ince beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president on Jan. 1, 2009, Mark P. Becker has launched a major strategic planning initiative focused on positioning the university to become one of the nation’s premier urban universities. Embracing its commitments to recognized excellence in both education and research, as well as its unique location in and commitment to Atlanta, the university is rising to new levels of accomplishment and impact. Under Becker’s leadership, GSU in 2011 approved and began implementation of its 10-year Strategic Plan, whose mission is to position Georgia State “as a dynamic academic community where teaching and research combine to produce leaders and create solutions to conquer the challenges of the 21st century.” In 2010 Becker oversaw the launch of the Second Century Initiative for faculty excellence, or “2CI.” This initiative is recruiting additional faculty members to Georgia State to build internationally recognized scholarly strength and critical mass in areas of priority. Seeking to recognize the importance and influence of international commerce and technology for Georgia State students and researchers, Becker has worked to enhance Georgia State University’s global reach, the cornerstone of which was the

2010 opening of GSU’s Confucius Institute, a partnership with the Beijing Language and Culture University and one of the first business-oriented Confucius Institutes in the United States. In addition, Becker leads a diverse university whose undergraduate academic profile continues to rise, and a number of the university’s excellent graduate programs enjoy strong national rankings. Becker also has overseen a number of physical improvements and enhancements including: the opening of the Parker H. “Pete” Petit Science Center; the university’s first freshman housing and dining complex, the Piedmont North housing and dining complex; the construction of on-campus Greek housing; and the purchasing of land for future growth and expansion in downtown Atlanta. Prior to his appointment to Georgia State, Becker served as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Before assuming that role, Becker spent three years at the University of Minnesota as a biostatistics professor, dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health, Preparedness and Emergency Response. From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor and associate dean for

academic affairs at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University and his doctorate in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University. Active in the Atlanta community, Becker is a member of the Central Atlanta Progress Executive Committee; Atlanta Committee for Progress Board of Directors; Georgia Aquarium Board; Woodruff Arts Center Board of Trustees; Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Research Alliance Board of Trustees; Commerce Club Operating Board; ARCHE (Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education) Board; the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities Board of Directors; and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta Board of Directors. During his career, Becker has been involved in several professional associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Biometric Society and the American Statistical Association, where he is a fellow. He has been principal investigator on research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and he has published extensively in leading journals of medicine, public health, and statistics. Becker has served on a number of editorial boards, was co-editor of Sociological Methodology, and was a guest editor for Sociological Methods and Research and for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Becker and his wife, Laura Voisinet, have two grown children, Matthew and Julia.

n just three years at the helm, Georgia State University Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick has overseen the remarkable transformation of Panther Athletics, from the launch of GSU football to the enhancement of every sports program to the announcement that Georgia State will move to the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2013. Levick presided over the Georgia State football program’s highly successful debut in 2010, and now, after just two seasons, she has the Panthers poised for a jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision, a move that will continue GSU’s ascent to the forefront of college athletics. Her significant imprint extends to the basketball court as she lured successful head coach Ron Hunter, who revitalized GSU basketball in his first season and led the Panthers to their first postseason berth in a decade. Levick’s first three years on the job have also been marked by dramatic upgrades in facilities and fund-raising. Annual giving to the Panther Athletic Club has increased more than ten-fold, and the two largest gifts in the history of GSU athletics have been secured. Construction projects include the GSU Football Practice Complex, new facilities for strength and conditioning and sports medicine, and upgrades to every venue used by the Panthers. And the progress continues. In 2012-13, sand volleyball comes on board as Georgia State’s 19th sport, complete with a state-ofthe-art facility on the GSU campus. The new sand volleyball complex is part of an ambitious Athletics Master Facilities Plan that Levick has developed to address the needs of every sport. One constant amid the change is the success of GSU student-athletes in the classroom as the Panthers maintain a

