ince beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president on Jan. 1, 2009, Mark P. Becker has launched a major strategic planning initiative focused on positioning the university, as it sets its sights on its second century, to become one of the nation’s premier urban universities. Embracing its commitments to recognized excellence in education and research, as well as its unique location in and commitment to Atlanta, the university is poised to rise to new levels of accomplishment and impact. Under Becker’s leadership, GSU in 2011 approved and began implementation of its 10-year Strategic Plan, whose mission is to position Georgia State “as a dynamic academic community where teaching and research combine to produce leaders and create solutions to conquer the challenges of the 21s century.” In 2010 Becker oversaw the launching of the Second Century Initiative for faculty excellence, most often referred to as “2CI.” This initiative is recruiting 100 additional faculty members to Georgia State over five years to build internationally recognized scholarly strength and critical mass in areas of priority. Seeking to recognize the importance and influence of international commerce and technology for Georgia State students and researchers, Becker has worked to enhance Georgia State Uni-

versity’s global reach, the cornerstone of which was the opening of GSU’s Confucius Institute in 2010, a partnership with the Beijing Language and Culture University and one of the first business-oriented Confucius Institutes in the United States. In addition, Becker leads a diverse university whose undergraduate academic profile continues to rise, and a number of the university’s excellent graduate programs enjoy strong national rankings. Becker also has overseen a number of physical improvements and enhancements including: the opening of the Parker H. “Pete” Petit Science Center; the university’s first freshman housing and dining complex, to be followed by the Piedmont North housing and dining complex coming on line this fall; the construction of on-campus Greek housing; and the purchasing of land for future growth and expansion in downtown Atlanta. Prior to his appointment to Georgia State, Becker served as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Before assuming that role, Becker spent three years at the University of Minnesota as a biostatistics professor, dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health, Preparedness and Emergency Response.

From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University and his doctorate in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University. Active in the Atlanta community, Becker is a member of the Central Atlanta Progress Executive Committee; Atlanta Committee for Progress Board of Directors; Georgia Aquarium Board; Woodruff Arts Center Board of Trustees; Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Research Alliance Board of Trustees; Commerce Club Operating Board; ARCHE (Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education) Board; the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities Board of Directors; and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta Board of Directors. During his career, Becker has been involved in several professional associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Biometric Society and the American Statistical Association, where he is a fellow. He has been principal investigator on research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and he has published extensively in leading journals of medicine, public health, and statistics. Becker has served on a number of editorial boards, was co-editor of Sociological Methodology, and was a guest editor for Sociological Methods and Research and for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Becker and his wife, Laura Voisinet, have two grown children, Matthew and Julia.

harged with leading Georgia State University athletics in an era of unprecedented growth, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick is changing the face of Panther athletics with the historic launch of Georgia State football and the development of the overall program. Under Levick’s leadership, the inaugural football season of 2010 was an unqualified success as the first-year team posted a winning record on the field while averaging nearly 17,000 fans for home games at the Georgia Dome. As a result, Georgia State received tremendous positive exposure, both locally and nationally. Levick’s first two-plus years on the job have been marked by dramatic upgrades in facilities and fund-raising. Annual giving to the Panther Athletic Club has increased more than ten-fold, and the two largest gifts in the history of GSU athletics have been secured. Construction projects include the GSU Football Practice Complex, new facilities for strength and conditioning and sports medicine, and upgrades to every venue used by the Panthers. Her forward thinking is evident in her reorganization of the GSU Athletics Association and the ambitious, six-year strategic plan she has developed for the future of Georgia State athletics. With Levick at the helm, Georgia State’s athletic programs are rising in stature in the Colonial Athletic Association. Since her arrival, GSU has claimed six CAA team titles and 16 individual conference crowns while boasting nine CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees. GSU student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom, maintaining a cumulative grade point average over 3.0 while completing more than 5,000 hours of community service in 2010-11. With a resume of experience and success at prestigious athletics programs across the nation, Levick came to Georgia

