Prop’s Inn has been an area icon since it was opened in the year 1939 by the Mosakowskifamily. Due to failing health, Duke Mosakowski and his wife Doris took over Prop’s Inn from Duke’s Dad who had been working their family business right up until he needed to retire in 1962. Duke and Doris did some remodeling and opened it as a pub with food available on Saturdays which included the famous signature Ham sandwich, still available and one of the inn’s favorite menu items to
this day! In 2005, Eric Delbuono bought the property from the Mosawski family and expanded the kitchen’s capabilities and started opening daily at 11 o’clock in the morning to be able to offer lunch on a daily basis. When I asked Eric more about the property, it became quickly apparent that Prop’s Inn was more than just a business opportunity for him. It was like coming home. As an 18 year old, Eric remembers coming into Prop’s and enjoying a cold brew with his friends. A favorite haunt of his and he said that Duke, Doris and their daughter Jackie all made him feel like family. Eric remembers on more than one occasion telling Duke and

Serving a full menu every day along with a great special board including your feel good comfort foods like lasagna, chicken and biscuits and more! Doris if they ever wanted to sell, he wanted to buy! Well, we all know how that story ended and Eric Delbuono was able to realize his dream. The charm and appeal that Prop’s Inn has is truly ageless said Delbuono, “We have 50 year veterans who still come by and sit on their favorite stool and enjoy a cold one and our famous Ham sandwich, then we have the after work crowd who faithfully come by after a long day to relax for a bit and then later in the evening you’ll see a lot of the younger crowd.” Eric mentioned too that at lunch time the place gets buzzing and there is always something great on the special board along with some standards like, homemade Pierogies every Tuesday, chicken and biscuits every Wednesday and Friday fish fries! “A full menu is available every day, all day.” said Delbuono. Prop’s Inn became the talk of the town recently when it was a common sight to see construction vehicles and contractors putting up scaffolding on the exterior of the charming little inn on Genesee Street. became quickly curious and were quick to mention that they hoped that Prop’s wasn’t going to change too much! The old charm and character of Prop’s Inn was obviously important to them as it was to Eric. The final product was well received with many happy nods of approval! All were relieved that Prop’s Inn was STILL their quaint, and comfortable neighborhood bar where the staff makes you feel right at home and the food is always delicious! Prop’s is open Monday through Friday from 11am, Saturday from noon and on Sunday at 1. The beer will be cold and the food will be great! Must-haves for game day Fans and non-fans alike typically spend at least some time watching football, especially on Sunday and Monday nights, and many people do so at parties geared around the game itself. Here are a few staples for you as the host to keep in mind. Some foods seem to be almost expected at football parties, here is a short but safe list to have on hand. Dips: Of course, snacks always taste better when guests have something to dip them into. When choosing dips for the party, encourage guests with culinary skills to make their own homemade dips and bring them to the party, and make some of your own as well. Hosts hesitant to try their hands at making dips can always buy some from the store, just be sure to choose popular dips like onion- or cheese-flavored dips and even some salsa. Nachos:

Certain foods have become synonymous with football parties, and nachos certainly fall into that category. If hosts and guests all eat meat, cook up some homemade nachos with tortilla chips, ground beef (or even ground chicken), green peppers, red peppers, jalapeno peppers, shredded cheese, and salsa, be it homemade or store-bought. Exclude beef or chicken when hosting guests who abstain from eating meat or poultry. Nachos can be made in a snap, so hosts might want to wait until just before the game starts to whip up some homemade nachos. Beverages: Beverages are another important must-have when hosting football party. So hosts should anticipate guests wanting to enjoy a beer or two during their party. But beer isn’t the only beverage hosts must stock up on. Have plenty of water on hand, as well as some beverages like iced tea and soda for kids and adults guests who do not drink alcohol.
Chicken wings: Like nachos, chicken wings have become synonymous with football. Hosts who want to try their hands at homemade wings can consider the following recipe for “Baked Jerk Chicken Wings” from Helen Willinsky’s “Jerk From Jamaica” (Ten Speed Press). Baked Jerk Chicken Wings Serves 4 as an appetizer so you may want to double or triple for larger parties! 18 whole chicken wings, or 12 drumsticks 11/2 11/2 sauce 1/4
cups jerk marinade cups tamarind-apricot cup soy sauce
In a baking dish, combine the chicken and 1 cup of the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 11/2 hours or up to 4 hours, turning occasionally. The longer the chicken marinates, the hotter it becomes. Remove the chicken from the marinade and discard the marinade. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Place the chicken in a greased baking dish. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, basting twice with the reserved 1/2 cup of marinade. When done, the juices will run clear when the chicken is pierced with a knife. Prepare a dipping sauce by combining the tamarind-apricot sauce with the soy sauce. Serve the chicken hot or at room temperature, with the dipping sauce. n
Oktoberfest can be a party for all ages
700 Varick St. Utica, NY 13502
TEN 55” Flat Screens Oktoberfest is the world’s longest fair, running for sixteen days from late September to the first weekend in October. More than six million people from around the world attend the event in Munich, Germany, each year. Smaller Oktoberfest parties are held elsewhere, and the theme can be an interesting one for individuals who want to enjoy a harvest party that does not involve Halloween and costumes. Including children in Oktoberfest celebrations is relatively easy. All you need to do is offer activities that do not involve alcoholic beverages. Try these ideas to get started. Stein relay Both adults and children can participate in this event, as long as party hosts can keep track of the beverages inside the steins. Adults can use beer, while kids’ cups can be filled with apple cider or root beer. Participants take chances running their filled steins over to a serving tray and then carrying back the full tray without spilling. If any beverages are spilled, the person has to take a drink and then return to have the cup refilled. The team whose members all complete the race first is declared the winner. Polka freeze dance If a polka band is part of the festivities, ask them to participate in a game of freeze dance. Otherwise, hosts can use prerecorded polka music. Players dance to the music until it stops, and once it does, they have to freeze. Anyone
who moves after the music has stopped is “out.” The last person standing is the winner. Pretzel-making contest Have children mold premade dough (pizza or crescent roll dough) into the shapes of pretzels. Provide different toppings, from salt to nuts to sesame seeds, that kids can use to adorn their pretzels. The pretzels can be judged on form and flavor. Barrel or sack races Children can participate in races against the adults to see who has the most dexterity and speed. Plastic or wooden barrels can be rolled, or players can use burlap sacks for races.

Carnival entertainment Since Oktoberfest is a large fair, carnival-type activities can make for a great and appropriate party. Party hosts can set up dunk tanks, a ring toss, darts, and food-eating contests to round out the list of festivities. Setting aside an area for a dance floor and hiring a band or deejay are some additional ways to create a fun atmosphere. Oktoberfest is a great opportunity to gather with friends and family to enjoy great food and drinks and fun games. Explore the various ways to make the party appropriate for guests of all ages, particularly by including child-friendly events everyone can enjoy. n

