Every Valentine’s Day homes and businesses dress up the decor with cupids and hearts to celebrate a day all about love and affection. The heart shape has been used to symbolically represent the human heart as the center of emotion and romantic love. Hearts symbolizing love can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Those familiar with human anatomy realize that an actual heart bares very little resemblance to the ideographic heart shape used in art and imagery. Similarly, the human heart really has nothing to do with human emotions. Despite this, there are many interesting components of the heart, and a man or woman truly cannot love or live without one. The heart as an organ is relatively small in size. It is roughly the size of a fist and weighs only 11 ounces on average. Although diminutive, the heart is responsible for pumping 2,000 gallons of blood through 60,000 miles of blood vessels each day. It accomplishes this by beating 72 times a minute in a healthy adult. All of the cells in the body receive blood except for the corneas in the eye. Although many people refer to all of the blood vessels in their body as “veins,” they’re actually a combination of veins and arteries. Veins carry fresh, oxygenated blood to the body through arteries. The main artery leaving the left heart ventricle is called the aorta, while the main artery leaving the right ventricle is known as the pulmonary artery. Blood traveling back to the heart flows through veins after it has passed the lungs to pick

up oxygen. The thumping noise that is heard while the heart is beating is actually the chambers of the heart closing and opening as blood flows through. While the heart may not be the cornerstone of emotions, it can be affected by feelings. Studies have shown that a “broken heart” is a real occurrence, according to Live Science. Bad news or a breakup with a loved one can put a person at increased risk for heart attack. This type of trauma releases stress hormones into the body that can stun the heart. Chest pain and shortness of breath ensue but can be remedied after some rest. Conversely, laughter and positive feelings can be beneficial for the heart. Research has shown that a good laughing fit can cause the lining of the blood vessel walls -- called the endothelium -- to relax. This helps increase blood flow for up to 45 minutes afterward. There is good reason to get amorous with a loved one on Valentine’s Day or other times during the month. Being intimate can provide a physical workout, in some instances doubling a person’s heart rate and burning up to 200 calories. That’s the equivalent of a brisk 15-minute run. Also, a study of 2,500 men aged 49 to 54 found having an orgasm at least three times a week can cut the likelihood of death from coronary disease in half, according to The New England Journal of Medicine. The heart is an amazing organ responsible for sustaining life. Although it is not directly tied to love and emotions, without the heart such feelings wouldn’t be possible. n

Men and women must alter their diets as they age. Portion sizes that young adults might have been able to get away must shrink when those same men and women enter their 30s. And as thirty-somethings head into their 40s, what’s on the plate requires more careful consideration than it might have a decade ago. The same goes for men and women over 50, who must take steps to reduce their risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. One of the easiest ways to do just that is to eat healthy foods. The following are five flavorful and healthy foods tailormade for the over 50 crowd. 1. Apples: Apples definitely qualify as a superfood, helping reduce cholesterol by preventing plaque buildup in the blood vessels and, as a result cutting an individual’s risk of diabetes considerably. In fact, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that eating at least two servings of apples per week can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent. Apples also make for a great source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C. 2. Blueberries: Blueberries help men and women maintain healthy blood sugar levels because they are high in soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol while slowing the body’s uptake of glucose. And despite their relatively small size, blueberries contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals per ounce than any other fruit. 3. Broccoli: Though broccoli might not have been your best friend during childhood, you may want to cozy up to this powerful green vegetable now that you have cracked the halfcentury mark. Broccoli is loaded

with vitamin C. A single 3.5 ounce serving of broccoli contains more than 150 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which can shorten the duration of the common cold. In addition, a 2013 British study published in Medical News Today found that broccoli may help prevent osteoarthritis, a degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone that is most common from middle age onward. A similar study from researchers at New York’s Roswell Park Cancer Institute published in the same publication six years earlier found that just three servings of broccoli per month can decrease bladder cancer risk by as much as 40 percent. 4. Fava beans: Fava beans are cholesterol-free and low in fat. Fava beans also may provide cardiovascular benefits and help men and women maintain healthy weights. Fava beans are considered “nutrient-dense,” a term used to describe lowcalorie foods that boast lots of nutrients, and are an excellent source of vitamin B1, which is important for nervous system function and energy metabolism. 5. Oatmeal: Another food that might never make youngsters’ lists of their favorite foods, oatmeal is nonetheless a healthy option at the breakfast table. Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which can reduce cholesterol levels and subsequently reduce a person’s risk of heart disease. Also low in calories, oatmeal can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. Those who find oatmeal a tad too bland for their tastes can double on their superfoods by adding some blueberries into the mix, making their breakfast more flavorful and more healthy. n

Two brothers, one passion... the history of Café CaNole, New Hartford by Janet Stanley, Publisher

passion for the culinary arts.

