ince beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president on Jan. 1, 2009, Mark P. Becker has launched a major strategic planning initiative focused on positioning the university to become one of the nation’s premier urban universities. Embracing its commitments to recognized excellence in both education and research, as well as its unique location in and commitment to Atlanta, the university is rising to new levels of accomplishment and impact. Under Becker’s leadership, GSU in 2011 approved and began implementation of its 10-year Strategic Plan, whose mission is to position Georgia State “as a dynamic academic community where teaching and research combine to produce leaders and create solutions to conquer the challenges of the 21st century.” In 2010 Becker oversaw the launch of the Second Century Initiative for faculty excellence, or “2CI.” This initiative is recruiting additional faculty members to Georgia State to build internationally recognized scholarly strength and critical mass in areas of priority. Seeking to recognize the importance and influence of international commerce and technology for Georgia State students and researchers, Becker has worked to enhance Georgia State University’s global reach, the cornerstone of which was the
2010 opening of GSU’s Confucius Institute, a partnership with the Beijing Language and Culture University and one of the first business-oriented Confucius Institutes in the United States. In addition, Becker leads a diverse university whose undergraduate academic profile continues to rise, and a number of the university’s excellent graduate programs enjoy strong national rankings. Becker also has overseen a number of physical improvements and enhancements including: the opening of the Parker H. “Pete” Petit Science Center; the university’s first freshman housing and dining complex, the Piedmont North housing and dining complex; the construction of on-campus Greek housing; and the purchasing of land for future growth and expansion in downtown Atlanta. Prior to his appointment to Georgia State, Becker served as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Before assuming that role, Becker spent three years at the University of Minnesota as a biostatistics professor, dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health, Preparedness and Emergency Response. From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor and associate dean for
academic affairs at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University and his doctorate in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University. Active in the Atlanta community, Becker is a member of the Central Atlanta Progress Executive Committee; Atlanta Committee for Progress Board of Directors; Georgia Aquarium Board; Woodruff Arts Center Board of Trustees; Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Research Alliance Board of Trustees; Commerce Club Operating Board; ARCHE (Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education) Board; the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities Board of Directors; and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta Board of Directors. During his career, Becker has been involved in several professional associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Biometric Society and the American Statistical Association, where he is a fellow. He has been principal investigator on research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and he has published extensively in leading journals of medicine, public health, and statistics. Becker has served on a number of editorial boards, was co-editor of Sociological Methodology, and was a guest editor for Sociological Methods and Research and for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Becker and his wife, Laura Voisinet, have two grown children, Matthew and Julia.

n just three years at the helm, Georgia State University Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick has overseen the remarkable transformation of Panther Athletics, from the launch of GSU football to the enhancement of every sports program to the announcement that Georgia State will move to the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2013. Levick presided over the Georgia State football program’s highly successful debut in 2010, and now, after just two seasons, she has the Panthers poised for a jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision, a move that will continue GSU’s ascent to the forefront of college athletics. Her significant imprint extends to the basketball court as she lured successful head coach Ron Hunter, who revitalized GSU basketball in his first season and led the Panthers to their first postseason berth in a decade. Levick’s first three years on the job have also been marked by dramatic upgrades in facilities and fund-raising. Annual giving to the Panther Athletic Club has increased more than ten-fold, and the two largest gifts in the history of GSU athletics have been secured. Construction projects include the GSU Football Practice Complex, new facilities for strength and conditioning and sports medicine, and upgrades to every venue used by the Panthers. And the progress continues. In 2012-13, sand volleyball comes on board as Georgia State’s 19th sport, complete with a state-ofthe-art facility on the GSU campus. The new sand volleyball complex is part of an ambitious Athletics Master Facilities Plan that Levick has developed to address the needs of every sport. One constant amid the change is the success of GSU student-athletes in the classroom as the Panthers maintain a
cumulative grade point average over 3.0 while completing more than 5,000 hours of community service annually. In 2011, Levick was recognized by the SportsBusiness Journal as a “Game Changer” among women in sports business. With a resume of experience and success at prestigious athletics programs across the nation, Levick came to Georgia State in March 2009 from the University of Maryland, where she served as chief of staff/executive senior athletic director, overseeing daily management of the 27-sport program. Her impressive career includes a total of seven years as director of athletics at Santa Clara University and Saint Louis University as well as nearly two decades in senior administrative positions at Maryland and Stanford University and stints with the Pacific 10 Conference and the NCAA headquarters. Levick was named the 2001 Division I Athletic Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). In 2005-06, she received the General Sports TURF Systems Athletic Director of the Year Award for the NCAA Division I Central Region, and she was recognized in both 1998 and 1999 as one of the nation’s Top 25 Female Sports Executives by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal. She is a past president of the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association. Before going to Maryland in 2007, she served three years (2004-07) as director of athletics at Saint Louis, where she led the transition from Conference USA to the Atlantic 10 Conference and served as the lead fundraiser for a new $80 million on-campus arena and practice complex. In 2006, she received the Carl O. Bauer Award as the top amateur sports figure in the St. Louis area. Levick also spent four years (2000-04) as director of athletics and recreation at Santa

