How to send gifts to faraway friends and family

Tours by Design 3x6.125

The holiday season is a time to share happy experiences with friends and family. But reconnecting with loved ones come the holidays is not always possible, especially when family and friends are spread out across the country, if not the globe. Even though these people may not be close geographically, they’re still close in our hearts and, therefore, still on our holiday shopping lists. Some issues arise when sending gifts to faraway friends and family. Distance necessitates shipping gifts or making travel arrangements. To make that process less complicated, consider these suggestions. · Package gifts wisely. When shipping gifts, exercise caution to ensure the item arrives on time and in one piece. The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for the shipping industry, and packages may endure a few bumps along the way. For fragile items, use extra packing peanuts, newspaper or other protective wrapping material. Choose the right size package so the gift does not move around much inside of the box. If the gift is expensive, insure the package in the event it gets lost or damaged. Also, you may want to spend a little more money to have the shipment tracked and E GSR½VQEXMSR WIRX [LIR the package is delivered. This can offer some peace of mind during a hectic time of year.

· Take advantage of free shipping offers. Many retailers offer discounts on shipping rates during the holiday season. Shop at retailers that offer such discounts, as shipping costs can be exorbitant depending on the sizes of the packages being sent. In addition, online retailers may allow you to ship the gift directly to its recipient, which can help you ensure the gift gets to its destination on time. · Give gift cards and GIVXM½GEXIW +MJX GEVHW EVI an easy item to ship, and can be sent within the regular mail for the cost of a stamp. Certain retailers may have digital gift cards SV GIVXM½GEXIW XLEX EPPS[ buyers to email a special code to the gift recipient, who can then redeem the code for a purchase credit. This is a convenient, fast and inexpensive way to send holiday wishes. · Don’t forget about inspections and customs procedures. Items shipped out of the country may be delayed by customs inspectors at their ultimate destination. Assume that certain packages may be opened or detained, and ship such packages early so the gifts still arrive on time. Packages that look unusual or like they’re hiding something may be prone to inspection more so than others. Be honest about declarations of value and what is contained in the package. Also, realize certain items, like fruits, vegetables, plants, or seeds,

may be prohibited. Learn the international shipping rules for your gift’s destination prior to sending anything. Distant family members and friends may be out of sight but certainly not out of mind come the holidays. When it comes to sending gifts, ship smart. T

10 ways to conserve energy this winter Conserving energy in the winter is a concern for many men and women. Whether your goal is to save energy and do your part for the environment or to trim a few dollars from your winter utility bills, here are 10 ways to reduce energy consumption without WEGVM½GMRK GSQJSVX XLMW winter. 1. Have the furnace

serviced. You can reduce furnace fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent by having the system serviced yearly. Late spring or early autumn is a good time to schedule an MRWTIGXMSR ERH LEZI ½PXIVW replaced in forced-air systems. All radiators and other elements should be kept free of dust. 2. Remedy drafty windows. Drafty windows

not only let cold air in, but also let warm air out. This is a one-two punch in terms of energy waste, forcing heating units to work harder to regulate a consistent temperature. Caulking and weatherstripping applications are easy do-it-yourself projects. If windows are old and especially drafty, consider replacement. If such an undertaking

will stretch your budget, use tightly sealed plastic sheeting to insulate drafty windows until you can afford to replace them. 3. Address additional leaks. Windows and doors are not the only places where cold air can get in or warm air can escape. Leaks occur around pipes and plumbing penetrations to the home, and cold air also can enter through utility cutthroughs, light plates and outlets. Use insulation or weatherstripping to seal leaks in these areas. 4. Decorate with light-colored furnishings. Make use of the sun. In the winter, the sun’s rays are not as powerful as during other seasons. That’s due to the tilt of the planet’s axis. However, you can still maximize daylight time for warmth. Open curtains and drapes on southern-facing windows and let warm sunlight shine through. Then close the curtains again when evening falls. You may be able to turn down the heat during the day when the sun is warming your home. 9WI ½VITPEGIW TVSTerly. Fireplaces can be unnecessary sources of

Blades that spin clockwise will trap heat inside to keep your rooms warmer during the cooler months. Adjust your ceiling fan to a low setting to gently push hot air back down. 9. Wear warmer clothes. AHL All-Star Game Coming to Utica by Daniel Baldwin In 2013 and early 2014, the Utica economy experienced a big boost when the Utica Comets played 38 homes games at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. According to WKTV. com, local restaurants and hotels have experienced a dramatic increase in customers before and after a Comets game, and many redevelopment projects, both inside and around the Utica Aud., are also increasing throughout Utica. The Utica Comet’s players, staff, and coaches helped improve this city’s status. But another sporting event, at the Aud., could double the city’s economy and experience an enormous boost of fans and out-of-town visitors in early 2015.