between to prepare their homes for the potentially harsh months ahead. But such preparation, often referred to as “winterizing,” can make a home more comfortable when the mercury dips below freezing, while saving homeowners substantial amounts of money along the way. * Clean the gutters. Leaves falling in fall can be a beautiful sight to behold, but many of those leaves are likely finding their way into your gutters, where they can lodge and cause a host of problems down the road. If the leaves and additional debris, such as twigs and dirt, that pile up in your gutters are not cleared out before the first winter storm, the results can be costly and even catastrophic. Winter rain and snowfall needs a place to go upon hitting your roof, and gutters facilitate the travel of such precipitation from your roof into street-level drainage systems. If gutters are backed up with leaves and other debris, then ice dams may form, forcing water to seep in through the roof. That damage can be costly and can even cause the roof to collapse inward in areas with heavy snowfall. Clean gutters throughout the fall, especially if your property has many trees, and be sure to check gutters one last time before the arrival of winter. * Tend to your attic. Homeowners who have attics in their homes might want to add some extra insulation up there, especially those who recall feeling cold inside their homes last winter, which is often a telltale sign of improper insulation in a home. A good rule of thumb when determining if your attic needs more insulation is to look for the ceiling joists. If you can see the joists, then you need more insulation. * Address leaky windows and doors. Sometimes attic insulation is not the culprit when it comes to a cold home. Oftentimes, leaky windows and doors are the real bad guys in a drafty home. Fall is a great time to inspect for leaky windows and doors, as the wind outside can serve as your partner. When the wind outside is blowing, take a tour of your home’s windows and doorways, standing next
to them to determine if there any holes or leaks that are letting outdoor air inside. If you notice any leaks beneath exterior doors, install some door sweeps to keep outdoor air where it belongs. Leaks around windows can be snuffed out with caulk or weather stripping. * Test the furnace. Homeowners typically do not devote much thought to their furnaces in spring, summer and fall. But with winter on the horizon, fall is the time to test the furnace to make sure it’s ready for the months ahead. Expect a somewhat foul yet brief odor to appear when starting the furnace. That odor should dissipate shortly, but if it does not go away, then your furnace is likely in need of repair. But even if the smell does not stick around, you might want to have the furnace cleaned by a professional anyway. Such cleanings ensure the furnace works efficiently throughout the winter. * Clean the garage. You might not mind parking in the driveway during the warmer months of the year, but why subject your vehicles to harsh winter weather if you don’t have to? Clean the garage in the fall so you have an indoor parking spot throughout the winter season. Protecting your car from the elements can add years to its life and also saves you the trouble of digging your car out of the snow. Fall is a time of year for homeowners to spend a weekend or two preparing their homes for the often harsh weather that awaits when winter arrives. n
Key to cooking with pumpkins
Dick Smith’s Tavern 1312 Schuyler St. • Utica • 507-3295 Established in 1938 ~ The Oldest Bar in Utica
The Best Little Bar in Utica... BUT don’t just take our word for it!
‘POOR TIM’ Makin’ it happen! Autumn is ripe with vibrant colors and scenery. One of the more vivid sights this time of year are the bright, orange pumpkins that adorn walkways and front porches of homes and businesses. Not only are pumpkins ideal for decorating, but they’re also great to eat. Some people who plan to carve jack-o-lanterns mistakenly believe the same type of pumpkin can be used in their favorite recipes. But what carving pumpkins have in visual flair, they usually lack in flavor and substance. Instead, would-be pumpkin cookers should look to other varieties if they plan to serve pumpkin on the menu. Pumpkins are available from September through December, but they peak in October. Many smaller pumpkins are better and sweeter for cooking. Mini pumpkins, sugar, cheese, and pie pumpkins are varieties commonly used in recipes. The big jack-o-lantern pumpkins have stringy, watery flesh and will provide little to no pulp for cooking. Select a pumpkin as you would any other type of squash. Look for a firm pumpkin with no bruises or soft spots. The pumpkin also should have a deep orange color. Store pumpkins in a cool, dark area until ready for use to prolong freshness. Wash the exterior of the pumpkin in cool water before cutting to remove any dirt and bacteria on the surface of the pumpkin so it won’t be transferred to the pulp of the pumpkin. Slice the pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and any stringy material. Rinse and save the seeds
for planting or roasting. Put the pumpkin pieces in the microwave to cook or you can steam or bake them until the pulp is soft and the pumpkin falls off of the skin. Cool the pumpkins, then puree the pulp until it’s smooth. You may want to strain the pureed pumpkin with a cheese cloth to remove any excess water before using in a pie recipe. Baked breads may benefit from the extra moisture. Pumpkin puree can replace the oil in some baking recipes, much as you would use applesauce. n

Tackle a Winning Taste with Korean Pork Skewers
Spicy Korean Pork Skewers deliver snack-sized game-winning flavor without a lot of preparation time, and without messy plates and silverware, the clean-up is something to cheer about, too. Marinated in an Asian sauce that gets a bold kick from chili garlic, soy and fresh ginger, bite-sized cubes of pork ribs are skewered and then grilled for an unbeatable addition to your game-day spread.
Spicy Korean Pork Skewers Servings: 4 2 pounds boneless country-style pork ribs, cut into 1-inch cubes 1/2 cup chili garlic sauce* 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 inches fresh ginger root, skins removed and chopped (or substitute 2 teaspoons ground ginger) 4 tablespoons filtered sake or dry sherry (optional) 2 tablespoons sesame oil* 3 tablespoons brown sugar In large bowl combine chili garlic sauce, soy sauce, ginger, sake, sesame oil and brown sugar and whisk to form a marinade. Add pork to marinade and let sit for 20 minutes. Heat indoor grill pan or outdoor grill to medium-high heat. Thread marinated pork on skewers, about four to five pieces per skewer. Transfer skewers to grill and cook uncovered, turning to brown evenly every two to three minutes until tender, about 10 minutes total. Serve immediately. *You can find chili garlic sauce and sesame oil in the ethnic or Asian section of most major supermarkets. Quick Tip: Make sure to leave plenty of room on the grill between each skewer to avoid overcrowding the meat and to ensure even cooking. n

But as appealing as such a sanctuary may seem, the cost of creating a luxury washroom is more than many homeowners’ budgets can withstand. Fortunately, a dream bathroom does not have
* Install a wall-hung mirror. If your idea of a luxury bathroom harkens back to a time before the advent of recessed medicine cabinets, then a wall-hung mirror can give the bathroom an entirely new feel without much of a financial commitment. Flushmount mirrors need not require the services of a contractor, but they can provide a sense of elegance that recessed cabinets cannot.

