MEMBER PROFILE, PAUL BETTIS

Welcome

I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you a very Happy New Year! We’re looking forward to another successful twelve months as 2015 saw member growth rise above expectation, with just over 3,800 installation businesses accredited nationally. We now represent the largest independent network of KBB installation specialists in the UK and have even launched a dedicated magazine for them! New Installation Standards Partners Omega PLC and Symphony Group PLC joined existing partners at B&Q, Bathstore and John Lewis, providing even more weight to the campaign and credibility to the iKBBI. We also launched our national network of independent inspectors, providing key onsite technical support for new government legislation and continued our relationship with The Furniture Ombudsman. We announced exciting news about our work in the field of installation apprenticeships and a new strategic partnership with PROCAT, the groundbreaking College of Advanced Technology in the South East. We have focussed on consumer protection in a number of ways too by forming relationships with The Gas Safe Register and the consumer giant Which? All-in-all, 2015 was a great year for us and I’d like to thank our members, sponsors, partners and associates for their continued support of our organisation and its objectives. Believe it or not, 2016 marks our 10th anniversary since launch and we have a number of events planned for this year to mark the milestone. For example, we are exhibiting at three key events this year: KBB Birmingham (March), Installer Live (May) and UK Construction Week (October). We’ve also committed to support The Scottish Home Improvement Awards following last years launch. We’ll be finalising work on our Consumer Protection Insurance Policy, as well as strengthening the infrastructure with the formation of a non-exec board and standards panel. It’s fair to say, we have a busy year ahead! Once again, many thanks for your support and here’s to a happy, healthy and successful 2016. issue 4 - winter 2016

INDUSTRY GIANT SYMPHONY GROUP PLC IS UNVEILED AS THE LATEST INSTALLATION STANDARDS PARTNER 2015 proved to be a monumental year for the iKBBI and it looks as though 2016 will prove equally as constructive with the announcement that kbb manufacturing giant the Symphony Group has become an official Installation Standards Partner. Symphony is the UK's largest privately owned manufacturer of fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture, with a turnover exceeding £100 million. Its customers include private developers, social housing providers, hoteliers and independent retailers throughout the UK and overseas. Driven by a quest for an unmatched quality of service, Symphony has invested heavily in systems and technology to help deliver ‘right first time service, every time,’ and the business believes its support of the iKBBI Installation Standards Initiative will not only strengthen its own proposition, but will also contribute massively to the wider installation community.

“As a major brand in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom industry, we’re committed to offering the highest standards of installation in every project." Speaking on behalf of Symphony, Robert Williamson, Retail National Business Development Manager (pictured), said: “As a major brand in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom industry, we’re committed to offering the highest standards of installation in every project. Becoming an iKBBI Installation Standards Partner is the perfect fit for Symphony which, we believe, demonstrates our dedication to delivering a ‘right, first time, every time’ service. We are looking forward to working together in the future and having a long and productive relationship.”

iKBBI CEO Damian Walters added: “We’re delighted that a mega-brand like Symphony has chosen to support the Installation Standards Partnership as the success of the initiative is dependent on great brands joining forces to support a common goal. Improved installation standards and the support of professional installers are crucial for our industry, not only for today but for the

short, medium and long term future.” Damian added: “2015 was a great year for the iKBBI with unprecedented member growth, continued association with some of the industry’s most respected brands, a new magazine and our apprenticeship announcement to name a few milestones. The iKBBI reaches its 10th anniversary in April 2016, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved during this time.”