American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced last Tuesday that the Utica Memorial Auditorium would be home to the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic. This All-star event will last Jan. 25-26th, and the game will be televised in Canada and all across the United States. A skills competition between the best AHL hockey players will take place in the Aud. Sunday, Jan. 25. The AHL Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony will be on Monday, Jan. 26 followed by the all-star game between the Eastern and Western Conference. Turning Stone Resorts and Casinos will be the presenting sponsor for this event and will host all other all-star festivities at their casino.

This announcement was made more than one year after Vancouver Canucks Assistant General Manager Laurence Gilman introduced the Utica Comets franchise. During the American Hockey League’s Board of Governors meeting in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Utica Comets Pres. Rob Esche and Chairman Frank Duross announced the decision of hosting an all-star game in Utica, and the AHL President agreed with their decision and elected to place the 21st AHL All-Star Classic in Utica. “This is a credit to Robert and Frank and the fans of the Mohawk Valley for supporting this team,” Andrews said. Comets Director of Communications Mark Caswell Jr. said that the fans were the main reason why he and the rest

of his staff decided to put the all-star game in Utica. “I think the All-Star Classic coming to Utica is another example of just how great the fans of the Comets are,” he said. “Because of their passion, and dedication to making the AHL work in Utica is the reason why the AHL is bringing their winter showcase to the Mohawk Valley.” Last year’s All-Star Classic took place in St. John’s Canada. This year’s event will now shift to the American border and hundreds of AHL hockey fans, from near and far, [MPP ½PP XLI WIEXW EX XLI Aud. next year. “I expect Comets fans to sell this building out,” Caswell added. “Absolutely it (All-Star Classic) will boost the economy. Players executives, and representatives from all 30 teams will be in Utica.”

Long Island resident and Utica College student Nick Testiny said he doesn’t follow hockey that much but is excited about hearing this type of news. “I’m hoping I can get a ticket for it because it should be a good night out if you can get one cheap enough,” Testiny said. “It’s nice to see

something so big come into a small town like Utica. It’s going to good for the Comets to have a big event happening in their small stadium.” Ticket prices range from $49 to $89 and include admission to both the Skills Competition and All-Star Game. T

Buy-Lease-Rent By S.D. Shapiro

In the fast paced 21st century we’ve traded common sense for the ability to quickly look up information on the internet. We’ve forgotten our manners and civility. How do we get back to our roots? Can we get back? Food for thought . . . In the modern economy that has left most people questioning much of what we knew (or thought we knew) the idea of leasing vs. buying has become a common discussion.

Vista Lanes 3x6.125

Buying vs. Leasing is like watching a movie on demand (pay per view) vs. Buying a DVD or Bluray disk. When you buy a DVD you can watch it, re-watch, or share with friends. You have something solid to hold on to. You can put it on your shelf. When you’re done watching the on demand version you’ve enjoyed the movie but you don’t have a tangible thing. The same holds true with a leased vehicle. At the end of the term, you have driven the vehicle or lived in the space but you do not have anything. No equity. )UYMX] MW HI½RIH EW XSXEP assets minus total liabilities. Basically, equity is what something is worth

after you pay off any loans or debt secured against it. For our purposes, if you bought a new car YWMRK ½RERGMRK XLI IUYMX] is what the car is worth after you have paid off the loan. You need to take into consideration things like the age and condition of your car [LIR ]SY EVI ½KYVMRK SYX your equity. A 1984 Buick Skylark does not have the same type of equity a 2012 Dodge Caravan would hold. Dents, dings, and depreciation all affect equity. This would hold true for you house or snowmobile or even your Willie Mays baseball card. There is a convenience to leasing that is not necessarily there when you buy. With many car leases when you are done with the term of the lease you turn the car in and get a new one. That is why you sometimes see people driving a new vehicle every 2 years. Remember, with a lease, when you turn your car in every little detail from the tiniest scratch to the smallest ding will FI PSSOIH EX [MXL E ½RI tooth comb. The dealer will check the mileage and how much tread is left on your tires. Every extra mile will result in addi-