I had the pleasure recently of speaking with Dean Nole, coowner with his brother Jason of Café CaNole in New Hartford. Café CaNole was one of our first date nights when Matt and I moved into the area. It became an instant favorite. I would have to say that one of the reasons, besides the absolutely wonderful meal we had and the delightful atmosphere, was that we were instantly treated like friends, not just customers.

Jason also graduated from the Culinary Institute of America but chose to study in Boston. Jason had the wonderful opportunity to work with the acclaimed Chef Todd English at the worldfamous Olives Restaurant in Boston before returning to Utica.

a fantastic team in the bakery as well as the kitchen. The pastries and cakes from Café CaNole have become household favorites. Dean shared that during the holiday season, he and Jason were baking at 2:30 in the morning in order to keep up with the demand! He also mentioned that Kelly Jones, also a trained baker, has been with them since the very beginning

Dean and Jason Nole, brothers, who share the passion of creating amazing food and pastry have designed and re-designed their passion over the past 17 years. I asked Dean where he and Jason got their desire to become chefs and Patisseries, synonymous with professional pastry chefs. He didn’t hesitate for an instant when he replied, “from our Mother and Grandparents.” Dean and Jason proudly give thanks and credit to their wives and family for creating their love of great food, putting them on the path of becoming business owners and supporting them throughout their journey. Born and raised in Whitesboro, the Nole brothers developed a passion for fine cuisine that took them on their journey around the world and thankfully back to us here. Dean, the elder of the two brothers, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York City and through a scholarship had the opportunity to travel abroad to study at the prestigious Gruppo Ristorante Italianne School in Torino, Italy. His passion for Italy and its’ culture, motivated Dean, who is fluent in Italian, to actually immerse himself in that culture. He packed up and moved to Sicily at the age of 22. His adventure in Italy led him to work for pastry shops, pizzerias, restaurants and gelaterias. Those experiences were invaluable to Dean’s training and strengthened his

front door of the Culver Ave. bakery, simply said, “Gone to Italy, be back in one month!” The trip allowed Jason and Dean to learn even more about Italian cuisine and its’ presentation and gave them a trip of a lifetime with their father and workers. In February of 2006, the Nole brothers made the decision to once again expand their culinary adventure and opened Ancora! which was located adjacent to the Stanley Theater on Genesee Street in downtown Utica. Ancora! featured a Mediterraneaninspired cuisine and was known primarily as a tapas restaurant with a big dash of Jason’s Mediterranean flair! The everyday management of Ancora! rested mainly on Jason’s shoulders while Dean continued his efforts at Café CaNole. With a thriving bakery business that needed space to grow, the bug bit once again, and Dean and Jason decided to relocate Café CaNole to

And so it began, Chefs, Patisseries, brothers, Jason (left) and Dean Nole, co-owners of Café CaNole circa 1997. When the brothers reunited Stateside, talk began of opening their own Café. After months of planning and a lot of encouragement from their family, especially their Dad, Arthur Nole, also a local businessman, Café CaNole was born! Originally located on Culver Avenue in Utica, Café CaNole was opened exclusively as a pastry shop. Geraldine Ferraro came to do the ribbon cutting on May 13, 1997, creating an amazing memory for the Nole family. Along with their individual degrees in the culinary arts, Dean was pleased to be able to share his additional hands on training he acquired while living and working in Italy, with Jason, and the two have become

and they just could not imagine accomplishing what they do without her! It became quickly apparent that the Café needed to expand its horizons to include food as well as pastries and by the second year of business lunch was added to the offerings. By the third year, the Nole’s added dinner two nights a week as well. In an effort to learn even more and to share the culture that he had been a part of and grew to love, Dean along with Jason, their Dad and four of their employees decided to take a trip to Italy together. Although the focus was on observing and absorbing more of that wonderful culture, they had an amazing trip enjoying the countryside together. A hand written note, taped to the

