ince beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president on Jan. 1, 2009, Mark P. Becker has launched a major strategic planning initiative focused on positioning the university, as it sets its sights on its second century, to become one of the nation’s premier urban universities. Embracing its commitments to recognized excellence in education and research, as well as its unique location in and commitment to Atlanta, the university is poised to rise to new levels of accomplishment and impact. Under Becker’s leadership, GSU in 2011 approved and began implementation of its 10-year Strategic Plan, whose mission is to position Georgia State “as a dynamic academic community where teaching and research combine to produce leaders and create solutions to conquer the challenges of the 21s century.” In 2010 Becker oversaw the launching of the Second Century Initiative for faculty excellence, most often referred to as “2CI.” This initiative is recruiting 100 additional faculty members to Georgia State over five years to build internationally recognized scholarly strength and critical mass in areas of priority. Seeking to recognize the importance and influence of international commerce and technology for Georgia State students and researchers, Becker has worked to enhance Georgia State Uni-

versity’s global reach, the cornerstone of which was the opening of GSU’s Confucius Institute in 2010, a partnership with the Beijing Language and Culture University and one of the first business-oriented Confucius Institutes in the United States. In addition, Becker leads a diverse university whose undergraduate academic profile continues to rise, and a number of the university’s excellent graduate programs enjoy strong national rankings. Becker also has overseen a number of physical improvements and enhancements including: the opening of the Parker H. “Pete” Petit Science Center; the university’s first freshman housing and dining complex, to be followed by the Piedmont North housing and dining complex coming on line this fall; the construction of on-campus Greek housing; and the purchasing of land for future growth and expansion in downtown Atlanta. Prior to his appointment to Georgia State, Becker served as executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Before assuming that role, Becker spent three years at the University of Minnesota as a biostatistics professor, dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health, Preparedness and Emergency Response.

From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University and his doctorate in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University. Active in the Atlanta community, Becker is a member of the Central Atlanta Progress Executive Committee; Atlanta Committee for Progress Board of Directors; Georgia Aquarium Board; Woodruff Arts Center Board of Trustees; Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia Research Alliance Board of Trustees; Commerce Club Operating Board; ARCHE (Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education) Board; the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities Board of Directors; and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta Board of Directors. During his career, Becker has been involved in several professional associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Biometric Society and the American Statistical Association, where he is a fellow. He has been principal investigator on research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and he has published extensively in leading journals of medicine, public health, and statistics. Becker has served on a number of editorial boards, was co-editor of Sociological Methodology, and was a guest editor for Sociological Methods and Research and for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Becker and his wife, Laura Voisinet, have two grown children, Matthew and Julia.

harged with leading Georgia State University athletics in an era of unprecedented growth, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick is changing the face of Panther athletics with the historic launch of Georgia State football and the development of the overall program. Under Levick’s leadership, the inaugural football season of 2010 was an unqualified success as the first-year team posted a winning record on the field while averaging nearly 17,000 fans for home games at the Georgia Dome. As a result, Georgia State received tremendous positive exposure, both locally and nationally. Levick’s first two-plus years on the job have been marked by dramatic upgrades in facilities and fund-raising. Annual giving to the Panther Athletic Club has increased more than ten-fold, and the two largest gifts in the history of GSU athletics have been secured. Construction projects include the GSU Football Practice Complex, new facilities for strength and conditioning and sports medicine, and upgrades to every venue used by the Panthers. Her forward thinking is evident in her reorganization of the GSU Athletics Association and the ambitious, six-year strategic plan she has developed for the future of Georgia State athletics. With Levick at the helm, Georgia State’s athletic programs are rising in stature in the Colonial Athletic Association. Since her arrival, GSU has claimed six CAA team titles and 16 individual conference crowns while boasting nine CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees. GSU student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom, maintaining a cumulative grade point average over 3.0 while completing more than 5,000 hours of community service in 2010-11. With a resume of experience and success at prestigious athletics programs across the nation, Levick came to Georgia
State in March 2009 from the University of Maryland, where she served as chief of staff/ executive senior athletic director, overseeing daily management of the 27-sport program. Her impressive career includes seven years as director of athletics at Santa Clara University and Saint Louis University as well as nearly two decades in senior administrative positions at Maryland and Stanford University and stints with the Pacific 10 Conference and the NCAA headquarters. Levick was named the 2001 Division I Athletic Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). In 2005-06, she received the General Sports TURF Systems Athletic Director of the Year Award for the NCAA Division I Central Region, and she was recognized in both 1998 and 1999 as one of the nation’s Top 25 Female Sports Executives by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal. She is a past president of the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association. Before going to Maryland in 2007, she served three years (2004-07) as director of athletics at Saint Louis, where she led the transition from Conference USA to the Atlantic 10 Conference and served as the lead fund-raiser for a new $80 million on-campus arena and practice complex. In 2006, she received the Carl O. Bauer Award as the top amateur sports figure in the St. Louis area. Levick also spent four years (2000-04) as director of athletics and recreation at Santa Clara University, where she oversaw a major renovation of the school’s basketball arena. The Broncos’ women’s soccer team captured the 2001 national championship, still the only NCAA title in school history. Prior to Santa Clara, Levick worked 12 years at Stanford as senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She served as the primary administrator for