cumulative grade point average over 3.0 while completing more than 5,000 hours of community service annually. In 2011, Levick was recognized by the SportsBusiness Journal as a “Game Changer” among women in sports business. With a resume of experience and success at prestigious athletics programs across the nation, Levick came to Georgia State in March 2009 from the University of Maryland, where she served as chief of staff/executive senior athletic director, overseeing daily management of the 27-sport program. Her impressive career includes a total of seven years as director of athletics at Santa Clara University and Saint Louis University as well as nearly two decades in senior administrative positions at Maryland and Stanford University and stints with the Pacific 10 Conference and the NCAA headquarters. Levick was named the 2001 Division I Athletic Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). In 2005-06, she received the General Sports TURF Systems Athletic Director of the Year Award for the NCAA Division I Central Region, and she was recognized in both 1998 and 1999 as one of the nation’s Top 25 Female Sports Executives by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal. She is a past president of the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association. Before going to Maryland in 2007, she served three years (2004-07) as director of athletics at Saint Louis, where she led the transition from Conference USA to the Atlantic 10 Conference and served as the lead fundraiser for a new $80 million on-campus arena and practice complex. In 2006, she received the Carl O. Bauer Award as the top amateur sports figure in the St. Louis area. Levick also spent four years (2000-04) as director of athletics and recreation at Santa

Clara University, where she oversaw a major renovation of the school’s basketball arena. The Broncos’ women’s soccer team captured the 2001 national championship, still the only NCAA team title in school history. Prior to Santa Clara, Levick worked 12 years at Stanford as senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She served as the primary administrator for 33 varsity programs that won 44 national championships and six straight Sears Cup titles during her tenure. Levick previously served as assistant commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, assistant director of communications and women’s programs at the NCAA, women’s gymnastics coach and associate athletic director at Slippery Rock University, and assistant gymnastics coach and synchronized swim coach at Indiana University. She began her career at Pattonville Senior High School in St. Louis, Mo., coaching gymnastics and women’s track. Levick is a 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri, and she holds a masters degree in athletic administration from Indiana University. F

ormed in 1976 the Sun Belt Conference quickly rose to the greatest heights of collegiate athletics by sending a team to the NCAA Final Four in the league’s first year of existence. Fast forward 36 years and the league again finds itself at the pinnacle of collegiate athletics as a member of the 11-league alliance of the Bowl Championship Series.

The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history.

During the 2012-13 season the Sun Belt Conference’s membership will consist of Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic, FIU, LouisianaLafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, South Alabama, Troy and Western Kentucky University. Ten of the 11 current Sun Belt members play football at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level.

Since the 2007 football season, the Sun Belt Conference ranks fifth out of the 11 FBS conferences in postseason bowl game winning percentage. In fact, the Sun Belt Conference ranks ahead of noted “Big Six” leagues - the ACC, Pac-12 and the Big Ten. Furthermore, the Sun Belt Conference outpaces its non-automatic qualifying BCS partners in the WAC, Conference USA and the MAC.

As the conference moves forward to the year 2013, the league will be comprised of 12 members with Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana-Lafayette, LouisianaMonroe, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, TexasArlington, Texas State, Troy and Western Kentucky University. The reformatted league will have 10 football playing members of the 12 total members. The league’s new look will feature two evenly matched and geographically logical divisions divided into an East Division and West Division.

The world has taken notice of the Sun Belt Conference as well. Proof of that comes as the league now has two automatic tie-ins to postseason bowl games. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl agreement with the Sun Belt Conference ensures that a Sun Belt team will play in that bowl game through 2013 (the league has sent a team to that game every year since the game’s inception in 2001). The Sun Belt Conference also recently signed an extension with the GoDaddy.com Bowl, played annually in Mobile, Alabama, that will ensure that a Sun Belt team plays in that bowl game through 2017.

Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines.