* Replace bathroom countertops. A countertop replacement job may sound expensive, but such an undertaking is not very costly in the washroom, where counter space is typically limited. Since the cost of countertop materials is by the square foot, you can replace bathroom surfaces for a relatively small amount of money. Granite countertops can be beautiful, but such surfaces do not create the warm feel that many prefer in a luxury bathroom. A material such as soapstone is warm and inexpensive and can quickly give the bathroom a new look. * Embrace calm colors. Painting the bathroom is another inexpensive way to give the room an entirely new look. If the walls of your washroom are currently a vibrant color, consider a more calming tone to give the room the luxurious and relaxing feel you’re aiming for. If your bathroom includes a clawfoot tub, you also can make it a two-tone tub to add a touch of relaxing elegance. Paint the tub’s exterior in a calming tone such as soft gray, and you will have transformed the washroom at little cost and even less effort. * Transform your double vanity. Many homeowners prefer a
double vanity in their bathrooms, as such a setup allows both men and women the space to get ready for bed or work without getting in one another’s way. But instead of a traditional vanity with a counter between the sinks, consider installing matching pedestal sinks to surround an antique washstand. This can give the washroom a feel of antique luxury, and such washstands can found for a few hundred dollars. * Replace old fixtures. Though they are often overlooked, cabinet and door fixtures as well as towel racks can greatly influence the feel of a washroom. If the cabinet and drawer handles are old or outdated, replace them with more modern options. Such a job might be even more effective if you repaint or reface existing cabinetry. Neither task is terribly expensive, but both can give the washroom a more luxurious feel. The same goes for replacing old towel racks, which can be an eyesore if they’re especially dated. Transforming a bathroom may seem like a significant and costly undertaking, but savvy homeowners can give their washrooms a new and luxurious look without spending much money. n
The nutritive power of apples a low-fat and ideal snack any time of the day. Because they are low in calories and full of fiber, apples can help men and women maintain a healthy weight.
An apple weighs in at under 100 calories per serving!
Who has not heard the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? It may seem unlikely that one fruit could be so effective at maintaining good health, but apples really are a super food. Apples are a member of the Rose family and are related to pears, peaches, apricots and plums. Though considered a fall fruit, apples can be enjoyed yearround thanks to commercial food production and importing.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away... Apart from being sweet, sometimes sour and refreshingly crisp, apples pack a number of nutritional benefits. Research has shown that apples can help to reduce a person’s risk of heart disease and help those with diabetes. In addition, apples can help fight cancer and prevent dental problems. According to new information from long-running studies published in the British Medical Journal, eating at least two servings a week of whole fruit, particularly apples, blueberries or grapes, reduces a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes by around 23 percent. Apples are high in many antioxidants and, as a result, this
makes them especially valuable at fighting illness. For example, the disease-fighting compounds in antioxidants have been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers by neutralizing free radicals. Apples also are very high in fiber. Fiber is needed to help a person feel full and can also regulate digestive function. Fiber also can help reduce cholesterol by preventing the buildup of cholesterol-causing plaques in the blood vessels, improving cardiovascular function and possibly reducing risk of a stroke as a result. In addition to working their magic inside of the body, apples can have a noticeable impact on physical appearance as well. Apples are sometimes referred to as “nature’s toothbrushes” because they can brighten and clean the teeth. The crisp, abrasive texture stimulates the gums and removes debris from the teeth. What’s more, the natural mild acidity of apples helps to stimulate saliva production that can rinse away germs that lead to plaque.
Did you know there are over 7,000 varieties of apples available???
Because apples can be plagued by insects and parasites, some growers repeatedly spray the trees with pesticides. It is adviseable to buy organic apples to avoid many of the pesticide dangers and to be able to safely eat the apples raw. There are more than 7,000 varieties of apples on the market today. With such variety, availability and health benefits, apples make a convenient and nutritious snack. n

Foods that may help fight cancer The foods we eat contribute directly to our overall health. From toddlers just getting used to solid foods to adults planning their diets, the foods we eat heavily influence how healthy or unhealthy we become. Some foods can even reduce our risk for certain diseases, including cancer. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, numerous studies have demonstrated that individual minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals have certain anticancer properties that can protect men, women and children from this potentially deadly disease. The following are a handful of foods the AICR says can fight cancer and help men and women improve their overall health.

* Apples: Apples are a great source of vitamin C, with one apple providing at least 10 percent of the recommended daily amount of this valuable vitamin. Apples also are a great source of fiber, which can help men and women maintain a healthy weight.
That's important, as excess body fat increases a person's risk for seven different types of cancer. A major portion of apples' dietary fiber is pectin, a polysaccharide that bacteria in the stomach uses to produce compounds that protect colon cells.
* Cherries: Cherries are another great source of fiber and vitamin C, and sweet and tart cherries also contain potassium. Cherries get their dark color from anthocyanins, which are antioxidants that protect cells from damage. Studies have shown that anthocyanins inhibit the growth of cancer cells and even stimulate their self-destruction while having no negative effects on healthy cells. Anthocyanins also have been shown to reduce signs of inflam-
mation in adults who consumed two to three servings of cherries or cherry juice per day.
* Grapefruit: One-half of a medium-sized pink, red or white grapefruit provides at least 50 percent of an adults' daily recommended intake of vitamin C. Though research into the potential anticancer properties of grapefruit with regard to humans is ongoing, studies of animals and cells have shown that grapefruit powder as well as limonin and naringenin, two phytochemicals found in grapefruit, decrease the growth and increase the selfdestruction of breast, colon, lung, mouth, skin, and stomach cancers.
blood pressure and triglycerides. But the AICR still notes the need for more research into walnuts before they can be considered foods that fight cancer.
* Walnuts: Nuts are often cited when discussing foods with anticancer properties, but the AICR notes that walnuts, in particular, are the most heavily researched. Despite that research, the AICR remains hesitant to draw any conclusions with regard to walnuts and their potential link to lowering cancer risk. However, several studies of mice found that consuming walnuts decreased the growth of breast and colon tumors among mice who ate walnuts as opposed to those who did not, while other studies in mice indicated that walnuts reduced the growth of prostate cancer. Studies into the impact of the Mediterranean diet, which includes walnuts, have shown that such a diet can help people lose fat and lower their

Many factors, such as family history, that increase our risk for developing cancer are beyond our control. The arrival of cooler temperatures means motorcycle enthusiasts should have a plan in place for their vehicles. Although fall sees many riders pack their bikes into the garage to wait out the winter, many others see no reason to quit the great outdoors just because colder weather is on the way. Here are a few pointers for riders to consider once the leaves have started to change color.
Gold & Silver, Sterling Silver, Flatware, Holloware
Layer up Layering clothing is a key component of riding a motorcycle in colder temperatures. Many people are not very active on the back of a bike, so they will not generate enough heat on their own. Layering clothing will take the bite out of frosty winds and any precipitation that happens to be falling.

Layer clothing so that you will feel comfortable, maybe even a bit warm when you are just standing around outdoors. A first layer of thermal or fleece is a good idea. Then layer other materials as needed for comfort. Just do not wear so many layers that your mobility is compromised. If

layers are not keeping you warm enough, invest in heated clothing. The outermost layer you wear should be weather- and windresistant. Wind chill can quickly sap your energy and cut your ride considerably. Leaves Leaves can be a significant hazard to riders in the fall. Damp leaves can make a slippery mess of roads, particularly on turns and curves. Avoid all piles of leaves, as you do not know what may be hiding beneath them. Consider wet leaves as dangerous as black ice, as soggy leaves can be just as slippery. Salt and sand Road maintenance crews will use sand and salt to keep roads clear when snow and ice forms. Avoid riding on salty roads because the salt can corrode chrome and paint. If you choose to do any winter riding, apply a coat of wax to all parts of the motorcycle before going for a ride. This will help protect it and enable any salt to be easily wiped off after riding. n

Halloween hijinks include dressing up and scouring the neighborhood for free candy. Halloween is the typically the best day of autumn for children who have eagerly been awaiting the sweets free-forall since the start of the school year. But Halloween is not just for youngsters. Many adults are equally enamored with Halloween, the one day of the year when men and women can don a costume, act silly and let loose for an evening.
Choose a costume that fits your personality or one that’s the complete opposite of what others would expect you to wear! Some adults may wrestle with the decision to get dressed up for Halloween. But one trip to the costume store can shed light on just how popular Halloween is among adults. Costumes devoted to older Halloween revelers often exceed those set aside for kids. The choice in adult costumes is vast. Costumes at the workplace may not always be acceptable. It is wise to check with human resources personnel to learn the company
policies on costumes. If management announces an in-office costume contest or something similar, then this is an indication that costumes are acceptable. Make sure you understand the parameters of getting dressed up and play by the rules, or you could ruin the fun for employees in subsequent years. Steer clear of any costumes that may send inappropriate messages or use off-color language. You never know who might be in attendance at a Halloween party, and certain costumes may be offensive. Choose a costume that fits your personality or one that’s the complete opposite of what others would expect you to wear. A Halloween costume allows you to try on a completely different persona for a night. Recognize there are particular costumes for all sorts of popular characters and figures. Then there are the same costumes in risqué versions. Use discretion with regard to how much skin you want to show. Let the type of event (i.e., office Halloween party or gathering with friends) you are attending help determine which costume you wear. Select a comfortable costume. You want to be able to mingle at a Halloween party. Having a costume that constricts movement can impede your ability to have fun. A large, cumbersome costume also might take up too much room

