Ring of Fire – Part II, Closing the Loop Begin the adventure with Ring of Fire – Part I
Since they began their "cyclovolcanic" quest in 1999, Pierre and Janick have pedaled more than 53,000 kilometers. Now, in 2008, all that remains is to link the volcanoes of Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii.

Yuzhno-Kamchatsky Nature Park in Russia
"Nine years ago, la Niña stacked the odds against us as we were preparing to leave. Now on the verge of coming full circle, global climatic phenomena are troubling us again. The access roads to the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt and the Hurley Pass are completely blanketed in massive amounts of snow." The last time MEC updated their progress, they were in Taiwan, trying to get into Japan. "Our tour of a dozen active volcanoes lasted more than eight months and required four visits. From the cones of the Ibusuki field to the island of Rishiri to Sakurajima, Uzen-dake, Fuji-san, Ontake, Asama-yama, Bandai-san, Tokachi, Daisetsu-san and the Akan Caldera, we enjoyed the rugged landscape and immersed ourselves in the enchanting culture. Besides warm and friendly residents, we discovered that hiking and biking are the cheapest and most rewarding ways to discover the Land of the Rising Sun".

Between their four stays in Japan, they made a quick trip home to Quebec to spend the holidays with their families, and took a side-trip to the volcanoes of Micronesia. While on the Northern Marianas Islands, they pedaled on the abandoned airstrip of the American Air Force base of Tinian, the site where atomic bombs were launched against Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A few weeks later, they travelled to Nagasaki, and stood only a kilometer from the location the 4545kg of plutonium was detonated.

"Moving north from here, it took us the whole summer to comb the accessible areas of Kamchatka and the Kurile Islands," says Pierre. Describing their travels through far eastern Russia as difficult would be an understatement. You might think it was the incessant mosquito attacks on the taiga, or the threat of riding through the world's densest grizzly population that slowed their progress. But, the greatest adversity came from red tape, and the security officers who turned down successive requests for permits. With luck, perseverance, and some flexible interpretation of the rules, they finally made it to the most majestic and active volcanoes on their tour, and were able to cross the entire Kamchatka peninsula.

When we last spoke to them, they were waiting in Vancouver to begin. "As soon as the access roads are clear and we have the green light from the Forest Service, we'll start our wheels turning to close up the loop." Follow Pierre and Janick's progress at www.pedalmag.com