Clara University, where she oversaw a major renovation of the school’s basketball arena. The Broncos’ women’s soccer team captured the 2001 national championship, still the only NCAA team title in school history. Prior to Santa Clara, Levick worked 12 years at Stanford as senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She served as the primary administrator for 33 varsity programs that won 44 national championships and six straight Sears Cup titles during her tenure. Levick previously served as assistant commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, assistant director of communications and women’s programs at the NCAA, women’s gymnastics coach and associate athletic director at Slippery Rock University, and assistant gymnastics coach and synchronized swim coach at Indiana University. She began her career at Pattonville Senior High School in St. Louis, Mo., coaching gymnastics and women’s track. Levick is a 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri, and she holds a masters degree in athletic administration from Indiana University. She has two daughters: Heather, who is married to Michael Klass, and Melissa.

ormed in 1976 the Sun Belt Conference quickly rose to the greatest heights of collegiate athletics by sending a team to the NCAA Final Four in the league’s first year of existence. Fast forward 36 years and the league again finds itself at the pinnacle of collegiate athletics as a member of the 11-league alliance of the Bowl Championship Series.
The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history.
During the 2012-13 season the Sun Belt Conference’s membership will consist of Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic, FIU, LouisianaLafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, South Alabama, Troy and Western Kentucky University. Ten of the 11 current Sun Belt members play football at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level.
Since the 2007 football season, the Sun Belt Conference ranks fifth out of the 11 FBS conferences in postseason bowl game winning percentage. In fact, the Sun Belt Conference ranks ahead of noted “Big Six” leagues - the ACC, Pac-12 and the Big Ten. Furthermore, the Sun Belt Conference outpaces its non-automatic qualifying BCS partners in the WAC, Conference USA and the MAC.
As the conference moves forward to the year 2013, the league will be comprised of 12 members with Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana-Lafayette, LouisianaMonroe, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, TexasArlington, Texas State, Troy and Western Kentucky University. The reformatted league will have 10 football playing members of the 12 total members. The league’s new look will feature two evenly matched and geographically logical divisions divided into an East Division and West Division.
The world has taken notice of the Sun Belt Conference as well. Proof of that comes as the league now has two automatic tie-ins to postseason bowl games. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl agreement with the Sun Belt Conference ensures that a Sun Belt team will play in that bowl game through 2013 (the league has sent a team to that game every year since the game’s inception in 2001). The Sun Belt Conference also recently signed an extension with the GoDaddy.com Bowl, played annually in Mobile, Alabama, that will ensure that a Sun Belt team plays in that bowl game through 2017.
Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in 2012 that will result in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Fans of the Sun Belt Conference can look forward to seeing more Sun Belt teams playing on national television on ESPN and ESPN2 and additionally the new ESPN deal will result in more coverage on ESPNU. ESPN will continue to televise the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 32nd straight season in 2013, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country.
Over 95 percent of Sun Belt Conference teams earned a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) of over 925 as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its annual APR report recently. The most recent APR scores are based
on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years. The Division I Board of Directors set cut scores of 925 and 900 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible immediate and historical sanctions. In total, 95.2 percent of Sun Belt Conference teams earned a multi-year APR score over 925. Eight institutions had 100 percent of their programs score above the 925 mark, those institutions are: UALR, Denver, Florida Atlantic, LouisianaLafayette, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Troy and Western Kentucky. The league’s APR numbers are up compared to a year ago, as Sun Belt Conference institutions improved from 92.4 percent of all programs hitting the 925 threshold. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include NFL Hall of Fame football player “Mean” Joe Greene (North Texas) former All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former All-Star baseball player Mike Lowell (2007 MLB World Series MVP, FIU), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (LouisianaMonroe) and actor Andy Garcia (FIU). The conference’s first 36 years have also produced numerous individual national champions along with Olympic track medalists including Earl Bell, Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State), Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (FIU). Old Dominion’s Anne Donovan, who received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation’s top women’s basketball player in 1983, helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal in 1984 and helped the Lady Monarchs capture the national championship in 1985.

