Mass with Anointing of the Sick
Tuesday 2 August
MASSWITHANOINTINGOFTHESICK
When you speak to any pilgrim who has been to Lourdes on our Annual Diocesan Pilgrimage, most will tell you that one of the highlights is Mass with the Anointing of the Sick. The origin of anointing and prayers for strength to accept sickness dates back to Jesus’ time. In the Gospels we find many references to Jesus caring for the sick and disabled and it was good that He gave special attention to them. You will recall the story of the paralytic, where Jesus said “Your sins are forgiven” “But to prove to you that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins” - He said to the paralytic - “Get up and pick up your bed and go off home” (Matthew 9:3, 6-8). “TheApostles set off to preach repentance and they anointed many sick peoplewithoil.” (Mark 6:12-15). Also, onmanyoccasionsHewould say to those calling for help “Do you believe?” You will recall the leper who came to Jesus after sunset – “If it be your will, you have power to make me clean”. Jesus was moved to pity, held out His hand and touched him and said “I will, be clean.” (Mark 1:40-45). Note that the leper said “If it be your will”. Jesus knows what is best for us. He taught us in the ‘Our Father’ – “Thy will be done”. “Is there a man among you who would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread, or a snake for a fish? If you know to give your children what is good, how much more will your Father in Heaven give good things to those who love Him” (Matthew 7:9-11). In his agony in the garden of Gethsemane, He prayed “Abba (Father) everything is possible for you –take this cup away from me; but let it be as you, not I, would have it.” (Mark 14:36). When at home, struggling to be faithful members of the Church, or here in Lourdes awaiting to receive the Sacrament, we must try and pray for the graces to accept God’s will in every day of our lives. God will answer our prayers for good health and relief from pain, in His own way and time and in the way best for each of us. Prayer for each other is the best gift for us all now, on our Pilgrimage and when we go back home.
Who may receive the Sacrament ofAnointing? Certainly all those who have been baptised; have reached the use of reason; those who are seriously unwell or profoundly disabled; those who are very elderly, or extremely frail.
During the Anointing, all receiving the Sacrament can be assured of a remembrance in prayer by all pilgrims. It is an added blessing to receive the Sacrament during Mass celebrated by Bishop Richard and the priests. If you have any queries, speak to your Chaplain or Deacon; your leaders will keep you informed about the celebration.
The Rite ofAnointing The Liturgy for Anointing is well prepared and celebrated. The Bishop and priests lay their hands, in silence, on the heads of those to be anointed; prayers and blessing of oil follows; then the Sign of the Cross with the oil on the foreheads “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit” and the hands “May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up”.
How should you be prepared? Have Faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is a special gift; treasure it through prayer when you go to Mass, visit the Grotto and take part in the daily celebrations. Pray to accept God’s will for you here in Lourdes and at home. It is good to be reconciled – to confess and receive absolution. Our young helpers are an inspiration to us; they look so happy to be helpers. Smile with them!! It is important to invite them to pray with you and for you.
Bernadette said “My vocation is that of being sick”.

Penitential Act Missa “Orbis Factor”
Please sing the phrases in bold: You were sent to heal the contrite of heart: Kyrie, eleison, Kyrie, eleison, Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison. You came to call sinners: Christe, eleison, Christe, eleison, Christe, Christe, eleison. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us: Kyrie, eleison, Kyrie, eleison, Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory! Lord, God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Refrain Lord, Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, have mercy on us. Refrain For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory God, the glory of God the Father. Amen. Refrain

Reading James 5:13 - 16 If any one of you is in trouble, he should pray; if anyone is feeling happy, he should sing a psalm. If one of you is ill, he should send for the elders of the church, and they must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. So confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, and this will cure you; the heartfelt prayer of a good man works very powerfully.
Psalm Be with me, Lord Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble, be with me, Lord, I pray.
1. You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, Most High, who abide in the shadow of our God, say to the Lord, “My refuge and fortress, the God in whom I trust.” 2. No evil shall befall you, no pain come near, for his angels stand close by your side, Guarding you always and bearing you gently, watching over your life. 3. Those who cling to the Lord live secure in his love, lifted high those who trust in his name, call on the Lord, he will never forsake you, he will bring you salvation and joy.
Marty Haugen
Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia I am the light of the world, says the Lord. Anyone who follows me will have the light of life. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Gospel Luke 18: 35 - 43 Now as he drew near to Jericho there was a blind man sitting at the side of the road begging. When he heard the crowd going past he asked what was it was all about, and they told him that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by. So he called out ‘Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me’. The people in front scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he shouted all the louder, ‘Son of David, have pity on me’. Jesus stopped and ordered them to bring the man to him, and when he came up, asked him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Sir,’ he replied ‘let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.’ And instantly his sight returned and he followed him praising God, and all the people who saw it gave praise to God for what had happened.

