from teacher based learning to child focused learning, where children learn through play. Research shows that children learn when directly engaged in hands on activities with people and resources. At Bambinos Kindergarten Caringbah, the Early Years Learning Framework outcomes, principles and practices are used in guiding children to become confident learners through a holistic, high quality care environment. Transition to school is directed through the preschool program, with a focus on: - Self help and life skills - PALS Program (focus on life skills such as greeting
others, dealing with feelings, social situations, sharing and listening) - Project focus and experimentation – Mathematics - Language & Literacy - Pre writing skills. In short, the right option comes down to the needs of the parent. Long Day Care Centres cater for the ‘working parent’, offering longer opening hours, and can be open up to 51 weeks of the year. Preschools may be better suited to the non working parent as they are generally open from 9am to 3pm and are closed during school holiday periods. Brittany Downs, Bambinos Kindergarten

WALKING WITH KIDS THERE’S NO NEED TO RUN A MARATHON. ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS TO INCORPORATE ACTIVITY INTO YOUR CHILD’S ROUTINE IS TO TAKE REGULAR WALKS TOGETHER. You can walk to school, child care or kinder (look for parks along the way). You can even start when your child is a baby. Young babies can go on outings in a sling, carrier or pram. As they become toddlers, encourage them to walk some of the way. Use your child's age to tailor the route and the length of time spent walking – allow around 1 km per birthday. That is, a three-year-old can walk up to 3 km, with rest breaks. Walking to school every day has many benefits for children, parents and communities, including: Improved fitness of parents and children. Maintenance of a healthy weight. The opportunity to learn and practice road rules and
32
road safety. Increased awareness of surroundings and involvement in the neighbourhood. Improved observation skills. When children who walk to school draw pictures of their journey they tend to draw people and things from the environment. Kids who are driven to school draw cars. The chance for children and parents to talk and spend time together. Social opportunities such as meeting neighbours along the route and chatting with other parents at the school gate. You can expand the range of the walks by following nature trails in parks and by taking trips to interesting locations. If your child is really resistant to walking, think about getting a pet as an incentive. By Melisa George

One of the key points we’d like to make about the present market is that there is somewhat of a disconnection between media reports, buyers’ opinions of the market and actual activity. Firstly, most of the media have all cannons firing and advising that the market is performing above expectations, confidence is back and boom times are coming. All of our discussions with active buyers paint a different picture, with most suggesting they feel comfortable in the market but are certainly taking a very sensible approach to the buying process. Many buyers we have spoken with are moving for a specific reason, whether it is upgrading to accommodate a growing family or seeking something they simply can’t create with their existing home.
www.localimages.com.au
The April/May property market continued to hold firm across our local area. We witnessed strong buyer attendances at open homes, increasing turnover at the top end of the market. Our clearance rate averaged an impressive 90% compared to Sydney’s overall average hovering around 75%.
Some interesting data from the RBA is that Australians are paying down their home loan debt at a rate faster than ever seen before. In fact, new Reserve Bank of Australia figures show borrowers are a record 14 per cent ahead of the $1.14 trillion invested in Australian home loans. Could this be the return of a ‘Baby Boomer’ mentality? With the cash rate at an all-time low and the financial institutions passing on the reduction, now is a good time to pay down debt (if you haven't already started doing so). As we head into the cooler months of the year, we envisage present conditions will remain similar. It is typical to see less property available through winter; however, as the last several years have shown, we do record excellent buyer interest and generally strong activity. There will be some very good upgrading opportunities available for buyers, so we strongly recommend keeping an eye on the market. With the improved confidence in the market right now, many patient sellers who have been holding out for the past several years are now entering the market. Ben Southwell

Taxing Times In an ominous sign for the government, more than half of Australians now believe they pay too much tax, up from 44 per cent two years ago. The centre pieces of the budget, the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Gonski education reforms, are losing support. Only 40 per cent of those surveyed believe the government should spend more on social security, down from nearly 70 per cent. Support for increased spending on education has slipped from 96 per cent to 75 per cent. Asked if they would be prepared to pay more tax to support Gonski style education reforms, 94 per cent of people surveyed said no. Whatever your political beliefs, the old maxim that there are “two certainties in life: death and taxes” rings true as we now head toward the end of the financial year. Generally you pay income tax during the year as you earn it. If you are an employee your employer

The more you earn, the higher your rate of tax. At the end of the income year (30 June), most people need to lodge an annual income tax return to tell the tax office how much income they received, tax they paid, and any deductions or offsets. If you are an employee, most of this information will be on a payment summary that your employer gives you. You have until 31 October to lodge your income tax return (unless you have it prepared by a registered tax agent).