MAKE SURE YOU ARE GAS WISE-LIVES AND YOUR LIVELIHOOD DEPEND ON IT The Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installers has formed a strategic partnership with Capita who operates the Gas Safe Registration scheme. The agreement between the two organisations aims to promote gas safety awareness to consumers, installers and the wider KBB sector. The initiative is invaluable in that it will underpin good practice where lives and individual's well-being could be put at risk as badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. Commenting on the partnership, Damian Walters, iKBBI CEO said: “It’s vital that not just our members, but all KBB installers are aware of their legal obligations where gas is concerned. As an institute, we have a responsibility to educate our members and their customers on the vital subject of gas safety in the home.”
Representing the Gas Safe Register, Stakeholder Manager Abrar Hussain Aziz, said “Gas Safe Register has replaced Corgi and is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances and, by law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. Its essential that consumers only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, 6

fix or service their appliances and they should always check the engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card.” Abrar continued: “We are delighted that the iKBBI, given its leading position in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom installation sector, understands the importance of promoting this good practice. Together, our organisations will work hard to educate consumers that any work on gas appliances MUST only be undertaken by a Gas Safe registered engineer.”

A DECADE OF CHANGE

The iKBBI celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, following the launch of the organisation in 2006. Already committed to KBB Birmingham in March, the institute will also be supporting Installer Live in May and UK Construction Week in October as it embarks on a national engagement campaign to raise awareness for itself, its members and its Installation Standards Partners. Commenting on the milestone, Institute CEO Damian Walters said: “It’s been a tough ten years, there’s absolutely no doubt about that, but we’re pleased with our current positioning and indeed the overall proposition for all key stakeholders.” The Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installers now represents the largest network of independently accredited specialist KBB installers in the UK with over 3,800 registered members nationally. Additionally, it works with a number of highprofile retailers including B&Q, Bathstore and John Lewis, as well as major manufacturers Omega and Symphony Group. Damian went on to say: “The industry was far from being in great shape ten years ago, especially considering the economic situation that developed in 2007. Despite government funding drying up before we launched, we worked hard and smart for the first five years, ensuring longevity of the organisation was protected. Though no longer with the iKBBI, my fellow founders Gordon Smith and Drew Carter played a significant role in the success

8

www.ikbbi.org.uk

and I would like to publicly thank them for their dedication and commitment, arguably during the ‘challenging early years’. That said, the recent successes are as a result of a small, but effective team of people that work hard for the cause.” 2015 was a significant year for the organisation with several key achievements including new relationships with The Furniture Ombudsman, The Gas Safe Register and consumer champion Which? The launch of the inspection initiative will also "prove pivotal moving forward” said Damian, "as well our continued work on the apprenticeship project in conjunction with PROCAT collage.” Support from its sponsors must also be recognised, with founding sponsors Blum, Franke and Classic Marble committed from the start in particular. Damian said: “Without the early support from these businesses, it’s almost certain that the organisation would have struggled to continue. They are an important bunch and I’m delighted our relationship with them remains strong, together with their commitment confirmed for the foreseeable future.” Current sponsors include the founding three, plus Currys PC World, Festool, Tradepoint, Trade-Up Kitchens, Hippo, Stress Free Media and UK Special Risks. Damian added: “The journey is by no means complete. We’ve a long way to go with plenty still to do. We must continually review our proposition, ensuring we meet the needs of our members and those consumers who invest in our industry. Not only is consumer protection important, but the protection of those specialist installation businesses and their experience is crucial. Bringing a new generation of installers through apprenticeships is vital and we will work incredibly hard to ensure this becomes a reality over the next few years, working alongside those who share our vision and objectives."

APPRENTICESHIP UPDATE Following our announcement last year, the iKBBI have begun the research and development stage of its exciting new relationship with Prospects College of Advance Technology (PROCAT). Over a two week period in February, the iKBBI will be holding a number of sessions with those students currently working towards a construction based apprenticeship, engaging around a thousand students over the sessions. The objective of the initial piece of work will be to engage those already on the apprenticeship journey, making them aware of the KBB industry and the career options available today. The second stage of the initiative will be to better understand the needs of the students, which will eventually be used to shape future bolt on modules and the eventual launch of the iKBBI Centre of Excellence which will be based at the Basildon campus. iKBBI Comms Manager Denise Mayell said: “It’s incredibly exciting times and we’re pleased that the college is keen to make the initiative happen. Phil Clarke, Head of Faculty at the college, is a great supporter of the iKBBI’s objectives and indeed the need for a nationally available apprenticeship for would-be KBB installers.” Further updates will be available via iKBBI social media platforms Facebook & LinkedIn – search “officialikbbi.”