Over 95 percent of Sun Belt Conference teams earned a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) of over 925 as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its annual APR report recently. The most recent APR scores are based

The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in 2012 that will result in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Fans of the Sun Belt Conference can look forward to seeing more Sun Belt teams playing on national television on ESPN and ESPN2 and additionally the new ESPN deal will result in more coverage on ESPNU. ESPN will continue to televise the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 32nd straight season in 2013, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country.

on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years. The Division I Board of Directors set cut scores of 925 and 900 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible immediate and historical sanctions. In total, 95.2 percent of Sun Belt Conference teams earned a multi-year APR score over 925. Eight institutions had 100 percent of their programs score above the 925 mark, those institutions are: UALR, Denver, Florida Atlantic, LouisianaLafayette, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Troy and Western Kentucky. The league’s APR numbers are up compared to a year ago, as Sun Belt Conference institutions improved from 92.4 percent of all programs hitting the 925 threshold. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include NFL Hall of Fame football player “Mean” Joe Greene (North Texas) former All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former All-Star baseball player Mike Lowell (2007 MLB World Series MVP, FIU), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (LouisianaMonroe) and actor Andy Garcia (FIU). The conference’s first 36 years have also produced numerous individual national champions along with Olympic track medalists including Earl Bell, Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State), Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (FIU). Old Dominion’s Anne Donovan, who received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation’s top women’s basketball player in 1983, helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal in 1984 and helped the Lady Monarchs capture the national championship in 1985.

2012 Season Preview

First Year in Sun Belt Signals Bright Future for GSU

G

eorgia State cross country established itself as a contenders during the 2011 season. The 2012 campaign will focus on continuing that success and gaining solid ground for the future.

That future includes competition in the Sun Belt Conference, which Georgia State helped found in 1976 and will rejoin fully starting in 2013. The conference is allowing 10 sports, including cross country and track, to compete in the Sun Belt a year early. “We appreciate the Sun Belt allowing GSU to enter a year earlier than planned,” said head coach Chris England. “Our goal is to make an immediate impact in our first season in the league.” England enters his third season in charge of the cross country program, a year after taking control of the Panther track and field teams as well. “The experience of all our runners will give us much-needed confidence during the season,” said England. “These student-athletes have all had some great success in the past and we’re all looking forward to both teams continuing their forward progress.”

MEN

“The men’s results at the CAA meet and the Regional were a pleasant surprise to us all,” said England. “Those meets helped us end 2011 on a good note and will hopefully give us good momentum into 2012.” Valentin Poncelet should again be the team’s top runner after earning AllDistrict and All-CAA honors last season. The junior had six top-10 finishes during the season, including individual victories at the Coach “O” and georgia state Cross Country 2012

The other member of the men’s junior class, Tyler Tomy should provide veteran leadership after serving as a co-captain for the squad last season. Tomy placed in the top 20 runners four meets during 2011, including a season-best fourth-place finish in a team victory at the Coach “O” Invite. Following a solid rookie season, Austin Boetje looks to be a major contributor now as a sophomore. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native’s top finish came at the Jaguar Invite, where he finished eighth overall and third on the team. The return of sophomore Carlos Galindo could also boost the men’s chances of success in 2012. Galindo was one of the Panthers’ top competitors as a freshman in 2010. The team also adds two freshmen in Justin Phillip, a Collins Hill High School graduate, and Brookwood’s Trevor Turner.

“The experience of all our runners will give us much-needed confidence during the season.”

The Panthers return three runners from a men’s squad that finished fourth in the CAA and 15th at the NCAA South Regional in 2011. During the season, the team also secured a victory at the Coach “O” Invite and were the runners up at the Jaguar Invite.

The Panthers lost six student-athletes from last season’s team, including four-year letterwinner Chris Harper to graduation.

WOMEN

Nine runners return to a women’s team that placed third at the CAA conference championship and finished first at three other meets during the course of last season. Because of this success, the Panthers earned regular recognition in the USTFCCCA weekly regional rankings. The squad placed from 10th to 12th during the course of the season in the South regional. “This year’s team is made up of all veterans,” said England. “The runners have all been here before and know what they need to do. They will be savvy, eager and motivated to improve on a fantastic 2011 season.” Hannah Stefanoff and Katharine Showalter were the two top runners for the Panthers during last season, both finishing with All-CAA honors.