Cantor: Give life and health to our brothers and sisters on whom we lay our hands in your name: Lord, have mercy. People: Lord, have mercy.
In silence the priests lay their hands on the head of each sick person.
Prayer over the Blessed Oil Please repeat the phrase in bold after the Cantor.
Celebrant: Praise to you, God, the almighty Father. You sent your Son to live among us and bring us salvation. People: Blessed be God who heals us in Christ. Celebrant: Praise to you, God, the only-begotten Son. You humbled yourself to share in our humanity, and you heal our infirmities. People: Blessed be God who heals us in Christ. Celebrant: Praise to you, God, the Holy Spirit, the Consoler. Your unfailing power gives us strength in our bodily weakness. People: Blessed be God who heals us in Christ. Celebrant: God of mercy, ease the sufferings and comfort the weakness of your servants whom the Church anoints with this holy oil. We ask this through Christ our Lord. People: Amen.
The Anointing The priests anoint each sick person in their group with the blessed oil. First they anoint the forehead, saying: Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. The sick person responds: Amen. Then they anoint the hands, saying: May the Lord who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up. The sick person responds: Amen.
During the Anointing of the Sick we will sing the following, as time permits:
Anointing If anyone is thirsty
1. If anyone is thirsty, let them come to me and drink. Let them come to me believing, Let them come to me and drink.
For I am your brother, and I am your Lord, and I will give new life, I will give you my Spirit and you will be free. Yes, I will give you life.
2. If anyone is hungry, let them come to me for bread. Let them come and taste the joy of Heaven. Let them come to me for bread.
3. If anyone’s in darkness, let them come to me for light. Let them follow where I’m leading, let them come to me for light.
4. If anyone is anxious, let them come to me for peace. Let them come to know my Spirit’s comfort, let them come to me for peace.
5. If anyone is dying, let them come to me for life. Let them come to know the Father’s promise, let them come to me for life.
Damian Lundy
Anointing How deep the Father’s Love for us
How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss The Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything, No gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer; But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom.
Stuart Townend
Anointing There is a longing There is a longing in our hearts, O Lord, for you to reveal yourself to us. There is a longing in our hearts for love we only find in you, our God.
1. For justice, for freedom, for mercy: hear our prayer. In sorrow, in grief: be near, hear our prayer, O God. 2. For wisdom, for courage, for comfort: hear our prayer. In weakness, in fear: be near, hear our prayer, O God. 3. For healing, for wholeness, for new life: hear our prayer. In sickness, in death: be near, hear our prayer, O God. 4. Lord save us, take pity, light in our darkness. We call you, we wait: be near, hear our prayer, O God.
Anne Quigley
Anointing We cannot measure (to the tune of Ye banks and braes)
1. We cannot measure how you heal or answer every suffr’s prayer, yet we believe your grace responds where faith and doubt unite to care. Your hands, though bloodied on the cross, survive to hold and heal and warn, to carry all through death to life and cradle children yet unborn.
2. The pain that will not go away, the guilt that clings from things long past, the fear of what the future holds, are present as if meant to last. But present too is love which tends the hurt we never hoped to find, the private agonies inside, the memories that haunt the mind.
3. So some have come who need your help and some have come to make amends, as hands which shaped and saved the world are present in the touch of friends. Lord, let your Spirit meet us here to mend the body, mind and soul, to disentangle peace from pain and make your broken people whole.
John L. Bell and Graham Maule
Anointing
In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My comforter, my all in all Here, in the love of Christ, I stand
In Christ alone, who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones he came to save 'Til on that cross, as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin, on him, was laid Here, in the death of Christ, I live
There in the ground, his body lay Light of the world, by darkness, slain Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave, he rose again And as he stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me For I am his and he is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No power of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from his hand 'Til he returns or calls me home Here, in the power of Christ, I stand In Christ Alone
Prayer after anointing
Celebrant: Let us pray, Father in heaven, through this holy anointing grant our brothers and sisters comfort in their suffering. When they are afraid, give them courage, when afflicted, give them patience, when dejected, afford them hope, and when alone, assure them of the support of your holy people. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.