People who have been putting off eye examinations may want to call to schedule an appointment. That’s because vision checkups can do more than protect your eyes. By examining the eyes, doctors may have a window into health problems affecting other areas of the body.

as “allergic shiners,” also may indicate certain allergies. When clogged sinuses cause a blockage of blood flow in the nasal passages around the eye, darkness may result. This symptom in conjunction with persistent nasal congestion could be a sure sign of allergies.

Researchers recently discovered a link between detected retinal amyloid plaques and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. While evidence was found in lab mice, autopsies of at least eight Alzheimer’s disease patients have also shown amyloid plaques, which are known to interfere with memory and other mental functions, present in the retinas. Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., are gearing up for larger studies of humans to determine if an Alzheimer’s imaging technique can be perfected.

Dementia is not the only thing that doctors may be able to detect through an eye exam. Jaundice in the whites of the eyes may indicate liver disease, and early warning signs of diabetes may be detectable in the eyes. The American Academy of Opthalmology says the eye is the only place where doctors can see veins, arteries and a nerve without surgery, and eye examinations are increasingly being relied on to gauge overall health. The presence of bumpy, yellowish patches on the eyelid, known as xanthelasma palpebra, is a warning sign of high cholesterol, which is often initially diagnosed during a routine eye exam. Thyroid issues When the outer one-third of the brow (the part closest to the ear) begins to disappear on its own, this is a common sign of thyroid disease. The thyroid helps regulate metabolism, and thyroid hormones are essential to hair production. Hair loss may occur elsewhere, but is much more visible in the brows. Clogged arteries Blockages in the smaller veins in the retina may indicate clogs caused by arterial plaque. This will show up as a retinal occlusion in a visual exam. If blood vessels in the eyes are blocked, clogged arteries may be present elsewhere in the body, so a cardiology workup may be ordered. Bell’s palsy The inability to close one eye or to control tear production in that eye may be a sign of Bell’s palsy. This is a condition of the nervous system that controls facial muscles, causing temporary paralysis in one side of the face. Sometimes Bell’s palsy follows a viral or bacterial infection. n

How to make flossing easier for kids It is well known that a combination of brushing, flossing and periodic dental checkups are essential to oral health. Some parents teach their children to brush thoroughly early on, even taking them for dental visits at young ages so youngsters can become acclimated to the dentist’s office. But flossing is one component of oral hygiene that may be overlooked because many kids simply don’t enjoy it. Flossing cleans bacteria and trapped food from between the teeth. Brushing only reaches the surface of the teeth, but floss is required to get into the small crevices to prevent bacteria from turning into plaque buildup. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once per day. It is far better to floss once a day and do a thorough job rather than several times a day and miss areas of the mouth by doing it quickly. Children should be urged to floss regularly in addition to brushing. However, flossing can be cumbersome for youngsters who have yet to develop the dexterity needed to manipulate dental floss. There are many

products available and techniques that can be used to assist children with cleaning between their teeth. The following are some flossing tips for kids. * Begin the introduction to floss early. The younger children are introduced to floss, the more likely they are to embrace flossing as part of their oral hygiene routine. * Get the proper tools. Kids cannot floss unless they have floss products on hand. There are various age-appropriate flossers and types of dental floss available. Children may not be able to use dental floss properly because of a lack of dexterity. However, floss picks are much easier to hold and work between the teeth, particularly for kids with small hands. Floss should always be on hand, whether at home or when you go on vacation. * Let kids choose. Take kids down the dental aisle at the store and let them pick and choose which products they want to use. They may be more excited to brush and floss if they’re using something they picked out themselves.

* Lead by example. Children will be more likely to floss if they see their parents flossing. That means adults should floss regularly and let their children watch and learn. Benefits of flossing Removing bacteria and trapped food from teeth has a number of benefits. Bacteria can cause bad breath, but flossing and brushing helps to keep breath smelling fresh.