NEW PHONE SYSTEM INSTALLED

To support a growing number of telephone enquiries, the iKBBI has introduced a new telephone system which is capable of queuing callers at peak times, recording for training and monitoring purposes and providing callers with a better experience when contacting the institute generally. The new contact number for all iKBBI enquiries is 01375 659 524, all other contact details remain the same.

BUILDERS AND PLUMBERS MERCHANTS MARKET SEES ONGOING RECOVERY The latest report from AMA Research shows that the builders and plumbers merchants market saw ongoing strong recovery in 2015 despite a slight dip in growth rate compared with 2013 and 2014, which saw growth of 6% and 9% respectively following a period of poor market performance. Growth for the market in 2015 is expected to sit at 4%, according to AMA Research. In 2014/15, merchant sales were estimated to account

for 9% of total construction output. Plumbing and drainage made up around 17% of products offered by merchants and heating and ventilation accounted for 15%. “The impact of the construction downturn was initially more significant for the merchants, with DIY outlets benefiting from consumers switching major home improvement projects in favour of lighter DIY tasks,” said AMA Research director Keith Taylor.

“However, since 2013 the merchants have performed better than the DIY multiples, benefiting from the significant growth seen in housebuilding and some non-domestic new work in particular and also the growth in house prices driving the residential refurbishment sector,” Taylor added. GROHE TO LAUNCH 2016 WORK SMARTER TOUR Grohe has announced that it will be launching the 2016 edition of its Work Smarter Tour in May, and will visit 11 locations across the UK, including the Installer 2016 show at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 10th-12th May. As with the 2015 event, the company says that the focus on the tour will be on “imparting professional expertise”, with the aim of helping installers become familiar with Grohe's products. According to Grohe, its Work Smarter Tour in 2015 was a great success with more than 800 industry players visiting its mobile showroom across 21 locations. During the tour, Grohe will be showcasing its Smart programme, which allows installers to collect points for purchased products that can then be turned into rewards such as power tools and clothing. The company will also run a competition throughout the tour with Grohe products as the prizes. “The Work Smarter Tour allows Grohe to interact with installers and provide them

with the necessary training for installation of Grohe products,” said UK Training Manager Michael Gray. “In 2016, through the Work Smarter Tour, Grohe hopes to provide as many installers as possible with the necessary training and hopes to achieve this in a fun and positive atmosphere.” www.ikbbi.org.uk

DOES YOUR INSURANCE POLICY COVER YOUR BUSINESS PROPERLY? So, what should you be looking out for? It is prudent to have a good look over your policy at least once a year, but many do not fully understand the insurance jargon, terms and conditions. Some key points to look out for include: Michael Barratt Cert CII, Account Executive, UK Special Risks

UK Special Risks has been insuring kitchen, bedroom and bathroom manufacturers, retailers and installers for over 10 years, exclusively partnering with the iKBBI nearly 4 years ago when it became apparent that some brokers were not offering members adequate and appropriate cover when it came to their business insurances. Since our partnership began, our mission has been to tailor a policy that suits the day-to-day requirements of iKBBI members. We have a variety of options for you to choose from and whilst we are not always the cheapest, with insurance you do very much get what you pay for! So how well do you know your policy? Have you been through your current policy or just assumed it is correct because you have answered all the broker’s questions? Most, just go along with it and hope it is correct (let’s be honest, you have better things to do!). This approach is fine if the broker fully understands your business and therefore your requirements.