33 varsity programs that won 44 national championships and six straight Sears Cup titles during her tenure. Levick previously served as assistant commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, assistant director of communications and women’s programs at the NCAA, women’s gymnastics coach and associate athletic director at Slippery Rock University, and assistant gymnastics coach and synchronized swim coach at Indiana University. She began her career at Pattonville Senior High School in St. Louis, Mo., coaching gymnastics and women’s track. Levick is a 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri, and she holds a masters degree in athletic administration from Indiana University. She has two daughters: Heather, who is married to Michael Klass, and Melissa.

The Colonial Athletic Association continues to build on its reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically. The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 22 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2010-11, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 21 teams in 12 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2011. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 23 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2010-11, 25 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 50 student-athletes received All-America honors in 13 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past five years. Three CAA teams earned NCAA Tournament berths for the first time in 2011 as conference champion Old Dominion was joined by VCU and George Mason.VCU knocked off USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top-seeded Kansas, while Mason defeated Villanova. The Rams were ranked No. 6 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the high-
est ranking ever for a CAA team. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, posting victories over Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. Six CAA women’s basketball teams advanced to postseason play in 2011. James Madison represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its second straight conference championship. Delaware, Drexel, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion and VCU participated in the WNIT, with the Seahawks advancing to the second round. ODU, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. At least two women’s soccer teams have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons and William & Mary gave the CAA a team in the final 16 of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship for the sixth time in the last nine years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary advanced to the NCAA Championship for the 12th straight year and finished 19th overall. In the pool, Towson’s Meredith Budner finished as the runner-up in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle at the 2011 NCAA Championship and received All-America honors along with George Mason’s Ashley Danner. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship in the past decade. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 14 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the eight of the last nine Major League Baseball drafts. The conference boasts numerous All-Americans in lacrosse, tennis, golf, track and field, women’s lacrosse and wrestling. Commissioner Thomas E.Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current membersGeorge Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.

n his second season at Georgia State, Chris England was elevated to Interim Director of Cross Country and Track and Field in July 2011. In addition to his roles as head cross country coach and distance coach for the track team, England oversees the administration of the programs, including budget, scheduling, recruiting, travel and development. England came to Georgia State as head cross country coach in March 2010 after serving three seasons in the same role at Murray State University.
He has been instrumental in bringing about the return of the GSU Cross Country Invitational, this time to Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga., and in hosting the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships for the first time since the Panthers joined the league in 2005. His first season with the GSU cross country program in 2010 was highlighted by a pair of season-opening victories by both the men’s and women’s teams at the Struts JSU Opener and the GSU Invitational. Under England’s guidance, sophomore Katharine Showalter earned AllCAA honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the second year in a row during the 2011 outdoor track and field season. England guided the Murray State women’s cross country program to second place at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009 — the program’s highest finish in nearly two decades. England’s distance runners helped Murray State to third-place showings at both the indoor and outdoor conference track and field championships in 2009. In 2009, England coached the OVC Athlete of the Year for both indoor and outdoor track in Katelyn Jones (indoor) and Taylor Crawford (outdoor). Crawford was additionally honored as the top female athlete at the indoor and outdoor championship meets, and both runners qualified for the 2009 NCAA regionals. Jones was previously named OVC Freshman of the Year for indoor track in 2008. Before his stint at Murray State, England served as an assistant to the head cross country coach at his alma mater, The Ohio State University. In addition to working with numerous Big Ten champions and Olympic hopefuls, he served as meet manager for the Jesse Owens Classic and director for the Ohio State Cross Country Camp. England previously worked at the University of Wyoming as a graduate assistant in the athletics department, and then at Boise State University, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams.

