AIESEC GDUFS  INTRODUCTION  GUANGZHOU CITY City Center

Introducing Guangzhou

Yuexie: Cradle for the Cantonese culture, it has

been the city center since the imperial era.

Guangzhou, known as Canton, is a modern, vigorous metropolis. It is the third largest city in China and is the political, economic, sci-tech, educational and cultural hub of southern China. It is located in south-central Guangdong Province, north of the Pearl River Delta. It lies close to the South China Sea, Hong Kong and Macau. Pearl River (Zhujiang), the third longest river in China runs through the city and is navigable to the South China Sea. These geographical features bestow the name "South Gate of China" upon the city.

Liwan: On the north of the pearl river makes up the old Guangzhou area and home to the standard Cantonese accent. Tianhe: It is the business district, thriving with many skyscrapers and shopping malls.

Language Helps Local language Because the standard language in China is mandarin, you can communicate with people in mandarin in Guangzhou. But most of locals here are saying Cantonese, and being able to say Cantonese is a crucial symbol of adapting to the culture of Guangzhou.  Tips Shamian is a good place for tourists to take photo,if you are a shutterbug, the places as follows are recommended: a. Sha Mian Bei Jie b. The Bank of Taiwan(26 Shamian St Liwan):a historical place c. Zhujiang River:glittering water d. Our Lady of Lourdes Church:the most popular church to take photo

Shamian Island 沙面 Shamian, is an elliptic sandbar in the Liwan District of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. The island's name literally means "sandy surface" in Chinese. Surrounded by water, it is just like a giant ship mooring alongside the wharf. Get further and one will find that the island is carefully planned. Three east-west avenues, Shamian Avenue, Shamian North Avenue and the South Avenue, and five north-south streets, Shamian Street 1 to the Street 5 divide the whole area into 12 parts, with various buildings, namely White Swan Hotel, Shamian Hotel, and Poland Consulate in Guangzhou, scattered around. Shamian is a good place for a stroll. As it is just 900m long from east to west and 300m from south to north, one will not feel tired even after walking around the island twice. Due to traffic control on the island, it showcases a different atmosphere and pace of living. Problems such as traffic jams and exhaust gas pollution don't exist here. Now partly reserved for pedestrians, its broad boulevards are like long gardens topiaries. A line of bars and cafes on the southwest side with views over the Pearl River serves modern expats. 

Pearl River 珠江 At 2,214 kilometers (about 1,376 miles) long, the Pearl River is the third largest river in China and the largest one in Guangzhou. It is so called because it contains a stone island resembling a huge pearl, polished by the constantly-flowing water of the river. Night View of the river. One can not be considered to have visited Guangzhou if he hasn't cruised the scenic Pearl River. Views along the river in Guangzhou City are charming and gentle. Historical sites and unique architecture scattered along the river are numerous and are a goodly reflection of the Guangzhou culture. Compared with the daytime cruise on the river, the night cruise is even more fascinating under the sparkling lights. It starts from the White Goose Pool and ends at the Guangzhou Bridge in the east and Baihedong (White Crane Cave) in the south. This section offers visitors vistas such as 'Night Moon over the Goose Pool' and 'Red Heart of the Pearl River'. Every visitor will be captivated by the beauty of the Pearl River during this two-hour evening cruise. 

Canton Tower, at 610 meters counting the 156 meter antenna that sits atop the 454 meter tower proper (which is the consensus on how to measure the total height of a tower), is currently the world's tallest tower, and given its unique construction, which facilitates "building high", Canton Tower will likely remain the tallest tower for some time, unless someone comes up with a building design that is even more clever than that of Canton Tower (note that Canton Tower is the world's tallest tower, not the world's tallest building... there is a limit to the size of the base of an edifice that can qualify as a tower rather than as a building – to satisfy your curiosity, the world's tallest building is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, standing at 828 meters, including its spire).

AIESEC GDUFS  INTRODUCTION  GUANGZHOU CITY Open today: 7:00 am – 11:30 pm Comments from foreigners: The most famous part about this restaurant is the name plaque. It contained the original hand written carving by a famous Chinese scholar who was a friend of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and was closely involved with the revolution that brought down the Qing Dynasty. The name plague survived all the wars and now hangs proudly in the front lobby. The name ‘Tao Tao’ was actually fashioned about the concubine of the owner with a slight modification so it would not offend anyone. It was a very famous restaurant where all the famous people would go. It also served dim sum after 9 pm, a pretty unique feature. We went there for night dim sum and were really disappointed. The food was not very good and limited. Both the dim sum and tea served were expensive and one has to line up and get whatever comes out from the kitchen. So skip the food, just go in and take a picture as a tourist. The staff are only too eager to help, service is flawless and the rates are great. This is one place you just can’t miss.  Snacks 特色小吃 Guangzhou's snack cuisine consists of a wide spectrum of choices which are roughly classified into seven varieties: oil-fried small dishes; porridges; rice noodles; cakes; sweets; glutinous rice dumplings and variety of small