2012 Season Preview Stefanoff was named the co-CAA Rookie of the Year and earned a schoolrecord five conference Runner of the Week awards. Showalter contributed a strong outdoor track season in the spring of 2012. At the CAA Championships, she won the 3,000m steeplechase and finished second in the 1,500m to score 18 points for the women’s team, which took home third place. The 2011 squad graduated four seniors in Zanny Anderson, Kacee Houle, Danyel Mitchell and Andrea Rodriguez, but replaces the class of 2011 with a group of three seniors this season. Showalter, Alison Bishop and redshirt-senior Kelsey Spinks will be veteran leaders for the women in 2012. Anna Sinclair, Jennifer Rubel and Katie Papesh comprise a strong junior class that should provide depth to the roster. Rubel notched six top 10 finishes in the distance events during the past track and field season, including a fourth-place finish in the 10,000m at the CAA championships. Along with Stefanoff, last year’s rookie class includes Sarah McCarthy and Niamh Kearney. McCarthy turned in a strong cross country rookie campaign while Kearney excelled in mid-distance for the track team.

SCHEDULE The 2012 schedule is highlighted by the return to the Sun Belt Championship meet and the annual GSU Invite, hosted by the Panthers at their home course at Nash Farm Battlefield on Sept. 8. Georgia State will be challenged early and often with the seven-race regular season schedule that starts at the Clemson Invitational on Friday, Aug. 31, then includes the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic in Nashville on Sept. 15 and the top-flight Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. on Oct. 13. “That Clemson opener will be a great experience against some top teams and the meet at Vanderbilt also includes our first look at several Sun Belt teams,” England added. “The Chile Pepper Invitational is one of the biggest meets in the nation and will be a great event for our team to challenge ourselves and do our best.”

2012 GSU Invitational

O

n Sept. 8, 2012, Georgia State will host the 37th installment of the Georgia State Invitational, which was first established by Panther head coach Bruce LaBudde back in 1973.

Since 2010, the GSU Invite has been held at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga., just 30 miles south of GSU’s campus in Atlanta. The historic site was the location of a Civil War battle. Learn more about the site by visiting www.henrycountybattlefield.com. The women’s 4K race starts at 9:00 a.m. with the men’s 6K race to follow at 9:30. The presentation of awards will then take place about 11:00. The meet’s top teams and individuals will be recognized. In the two years that the meet has been held at Nash Farm Battlefield, the women’s race has been won by a Georgia State runner. Even more interesting, both females were freshmen.

GSU will compete in two other area races at the West Georgia Invitational in Carrollton and the Augusta State Jaguar Invitational in Evans, Ga. The women won last year’s Jaguar Invite with the men finishing second behind the host Augusta State team.

Last year, Hannah Stefanoff took the individual title on the Panthers’ home course, while her teammate Anna Sinclair captured the victory the season before in 2010.

The season culminates in the Panthers’ return to the Sun Belt championship meet on Oct. 27. The meet is being held by defending champions Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky.

In addition to the GSU Invite, Georgia State also hosted the 2011 CAA Championships at Nash Farm Battlefield in 2011. The Panthers used the home field advantage to take third place on the women’s side and fourth place for the men.

Both teams will then look towards Tallahassee, Fla. where Florida State will host the NCAA South Regional on Nov. 9. Those who qualify at the Regional meet will earn a spot in the NCAA National Championship on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. A total of eight Panthers have competed in the national meet, most recently Janel Blancett in 2009. n

As always, the event is free and open to the public. All fans are encouraged to come out to the course to see the Panthers run.

2012 Meet Schedule Date Fri., Aug. 31 Sat., Sept. 8 Sat., Sept. 15 Sat., Sept. 22 Fri., Oct. 5 Fri. Oct. 12 Sat., Oct. 27 Sat., Nov. 9 Sat., Nov. 17

Coaching Staff Chris England Head Coach Third Season Ohio State, ’97

E

ntering his third season at Georgia State, Chris England serves as head coach for both the Panther cross country and track and field teams.