Time for Individual Prayer There is now an opportunity for anyone who wishes to approach a priest or deacon for a brief time of individual prayer for a specific intention.
During this time we will sing the following as time permits:
O Changeless Christ O changeless Christ, for ever new, who walked our earthly ways, still draw our hearts as once you drew the hearts of other days.
As once you spoke by plain and hill or taught by shore and sea, so be today our teacher still, O Christ of Galilee.
As wind and storm their master heard and his command fulfilled, may troubled hearts receive your word, the tempest-tossed be stilled.
And as of old who prayed your healing hand was shown, so be your touch upon us laid, unseen but not unknown.
In broken bread, in wine outpoured, your new and living way proclaim to us, O risen Lord, O Christ of this our day.
O changeless Christ, till life is past your blessing still be given; then bring us home, to taste at last the timeless joys of heaven.
Timothy Dudley-Smith
Recessional Lord you give the Great Commission
1. Lord, You give the great commission: ‘Heal the sick and preach the Word’. Lest the Church neglect its mission, and the Gospel go unheard, help us witness to Your purpose with renewed integrity.
With the Spirit’s gifts empower us For the work of ministry.
2. Lord, You call us to Your service: ‘In my name baptise and teach’. That the world may trust your promise, life abundant meant for each, give us all new fervour, draw us closer in community.
3. Lord, You make the common holy: ‘This my body, this my blood’. Let us all, for earth’s true glory, daily lift life heavenward, asking that the world around us share your children’s liberty.
4. Lord, You show us love’s true measure: ‘Father, what they do, forgive’. Yet we hoard as private treasure all that you so freely give. May your care and mercy lead us to a just society.
5. Lord, you bless with words assuring: ‘I am with you to the end’. Faith and hope and love restoring, may we serve as you intend, and, amid the cares that claim us, hold in mind eternity.

Reading Genesis 3: 9 – 15. 20 After Adam had eaten of the tree, the Lord God called to him. ‘Where are you?’ he asked. ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden,’ he replied. ‘I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.’ ‘Who told you that you were naked?’ he asked. ‘Have you been eating of the tree I forbade you to eat?’ The man replied, ‘It was the woman you put me with; she gave me the fruit, and I ate it.’ Then the Lord God asked the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’ The replied, ‘The serpent tempted me and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this,
‘Be accursed beyond all cattle, all wild beasts.
You shall crawl on your belly and eat dust every day of your life.
I will make you enemies of each other: you and the woman, your offspring and her offspring.
It will crush your head and you will strike its heel.’ The man named his wife ‘Eve’ because she was the mother of all those who live.
Psalm Here I am Lord, I come to do your will. Here I am Lord, I come to do your will. 40
1. You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I. 2. In the scroll of the book it stands written that I should do your will. Gospel Luke 1: 26 – 38 The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you,’ the angel answered, ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.’ ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord,’ said Mary, ‘let what you have said be done to me.’ And the angel left her.

Recessional O Purest of Creatures 1. O Purest of creatures, sweet Mother, sweet maid, The one spotless womb wherein Jesus was laid! Dark night hath come down on us, Mother! and we Look out for thy shining, sweet Star of the Sea! 2. Deep night hath come down on this rough-spoken world, And the banners of darkness are boldly unfurled; And the tempest-tossed Church, all her eyes are on thee; They look to thy shining, sweet Star of the Sea! 3. He gazed on thy soul, it was spotless and fair, For the empire of sin it had never been there; None ever had owned thee, dear Mother, but He. And He blest thy clear shining, sweet Star of the Sea! 4. Earth gave Him one lodging; t'was deep in thy breast, And God found a home where the sinner finds rest; His home and His hiding-place both were in thee, He was won by thy shining, sweet Star of the Sea! 5. Oh, blissful and calm was the wonderful rest That thou gavest thy God in they virginal breast; For the heaven he left found heaven in thee, And he shone in thy shining, sweet star of the sea.

WEDNESDAY EVENING
Extended evening prayer for the last night
Leader: For our prayer this evening we have two activities. Together we will look back over the week and then look ahead to our return home. Please follow on at page 127 in your pilgrimage handbook.
Activity one- looking back over the week.
Leader: Pope Francis has asked the whole Church to engage in a Synod process. He asks us to take time to ENCOUNTER God, LISTEN to each other and DISCERN. This evening is an opportunity to look back over our time together on pilgrimage, the encounters and listening which we have experienced and engage with what God is saying to us. 1. In twos or threes spend 20mins or so looking at the questions below. (You may want to use the space next to the questions to write your thoughts which you can then look back on during the coming year.) 2. Read each question together, spend a quiet moment thinking about your week and then if you would like to, share your thoughts in answer to the question. 3. There is no need to comment on or agree with what is being said, we will all have experienced the week differently. Simply allow each other space to share this time of reflection without remark. Just listen. 4. There is no need to share unless you are comfortable to do so. If you do share, ask the Holy Spirit to guide your words. We begin by listening to the word of God. Here is a short extract from today’s Gospel reading.