State in March 2009 from the University of Maryland, where she served as chief of staff/ executive senior athletic director, overseeing daily management of the 27-sport program. Her impressive career includes seven years as director of athletics at Santa Clara University and Saint Louis University as well as nearly two decades in senior administrative positions at Maryland and Stanford University and stints with the Pacific 10 Conference and the NCAA headquarters. Levick was named the 2001 Division I Athletic Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). In 2005-06, she received the General Sports TURF Systems Athletic Director of the Year Award for the NCAA Division I Central Region, and she was recognized in both 1998 and 1999 as one of the nation’s Top 25 Female Sports Executives by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal. She is a past president of the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association. Before going to Maryland in 2007, she served three years (2004-07) as director of athletics at Saint Louis, where she led the transition from Conference USA to the Atlantic 10 Conference and served as the lead fund-raiser for a new $80 million on-campus arena and practice complex. In 2006, she received the Carl O. Bauer Award as the top amateur sports figure in the St. Louis area. Levick also spent four years (2000-04) as director of athletics and recreation at Santa Clara University, where she oversaw a major renovation of the school’s basketball arena. The Broncos’ women’s soccer team captured the 2001 national championship, still the only NCAA title in school history. Prior to Santa Clara, Levick worked 12 years at Stanford as senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She served as the primary administrator for

The Colonial Athletic Association continues to build on its reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically. The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 22 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2010-11, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 21 teams in 12 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2011. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 23 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2010-11, 25 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 50 student-athletes received All-America honors in 13 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past five years. Three CAA teams earned NCAA Tournament berths for the first time in 2011 as conference champion Old Dominion was joined by VCU and George Mason.VCU knocked off USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top-seeded Kansas, while Mason defeated Villanova. The Rams were ranked No. 6 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the high-

est ranking ever for a CAA team. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, posting victories over Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. Six CAA women’s basketball teams advanced to postseason play in 2011. James Madison represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its second straight conference championship. Delaware, Drexel, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion and VCU participated in the WNIT, with the Seahawks advancing to the second round. ODU, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. At least two women’s soccer teams have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons and William & Mary gave the CAA a team in the final 16 of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship for the sixth time in the last nine years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary advanced to the NCAA Championship for the 12th straight year and finished 19th overall. In the pool, Towson’s Meredith Budner finished as the runner-up in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle at the 2011 NCAA Championship and received All-America honors along with George Mason’s Ashley Danner. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship in the past decade. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 14 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the eight of the last nine Major League Baseball drafts. The conference boasts numerous All-Americans in lacrosse, tennis, golf, track and field, women’s lacrosse and wrestling. Commissioner Thomas E.Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current membersGeorge Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.

n his second season at Georgia State, Chris England was elevated to Interim Director of Cross Country and Track and Field in July 2011. In addition to his roles as head cross country coach and distance coach for the track team, England oversees the administration of the programs, including budget, scheduling, recruiting, travel and development. England came to Georgia State as head cross country coach in March 2010 after serving three seasons in the same role at Murray State University.

He has been instrumental in bringing about the return of the GSU Cross Country Invitational, this time to Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga., and in hosting the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships for the first time since the Panthers joined the league in 2005. His first season with the GSU cross country program in 2010 was highlighted by a pair of season-opening victories by both the men’s and women’s teams at the Struts JSU Opener and the GSU Invitational. Under England’s guidance, sophomore Katharine Showalter earned AllCAA honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the second year in a row during the 2011 outdoor track and field season. England’s distance runners helped Murray State to third-place showings at both the indoor and outdoor conference track and field championships in 2009. In 2009, England coached the OVC Athlete of the Year for both indoor and outdoor track in Katelyn Jones (indoor) and Taylor Crawford (outdoor). Crawford was additionally honored as the top female athlete at the indoor and outdoor championship meets, and both runners qualified for the 2009 NCAA regionals. Jones was previously named OVC Freshman of the Year for indoor track in 2008. Before his stint at Murray State, England served as an assistant to the head cross country coach at his alma mater, The Ohio State University. In addition to working with numerous Big Ten champions and Olympic hopefuls, he served as meet manager for the Jesse Owens Classic and director for the Ohio State Cross Country Camp. England previously worked at the University of Wyoming as a graduate assistant in the athletics department, and then at Boise State University, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams.

Junior Katherine Showalter (left) and sophomore Anna Sinclair (right) were two top performers for the Panthers in 2010.

H

ead Coach Chris England and Assistant Coach Lauren Blankenship enter their second season in control of the Georgia State Cross Country program in 2011. “Last year, the team went through a transition,” said England. “They did everything I asked of them and more. This year will about execution as we hope to build on last year’s strong foundation.”