16

www.ikbbi.org.uk

• Number of Manual Workers • Turnover • Accidental and Unforeseen Exposure to Asbestos • Height Limit • Use of Heat • Business Description (are all the elements of your business listed here?) Public Liability – The Common misperception… what are you covered for? Some people believe that Public Liability covers them for poor workmanship. This is not the case. Public Liability insurance covers you for any damages or injuries caused by your work. For example, if during a kitchen installation you are using a blow torch to weld pipework and set fire to the property, that is a Public Liability claim. If your client trips over your toolbox and injures themselves, that is a Public Liability claim. If you are tiling the floor and the tiles aren't level and need to be pulled up and re-layed, that is poor workmanship and is not covered under Public Liability insurance.

So what separates UK Special Risks from other brokers? Mainly, our cover levels. We are in the minority when it comes to offering cover for accidental and unforeseen exposure to asbestos, something which you may not think about insuring yourself for. Drilling into walls and ceilings? Then you may wish to consider whether you should be holding this cover. A few years ago we had a client who accidentally released asbestos into the environment, resulting in a claim worth tens of thousands of pounds. Luckily, the claim was covered under his policy with ourselves. If they hadn't had this cover in place, the cost to his business could have been severe. We also offer either stand-alone policies or packages to cover Professional Indemnity insurance. This could be beneficial if you do any design work as part of your contracts. I am personally part of the iKBBI’s voluntary consultation panel, which meets twice a year to discuss hot topics in the industry and help to find resolutions. If you would like us to quote for your business insurance at renewal, or if you would just like to discuss something on your current policy and make use of our advisory services, please do not hesitate to contact us.

DON’T FALL FOUL OF THE NEW CONSUMER RIGHTS ACT! iKBBI associate Which? Trusted Traders examines the new Consumer Rights Act 2015. The Consumer Rights Act became law on 1 October 2015 and simplified, strengthened and modernised UK consumer legislation. The new legislation consolidates three big pieces of consumer law – the Sale of Goods Act, the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations and the Supply of Goods and Services Act. Whilst some of the language hasn’t changed that much, the remedies have, so let’s drill down to what the changes mean and how they will affect those in the kbb installer market.

Firstly goods, as an installer you have to ensure that these are: •

of satisfactory quality

fit for any particular purpose

must match descriptions or samples

be correctly installed (where agreed as part of the contract).

Where goods don’t meet the above, the consumer will now have a tiered remedy system that includes: • A 30 day short-term right to reject where a full refund can be sought and the refund must be given within 14 days of it being agreed (this right does not apply to faulty installations). • If the consumer chooses not to exercise the above right or is outside of the 30 days then they are entitled to claim for a repair or replacement, but the locksmith will only be given one opportunity to repair the goods, after that if the goods are still faulty then they can be rejected. • If a repair or replacement is not available, for example because an item is no longer in stock, then the consumer has the final right to reject the goods. • If the faulty goods caused additional damage to persons or property then there is a right to additional compensation.

18

www.ikbbi.org.uk

Legal Advice

As for evidence, if the consumer uses the short-term right to reject option they must demonstrate that the goods are faulty. Within six months the consumer also has the right to ask for a repair, replacement, price reduction or even the final right to reject faulty goods and the law assumes that the goods were faulty at the time of delivery. After six months the consumer must prove the goods were faulty at the time of purchase, this is known as the ‘reverse burden of proof’. So, what about services? Again the language is familiar, as an installer you must ensure the job is carried out with reasonable care and skill. Anything written or verbally agreed with the consumer is binding. If no price was agreed beforehand, then only a reasonable price can be charged. Likewise, if no specific time for completion was agreed then you are obliged to carry it out within a reasonable time period. The main change here is the remedy, consumers will have the right to a ‘repeat performance’ if the job isn’t done correctly the first time, or they can ask for a price reduction. Whilst, you the installer, can make repeated attempts at getting the job done correctly you have to ensure it doesn’t cause significant inconvenience to the customer. If the job cannot be carried out satisfactorily then the customer can seek a price reduction that leads to a full refund. Finally, unfair terms; previously business to consumer contracts were subject to the old Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 and this included all those items of small print in consumer contracts. The new act has replaced them with a requirement for terms and contract notices to be fair making it easier for