England came to Georgia State as head cross country coach in March 2010 after serving three seasons in the same role at Murray State University. He was elevated to interim track and field coach during July 2011 and was promoted to the position permanently in 2012. In the first two seasons under his guidance, the Panther cross country teams have captured six conference Runner of the Week awards, three All-CAA honors, one All-District distinction and the 2011 women’s CAA Rookie of the Year. England revived the dormant GSU Cross Country Invitational in 2010 this time at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga. This was the same course where the Panthers hosted the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships for the first time since the Panthers joined the league in 2005. During his first season in charge of the track and field program, the women’s team took third place at the CAA meet, winning four individual titles and earning eleven All-CAA honors. This included Most Outstanding Track performer Tamara Moore, who finished first in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles. England guided the Murray State women’s cross country program to second place at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009 — the program’s highest finish in nearly two decades. England’s distance runners helped Murray State to third-place showings at both the indoor and outdoor conference track and field championships in 2009. In 2009, England coached the OVC Athlete of the Year for both indoor and outdoor track in Katelyn Jones (indoor) and Taylor Crawford (outdoor). Crawford was additionally honored as the top female athlete at the indoor and outdoor championship meets, and both runners qualified for the 2009 NCAA regionals. Jones was previously named OVC Freshman of the Year for indoor track in 2008. Before his stint at Murray State, England served as an assistant to the head cross country coach at his alma mater, The Ohio State University. In addition to working with numerous Big Ten champions and Olympic hopefuls, he served as meet manager for the Jesse Owens Classic and director for the Ohio State Cross Country Camp.

2011 Year In Review

D

Panthers Host CAA Meet, Renew Past Success uring the 2011 season, the Georgia State cross country teams made great strides towards re-affirming themselves as themselves as a premier running program.

Both the men’s and women’s teams saw significant improvement in the second year under the guidance of head coach Chris England.

Georgia State cross country hosted the 2011 CAA Championship, the first conference meet hosted by GSU in a decade. The teams excelled on their familiar home course at Nash Farm Battlefield — the women finished third in the conference and the men fourth.

2011 Awards and Accolades

“The direction for the future is only for the best,” said England. “We finished this season on a great note. So many good things have happened in the past two years since I’ve been here. I’m happy to say that we have a strong foundation and we’re building a tradition.”

CAA Championships finish Men — 4th of 7 teams Women — 3rd of 10 teams

Here’s a comparison of the teams’ results in 2010 and 2011: • In 2010, both the men’s and women’s teams placed 8th at the CAA championship. In 2011, the women improved 5 spots to place 3rd and the men moved up 4 places to take 4th. • In 2010, neither team placed a runner in the top 20 at the CAA meet. In 2011, three Panthers earned All-CAA honors. • In 2010, the women placed 19th at the NCAA South Regional meet and the men only traveled four runners and did not place as a team. In 2011, the women improved to 14th and the men were 15th. • In 2010, neither team placed a runner in the top 70 at the Regional meet. In 2011, the Panthers had three runners in the top 50, including an All-Regional finisher. One cause of the drastic improvement was the arrival of two stellar newcomers: freshman Hannah Stefanoff and sophomore transfer Valentin Poncelet. • Both runners were the top finishers on their respective teams in each meet during the season. • Stefanoff notched three individual meet victories during the year and a program-record five conference Runner of the Week honors. • Poncelet added two individual victories and a Runner of the Week award. The Belgian-native became the 20th All-Regional finisher in program history. • Both runners each had six top ten finishes in the eight meets during the season. • Both runners earned All-CAA honors; Poncelet was 8th at the conference meet and Stefanoff 9th. Junior Katharine Showalter was the third All-CAA finisher and came in 11th at the CAA meet.