Reader: Luke 1:30 ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen!
Questions in groups of 2 or 3 people for 20mins During this week of pilgrimage: What have I discovered? What have I received from others? Where have experienced joy, peace, good, love, God? Where was I challenged? Where was I disappointed? What helped me? Where have I experienced a growth in faith? Who would I like to say thank you to? What would I like to say to God about the pilgrimage?
Prayer (At the end of this time of reflection say a prayer together as a whole group, the Hail Mary, Our Father, or another prayer or song.) Time of Silence to listen to God’s voice (Together listen to God as you have listened to each other.)
Activity two- ‘go tell the priests…’
Leader: The theme of 2022 here in Lourdes is ‘go tell the priests…’ Our Lady spoke these words to Bernadette. Our Lady was asking Bernadette to do something unexpected. Bernadette was required to act with courage, not to give up in false humility believing herself to be unworthy of the task. She needed to trust. The priest who first heard from Bernadette the words of ‘The Lady’ needed to be humble enough to listen.
This phrase ‘Go and tell the priests…’ is the start of Our Lady’s request to St Bernadette to tell the priests to build a church and for the people to come in procession. When you hear this phrase where do your thoughts go? We have quotations to hear from a group of people who could be described as being on the margins. (Pass the cards out to people who are willing to read them.) We will now listen as a few in our group voice the reflections of others:
The first group of quotations responds to the phrase: • The Lady told Bernadette to go tell the priests… (Quotations are read) The second group responds to: • If the lady told me to go and priests… (Quotations are read) The third group of quotations: • For me today… (Quotations are read) Leader: It can be easy to be distant from our priests, we may use excuses, for example: • He is very busy I do not want to bother him. • We will argue, I do not like what he says. • I have nothing important enough to say, I am not a saint. • I do not see any need to be known by the priest. • He would not recognise me or want to talk to me, I don’t really go to the church much these days. In a moment of quiet, ask God what message, if any, you are called to take home to your priest from the Grotto, from your time here in Lourdes. Time of silence
Leader: As we bring to a close this time of looking to our return home, perhaps consider whether it would be possible for you to spend time talking with, especially listening to, your priest at home? We end this second activity with Our Lady’s song The Magnificat (page 173).

DAILY PRAYERS
Leader: O God, come to our aid.
All: O Lord, make haste to help us.
Leader: O God, as we gather here in your presence, may our hearts be open to your word in scripture and in the depth of our being. (Silence is kept)
Leader: Our Lady said to Bernadette, ‘Go and tell the priests…’
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12: 4 - 7
Reader: There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working is all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose.
Leader: The word of the Lord
All: Thanks be to God
All: Our Lady said to Bernadette, ‘Go and tell the priests…’ (Silence is kept)
Reflection Have you thought about your gifts this pilgrimage? Have discovered anything new about who you are and what you are capable of doing, for yourself, for others? Have you noticed the gifts of others this pilgrimage? Gifts of kind words, patience or joy? Take a moment to think about the gifts that have become apparent during this time of pilgrimage.
Intercessions
Leader: we offer our prayers for those people and situations on our hearts at this time. We pray aloud or in silence.
Closing prayer All: O God, be with us as we journey together through this pilgrimage, May the special grace we encounter here in Lourdes, the out-pouring of your love, inspire us throughout our lives. As we learn to encounter, listen, and together, help us to constantly search for your grace, for your love, wherever we find ourselves. So that, like the priests here in Lourdes, we may respond to your call, in humility and trust. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Leader: Our Lady of Lourdes, All: Pray for us. Leader: St Bernadette, All: Pray for us. Leader: All holy men and women, All: Pray for us. Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Reading 1 Corinthians 12:3- 7 No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ unless he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit. There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working is all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose.
Psalm Send forth your spirit Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth.
1. Bless the Lord, O my soul, O Lord how great you are! How many are your works, O Lord, the earth is full of your riches!
2. You take back your Spirit they die, back to the dust from which they came: you send forth your Spirit they are created, the whole earth is renewed!
3. Your glory will last forever, may you rejoice in all your works. May my soul be pleasing to you, I find my joy in you, Lord.

Gospel John 20: 19 - 22 In the evening of the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’, and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. ‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’ after saying this he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’

Recessional Sing a new Church 1. Summoned by the God who made us rich in our diversity, Gathered in the name of Jesus, richer still in unity: Refrain Let us bring the gifts that differ and, in splendid, varied ways, sing a new Church into being one in faith and love and praise. 2. Radiant risen from the water, robed in holiness and light, Male and female in God’s image, male and female, God’s delight. Refrain 3. Trust the goodness of creation: trust the Spirit strong within, Dare to dream the vision promised sprung from seed of what has been. Refrain 4. Bring the hopes of ev’ry nation; bring the art of ev’ry race. Weave a song of peace and justice; let it sound through time and space. Refrain 5. Draw together at one table all the human family; Shape a circle ever wider and a people ever free. Refrain