“Everyone is excited for the upcoming track season. Piggy-backing off the championship last season, we have high expectations for the teams. This is a young team but one that continues to improve and impress.”
— Coach Chris England
F
or the first time in school history, a Georgia State track and field team will be defending conference champions entering the 2011-12 season. The GSU women’s team captured the 2011 CAA Track and Field title on May 5-6 in Fairfax, Va. Seven events were won by Georgia State competitors and ten individual Panthers took home All-CAA honors. Chris England steps into the position of interim head coach this season, in addition to his role as head cross country coach. The Panthers also welcome new assistant coach Amy Henry, who will be in charge of sprints and hurdles. “Everyone is excited for the upcoming track season,” said England. “Piggy-backing off the championship last season, we have high expectations for the teams. These are both young teams but they continue to improve and impress.” The women’s team returns 26 letterwinners from last year’s championship roster, graduating only five seniors in 2011. For the men, fourteen runners return from last season while only four will not return. Seven freshman join the women’s side in the 2011-12 season, while six rookies have signed on to run for the men. “Several new additions are ready to fill in the roles left by some outstanding seniors,” said England. “They are hungry to make their mark on the team and motivate everyone to contribute.” Distance/Mid-Distance With months of competition already under their belts following the 2011 cross country season, the distance runners should prove a strength for the Georgia State track team this year. Both men’s and women’s cross country teams saw steady improvement during the fall and hope to continue that success on the track.

The women’s cross country team placed third at the CAA championship meet and put two Panthers on the All conference team in freshman Hannah Stefanoff and junior Katharine Showalter. Showalter was also an AllCAA competitor in track last year, finishing second in the steeplechase at the conference meet. The GSU men’s team came in fourth place at the CAA championship and were paced by sophomores Valentin Poncelet and Tyler Tomy. Poncelet led the Panthers in each meet during the season after transferring from American International College. Tomy was a top competitor for GSU in both track and cross country last year as a freshman. This will be the final year of competition for seniors Chris Harper, Zanny Anderson, Kacee Houle, Andrea Rodriguez and Danyel Mitchell. With 15 women and 12 men listed as either distance or middle distance on the 2012 roster, distance will be the deepest event group for the Panthers. Sprints/Hurdles New sprints assistant coach Amy Henry inherits a young, but talented group in her first season. The speedsters were a crucial component in capturing the conference title and earned a number of accolades. Four individuals and one relay team in this event group earned All-CAA honors at the 2011 conference championship. Brandy Swann (400m), Tamara Moore (110m hurdles), Danielle Hill (400m hurdles) and Kacey Rollins (110m hurdles) all placed in the top three at the conference meet. The 4x400m relay team of Swann, Hill, Angelia Nugent and Lavina Dent also earned the All-CAA distinction. Swann, Hill and Moore all qualified for the NCAA East Regional in their respective events. Moore was also named CAA Rookie of the Year following her performance at the conference meet, where both she and Hill captured CAA individual titles. All of these sprinters, with the exception of Dent, will compete again for the Panthers in 2012. Seniors Alex Gainous, Chris Miles, Charlesha Lightbourne, Latrica Jackson and Brandy Swann will provide leadership to the large group of sprinters in their final year of competition. Ten men and nine women are listed as either sprinters or hurdlers on the roster and should provide depth in these events.
2011-12Season SeasonPreview Preview PANTHERS Schedule The Panthers already kicked off the indoor season with a trip to Clemson, S.C. and the Orange and Purple Winter Classic. Three of the remaining four meets during the indoor season will be held at the newly constructed Birmingham CrossPlex facility located in Birmingham, Ala. The final meet of the season will be held at Sewanee, Tenn. Georgia State will remain in the city of Atlanta for three meets during the outdoor portion of the 2012 schedule. These are the Georgia Intercollegiate meet on March 16-17, the Yellow Jacket Invite on March 31 and the Georgia Tech Invite on May 11-12. During the season, the Panthers also will make road trips to Athens, Ga., Oxford, Miss., Auburn, Ala., and Troy, Ala. GSU concludes the schedule with the CAA Outdoor Championship which will take place on May 4-5 in Fairfax, Va. For those able to qualify during the season, the 2012 NCAA East Regional meet will be held in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 24-25 and the NCAA Championship take place in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6-9.
Jumps Senior Angelia Nugent was the top Panther performer last season, qualifying for the NCAA national meet in the triple jump in 2011. She finished seventh at the NCAA East Regional with a school-record jump of 12.77m. At the CAA Championship, Nugent won both the triple jump and the long jump and senior transfer Shaquita Young won the high jump. Both earned All-CAA honors and qualified for the regional meet, although Young was unable to compete at the NCAA. Although Young exhausted her collegiate eligibility in 2011, Nugent will return this season to help guide a group of talented jumpers, many of whom also compete in sprints. Juniors Gabby Brooks and Kelsye Holt, along with sophomores Wande Brewer and twins Talia and Tatiana Colbert compose the event group. Throws Yolanda Berryhill leaves as one of the most decorated track and field athletes in Georgia State history. She won three CAA titles, holds the school records in the discus, shot put and hammer throws and was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the 2011 CAA championship. Although she will no longer compete for the Panthers, Berryhill remains a part of the program as a graduate assistant in strength and conditioning. She graduated from GSU in 2011 with a degree in exercise science and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in exercise physiology. Her departure leaves the throwing events to juniors Kesean Henderson and Sydney Henry, along with freshman Carresa Reeves. Henderson has a personal best of 36.11m in the discus and Henry boasts a best shot put toss of 10.82m.