tional charges. Any little dent or ding will cost yo 6IRXMRK LEW MXW FIRI½XW too but be wary of the rent to own bottomless pit. While many rent to own stores allow you to set the payment schedul often you will end up paying almost double the retail price at the end of your term. When buying, leasing, o renting each has its pros and cons. You will have to pick which method of acquisition best serves your current situation. Do not lose sight of the future though. You need to look at the big picture Where will you be in 5 years? Where will you b when the term of your lease is up? When it comes down to buying, leasing, or eve renting do your research and choose wisely. Pick the plan that will either leave you with the most equity when you are done or the plan that has the best terms which should leave you with more cash in your pocke now. Stop and think, “What would my mothe say?” She would say,“Bu if you can, lease if you must, but always pay you bills.”

By Terry Berkson It had gotten cold during the night. My wife and I were in Perkins’ cabin number 8 having breakfast. She looked radiant and tanned with her bay hair down and draped over the back of the chair. The hot metal of the heater pinged as a car pulled up outside. I could see through a curtain that it was Gerard. The engine quit but not before turning a couple of extra times. “He here again?” Alice asked. “His heart is broken,” I said getting up from the table. I poured coffee into a mug as Alice looked up from her magazine. The screen door slammed behind me followed by a complaint. I walked over and passed the mug through the car window. “I see you haven’t timed your engine.” I said.

The bark was skinned off several saplings.

“They get new horns?” “Every year,” Gerard said. “What happens to the old ones?”

“Anything you say. It’s already September. You’re going home tomorrow. Today’s your day!”

“Maybe the critters ate them,” Alice mused.

“Coming right up,” Alice returned. “How about eggs?” “Nah.” “Let’s hunt for puffballs,” I said. ±;I RIZIV ½RH ER] ² Q] wife declared. “I don’t believe they exist!” “You always go home too early,” Gerard said. “This ]IEV -´PP ½RH ]SY E TYJJFEPP ² “Seeing is believing,” Alice said as she put the doughnuts on the table.

“It’s cold out there,” Gerard countered as he got out of the car, slipped on a jacket and followed me to the porch. “Okay, Alice, where’s my Freihoffers, he called, his thin lips smiling to one side of his face, a large broken nose trailing.

“It’s territorial,” Gerard said.“And they get the velvet off their new horns.”

“What do you want to do?” I asked.

“See for yourself,” I said.

“What do deer rub for?” Alice wanted to know.

“No time to time,” Gerard answered.“Busy man, had to go down to sign for another check!”

I looked past the car towards the empty cabins. “Looks like rain.”

“So, where’s the puffball?” Alice asked.

“Should be a puffball in here,” Gerard said.“I could go for some fried in butter.” “Go on,” Alice protested. One night earlier in the summer Gerard was drunk and rapping on our cabin door at three in the morning. “You better get out there,” Alice said. “He’s going to wake everyone.” I slipped on my pants and headed for the porch, the screen door slamming behind me. Gerard was standing in the yellow bug light grinning with that crooked smile of his. “Look who’s here!” he said leading me towards the Olds. It was Julie. She had died her hair a honey blond. She was back again and tipsy like my friend. We greeted each other and exchanged some middle of the night nonsense. Gerard looked at me with an expression that said,“Tell me how to make her stay.” But, I knew she wouldn’t because she had left so many times before. In a short time my friend would be hurting. Now, Gerard was already headed down to the stream. We followed him. There were crab apple trees scattered along the banks. Alice pulled an apple from a tree, brushed it on her pants and bit into it. “Don’t eat those,” Gerard called. “There’s better ones here.” Not far from the stream we came upon an orchard. There were many different kinds of apple trees and their branches were drooping from the weight of swollen Macintosh, Cortland, Idared, Ma-

He was holding out for his Golden Delicious. We weaved in and out of the trees for a long time. My friend was no longer looking for puffballs. I had taken off my jacket to make a sack. Alice had them in her jacket and pants pockets. It began to drizzle. We were out of the orchard and headed for the car. The high grass was wet. Soon leaves from the tall corn stalks were brushing past our faces. Gerard was far ahead, his legs taking long powerful strides. He was out of hearing range.