Plaque trapped between the teeth and along the gum line that leads to periodontal disease puts a person at a greater risk for heart disease. There are some studies that show bacteria from the mouth can end up in the bloodstream. Flossing is a necessary component of good oral hygiene. Everyone should floss, no matter their age, and children should begin flossing as soon as their mouth starts to fill out with pearly whites. n

The WELLNESS REVOLUTION… • 335-4174 By: Dr. Timothy J. DelMedico

w Hartford Shopping Center I have to laugh when I see the word “wellness” being tossed around so gingerly in recent years. It seems like everyone is hopping on the wellness wagon these days. Does anyone know what it really means? Is it “feeling good”? Is it “doing well”? How about “maximizing potential”? The almighty Wikipedia defines

it as, “Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being” and Wellness can also be described as “the constant, conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential.” Among the first healthcare

How to make your exercise routine eco-friendly Daily exercise is a great way for men and women to stay healthy and improve their quality of life. Studies have shown that men and women who include exercise as part of their regular routine have a lower risk for a host of ailments, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes. But exercise can benefit the planet as much as it can benefit people. The following are a handful of ways men and women can make their exercise routines more eco-friendly. * Start riding your bicycle. Riding a bicycle isn’t just for kids, as cycling has been linked to improved cardiovascular fitness and shown to be a great low-impact exercise for men and women with joint conditions. In addition, riding a bicycle is a great way to burn calories, even when riding at a leisurely pace. According to nutrition and fitness company NutriStrategy, a 205 lb. adult can expect to burn 372 calories during a 60-minute leisurely bike ride (less than 10 miles per hour), while the same person will burn just 233 calories during a slow walk for the same period of time. But cycling benefits the planet, too. Riding your bicycle to the

gym or to work each day saves fuel and can add years to the life of your vehicle, reducing the costly toll of producing and transporting new vehicles. Cycling has even become safer in recent years as more and more people have embraced cycling as a healthy and eco-friendly mode of transportation. For example, bike lanes have become the norm in heavily trafficked New York City, where the bustling metropolis’ transportation department reported a 289 percent increase in cycling from 2001 to 2011. So cycling is not only healthy and environmentally friendly, but it’s becoming safer as well. * Avoid bottled water. Whether you’re a competitive athlete or a weekend warrior, you’re going to need to replenish your body’s water supply at some point. Bottled water might seem more convenient in a pinch, but the personal and environmental costs of that convenience is considerable. Bottled water is more expensive than tap water, and those who prefer bottled water because they think it’s healthier than tap water should know that 70 percent of the bottled water produced in the United States never crosses state lines for sale,

Using probiotics to cure lactose intolerance Lactose intolerance is a result of the body’s inability to digest lactose, a sugar primarily found in milk that is broken down into glucose and galactose by an enzyme called lactase. The body’s inability to absorb lactose is caused by a deficiency of this enzyme. Lactose intolerance can affect some ethnic populations more than others. For example, this condition only affects 5 to 20 percent of Caucasian Americans or Northern Europeans. However, 60 to 80 percent of people of African descent are lactose intolerant, and within Asian populations, lactose intolerance is the rule rather than the exception, with 95 to 100 percent of people of Asian descent affected by this condition. Fortunately, all is not lost for those with lactose intolerance who still want to consume dairy

products. According to dietitian and nutritionist Annie Jolicoeur, the quality and quantity of your intestinal bacteria can play an important role in your ability to tolerate dairy products. By taking certain kinds of probiotics and consuming fermented dairy on a regular basis, you can improve, if not eliminate, many of the symptoms of lactose intolerance that come with eating dairy.

it provides probiotic complexes that are designed specifically for every age group: children up to the age of 15; adults (can be taken from the age of 15); and older adults (age 50 and up). More information and advice on probiotics is available at probaclac.ca. n

“According to several studies, some probiotic strains, such as Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, found, for example, in all Probaclac probiotic supplements, are known to help lactose digestion. These probiotics help to improve lactase synthesis in order to allow better lactose absorption,” explains Jolicoeur.