consumers to challenge hidden fees and charges. A term is unfair if ‘contrary to the requirement of good faith, it causes a significant imbalance in the party’s rights and obligations under the contract to the detriment of the consumer’. In other words if what you say is all in your favour and not the consumer’s then it will probably be regarded as unfair. The new Consumer Rights Act details a blacklist of terms that will always be unfair and a ‘grey list’ that highlights terms that may be potentially unfair. The grey list is a list of terms where a suspicion of unfairness arises if a term has the object or effect of weighting terms unfairly against the consumer. Stephen McCluskey, Managing Director at Which? Trusted Traders comments “Consumer law was crying out to be brought up to date to cope with the requirements and demands of today’s consumers. Getting a refund or repair and understanding contracts should now be much simpler. Business and traders must ensure their teams are aware of the changes so they’re not caught shortchanging their customers or breaking the law.” To support the new legislation, installers endorsed by Which? Trusted Traders will receive a free guide to the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or you can visit: www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights-act

COOKING UP A TREAT The oven has to be one of the most fundamental appliances in the kitchen but it can often be rather boggling for consumers to weigh up the different options and pick the right product. Having someone that can offer some basic advice in where to start by outlining the key choices can be a great help. We’ve caught up with some of the leading brands to give an overview on built-in ovens. It’s a good idea to start at the beginning and consider what the main options are before looking further at programmes and features. There are different sizes and capacities also to consider, but that may be more of a planning and perhaps budget issue.

V-ZUG’s ovens with retractable handle

There’s an array of choice out there for anyone looking into buying a new oven. Marketing Manager at CDA, Steve Corbett, suggests: “It’s important to provide a range of ovens that offer every customer the perfect cooking solution. Each home is different and choosing the ideal oven is key to making the kitchen work for the whole family.”

Traditionally there have been two main types of built-in cooking ovens; conventional or fan. Kitchen Product Manager at Miele, Richard Treffler, describes: “Conventional ovens heat in the middle, so the temperature at the top tends to be hotter and cooler at the bottom. This type of oven can take a while to reach temperature and so pre-heating is recommended.” He continues, “Fan ovens work by using a circular heating element with a fan, which is usually placed at the back of the oven. The use of the fan helps the temperature to be more even and also allows faster heat up times.”

"Each home is different and choosing the ideal oven is key to making the kitchen work for the whole family.” An increasingly popular style of cooking is with steam and this can be from a specialist steam only oven, or a combisteam oven which brings together the features of a fan oven with that of a steam oven, generally in either 45cm or 60cm options.

Sales Director UK & Ireland at V-ZUG UK, Rhys Evans, explains: “Steam cooking in an oven is very different to standard cooking techniques. The steam evenly distributes in the cavity and condenses when it encounters the food. The heat energy of the steam is transferred to the food which is gently heated, helping to retain the vitamins, minerals and the food's natural flavour. A key benefit is that when the food reaches the temperature of the steam, it no longer condenses. This means that the food cannot scorch, making it very difficult to overcook food.” He adds, “Steam cooking is also probably

The Installers Choice There’s something a bit more satisfying when fitting something of unmistakable quality.

V-ZUG not only manufactures appliances that the enduser will enjoy but appliances that make it a pleasure for installers too. First of all there’s the sheer build quality of the appliance, we’re not talking low-end here, and then there’s the ease of installation with the support of a clear concise installation and fitting guide, on-line access including diagnosis for any rare problems and its all backed up by an unrivalled in house after-sales-service too.

the best method of cooking for nutrition. You can benefit from a vitamin content that is 22% higher and up to 36% less fat than other cooking methods.” As steam cooking is still fairly new in the UK, people don’t often realise the full potential of what these ovens can offer. Richard elaborates: “Steam combination ovens offer great cooking flexibility. They use a combination of dry, radiant heat and moisture to prepare a variety of different dishes including fish, rice, pasta and vegetables to proving breads, roasts, desserts and sauces.” Rhys also points out; “Not many people are aware that steam can also be used for baking. Our Professional Baking programme uses a combination of steam and hot air to create bread, rolls and even puff pastries. It delivers beautifully risen, light and golden baked goods every time.” There are also advanced steam cooking techniques that many professional chefs utilise that consumers can take advantage of at home. Rhys explains: “Vacuum cooking (also known as sous-vide) is a method of cooking food in vacuum sealed bags in a steam or combi-steam oven. It’s a cooking technique which is employed as it precisely controls the flavour, texture, freshness and appearance of the food, to create restaurant worthy dishes. This 24

technique has been around for many years but chefs like Heston Blumenthal have really brought attention to this technique.”