Fall Garden to make Spring Easier
PULSE pulsepointpress.com October 2014
Take in any cuttings. You can start them in the house over the winter for next spring. In fact, you can even take some plants such as lavender or other herbs, pot them and bring them indoors. Now they can give you enjoyment through-out the winter doldrums and you can replant them in the outside in the spring. Add amendments to your soil, such as compost. Spread it as an even layer over the top of the exposed soil. No need to rake it in right now. What does not get mixed in, by worms and mother nature, will be waiting for you in the spring. Clean your garden tools. This may seem obvious, but is often the most overlooked. Giving your tools a good cleaning and sanding, then oiling the steel will help to preserve your tools for many seasons to come. SharpenAnthony Battaglia
ing your pruners and shears now will be one less thing to do in the spring. Okay if you are really industrious you can even collect any dried seeds from your flowers and veggies. You can then use these to start in the house over the winter or for sowing in the spring. This is by no means a comprehensive list but hopefully it will help to make some of your spring garden chores a little less daunting.
Plant Spotlight As we all know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month I want to feature a beautiful pink flowering Annabelle Hydrangea. Its name fittingly is ‘Invincibelle Spirit’. It is not a large plant only growing about 4 feet high and 4 feet wide producing large beautiful pink blossoms from mid-summer through to the first hard frost; which in most instances is in mid to late October. This Hydrangea can easily fit into any landscape. Take an opportunity to plant one of these Hydrangea to show your support for someone you know who has fought or is fighting this terrible disease. Remember I love to hear from you with questions and feedback. Feel free to email me at anthony@battaglialandscaping.com

Just a moment to say thank you
As many families with small children know, Halloween is a highly anticipated holiday packed with clever costumes, yummy candies and spirited parties. But for many parents, the costs associated with this much-loved occasion can be downright frightful. In fact, according to the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend an average of $72 on Halloween this year, which comes to $7 billion in spending nationwide. With so many ghoulish get-togethers taking place, many parents are looking for ways to stretch their dollars without missing out on any of the fun. Choose costumes with options. Going to several Halloween parties, but don’t want to spend money on extra costumes? Keep versatility in mind when you look for your child’s costume. Your child can go from a ballerina to a fairy to a princess with just a few accessory change outs.

Keeping marriage going strong into your golden years The trend of long-married couples calling it quits has been growing. However, there are some steps couples can take to keep their relationships going strong. According to the AARP, divorces among people over the age of 50 have doubled since 1990. According to Susan Brown, codirector of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University, one out of three Boomers will face their golden years unmarried. There are a number of reasons why divorce rates have skyrocketed among the over-50 set. Understanding just why these divorces are taking place and taking proactive steps to alleviate some of the divorce triggers can be a recipe for a happy marriage that continues throughout a couple’s golden years. * Increase accountability. a transient society where families no longer bat an eyelash over moving great distances away from other family members. As a result, Boomers may feel like they are not connected to children or grandchildren. With this in mind, they may feel less attached to their marriage or their responsibilities or believe that no one will get hurt by a divorce. Keeping families close and remaining in frequent contact can increase accountability and reduce the propensity for divorce. * Get things out in the open. A major reason for a failed marriage is years of avoiding significant issues rather than addressing problems. Couples should make time to talk to each other about anything that might be bothering them rather than letting too many things slide. If these conversations turn into shouting matches, there is always the option of bringing in a third party to serve as a mediator. * Spend time apart. After retirement, couples may find themselves spending hours upon hours in each other’s company. While togetherness can be beneficial, too much time spent together may lead to feelings of suffocation and the perception that each member of the relationship is no longer his or her own person. Individuals can remedy this by doing more things on their own, whether spending time apart with friends or engaging in hobby time without your spouse. After all, absence makes
the heart grow fonder. Brief periods of separation can make the time married couples do spend together feel more meaningful. * Recommit to your vows. After 30 or more years, the vows you shared on your wedding may be a distant memory. Some people may have different views on the permanence of vows, putting personal happiness ahead of the happiness of the couple. Take stock of what you promised one another on your wedding day and stick to those words. * Become a comedian. Laughter has a way of dissolving a tenuous situation. Focus energy on laughing at mistakes instead of pointing blame. * Act like you’re dating. Couples often become complacent after many years of marriage. They may forget about the little details that made the relationship fun in the early years. Make an effort to go on dates, write love notes and think of what was appreciated by your partners when you were in the dating stage. * Practice selflessness. Sometimes all that is needed to rekindle a relationship is a selfless act that shows how much you care for your partner. Couples who are on the fence with regard to divorce can make an effort to improve the relationship rather than simply see divorce as the best option. n

How to improve winter fuel economy Many motorists notice that their vehicles seem to get less miles per gallon in cold weather than in warm weather. That’s not a trick of the brain, as studies have shown that cars do, in fact, have poorer fuel in economy in cold weather. A host of factors combine to reduce fuel economy in the winter. When temperatures dip, engine oil and other drive-line fluids also get colder, and this increases engine and transmission friction. That forces the vehicle to work harder and use more fuel. An engine also takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature when the weather outside is cold. This won’t have too great an impact on fuel efficiency when taking long trips, but the shorter the trip the less economical the vehicle’s use of fuel will be, as a shorter trip means the vehicle is spending a larger percentage of the overall drive at a less fuel efficient temperature. Another reason fuel economy suffers in the winter is the necessities and certain creature comforts drivers need when driving in the cold weather. Windshield defrosters and vehicle heating systems use a substantial amount of power, and that usage forces the vehicle to expend more energy and use more fuel. And while many drivers consider heated seats one of the greatest automotive inventions known to man, those seats also use up a lot of power that negatively impacts fuel economy. But factors outside the vehicle also impact its fuel economy in the winter. For example, colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, and that increases roll resistance, which means the car must work harder and use more fuel to get down the street than it would if it were riding on fully inflated tires in the summertime. Cold air also is more dense than warm air, and that increases aerodynamic drag on the vehicle, which then needs to use more fuel to counter the increased
drag. So what can be done to improve fuel economy in the winter? Fortunately, drivers can take several steps to do just that. · Park the vehicle in a garage. Leaving your car in the driveway in the winter means you might have to dig the vehicle out come winter snowstorms. But that’s not the only inconvenience of parking your vehicle outside in the winter, as doing so can adversely affect its fuel economy. When possible, park the car in the garage, as this increases the initial temperature of the engine, engine oil, driveline fluids, and the vehicle’s cabin. This can shorten the time it takes for the engine to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature while decreasing the engine and transmission friction that negatively impacts fuel efficiency. · Disregard conventional wisdom. Conventional wisdom has long suggested that idling a vehicle for several minutes will warm up the engine more quickly than simply driving. But many vehicle manufacturers now recommend that drivers idle their vehicles for no more than 30 seconds, noting that idling the car unnecessarily wastes fuel and that driving the vehicle is the fastest way to warm up its engine. If you must warm up the vehicle, stick to the now widely accepted guideline that recommends idling for no more than half a minute. · Monitor tire pressure. As noted, colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, so drivers should monitor their tire pressure regularly throughout winter to keep their vehicle safe and to ensure they are not wasting fuel. Fuel economy will almost certainly decrease when the mercury drops. But drivers can employ a number of strategies to make their vehicles more fuel efficient in cold weather. n
How antioxidants play a role in cancer prevention
We Want to Cater Your Next Big Event!
Each year, about 1.4 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with some form of cancer. Although the causes of each particular case of cancer may be unknown, doctors do know that a combination of heredity and environmental influences can contribute to cancer risk. It’s also known that the foods a person eats can help increase his or her chances of preventing cancer. Free radicals and antioxidants Antioxidants often come up in conversations about cancer prevention. Many people understand that antioxidants can be beneficial in a diet but may not be entirely sure what role they play in cancer prevention. Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals that have the ability to harm cells. Formed naturally in the body, free radicals play important roles in cellular processes. But at high concentrations, free radicals can be hazardous to DNA and other cell components. In addition, free radicals form from the damaging effects of processed foods, radiation, tobacco, and pollution. Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found abundantly in fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants include vitamins A, C and E. Alpha lipoic acid, lycopene, coenzyme Q10, and selenium are antioxidants or substances that work with antioxidants to maximize the diseasefighting potential of the immune
system. The body also makes some of the antioxidants it uses to neutralize free radicals, which are called endogenous antioxidants. Antioxidants go after free radicals and essentially consume them, neutralizing their damaging effects to the body. In laboratory and animal studies, the presence of increased levels of antioxidants has been shown to prevent the types of free radical damage that can be associated with cancer. Some research points to taking antioxidant supplements to help prevent cancer, but such studies have yielded mixed results.
Weddings • Showers • Rehearsal Dinners and Birthdays Corporate Events Anniversaries • Reunions Bereavements and Graduations
Increasing antioxidant intake The best way to get antioxidants into your body is through healthy, low-fat foods. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. High-fiber foods also are beneficial. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food guidelines recommend men and women consume 20 to 30 grams of fiber per day. Black and green tea also are healthy sources of antioxidants, and some research has suggested tea can help prevent cancer. A combination of healthy, antioxidant-rich foods and beverages can make for a great defense against cancer. Loading up on nutrientrich foods will keep the body in top form, which goes a long way toward reducing cancer risk. n