Peanut butter can be savory and healthy Peanut butter is often associated with school day sandwiches and sweet desserts. But peanut butter is not just for school lunch anymore. Though it’s a high-calorie food, peanut butter boasts many health benefits and can be added to recipes for a nutritional boost. Many of the calories in peanut butter come from fat, but the majority of the fats in peanut butter are monounsaturated and have been shown to improve cholesterol by lowering low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, in the blood. Furthermore, peanut butter contains polyunsaturated fats that can help raise high-density lipoprotein, or “good” cholesterol. As a result, when eaten in moderation, peanut butter may help reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. Peanuts are high in fiber and are an excellent source of protein. Vegetarians or those

An Eclectic American Bistro...

who do not include much meat in their diets may find that peanut butter, which includes eight grams of protein in every two-tablespoon serving, is a great way to consume their daily recommended amounts of protein. When preparing foods, choose a peanut butter that is as unprocessed as possible. The fewer the ingredients the better the health benefits. Some brands will include trans-fats and additional oils that can negate some of the natural health benefits. Read labels and look for a container that lists only ground peanuts and possibly trace amounts of salt for flavoring. The National Peanut Board touts the benefits of peanuts and has a number of different recipes available on their Web site at www.nationalpeanutboard.org. Here is a savory dish that can be served for dinner when the temperatures dip. n

Cellular Dehydration? What is it and do you have it? by Tina Lazarek, Studio 55

Pain occurs for a lot of reasons and as we all know, it’s easy to get into pain but tough to get out of it once it becomes chronic. Whether your pain started as an acute trauma, like a car accident, a fall, or a sports injury, or its been creeping up slowly due to aging, and illness, or even a side effect of medication. When pain becomes a chronic state, there is one common source. I call it “stuck stress”. Stuck stress is my way of saying there is dehydration in your connective tissue. The problem is most people haven’t heard of the connective tissue- let alone that it is an important element in our overall longevity or wellness. What science is starting

to recognize is that daily living, just teh repetition of our daily lives, the common postures and movements we engage in, cause our connective tissue system to break down on a cellular level. This causes our body’s natural efficiency and stability to decline. Connective tissue is everywhere, from your skin to your bones, in and around every muscle, joint and organ. It’s a three dimensional support sys-

tem that keeps everything in your body stable, balanced, and connected. It keeps your skin toned, your muscles balanced, it gives your joints shock absorption, and keeps your organs suspended properly so they function efficiently. It’s the untapped resource that’s unaddressed by diet and exercise. That’s why so many people that are leading healthy lives, people who do all the right things from eating a balanced diet to engaging in excercise still suffer from chronic pain. The cellular dehydration is a natural process that happens to every single person, every single day. It’s happening to everyone

Revive the art of letter-writing Getting a handwritten letter nowadays is extraordinary, as people often do not take the time to write letters in an age when emailing and texting have revolutionized the way people communicate. However, writing notes, letters and exclamations of love can be more intimate, especially on Valentine’s Day.

the effort to create a beautiful, handwritten letter, you can add to the experience by selecting a fine paper on which to write. There are many different types of paper, including some that are embossed. Some may even feature flower petals or leaves embedded in the paper. * Brush up on your penmanship. A letter will be rendered useless if it isn’t legible.

In France, love letters are called billet doux. The French are known to be romantics at heart, but that doesn’t mean people from all over the globe can’t put pen to paper to express their feelings. Handwritten letters are often seen as thoughtful gestures, especially when those letters are expressing intimate sentiment. Here are some guidelines for writing a love note or letter. * Visit a stationery store and find a nice piece of stationery and envelope to use for the letter. If you are putting forth

* For inspiration have a picture of the person to whom you will be addressing the letter nearby. * Jot down ideas on a piece of scrap paper. Think about how your partner makes you feel and the qualities that you find appealing, and use concrete examples why you love and care for this person. * Write a rough draft of the letter and be sure to proofread it for misspellings and grammatical errors. * Always write from the heart and be sincere in what you say. Try to call out specific examples that recall particularly fond