MEN The storyline for the men’s team in 2010 was that of youth and inexperience — of nine runners, seven were freshman and only one, Chris Harper, was an upperclassman. Now a senior, Harper remains the only upperclassmen, but no longer the only veteran.

WOMEN

Twins Brandon and Julian Black, Shyam Kapadia, Chris Manning and Tyler Tomy return as experienced sophomores, looking to improve on the foundations set in 2010.

For the women, ten returning runners balance eight newcomers and provide the Panthers both experience and unprecedented depth.

Tomy was the team’s top finisher in five meets last season, including the CAA Championship and the NCAA Regional. He and Harper will serve as co-captains for the team in 2011.

“At the head of the pack is a strong duo,” said England. “Katherine Showalter and Anna Sinclair battled it out for the top spot last year and traded places practically every week. It was a nice intra-squad rivalry and I hope to see that continue.”

“Tyler Tomy was our top runner almost every meet last year,” said England. “On any given day, Chris Harper will give his best performance.” They are joined by a trio of newcomers — Mill Creek High School standout Austin Boetje and Belgian athletes Pierre Brogniet and Valentin Poncelet. Poncelet comes to GSU after one year at American International University in Easton, Mass., where he was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year.

Showalter will pace fellow juniors Alison Bishop and Kelsey Spinks. Showalter took the individual title in last year’s Struts JSU Opener and finished second in the GSU Invite. As a freshman, Sinclair was GSU’s top female finisher in the CAA Championship and NCAA Regional and Georgia State Invite individual champion. She leads a sophomore class that also includes Katie Papesh and Jennifer Rubel. Seniors Zanny Anderson, Kacee Houle and Andrea Rodriguez will provide stability and guidance to an impressive pack of newcomers. Anderson and Houle will be the two women’s captains. Joining the women’s squad in 2011 are Betty Chow, Zoila Escorza, Irishnative Niamh Kearney, Ansley Lawson, Sarah McCarthy, senior track athlete Danyel Mitchell, Hannah Stefanoff and Lauren Taronji. “Our women’s team was already deep; now we’re just padding that,” said England. “The incoming freshmen come from very successful high school backgrounds so they are already used to the pressure to perform. We expect them to make an immediate contribution to the team.”

SCHEDULE In 2011, Georgia State will travel to a number of away meets around the southeast including stops in Bishop and Evans, Ga., and Auburn, Troy and Tuscaloosa, Ala. One competition will take the Panthers north to Bethlehem, Pa., as they prepare for the Paul Short Run on the campus of Lehigh University.

Lone senior Chris Harper (front) will lead a young men’s squad in 2011.

In addition to these six away meets, GSU is set to host two home meets on their home course in Hampton, Ga. See the next page for further details. For full schedule and meet details, check page 25.

Panthers To Host Pair of Home Meets in 2011 H

ighlighting the 2011 cross country season are two home meets: the annual Georgia State Invitational and the Colonial Athletic Association championships. “Having home meets are important because it gives our student-athletes a chance to compete in front of their friends, their classmates and their families on their home venue,” said head coach Chris England.

GSU Invite Since 1973, the GSU Invite had run annually in Panthersville. But the event went dormant for two years in 2008 and 2009. When England arrived in 2010 he decided to restart the event, but set it in a new location.

Nash Farm Battlefield is located in Henry County outside of Hampton, Ga., approximately 30 miles south of Atlanta, and is the new home for Georgia State cross country.

The course is a 2 kilometer loop, meaning that the men’s 8K races total four laps and the women’s 5K runs just under three. The return of the meet last season was a success as the Panthers notched team victories by both the men and women. Freshman Anna Sinclair also won the individual title for the women.

All times are Eastern Standard and subject to change. “The GSU Invitational will be a good preview for the conference championship,” said England. “Last year’s home meet was a dry run with several smaller schools. This year is going to be more challenging because many strong Division I programs are coming to participate. It won’t be an easy victory for the Georgia State team, but it will be a good bench mark as we head towards the conference championship meet.”