Networking plays an integral role in professional growth. Men and women who can nurture relationships within their fields are more likely to be in tune with what’s going on in their professions, and a network of fellow professionals can help men and women advance their careers. But networking often falls by the wayside for today’s busy professionals, many of whom simply can’t find the time in their hectic schedules to foster relationships with professional colleagues. But the benefits of networking are numerous, and it behooves men and women to make an effort to build and maintain strong professional networks. · Recognize the benefits of networking. Networking not only benefits individuals but also the companies those individuals own or work for. While many people view networking as a means to one day finding a new job, net-
working is much more than that. When you foster a professional relationship, the other person in that relationship will be quick to think of you when they need a given service or are asked for a referral. That can benefit business owners’ bottom lines, but even men and women who don’t own a business can benefit, as their bosses will no doubt recognize the role they played in bringing in new business. · Make networking a priority. Once professionals recognize that networking is about more than just building a web of contacts who can help them find their next job, they can begin to prioritize networking so it can help them in their existing jobs. Make an effort to keep in touch with current and previous clients and any other contacts made over the years. Something as simple as an email to catch up or an inquiry to see if there’s anything fellow professionals need will help you stay on their minds, which can help you bring in new business or learn about new opportunities down the road. Maintaining and building a professional network does not always require a lot of work, as even seemingly small gestures can pay big dividends if men and women prioritize such efforts. · Revisit your network from time to time. A network is only beneficial if it remains current. Keep track of the professionals in your network so you know when and where to reach them should you need to do so. A professional networking site such as LinkedIn is a great way to stay on top of what your network is up to, and such a site also is a valuable tool when you want to update your network with any new information about yourself. n

Safe Halloween Fun with Pets
Dr. Timothy DelMedico Clinic Director and Chiropractor
Doctor of Chiropractic Specializing in:
Including pets in your family’s Halloween festivities can be a fun addition to your celebration. However, with all the excitement comes the chance for pets to get into danger or trouble. You can head off potential problems and enjoy an evening of fun with some safety tips and smart planning. Keeping your pet away from candy and other Halloween treats is especially important because so many favorites include chocolate, which is potentially toxic for dogs. It’s also an ideal time to practice obedience commands with your four-legged friends, as crowds of unfamiliar people, costumes and lots of open doors can create temptations too hard to resist.
Pawsitively good party manners •Establish a rule that guests don’t feed the dog – candy or human food. A new interactive toy or long-lasting rawhide may keep your pup busy and out of temptation’s way. Many ingredients commonly found in Halloween candy can be harmful to your pet. For example, xylitol, found in gum and candy can cause dangerously low blood sugar or liver disease in dogs. Chocolate can create a range of symptoms, from vomiting to abnormal heart rhythm to death. Even snacks that are healthy for humans, such as raisins can cause a toxic reaction.
•Prevent your dog from running out an open door by working on a “stay” command. PetSmart’s expert trainer Debbie McKnight explains how to teach this trick: Ask your dog to sit, and praise him when he obeys. While your dog is sitting, say “stay” and place your hand flat with your palm facing the dog. Wait 2-3 seconds then give your dog a treat. You can increase the time he stays by a couple of seconds every three repetitions, working up to 30 seconds. •If you aren’t confident about your dog’s abilities, keep him on a leash while the doorbell is ringing.
Costume comfort and safety •A costume should never constrain or bother your pet. If your pet isn’t comfortable, try a strapon costume that attaches loosely with snaps or around the pet, or find other ways to look festive such as Pet Expressions, available in the PetSmart grooming salon. •Once a costume fits properly, make sure your pet won’t trip on anything like a cape or ribbon. Check for little parts within chewing distance and keep identification tags on collars. •Throughout the evening, watch your pet and make adjustments as needed. You may need to cut or remove portions of the costume to increase a pet’s comfort. The most important part of the evening is your pet’s safety.n

Gifting those who help us throughout the year
Holiday gift-giving etiquette can be confusing, especially when it comes to gifting those men and women who aren’t necessarily friends or family members, but still help us out in a variety of ways. Deciding how to thank the people who intersect our lives by delivering mail or cleaning the pool can take a little ingenuity.
The rule to remember, above all, is that if a gift is given with good intentions, it should be happily received. That being said, here are some general guidelines for gifting those men and women who help us throughout the year. * Determine your list. Think about the people with whom you interact regularly. The sanitation workers who pick up the trash twice a week and your mail carrier, your hair stylist, children’s dance instructor and more. * Establish a budget. The holiday season can be costly, so set a firm
limit on what you plan to give, perhaps between $10 and $20 each, and stick to that budget for each recipient. * Gift a little more to personal care professionals. Your hairstylists, masseuse or anyone who performs more personal tasks for you may warrant a larger gift. Etiquette suggests giving a gift equal to the price of one session of service, even if that gift is cash. Therefore if your hair cut costs $35, gift $35. * Health and child care employees warrant special treatment. A private nurse, nanny or nursing home worker should be gifted for the holidays. Avoid cash gifts with health service providers, opting for a more personal gift that is a token of your affection and appreciation. If gifts are not allowed, consider making a charitable donation in the person’s name. n
Precautions seniors can take when solicited for donations Charities often target certain groups of people when soliciting donations. Those groups may include past donors and people who have recently attended charitable fundraisers. Such an approach can be very effective. It should come as no surprise that criminals posing as legitimate organizations tend to target specific groups of people as well. Anyone can be fooled by a fraudulent charity, but such criminals tend to target seniors more than others. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, seniors often make attractive targets to con artists because seniors are most likely to have substantial savings, own their homes and/or have excellent credit. In addition, the FBI notes that elderly victims of fraud and other crimes are less likely to report those crimes out of fear that their families may feel they are no longer able to take care of themselves or manage their own finances. These factors make seniors especially attractive and vulnerable to con artists, particularly those who prey on well-intentioned men and women by posing as fake charities. But there are steps seniors can take to protect themselves from fraud. * Be skeptical of solicitors. Many con artists will indicate that persons have given to the charity in the past, hoping that prospective victims simply won’t remember if that claim is valid or not. If a solicitor or appeal letter claims that you donated in the past, don’t simply take it at face value, especially if you don’t recall making such a donation. Get specific information about alleged past donations, checking that information against your own bank records and receipts. Many donors claim donations as deductions on their tax returns, which also can be used to verify or debunk solicitors’ claims. Though not all solicitors claiming a past history of donations are dishonest, this is one way that criminals attempt to create a rapport with potential victims, so such claims should be verified before making any donations.
straight to the organization. Never make a cash donation, as cash provides no paper trail should you want to deduct your donation or should you learn that you were victimized by a con artist posing as a representative of a reputable charity.
* Don’t feel obligated to reciprocate a gift with a donation. Many charities send gifts, be it mailing labels or holiday cards, to prospective donors as a token of appreciation for past donations and as a way of encouraging future donations. Con artists are fully aware of this tactic and may try to imitate it in an attempt to defraud potential victims. No matter if the people behind those mailing labels or holiday ornaments are legitimate charities or con artists, you should not feel compelled to reciprocate a free gift with a financial donation. * Beware of solicitors pressuring you to donate. Reputable charities should not be on the verge of shut down if you fail to make a donation, so such organizations never pressure prospective donors into making donations. If a solicitor is pressuring you into making a donation over the phone or in person, chances are strong that this person is not representing a reputable charity. In such instances, hang up the phone or, if the solicitor is on your property, politely close the door, ask the solicitor to leave your property and contact the local authorities. * Send donations directly to the charity after independently confirming their address. When making charitable donations, those donations should never be given directly to solicitors. Donations should only be made after you have independently confirmed the charity’s address and mailed
* Request personal information not be shared. Upon receiving a charitable donation, many charities share their donors’ contact information with other charities. Such actions are legal as long as no sensitive information is shared. But many donors would prefer their contact information not be shared so they don’t find themselves being inundated with solicitations from other charities. Donors can ask to opt out of having their personal information shared upon making a donation. This is especially important for seniors living on fixed incomes who simply cannot afford to support many causes no matter how compelling those causes are. n