Genetically modified foods, or GMOs, have been a topic of heated conversation for the last several months. People have strong opinions on both sides of the GMO debate. In January 2014, retail giant General Mills decided to produce GMOFree Cheerios, one of its most popular and well-known cereals. This move now makes shopping for a GMO-free cereal that much easier. However, finding other products that do not contain GMOs may not be so simple, and consumers may have to do some research. Food companies in the United States are

not required to label foods to indicate use of GMOs. It is safe to assume that corn and soybeans produced in the United States are genetically modified. Papayas are often modified as well. Produce that has been genetically modified will have a bar code that starts with the digit “8.” One way to avoid GMOs is to buy only organic foods, which, in many instances, are GMO-free thanks to stringent regulations. In terms of other foods, it very well may be aguessing game. Speaking with a brand’s customer service department may be the best way to learn if they offer any GMO-free products. n

Baby Signing

by Nancy Jayne

Did you ever look into a baby’s eyes and wonder what they are thinking? Baby sign language can give you a way to find out. Baby signing is a means for infants and toddlers to communicate with you before they can speak. Before babies can verbally express themselves they are able to use their hands to make simple gestures (signs) to “talk” to you. Why should I use baby sign language?

•Signing increases a baby’s selfesteem and confidence because they know people can understand them. •Signing increases a baby’s vocabulary and language skills. •Signing increases a baby’s interest in books because they can help tell the story by signing the pictures.

No. There are many words your child may have trouble saying (i.e. elephant, giraffe, etc.). Signing the word gives your baby a way to talk to you about their interests.

Will baby signing delay their speech? No. Studies have shown that using sign language helps their speech development. When you sign with your baby, you also say the word. If your baby is ready to talk, your child will say the word. Otherwise, your baby can sign.

•Signing reduces frustration for you and baby because baby now has a means to tell you what they want.

For all of Life’s Moments

Is it too late to start if my baby is already saying some words?

•Signing builds a closer bond between you and baby.

•Signing gives baby a way to communicate their needs, wants and feelings before they can speak.

when he/she is 8-10 months old. If your baby is 8-12 months old, he/she may start signing back in 4 to 8 weeks. As babies develop at their own pace, they will also sign at their own pace.

Baby is signing “more” Is baby signing easy to learn?

Yes. Signing is as easy as waving “bye-bye”. You only need to learn as many signs as you want to use.

Signing gives babies a way to share their world with you. All we need to do is give them a sign to get them started. They will do the rest.

When should I start baby sign language? Many people start signing with their baby at around six months. Some start earlier and some start later. It all depends on when you are ready. When your baby starts clapping and waving bye-bye, he/she is beginning to have the motor skills to make signs. When will my baby sign back to me? 265 W. Dominick St. Rome 315-337-3100 26 PULSE pulsepointpress.com February 2014

It depends on many things, such as how old your baby is and how often he/she sees the sign. If your baby is 6-8 months old, your child may sign back

The Romans developed a 10 month calendar that began with the Spring equinox in March and ended in December. There is belief that what is now February was overlooked when this calendar was created, as winter weather had little to do with the harvest in the northern hemisphere, where Rome is located. Romans essentially considered the winter a period of time with no distinctive months.

January to make it 29 days long. February was left untouched, remaining an “unlucky” month and one devoted to honoring the dead and performing rites of purification, as the word February comes from februare, which means “to purify.” February remained the last month of the year for roughly 200 years until the calendar was reevaluated and February was reassigned as the second month, with January being the start of the new year.

At the time, even numbers were considered bad luck, and these months were not looked upon favorably by the king. So he decided to make changes once more and added a day to

February is the shortest month of the year, but many people have no idea why that is. February is the only month to have fewer than 30 days, but there is no scientific reason behind that distinction, though there have been various changes to the calendar throughout the centuries, and eventually February became what it is today.

When the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, took to the throne in 713 BC, he had plans to make the calendar more accurate by synchronizing it with the actual lunar year, which is roughly 354 days long.