eorgia State track and field will try to build off of the first Sun Belt conference championship captured by the women’s cross country team this fall.
Showalter again paced the group by winning the meet individually, being named the Sun Belt Runner of the Year and advancing to the NCAA National Championship meet.
The Panther track and field team will also have a chance to compete in Sun Belt championships this spring with the indoor conference meet on Feb. 23-24 in Jonesboro, Ark. and the outdoor meet on May 10-12 in Miami, Fla.
Along with Showalter, Stefanoff was named to the All-Sun Belt first team after she finished fifth at the conference meet. Kearney and Rubel also earned all-conference third-team honors by finishing in the Top-15.
The 2012 Sun Belt women’s cross country Coach of the Year, Chris England enters his second season in charge of the GSU track teams.
Showalter earned five Sun Belt Runner of the Week honors during the cross country season after picking up one CAA Track Athlete of the Week award during the 2012 outdoor track and field season.
“Our coaching staff is extremely motivated and look to push their respective event groups to form a unified team effort,” said England. “The distance runners have already established themselves in the Sun Belt and the sprinters and field events hope to join in on the action and work toward conference championships.” The women’s track and field team finished third at the CAA outdoor championships last year, after winning the conference title in 2011. With 122 points, the team was only 10 points out of first place, the closest margin separating the first and third-place teams in the nation. Distance/Mid-Distance The distance runners contributed heavily to last year’s finish in the CAA outdoor championships, led by Katharine Showalter’s win in the steeplechase and runner-up finish in the 1,500m. Hannah Stefanoff placed fourth in the 5,000m, while Jennifer Rubel came in fourth in the 10,000m. Niamh Kearney placed fifth in the 1,500m, while Alison Bishop and Anna Sinclair finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the steeplechase. The Panthers should benefit heavily this year from the momentum garnered from winning the Sun Belt cross country championship this fall. GSU edged out Arkansas State 52-58 to claim its first conference title since 2001.

Hurdles Seniors Tamara Moore and Leah Norman should be strong contenders for the Panthers in all varieties of the hurdle events after both earning allconference honors at last season’s CAA Championship. Moore was named the 2012 CAA Track Most Outstanding Performer after winning both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles at the conference meet. The 2011 CAA Rookie of the Year, Moore now has three individual conference titles and qualified for the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary meet in the 100m hudles. Norman finished second in the 400m hurdles behind Moore to score eight points for Georgia State. She finished seventh in the event in 2010. Sprints With five returning letterwinners and six newcomers, this event group should be one of the deepest and most productive for Georgia State this season. Amy Henry begins her second season in charge of the group after joining the GSU coaching staff in 2011. The Panthers return sprinters Wande Brewer, Gabby Brooks, twin sisters Talia and Tatiana Colbert and Aniya Moore. GSU will also add freshmen Ravin Gilbert, Marrissa Jenkins, Jaqueline Obi, Katherine Randolph, Jasmyne Robinson and Kissa Williams to the roster.