Creative Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is as much about candy as it is about dressing up in fun costumes and engaging in scare tactics.

Every Halloween, many people look forward to participating in “frightful festivities, such as costume parties and contests, but often wait until the last minute to come up with a costume.

Humans have loved their sweets for centuries. Early human beings made candy out of honey by drying it and forming a taffy-like confection, while many modern incarnations of candy involve dissolving sugar into water or milk to form a syrup. Candy is then made by varying the temperature of the syrup and the sugar concentration to achieve desired textures. The word “candy is derived from the Arabic “quandi, meaning “made of sugar.

This usually leaves slim pickings at party stores and costume shops or a tossed together look. With a little planning and creativity, you can avoid the scramble this year and create a classic Halloween costume using items you probably have at home, or can easily and affordEFP] ½RH )EW] (-= ½RHW Follow these tips and tricks - and treat yourself to a costume that will make this Halloween sweeter than ever. * Use it as a time to clean out your closet. Smarties are a favorite all over North America and elsewhere. When demand is too high for the NJ factory, particularly around Halloween, Smarties are also produced in a Canadian factory in Newmarket, Ontario. Smarties imported to the United States are still called Smarties. However, Smarties sold in Canada are known as “Rockets,â€? as another candy sold in Canada already bears the Smarties name. Halloween wouldn’t be nearly as sweet without troves of candy treasures. Children are urged to have their candy sorted and inspected by parents prior to eating to avoid any dangers, such as food allergies or tampering. T

hello

thoughts from our publisher, Fred Lee

Hello Again, I have been playing a mental game — some would call it a daydream. I have been trying to imagine what General George ;EWLMRKXSR XLI ½VWX president of the United States, would chat about if he could join the group around the old chunk stove over in the Otsego Hills at Charlie Hearn’s store. Do you think he would brag, or even suggest that his military genius alone was responsible for winning the Revolutionary War against the English? Let’s stretch the dream a little further and ask,

would he attempt to take sole credit for planning the formation of the new U.S. government? Before we attempt to ERW[IV [L] HSR´X [I ½VWX read something he wrote while he was president. “No man without the help of God can lead this country.” Doesn’t this prove what this great man believed? In my words, I believe he meant no man can possibly hold the SJ½GI SJ TVIWMHIRX SJ XLMW greatest of all countries without believing in God and accepting God’s way as correct.

From the top down in both our state and federal government, who would ever write a statement such as President Washington’s? Why would they if they do not even believe in God? I agree with General George Washington, president of the United States, which leads me to ask the question of all questions: do we believe our top government leaders believe in God and depend on him for strength and guidance? At election time, doesn’t it seem reasonable that we should search the candidates to learn if they are believers in God? Our most important motto is “In God We Trust” — but we go ahead and vote MRXS SJ½GI E TIVWSR [LS by his acts, actually proves that his belief in God is the furthest thought in his mind. If a president cannot president properly — without a belief and trust in God — can a nation which has kicked God out of its schools and government buildings and attempted to remove “In God We Trust” from its currency have any chance to survive? Some believe

I.B. might mean the person is helping the boring truth out a little bit — gross or minor exaggeration. Man who raises $55k for Potato Salad Throws Party COLUMBUS, Ohio ( A P ) An Ohio man who raised $55,000 in a joking crowd-funding appeal to pay for his first attempt at making potato salad threw a huge public party that promised peace, love and potato salad. PotatoStock 2014 was held in downtown Columbus and featured bands, food trucks, beer vendors and, yes, plenty of potato salad. With more than 3,000 pounds of potatoes, the charityminded party was open to people of all ages.

PotatoStock 2014 promised peace, love and potato salad. Photo courtesy of wikimedia.org

Zack Brown had jokingly sought $10 on Kickstarter in July to buy potato salad ingredients, but his mission drew global attention and earned tens of thousands of dollars.

The Idaho Potato Commission and corporate sponsors donated potato salad supplies for the party. Brown is partnering with the Columbus Foundation to support charities that fight hunger and homelessness. The account started with $20,000 in post-campaign corporate donations and will grow after proceeds from PotatoStock are added. His fund will have potential way after this potato salad is forgotten, Lisa Jolley, the foundation s director of donors and development, told The Columbus Dispatch. Brown told the newspaper that he intends to do the most good that I can. T