This new 355-day calendar simply could not stay in sync with the seasons because it did not account for the amount of time it takes the Earth to orbit cont. on page 31

the sun. Therefore, an extra “month” of 27 days was added after February 23 each year to play catch-up. Sometimes this extra month was overlooked or not scheduled in time, continuing the calendar conundrum. Julius Caesar was responsible for tackling calendar problems further when he was in power. He wished to make the calendar solar-based, like the one Egyptians used, instead of the older lunar-based calendar. This led to the creation of the Julian calendar. Ten days were added to the calendar year in various months, and February was increased every four years (leap year) to 29 days to coordinate the calendar year to the solar cycle of roughly 365.2425 days. February remains the shortest month of the year. Through the years there has been no widespread attempt to reorganize the calendar once more to even out the months and give extra time to February. As a result of the shorter number of days, February has some unique attributes. In common years, February can pass without a single full moon. The next time this will happen is in 2018. Once every six years, February is the only month that has four, full seven-day weeks. February starts on the same day of the week as March and November in common years,

and on the same day of the week as August on leap years. February ends on the same day of the week as October every year. In leap years, it is the only month that begins and ends on the same weekday. People born on a leap year technically celebrate their birthday only once every four years, but most observe it on the 28th. Celebrities born on February 29 include Tony Robbins, Antonio Sabato, Jr., Mervyn Warren, and Dennis Farina.

Despite its status as the shortest month, February is packed with many events, including Valentine’s Day and Groundhog’s Day. Americans celebrate the birth of two presidents in February, as well as Black History Month. Mexicans celebrate Flag Day in February, while residents of St. Lucia celebrate their Independence Day. February is also a time for families, especially in Canada, where Family Day is celebrated on the third Monday of the month in many provinces. February is also an important month for sports fans, as two teams will face each other in the Super Bowl on the first Sunday of February. No one really knows for certain why February was relegated to the shortest month. However, with so much trivia and special events surrounding the month, it is still a special time of year. n

Exercise benefits the brain, too Regular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping men and women maintain healthier weights and lower their risks for developing potentially deadly diseases. Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brain power. According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of “Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter,” exercise has a direct impact on the brain. That’s because exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. So while many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits as well.

researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy, or a placebo pill. Those in the exercise and antidepressant groups had higher rates of remission than those in the placebo group, and Blumenthal concluded that exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants for men and women with major depressive disorder. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active.

The following are just a few of the mental benefits men and women might reap from regular exercise.

Blumenthal’s study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood. In a review of 11 studies that examined the effects of exercise on mental health, Boston University professor of psychology Michael Otto and his colleagues found that exercise could be a powerful tool when treating clinical depression, and even recommended clinicians include exercise as part of their treatment plans for depressed patients.

Antidote to anxiety

Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill don’t just pay short-term dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University

and dizziness to occur. Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants withheightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who particicont. on page 35

Caution necessary when using saunas Many men and women enjoy sitting in a sauna after particularly grueling workouts. That’s especially true for those who suffer from chronic pain, as heat has long been used as a remedy for muscle aches and pains, with some studies indicating that warm, moist heat can raise endorphin levels in the brain and nervous system while simultaneously decreasing stress hormone levels.

uncertain about sauna usage and the potential impact of such usage on their health should consult their physicians before using saunas.

Though some dispute the health benefits of saunas, many agree that saunas are safe for many people. Harvey Simon, M.D., a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the editor in chief of Harvard Men’s Health Watch, advises that those with poorly controlled blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, unstable angina, and advanced heart failure or heart valve disease stay cool and avoid saunas. In addition, pregnant women, who risk raising their body temperature and suffering from fainting spells or heat exhaustion when spending time in a sauna, and children should avoid saunas entirely. * Stay hydrated. It’s easy to become dehydrated when spending time in a sauna, and dehydration can lead to heat stroke if sauna users don’t replenish themselves with liquid. This is why it’s important for sauna users to stay hydrated when using a sauna and to drink several glasses of water after each sauna session. Many people like saunas because they feel they sweat out any toxins or heavy metals within the body while in the sauna. Though some evidence exists to support that theory, the body is not only losing those harmful things like toxins and metals while in the sauna but also lots of water. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating

* Steer clear of the sauna if you are on medications or if you have consumed alcohol. Alcohol and certain medications can impair sweating, increasing a person’s risk of overheating before and after a sauna session. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning the more alcohol a person consumes, the more likely that person is to urinate and lose water as a result. Water in the body is essential for men and women using a sauna. Without sufficient water in their bodies, men and women won’t be able to produce adequate sweat and will put themselves at risk of overheating. This is why it’s also beneficial for men and women to avoid saunas the morning after they consume alcohol, when the body might still be mildly or even significantly dehydrated from the previous night’s alcohol consumption.