CAA Championship In addition to the Invitational, the Panthers will play host to their first conference cross country meet in a decade and for the first time since joining the CAA in 2005. In 2001, the men’s team won the Atlantic Sun in Panthersville and the women’s team finished second. That year marked the both last time that GSU has hosted a conference meet and the last time that either team has won a conference crown. Before that, GSU welcomed runners from the Trans America Athletic Conference five times from 1984-98. Both the men and women’s teams finished in eighth place at last year’s CAA championship — an indication of the program’s youth and rebuilding under a new coach. Once again, Anna Sinclair was the top finisher for the women coming in 21st place. Another freshman, Tyler Tomy came in 42nd to pace the men. Both Sinclair and Tomy return for the Panthers in 2011 and hope to replicate their early success during their sophomore campaigns. “I want to begin making a name for ourselves in the conference,” said England. “Even if we don’t win our conference championship this year, we will turn a lot of heads.”

2010 Year-In Review PANTHERS

“Both teams can be proud of how they have matured throughout the season. With a new coach, system and many new faces, change can make for a difficult transition.” — Coach Chris England

T

he Georgia State cross country teams’ first season under head coach Chris England was highlighted by a pair of seasonopening victories by both the men and the women at the JSU Strut’s Opener and the GSU Invitational. At the JSU Strut’s Opener, the Panthers were paced by a pair of individual winners. Junior Chris Harper won the meet on the men’s side, while sophomore Katharine Showalter claimed the women’s crown. Both teams also notched victories the next week when they hosted the Georgia State Invitational. Freshman Anna Sinclair also earned the individual title for the women. The meet, held at the Nash Farm Battlefield in Henry County, returned following a two-year break. The Invitational was a school tradition run annually since 1973.

Senior Caitlin Price led the way in the Clemson Classic before sitting out the remainder of the season with injury. The 2008 AllCAA performer also took a medical redshirt in 2009.

Youth and inexperience was the make-up of both teams in 2010.

Three seniors including Price, Amy French and Emilie Somerville concluded their careers at Georgia State.

The men’s team returned only one runner from the 2009 squad in Harper, while seven freshmen got their first collegiate experience.

The men graduated no seniors and the lone upperclassman, Harper, will return to run for the Panthers for a final time in 2011.

The squad was led consistently by a trio of Georgia runners in Harper (Marietta HS) and freshmen Carlos Galindo (Collins Hill HS) and Tyler Tomy (Milton HS). Tomy led the squad in five of the seven meets, finishing second in the other two. Galindo was first in one meet, second in two and third in four. Harper finished first in one, second in three and third in three. On the women’s side, Georgians Showalter (St. Nicholas Academy) and Sinclair (North Forsyth HS) finished one or two on the team in virtually every meet. The women got significant contributions from Utah transfer Kacee Houle, track and field athlete Jasmine Love and juniors Zanny Anderson and Alison Bishop.

What the team lacked in experience they made up for with hard work as several members of the two teams earned personal bests throughout the season. Eight members of the two teams saw lower 5K (women) or 8K (men) times, while 11 runners topped their previous career-best in the 6K (women) or 10K (men). Both teams finished eighth at the CAA Championship meet in Wilmington, N.C., and each placed a runner in the top 100 individual competitors at the NCAA South Regional. Freshmen Tomy and Sinclair were the top performers at both post-season meets. Tomy finished 42nd overall in the conference meet and 83rd at the regional. Sinclair took 21st at the CAA and 71st at the regional.

A Brief Sporting History The Georgia State men’s cross country program began in 1964 as one of the school’s first NCAA varsity sports. In 1985, Georgia State began fielding a women’s NCAA cross country team under the tenure and guidance of Coach Bruce LaBudde. The Panthers have captured 10 team conference titles, five by the men’s team and the same number by the women. Eight individual men and 10 women have also won the conference crown for Georgia State. In 2008, Mark Steeds became one of only two Georgia State student-athletes in any sport to be named a first-team All-American when he finished 12th overall in the NCAA Championship. The Panthers have made an additional eight appearances in the NCAA finals, including three trips for Andrew Letherby from 1995-97. Four of GSU’s coaches have earned conference Coach of the Year honors a total of twelve times. Both John Rowland and Jessica Raby took home the award four times each. Rowland, Raby and LaBudde not only coached Georgia State cross country, but also competed for the Panthers. LaBudde was the star of the first cross country team in 1964 and Raby was All-Conference three times. The Georgia State Invitational meet was run annually from 1974-2007 in Panthersville. The meet was revived in 2010 by current head coach Chris England at Nash Farm Battlefield.