Nugent, who broke her own school record several times in the triple jump, blazed through the NCAA East Regionals, finishing seventh with a leap of 12.77m (41-10.75 ft). The Athens, Ga., product advanced to the NCAA Nationals, where she placed 19th out of 24 jumpers with a mark of 12.42 meters. Also advancing to the NCAA East Regionals were Berryhill (Discus), Hill (400m Hurdles), Moore (100m Hurdles), Young (High Jump) and Brandy Swann (400m). Besides the school record in the triple jump for Nugent, three other Panthers set school marks. Berryhill broke her own school record in the discus with a toss of 48.78m (160-05 ft), Hill set a new 100m hurdle mark with a time of 58.90 and Jacia Montgomery broke her own school record in the heptathlon with 4,530 points.

During the year Berryhill earned two CAA Field Athlete of the Week Awards, while Moore, Nugent and Young earned one award each, with Moore being the only Panther to earn Track Athlete of the Week accolades. Berryhill earned her first after the Georgia Intercollegiate, where she placed first in the discus, second in the hammer throw and fourth in the shot put. Young won the high jump at the Gem of the Hills Invitational to claim her CAA award. Her mark placed her 23rd in the country at the time. Berryhill picked up her second honor after Auburn University's War Eagle Invitational, where she placed fifth against a loaded field in the discus. Moore and Nugent earned their CAA awards after securing spots in the NCAA East Regionals after strong showings in last chance meets. Moore ran 13.50 in the 100m hurdles prelims at the Albany State Last Chance Meet, while Nugent placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.70 meters. The men's team graduates no one from this year's squad that showed marked improvement throughout the season. Rising senior Chris Harper lowered his 1,500m mark several times throughout the season including a best of 3:57.50. Also showing great improvement throughout the year was Michael Dampier, who lowered his time in the 800m by 11 seconds
throughout the course of the year. Rollins also performed admirably in the 110m hurdles, placing third at the CAAs, the lone Panther male to earn All-CAA honors. The Panther men only sent 14 competitors to the CAAs, but the team still managed to score 14 points with Rollins scoring six in the 110m hurdles, while the 4x100m relay team placed fourth and the 4x400m relay team finished sixth. Ending their careers for the Panthers were five GSU student-athletes that scored points for State including Berryhill, Lavina Dent, Jasmine Love, Montgomery and Young. Berryhill graduates as one of the most decorated GSU women's track and field athletes to ever put on the uniform. The Leesburg, Ga., native holds school records in the discus, shot put and hammer and was an All-CAA performer four times, winning three CAA titles. She also earned Capital One Academic All-District III first team as a senior. With a host of talented returnees, the future is surely bright for the GSU track and field program is it gets set to try and repeat the magic that turned out to be the 2011 season.