Most of these student-athletes are capable of competing in a variety of events, including sprints, jumps and relays. Departed senior Charlesha Lightborne competed only one season for Georgia State, but she made it count. The Bahamas native earned All-CAA by finishing third in the 100m at the championship meet and qualified for the NCAA meet in the 200m. The 4x400m relay team consisting of Moore, Lightborne, Talia Colbert and Brooks placed third at the CAA meet to claim All-Conference honors. The Panthers should have plenty of potent combinations to form into successful relay teams this season as well. Jumps Graduate assistant coach Tanaya Lloyd will primarily work with the jumpers. Lloyd competed in the triple jump last season at Penn State and qualified for the NCAA championships in the event. Angelia Nugent departed Georgia State as one of the most decorated and accomplished jumpers in program history. The native of Paterson, N.J. reached the finals of the NCAA Championship twice in the triple jump and was a three-time CAA champion. Chan Harris was also lost to graduation after finishing third in the high jump for GSU to earn another All-CAA distinction. The graduate student was also a standout forward on the Panthers’ women’s basketball team. Brooks placed third in the long jump to earn All-CAA and was one of four Panthers to score in the event. Freshman Alexandra Johnson will be a new high jumper for the Panthers. Throws Travis Coleman enters his first season with the program and will lead the throws crew in addition to heading up the multi-events and vertical jumps (high jump and pole vault). Coleman was an accomplished thrower at Winthrop University in North Carolina.

GSU returns all three throwers from last year’s squad and add a few more newcomers to the roster. Two seniors, Kesean Henderson and Sydney Henry, will lead the squad with a great deal of experience. Carressa Reeves performed well as a freshman and just missed out on All-CAA honors in the discus. The Philadelphia native will look to continue to contribute as a sophomore. Schedule Georgia State has a number of prestigious meets on the schedule in an attempt to push the athletes to new heights and personal achievements. “These meets present an opportunity for the top athletes to qualify at the Penn and Texas Relays,” said England. “Then, our team trips to the UFC Invite and Pepsi Florida Relays should motivate the individuals as they compete against the nation’s best.” The indoor schedule begins in December 2012 with a trip to Clemson, the same way the Panthers began last season. The team returns to Clemson later in the outdoor season on May 4. The schedule also includes a pair of trips to the newly constructed Birmingham CrossPlex for the UAB Blazer Invite and the Samford Invite. GSU visited the CrossPlex three times last indoor season. New on the schedule is the Sun Belt Indoor Championship on Feb. 23-24. Since 2005, the Panthers competed in the CAA, which did not have an indoor championship. Hosted by Arkansas State, the meet will take place in Jonesboro, Ark. During the outdoor season, Georgia State has trips to several big meets, including the nationally renown Penn Relays and Texas Relays, as well as meets hosted by SEC schools Georgia, Florida and Auburn. Georgia State will compete for the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship in Miami, Fla. on May 10-12. Those who qualify will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary meet in Greensboro, N.C. Three Panthers qualified for the Preliminary meet last year.

In the first three seasons under his guidance, the Panther cross country teams have captured a conference title, eight All-Conference honors, a Runner of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards, one All-District distinction and eleven conference Runner of the Week awards.
Before his stint at Murray State, England served as an assistant to the head cross country coach at his alma mater, The Ohio State University. In addition to working with numerous Big Ten champions and Olympic hopefuls, he served as meet manager for the Jesse Owens Classic and director for the Ohio State Cross Country Camp.
England revived the dormant GSU Cross Country Invitational in 2010 this time at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga. This was the same course where the Panthers hosted the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships for the first time since the Panthers joined the league in 2005.

England came to Georgia State as head cross country coach in March 2010 after serving three seasons in the same role at Murray State University. He was elevated to interim track and field coach during July 2011 and was promoted to the position permanently in 2012. England guided the Murray State women’s cross country program to second place at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009 — the program’s highest finish in nearly two decades. England’s distance runners helped Murray State to third-place showings at both the indoor and outdoor conference track and field championships in 2009. In 2009, England coached the OVC Athlete of the Year for both indoor and outdoor track in Katelyn Jones (indoor) and Taylor Crawford (outdoor). Crawford was additionally honored as the top female athlete at the indoor and outdoor championship meets, and both runners qualified for the 2009 NCAA regionals. Jones was previously named OVC Freshman of the Year for indoor track in 2008.