More Secure Shopping Ahead Following several high-profile security breaches in recent years, consumers have more reason than ever to be concerned about their privacy when using debit and credit cards. Fortunately, an effort is underway to implement new technology across the United States that will better protect shoppers and their private information. The Europay, Mastercard and Visa (EMV) card is widely used overseas and can be found in the United States. You may have an EMV card in your wallet without knowing it. In fact, according to EMVCo, 45 percent of the total payment cards in circulation globally include EMV chip technology. New guidelines being rolled out in the United States will hold banks or retailers that have not implemented this new security liable for fraud, so by late 2015, consumers can expect to see these changes closer to home. What is EMV?
The Smart Card Alliance describes EMV as a set of specifications for smart card payments and acceptance devices that provide strong transaction security features and capabilities not possible with traditional magnetic stripe cards. The EMV chip in the payment card is an embedded microprocessor that keeps your money and financial information from falling into the wrong hands. What makes EMV more secure? EMV offers greater security than the traditional magnetic stripe debit or credit cards. An important distinction is that data is stored on a chip rather than the familiar magnetic stripe, making it nearly impossible to counterfeit an EMV card.

Sara wanted some highlights and lowlights to add some more defined dimension to her gorgeous locks. After the consultation I started by taking diagonal foils through the entire head starting in the back. Alternating highlight then lowlight every other foil. This technique gives such beautiful coverage without overdoing it. I left her base color alone because it was already a great accent color. After the color was processed I trimmed her length and added shorter layers, then I gave her a flattering face framing angle. The entire process from color to style took about 2 hours total and cost $120 due to her length of hair and product use.

is extremely difficult to crack by hackers,” said Philippe Benitez, vice president of business development for secure transactions for Gemalto, a digital security company that provides the EMV technology. “The card also contains a unique ‘stamp’ that prevents your personal and financial information from being used fraudulently in the event that your card is stolen or lost.” From a technology perspective, EMV boosts security through: The chip: A smart card chip is a small computer (or microprocessor) that has its own data storage, processing power and application software. A unique code: EMV cards generate a unique code that is validated by your bank for each transaction and cannot be re-used. A transaction using a fake card with stolen data couldn’t happen at an EMV terminal because it wouldn’t be able to generate the proper code. Advanced cryptography: EMV security is based on strong cryptography, which is used to generate the unique transaction code that allows the terminal to authenticate the card.
How will EMV change my shopping experience? Instead of swiping your card, now you’ll “dip” your card into the payment terminal, holding it in place to allow the transfer of data. Shoppers should expect that this process will take slightly longer than the traditional quick swipe of a magnetic card. EMV technology also enables contactless payments, so shoppers may instead “tap” their contactless EMV cards, which are just as secure and speed up the check-out experience. Card issuers (your bank or credit company) will determine whether you are required to enter a pin or sign to verify your purchase. Initially, cards will include both EMV and magnetic stripe technology, so you can be assured your card will work whether the retailer has adopted the new system or not.

Carmella’s Café Fresh, Homemade, Delightful by Janet Stanley, Publisher
There are so many wonderful aspects about Carmella’s Café that we could write about, that we had to narrow down our focus to just a couple. One of the biggest things that stood out to me was that every strand of pasta served at Carmella’s Café is home made, fresh on the premises. If you visit the café and are lucky enough to witness this great process you will see their great pasta machine turning out fabulous Capellini, Fettuccini, Spaghetti, or Rigatoni. Owner, Mike Ezzo shared with me that all of their pasta is made “the
old fashioned way,” and has been since the first day they opened. Their pasta is made with the finest imported Fancy Durum and Semolina flours and is served Al dente. Every recipe used at Carmella’s was generated at one time or another from an old family favorite. Many of their famous recipes are actually available on their website too! You will find them at www.carmellascafe.com. The sauces that are used are all homemade with those recipes and represent decades of Mom’s and Grand Mother’s perfecting their family favorites. Always made fresh, with all natural ingredients, their sauces will bring you back to the smells and tastes you remember. Sauces available at Carmella’s Café are Spaghetti, Alfredo, California, Riggie, and Marinara. Many combination dishes are offered because it is just too hard to just pick one favorite sauce. Carmella’s Café also bottles their sauces so you can bring home a jar or two of your favorites too! When you talk to Mike, it quickly becomes apparent that he gives the credit to his success at the restaurant to his wonderful employees. “The staff makes your experience an exceptional one. They like people and it shows. They know instinctively how to treat people.” said a very proud Mike Ezzo. He went on to say, “that in every city there is a benchmark restaurant that’s been there for a long time. Maybe a little tattered and torn, maybe a little worn down, but the food is
Fettuccini Alfredo or Baked Lasagna to choose from. Their daily special are offered at $10.99 and I for one, can get two meals out of mine! Whether you are looking for a bowl of soup and a salad or a pasta feast, you won’t be disappointed.
always good because it’s homemade and Mom’s back there in the kitchen making it with love. Our goal here at Carmella’s Café is to take the best of what the chains tend to be known for, organization, cleanliness and consistency and combine that with the warmth and charm along with the great freshly made homemade food that you will find in a good Mom and Pop restaurant to provide you the best of both worlds. Our area is getting more and more new squeaky clean and shiny chain restaurants but they don’t have Mom in the kitchen and that makes all the difference.”
Some of the other great offerings are their daily drink specials from the bar where you can get 2 for 1 house brand cocktails, wines and 10 oz. drafts all day every day. Wednesday is Ladies Night at the bar from 8pmClose with offers of Martinis and Cosmos for $5.00, House Wines and Sangrias for $2.59 and select drafts for only $2.50. You can also enjoy $5.99 appetizers at the bar from 3pm til close and in the dining room from 8pm – close. Carmella’s also offers two for one regular priced appetizers from 8pm to close. Thursday night from 8pm til Midnight enjoy wings for 49¢ each or clams for $7.99 a dozen! All these great offerings make Carmella’s Café a great stop for the after work crowd too! There is also an early bird special offered everyday from 3:15 to 5:15 pm which are priced right and include your beverage and even dessert!
The biggest challenge of dining at Carmella’s Café is making your final decision. Their menu is multiple pages and offers so much goodness that, I for one, can’t make up my mind! Some of the weekly specials offered are Charbroiled Alpine Chicken on Monday, Chicken Riggies on Tuesday, Baked Lasagna is the feature on Wednesday, Chicken Parmigiana or Herb Chicken Pasta is the Thursday special and Sunday offers Chicken Riggies,
Be sure to stop by Carmella’s Café for lunch, dinner, or a late night bite. The staff will always make you feel welcome and the food promises to always be freshly made, and consistently delicious. Carmella’s is located at 8530 Seneca Turnpike in New Hartford. Open Monday-Thursday from 11am-Midnight, Friday and Saturday 11am- 1am and Sunday Brunch from 9am-Noon, with their regular menu available from 11am - Midnight. n