Recap 2011 REcap

History

Records

2011 Year In Review The Panthers hosted a pair of home meets during the year including the GSU Invite on Sept. 17 and the CAA championship on Oct. 29. This marked the first time GSU hosted a conference championship since 2001. “The meet schedule this year was pretty competitive,” said England. “That was one reason the teams did so well at the CAA meet. After running against all of those nationally ranked teams, facing the teams in our conference didn’t seem so bad. All of the runners were relaxed and ready to run hard and I think the outcome showed that.” Despite a challenging schedule, the GSU runners demonstrated great confidence and poise during each meet of the 2011 season: • The teams started the season at the UGA Invite in Bishop, Ga., where the women finished 3rd and the men were 5th. • At the Auburn Invite, the women claimed a team victory and the men came in 3rd. • Georgia State hosted the 36th annual GSU Invite at Nash Farm Battlefield. Led by Stefanoff’s individual victory, the women placed 2nd. The men came in 4th with Poncelet finishing 5th overall. • The Panthers ran in one of the most competitive national meets at the Paul Short Run in Bethleham, Pa. The women came in 33rd out of 45 teams and the men came in 15 out of 46. • At the Jaguar Invite, the women scored a perfect team score of 15 in route to a team victory and the men finished second behind the host Augusta State team. • Georgia State swept both team and individual awards at the Coach “O” Invite at Troy, Ala. The women again earned a perfect score by sweeping the top 6 individual spots. • The Panthers finished the 2011 season by hosting the CAA championship and then traveling to the NCAA South Regional meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

(From left) Sinclair, Houle, Bishop and Anderson

For their successes, the women’s team was ranked in the USTFCCCA weekly regional poll throughout the season. Despite being unranked in the preseason, the women entered the South regional rankings in the number 10 spot. They would eventually slip to the 12th place on the rankings during the course of the year. Five seniors completed their cross country careers in 2011. Chris Harper remained the only upperclassman for the second year on the men’s team. Zanny Anderson, Kacee Houle, Andrea Rodriguez and Danyel Mitchell provided the veteran leadership for the women’s side. “The seniors were amazing,” said England. “They’ve been around longer than I have at Georgia State and have seen a lot of changes. I’m just glad now we have stability, a good coaching staff and a strong, motivated team. Because the teams are so young, the seniors use their leadership to keep everyone stay focused and motivated.” These senior runners will be sorely missed next season, but the success of the underclassmen during 2011 bodes well for the future of Panther cross country. With only one upperclassman, the men’s team should return eight out of nine runners on the roster. A strong sophomore class should benefit from another year of college running and return as experienced juniors in 2012. The women’s team benefited from a deep roster and got production from a number of runners. Three juniors will cushion the loss of the seniors and a strong freshman class hopes to continue their success in their second year as Panthers. n

All-American n Georgia State Cross Country’s lone All-American finisher (one of only two first-team AllAmericans in any GSU sport) was ironically not American. Canada-native Mark Steeds (left, at the 2008 NCAA Track & Field Championships with longtime Panther head coach John Rowland) finished 12th at the NCAA National Championships in 2008. Steeds took first place at the CAA Championship meet that same season.

History In Brief The Georgia State men’s cross country program began in 1964 as one of the school’s first NCAA varsity sports. In 1985, Georgia State began fielding a women’s NCAA cross country team under the guidance of then-head coach Bruce LaBudde. The Panthers have captured 10 team conference titles, five by the men’s team and the same number by the women. Eight individual men and 10 women have also won a conference crown for Georgia State. In 2008, Mark Steeds became one of only three Georgia State studentathletes in any sport to be named a first-team All-American when he finished 12th overall in the NCAA Championship. The Panthers have made an additional eight appearances in the NCAA finals, including three trips for Andrew Letherby from 1995-97.

2009 All-CAA Janel Blancet and Caitlin Price

Four of GSU’s coaches have earned conference Coach of the Year honors a total of twelve times. Both John Rowland and Jessica Raby took home the award four times each. Rowland, Raby and LaBudde not only coached Georgia State cross country, but also competed for the Panthers. LaBudde was the star of the first cross country team in 1964 while Rowland and Raby were each earned multiple conference honors during their careers. The Georgia State Invitational meet was run annually from 1974-2007 in Panthersville. The meet was revived in 2010 by current head coach Chris England at Nash Farm Battlefield.