A year after winning their first-ever conference title in 2011, the Panther women’s squad finished third in a closely-contested CAA championship on May 4-5 in Fairfax, Va. With 122 points, the GSU women’s squad fell only 4.5 points behind runner-up VCU and 10 behind the CAA champions James Madison. This spread represents the smallest margin between the top three teams at any conference meet in the nation in 2012. The point total was also the second highest recorded by a GSU track and field team, behind only the 133 points scored in 2011 during the CAA title run. This season marks the fifth time that the Panthers have finished third in a conference meet. Georgia State was led by three individual CAA champions in four events in Tamara Moore (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles), Katharine Showalter (3,000m steeplechase) and Angelia Nugent (triple jump). All told, nine individuals and one relay team earned All-CAA honors for finishing in the top three in their events. The reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, Moore was named the CAA Most Outstanding Track Performer at the CAA meet after winning both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Nugent captured her second CAA title in the triple jump a year after winning both the triple and long jumps.

Moore, Nugent and Charlesha Lightbourne were the three representatives for GSU at the 2012 NCAA East Regional meet in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 24-26. Moore qualified for the quarterfinals of the 100m hurdles and Lightbourne competed in the 200m dash. Nugent advanced to the NCAA National Championship in the triple jump after breaking her own school record with a leap of 13m (42’ 8”). The trip to the national meet was her second in as many years, making her only the third Panther track and field athlete with multiple national championship appearances. A year after finishing 19th at the NCAA national meet, Nugent was injured in her first attempt and withdrew from competition. A native of Paterson, N.J., Nugent concluded her four-year career as one of the most successful track and field performers in GSU history. Her accolades include being a six-time All-CAA competitor, four-time conference champion and a school record holder. Showalter cruised to a conference victory in the steeplechase, a year after finishing second in the event. The junior also finished second in the 1,500m to score a total of 18 points for her squad. During the season, Showalter won the steeplechase at five meets and earned CAA Runner of the Week honors on April 3.
Men’s Competitors Cross Country stand-out Valentin Poncelet placed fifth in the 5,000m for the men’s team at the CAA championships. The native of Lillois, Belgium won the 5,000m race in two meets during the season and the 1,500m race at another and earned CAA Runner of the Week honors on April 3. Kacey Rollins also earned a fifth-place finish at the conference meet in the 110m hurdles. The sophomore compiled five top 10 finishes in hurdle events over the 2012 season. Senior Chris Harper finished his career as a Panther with a sixth-place finish in the 1,500m at the CAA meet while sprinter Chris Miles crossed the finish line seventh in the 100m dash for Georgia State.
Wrap-up Combined Notes
At the CAA meet, four individuals, including Showalter, scored a total of 18 points for the Panthers in the steeplechase. In the women’s long jump, four more Panthers combined to score 15 points, with Gabby Brooks leading the charge with a third-place finish.
Twelve seniors (nine for the women and three for the men) concluded their time at Georgia State during the 2012 season. But a strong class of juniors, including Moore, Showalter, Norman and Brooks, will return as they look to continue the success experienced in 2011.
Moore, Lightbourne and Brooks earned additional All-CAA distinctions as part of the third-place 4x400m relay team, along with teammate Tatiana Colbert.
The GSU track and field student-athletes earned 42 academic honors over the fall and spring semesters. Ten indiviudals were named to the President’s List over both semesters, 17 made the Dean’s List and 15 were placed on the AD’s Honor Roll.
Lightbourne combined for nine top-10 finishes in sprint events over the season, including a third-place finish in the 100m at the conference championships. The Crown Haven, Bahamas native was named the CAA Runner of the Week on March 20.
Redshirt junior Kelsey Spinks was awarded the Brude LaBudde Sportsmanship Award at the 2012 GSU Blue Carpet awards. The award is named for former GSU cross country coach Bruce LaBudde. Sophomore Anna Sinclair was named to the GSU All-Academic team at the banquet. The 2012 season for the Georgia State track and field team was the first under interim head coach Chris England and assistant coach Amy Henry. England has served as the head cross country coach and distance coach since 2010.