What are the horrors of Halloween? Many might say encountering a gruesome ghoul or a blood-sucking vampire is the most horrific part of Halloween. However, an allergic reaction can be just as scary as ghosts and goblins come Halloween.

Halloween makeup can trigger an allergic reaction or symptoms of asthma. Inexpensive makeup may contain preservatives that can cause a rash and swelling of the skin. Formaldehyde is a very common preservative used in many of these products, but some products labeled “formaldehyde-free” can still cause allergic reactions. Certain makeup is not advisable to use around the mouth or eyes, so be certain to check all packaging for any warnings. High-quality theater makeup may be a better option than the cheap crayon sticks sold at costume stores. In any event, always test makeup on a small area of the skin well in advance of Halloween. If a rash or any abnormality occurs, do not use the makeup.
Costumes Costumes can induce an allergic reaction as well. If costumes are older and packed away in a basement or attic, trapped dust and dust mites can make it difficult for those with allergies or asthma to breathe. Accessories used for many common Halloween costumes also may cause reactions. Crowns, magic wands and faux jewelry that uses metals like nickel may cause rashes and irritation. Beware of nickel and cobalt, which can trigger allergic reactions. Edible treats Food allergies abound in children and adults. Many commercially produced candy and chocolate bars are manufactured in factories that also process peanuts and other tree nuts, so exercise caution with treats. Baked goods may contain wheat, gluten, eggs, soy, and any number of other food allergens. It’s wise to have a variety of inedible treats available for trick-or-treaters or party-goers, including stickers, pencils and small toys. Halloween should be an enjoyable day for the young and the young at heart. This beloved holiday can be made safer by avoiding common allergy triggers. n

People who have slept within steps of a leaky faucet know full well the nuisance that such water fixtures present. A leaky faucet can make it difficult to sleep at night, but leaks around the house also cost homeowners lots of money. Many leaks around a house are not nearly as noticeable as a dripping faucet. But worn toilet flappers or leaky valves can wreak just as much havoc on a monthly budget as a leaky en suite bathroom faucet does on a night’s sleep. Identifying those leaks, many of which are easy to fix, is a great way to conserve water and save money at the same time. * Start with your water meter. The hours after everyone in the household has taken their morning showers, brushed their teeth and had their coffee is a great time to determine if you have a leak. Water is not typically used during these hours, so check the water meter once the last coffee mug has been

washed and then revisit the meter two hours later. If the meter has changed, then chances are you have a leak.
* Test the toilet with food coloring. Toilets are a common source of water leaks, as deteriorating toilet flappers slowly waste water via leaks that are not always noticeable. Because toilet leaks can be difficult to notice, homeowners might have to get a little creative. Add a drop of food coloring to the holding tank of your toilet, then wait roughly 15 minutes to see if the color of the water starts to change. If it has, your toilet is leaking. * Inspect faucet gaskets and pipe fittings. Faucet gaskets and pipe fittings should not be wet, but wet gaskets and pipe fittings is typically evidence of surface leaks. When washing dishes in the sink, turn the faucet on high. If you notice water coming from anywhere other than the head of the faucet, then you have leaky gaskets. Once you have determined the source of the leak, you can begin to address the situation. Toilets, faucets and showerheads are the most common culprits with regard to water leaks. * Toilets: Flappers are the rubber parts in the toilet’s holding tank. These flappers are susceptible to mineral buildup and decay, and over time that can create leaks. Flappers are inexpensive and easy to replace. When replacing your toilet flapper, take the worn out flapper with you to the hardware store to make sure you buy a new one that is compatible with your toilet. * Faucets: When a leaky faucet is your biggest foe, be sure to turn
the water supply in the house off before you get to work. If your faucet has any decorative knobs, gently remove these so they do not break and you can replace them when the leak has been addressed. From there you must remove the packing nut and the stem. Some stems come off easily, while others must be twisted off from the valve. Inspect these parts for damage before moving on. The O-ring and washer inside the valve seat may be responsible for your leak, so inspect these parts and replace them if necessary. Be sure they are an exact fit so you don’t end up with a fresh leak. Once these items have been replaced, you can reassemble the parts, turn the water back on and check to see if the leak has vanished. If the leak remains, then your valve seat may be corroded or your plumbing might need a professional inspection. * Showerheads: If the showerhead is your source of leaks, you may just need to tighten the connection between the showerhead and the pipe stem. This can be done using pipe tape. If the problem with your showerhead can be traced to the shower handle and cartridge, you might want to hire a professional to fix your leak, as addressing this problem can be tricky. If you want to do it yourself, first turn the water supply off before removing the shower handle. Some handles are especially difficult to remove, in which case you might need to visit the hardware store to purchase a handle puller. Once the handle has been removed, you can then pull the cartridge, which is likely to prove more difficult than removing the handle. The cartridge may need to be twisted loose with pliers before you pull it out, or you may need to buy a cartridge puller that is compatible with the brand of showerhead you have. Once you get the cartridge out, you can install your replacement and reassemblethe parts that were removed. Water leaks around the house can be costly and wasteful. Addressing such leaks can be done in a matter of minutes, but more complex problems may be best left to a professional. n

Energy Reading for October 2014
Monthly Reading with Pat Jones Feeling confused or concerned about your relationship?
Relationship Readings: In Person & Over the Phone Pat Jones Spiritual Healer & Consultant 315-982-0843 Sauquoit, NY www.healingadventures.com