Hard Lines NOT TOO LONG AGO, CHOOSING WHICH FISHING LINE TO USE WAS A pretty straight forward exercise. Work out roughly what strength you needed and then decide between the half a dozen different brands on offer. These days you need a degree in advanced chemistry to decipher the range on offer. Monofilament, co-polymer, braid, gel spun polyethylene, fluorocarbon, the list goes on. So which line should you choose? Monofilament is a fancy name given to the nylon line that we have used for years. Easy to tie strong knots in, yet easy to untangle, has a fair degree of stretch which acts as a shock absorber when you hook a big fish. A great all-rounder, co-polymer lines are similar, but stronger per unit. Braid and gel spun lines are multi-fibre lines that are purpose designed to have next to no stretch. Great for feeling timid bites, particularly in deep water. Their low
stretch is also helpful when working lures, as all flicks of the rod are imparted in full to the lure. Shortcomings are price and they can be difficult to tie knots in. Fluorocarbon, whist expensive is a great addition to your rig. Virtually invisible when in water, it is a great line to use from your swivel to your hook, helping to fool wary fish. Does require special knots, but well worth using. The average fisho needs nothing fancier than good quality mono with a fluorocarbon leader of appropriate strength. As for colour, don’t get me started.

Grooming My Dog
PETS ARE A BIT LIKE CHILDREN: THEY NEED CARE. IF YOU CAN’T LOOK AFTER THEM, DON’T HAVE THEM. REGULAR GROOMING WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD CARING FOR YOUR PET. THIS ISSUE WE LOOK AT EAR CARE.
Ear Grooming To clean the ears, pour ear cleaner in each ear, give them a good ear massage, and then let the dog shake (repeat if anything yucky is in the ears). If there is any heavy secretion call your vet. A dog’s ears should be like a human’s ears, clean and free of secretion and odor. Clean with a drying agent after each bath, in case you have water in the ears. This helps to dry it out. Try not to get dirty bath water in the ears. Always rinse the head with clean running water. If the head is heavily soiled, pinch the ears shut while rinsing off the dirt,
or put cotton balls in each ear. You do not want dirt running into the ears. First put the dog on your lap in a comfy position, and pat them to get them calm. Then lift the ear and fold back. Pluck excess hair from the ears using your fingers or tweezers. Be gentle so as not to hurt your dog, and never pull large clumps of hair. The trick is to pull as few as possible at a time, so you do not hurt your dog. Use your fingers or even surgeon forceps. Next issue: Eye care.

Something Fishy with Saltwater Aquariums! An empty tank of saltwater will support a small species of local marine fish. The waste produced will support cultures of bacteria which will grow on the glass of the aquarium and break down the waste from the fish. The problems start once you add more fish. More fish means more food. More food means more waste. The natural capacity of the bacteria and algae that grow on the glass will be inadequate to breakdown the waste. It will create toxic conditions which will kill the fish. Nature is all about balance. All aquarists understand this natural balance. Oxygen will allow bacteria to work much faster at breaking down the waste. The oxygen level of an aquarium is increased by anything that causes the water surface to be broken such as an air stone
or water pumps. The larger the surface area the more bacteria you can grow. Growing more bacteria allows for more fish. Decorating your empty saltwater aquarium with live rock and coral sand will give you a massive surface area for bacteria to grow. Water rich in oxygen from pumps will have an amazing capacity to support fish. You now have a fair amount of fish to be fed, living in oxygen-rich water. Food is eaten by the fish and organic waste is produced. This waste is then consumed by micro-organisms, algae and bacteria. There is no end to what is possible in this hobby but don’t forget that it is all about balance. Paul Talbot