* Allow the body to cool down after using the sauna. Many people do not have saunas in their homes and therefore only use public saunas, such as those in gyms or spas. When using a public sauna, men and women may prefer to take a hot or warm shower immediately after exiting the sauna. But the body needs to cool down gradually after it’s been in a sauna, so men and women must resist the temptation to jump right into a cold shower after exiting the sauna. Instead, men and women should put on a robe when they leave the sauna and allow their bodies to cool before taking a shower. n

Who has not heard the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? It may seem unlikely that one fruit could be so effective at maintaining good health, but apples really are a super food.

Apples are a member of the Rose family and are related to pears, peaches, apricots and plums. Though considered a fall fruit, apples can be enjoyed year-round. Apart from being sweet, sometimes sour and refreshingly crisp, apples pack a number of nutritional benefits. Research has shown that apples can help to reduce a person’s risk of heart disease and help those with diabetes. In addition, apples can help fight cancer and prevent dental problems.

38 PULSE pulsepointpress.com February 2014

According to new information from long-running studies published in the British Medical Journal, eating at least two servings a week of whole fruit, particularly apples, blueberries or grapes, reduces a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes by around 23 percent. Apples are high in many antioxidants and, as a result, this makes them especially valuable at fighting illness. Apples also are very high in fiber. Fiber is needed to help a person feel full and can also regulate digestive function. Fiber also can help reduce cholesterol by preventing the buildup of cholesterol-causing plaques in the blood vessels, improving

cardiovascular function and possibly reducing risk of a stroke as a result. In addition, apples can have a noticeable impact on physical appearance as well. Apples are sometimes referred to as “nature’s toothbrushes” because they can brighten and clean the teeth. The crisp, abrasive texture stimulates the gums and removes debris. What’s more, the natural mild acidity of apples helps to stimulate saliva production that can rinse away germs that lead to plaque. An apple weighs in at under 100 calories per serving, making them a low-fat and ideal snack any time of the day. Because they are low in calories and full of fiber, apples can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. There are more than 7,000 varieties of apples on the market today. With such variety, availability and health benefits, apples make a convenient and nutritious snack. n

Clean produce properly to avoid contaminants The demand for fresh produce has increased in recent years as more people are turning to fresh fruits and vegetables for their nutritional value. That increase in demand has forced many suppliers to import more produce from other countries, which could be putting consumers’ health at risk. Although the United States may have stringent standards for produce, many other countries do not. Less stringent regulations overseas can result in irrigation water carrying sewage, pollutants and parasites to crops, and herbicides and pesticides may be used in abundance in foreign countries where such usage is subject to little, if any, oversight. Fewer regulations means some farms pay more attention to profit than to the purity and safety of crops. The Pure Food Growers of America states that the average American consumes more than 10 pounds of insecticides and herbicides every year from produce. Many of these substances are proven carcinogens. Thoroughly washing and soaking fresh produce is the key to removing potential hazards from foods. Organic fruits and vegetables may be less risky, but even organic foods are susceptible to contamination because of potentially unsafe handling practices. All produce should be washed before eaten. Before cleaning produce, stock up on a few supplies. You will need a large plastic bowl, some apple cider vinegar or baking soda and a produce brush. Add enough cool water to cover the produce you will be washing. Add either three tablespoons per gallon of water of the vinegar to the bowl or sprinkle about three tablespoons of the baking soda into the water. It’s best not to mix both the vinegar and the baking soda, or you may end up with a foaming, overflowing concoction thanks to the chemical reaction

Locally Owned for 30 Years

that occurs when vinegar mixes with baking soda. Add the vegetables or fruit to the treated water and allow it to soak for around 10 minutes. Use a vegetable brush to thoroughly scrub the produce. Some foods, like celery and lettuce, have dirt or bugs trapped in their ribs and folds. Soaking and scrubbing can dislodge any bugs. Instead of washing the entire head at once, wash lettuce leaves as they are used to retain the vitamins and minerals.