This is a reading of the energy patterns that will be playing out this month, in the collective field of consciousness, using SynchroSign Tiles and Spiritual Guidance. The energy patterns will affect your personal experiences, in varying degrees, throughout the month. The first tile, which is The Roadblock, reveals the foundational “issues” for the month. The Roadblock indicates some type of limitation, often one that appears quite suddenly. It forces your to look at a significant barrier and to work through it, in order for you to continue progressing in the area where it is occurring. This could come up in the area of home, romantic relationships, work, projects, or family. The second tile tells you what may make it challenging to deal with the barriers that arise, and that is The Vices. This tile asks you to look at how you buffer yourself - how you deliberately, or unconsciously, blunt your clarity and senses, through overindulgence. How do you do that? Through sugar, alcohol, nicotine,
PULSE pulsepointpress.com October 2014
or caffeine? Take a good look at how the substance you overindulge in make it difficult for you to remain clear and courageous. The third tile show the beneficial actions that you can take this month, and that tile is The Self. This tile speaks to your balanced, whole, and integrated Self. What actions do you need to take to ensure that you can come from this place of wholeness? Take 2-3 steps this month, in the area of personal development, to create that balanced Self! The fourth tile, indicates an energy pattern that is influencing things but is not strongly apparent, and that is The Alter. This tile asks “What are you willing to sacrifice, in order to resolve the barriers that are being presented?” Are you willing to do what is necessary, or are you stuck in some type of belief around what you should or shouldn’t have to do? The last tile refer to the possible outcomes, and that tile is The Clan. The Clan tile represents group support and synergy.
This shows that it is possible for you to experience this, if you explore and dissolve the barriers that have presented themselves. These challenges, and positive outcomes, can be experienced with any close knit group, such as in a family, a group of people who you work with, or any other group that you are a part of. Support is available, if you are willing to let go of some things that aren’t helping the situation. Pat Jones is a Spiritual Healer, Teacher and Author. She has been using the SynchroSign Tiles since they were first created by her friend, Mary McNaughton, in 1997. She offers private readings in her home office in Sauquoit, NY, as well as over the phone. If you have any questions about this reading, or would like to book a private reading, call or email her. 315-982-0843 pat@healingadventures.com.

FAMILY FEATURES
reparing for an unexpected emergency, especially one brought on by severe weather, is one of the most important ways you can protect your home and family. Proactively addressing storm-related issues ranging from property damage to power outages can minimize a potentially disastrous situation.
Step 1: Verify Your Homeowners Insurance Covers Storm Damage Nearly all homeowners carry some form of insurance on their home, as required by their mortgage lender. But policies can vary, and the after math of a powerful storm is no time to find out you’re underinsured. To ensure your homeowners policy adequately covers your needs, take time to review the policy every year at renewal time, and any time you make any significant improvements to your home. Check that the coverage amount for your main residence accurately reflects the finished square footage of your home, including any upgrades or changes such as a newly renovated bathroom or expanded deck struc ture. Also confirm that the replacement cost your homeowners insurance agent has determined is consistent with what you would expect to pay to rebuild your home. In addition, take time to understand any exclusions, especially those for weather-related incidents. For example, many homeowners insur ance policies do not automatically include flood protection. Finally, take time to thoroughly document your personal possessions with video or still images and record their value. Store the documen tation in a safe place, such as a safety deposit box or remote-access electronic file, that you will be able to access in the event of an emer gency. Not only will this help expedite your claim if you need to replace items, but you’ll have a list ready when you face the daunting task of replacing your belongings.
Keep Up on Home Maintenance Stepping outside after a significant storm is no time to remember that you forgot to trim the tree or secure a loose section of fencing. Making time to provide ongoing home maintenance for exterior features of your home, such as landscaping, decking, siding, roofing and shutters, will ensure they are in good function when bad weather strikes. While little can be done to prevent damage from high-impact storms, routinely checking that everything is in good repair will minimize the chances of preventable destruction. As you assess your home and yard, ask yourself: Are the trees and shrubs properly trimmed and set far enough away from structures that they are unlikely to topple in high winds? Are shutters affixed securely to the house? Are there any cracked or otherwise weakened windows that should be replaced to prevent shattering during a storm?
The easiest way to prepare for a weather-related power outage is by installing a standby generator in advance of the storm season. Fortunately, attaining the safety and comfort provided by a standby generator during a storm event has become more reasonable thanks to emerging technology that has made generators smaller, smarter and, therefore, more affordable. “In the past, having a generator was cost-prohibitive for many house holds,” said Amanda Grandy, marketing manager for Briggs & Stratton Standby Power, which is the exclusive licensee of GE Generator Systems. “Today, technology has advanced to make owning a standby generator far more affordable for the average family.” Improved technology features such as GE’s Symphony® II power management system, which manages a home’s power demands auto matically and electronically during an outage, allow more of a home’s lights and appliances — up to two AC units — to be powered with a smaller standby generator. A home that would typically need a larger 20 kW home generator to power all of the home’s power demands could now be powered with GE’s 10 kW unit paired with Symphony® II technology. The smaller, more affordable 10 kW home generators also boast the smallest footprint on the market, making it ideal for homes with tight lot lines. Learn more about the home standby generators available to home owners at www.gegenerators.com.
Common Types of Backup Generators A power outage is a common result of weather-related emergencies, but it’s also one of the easiest to correct by using a generator. There are two common generator types: portable generators and standby generators. n A portable
generator is an immediate but temporary solution. Typically powered by gasoline, it is lower in cost and doesn’t require installation time, but it can only power a few items for a few hours.
n A standby
generator is an automatic, per manent backup power solution. It requires professional installation outside the home. It is powered by natural gas or liquid pro pane and turns on automatically during a utility power outage to keep a home’s lights, furnace, AC units and other appliances on while the power is out.
Emergency Preparedness Kit Having an emergency preparedness kit of items that your household may need in an emergency situation is critical. Basic utilities such as electricity, gas, water, sewage and phone service may be unavailable after a storm strikes, so the kit should contain food, water, any necessary medications, lighting and backup battery supplies.
Prepare for Backup Power During an Outage Loss of power is one of the most common occurrences in severe weather. And the financial impact of outage-related expenses (e.g. spoiled food replacement, supply purchases or home repair) can add up quickly. “Storm-related power loss can be costly for a family,” said Greg Inwood, vice president for Briggs & Stratton Standby Power. “An unexpected power loss can result in a number of inconveniences if the outage requires special arrangements such as meals out and overnight hotel stays.”

Career spotlight: The role of dental hygienists in oral healthcare
DOVE EYE CENTER ' (315) SEE-2020 www.dovelaser.com Dr. Anthony J. Palumbo Ophthalmologist/Medical Director
Oral hygiene is an important component of overall health. Many people are unaware that conditions of the mouth can translate into medical concerns elsewhere in the body. Overlooking routine dental exams and proper cleaning techniques at home can prove costly and unhealthy mistakes. Upon entering the examination chair, you will likely be greeted by a dental hygienist. He or she may take images of your teeth and begin examining your mouth for any abnormalities. The hygienist is usually responsible for facilitating the cleaning process. He or she will remove tartar from the teeth, administer fluoride treatments and polish the teeth. Dental hygienists will defer to the dentist to examine X-rays and assess the overall health of your teeth. Should dental caries need to be cleaned and filled or more extensive oral work need to be performed, the dentist will take over and the hygienist will assist. Dental hygienists also may be instrumental in educating patients on proper oral care. They may demonstrate flossing and brushing techniques and may even recommend certain products. Some hygienists take courses in psychology so they will have a better understanding of personality traits and phobias in patients and be able to make patients more comfortable in the dentist’s chair. Dental hygienists primarily work in dental offices. Today’s dental hygiene professional has many
career options to explore, says the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. The ADHA notes that the following career paths provide some additional options for hygienists. · Clinician: As a clinician, the hygienist will assess, plan, diagnose, and document treatment of oral diseases while collaborating with other health professionals. Clinical services take place in community clinics, hospitals, prisons, and schools. · Public health: Public health hygienists provide care to patients who would otherwise not have access to dental care. State, provincial or other public health services may be run by government or private organizations. · Corporate: These hygienists focus on the sale of services and products that support the oral health industry. · Education: Some hygienists choose to enter the classroom rather than the dental office. Educators are in high demand, and many colleges are actively seeking dental hygiene instructors. Dental hygienists require a certain level of training and licensure. Criteria may vary depending on where you live, and this may include certificates or degrees. More information is available by contacting the Commission on Dental Accreditation in the United States or the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association. n