A further option in the built-in oven category has also recently been presented with combi-steam ovens with integrated microwave functionality. Rhys highlights: “We live in a society where everybody wishes they had more time to do things they enjoy, but because of time constraints, they are craving smart and innovative cooking appliances to help them through their busy day. Our CombiSteam MSLQ microwave can save the user up to a third of the cooking time, which means that healthy and delicious dinners can be whipped up even when time is short.” www.vzug.com www.miele.co.uk www.rangemaster.co.uk

BMA Matters

THE EUROPEAN WATER LABEL IN 2015, A YEAR OF RAPID PROGRESS AND EXCEEDED TARGETS The European Water Label is growing rapidly. Its reputation is reaching the farthest corners of Europe and its database of premium bathroom and kitchen branded products has grown to such a size that it has become the most dominant product labelling scheme of its type. Yvonne Orgill, Managing Director of EWL, in her recently published Annual Review, indicated her delight with the progress of this voluntary and value-led scheme. “2015 proved to be a turning point in the development of our product label. The scheme grew very rapidly this year. It now covers 14 different bathroom product categories and embraces the national nuances of 38 countries. It is already available in three languages (and there will be more) and boasts over 11,000 different products, from 98 brands, in its database. To end the year, the scheme was presented with its 5th Award, this time from SWIG, the Sustainable Water Industry Group. Needless to say we are delighted how the label progressed this year.

online database proceeded as usual in 2015. A selection of 275 products across 36 registered brands were independently tested by four European test laboratories. Checks were also made to ensure published marketing material and websites were using the label correctly, and obsolete products were regularly cleared from the listings.

The scheme is entirely voluntary and can react quickly to adapt to changes both in the market place and in bathroom technology. And to give it greater strength and sustainability it is now partnered by eight National Trade Associations across Europe.

The entirely voluntary European Water Label is an undeniable success which is low cost, maintains choice, and does exactly what it is designed to do; inform and educate.

Maintaining integrity has always been a key feature of the labelling scheme and its annual audit of products listed in the

The European Water Label, gives both the consumer and the industry professional alike, all the necessary water usage characteristics of bathroom and kitchen products. Simply put, the water consumption for each product can be seen at a glance and the information provided can be used to aid the choice of bathroom and kitchen components.

Tools, Power Tools & Equipment Advice

IMPROVING THE CUT & MINIMISING DUST WHEN WORKING WITH SOLID SURFACE

26

www.ikbbi.org.uk

Solid surface materials present certain challenges to work with – the main ones being achieving a quality cut and controlling the volume of dust solid surface produces when a moulding is applied. And, as you know, the dust goes everywhere unless, of course, the machines used have a dust control that actually works. This is another situation where Festool takes a leap ahead of the competition – application and solutions supplied for the professional user. Running a large moulding on a solid surface requires a router that not only has a lot of power but gives the user control of the speed to ensure the cut is even and a fine finish is achieved. The O.F.2200

Tools, Power Tools & Equipment Advice

provides this but with the addition of fantastic dust collection. The router makes use of Multiple Material Control (MMC); an electronic system which optimises the torque even when running the machines at lower speeds, for example when used on a solid surface, a lower speed is used but the torque is maintained and this provides a good finish after a cut has been made with less re-work required. Extraction is a high priority when working with solid surfaces and Festool has the solution with its wide range of extractors and hose sizes. An M class extractor will be the one to use and this forms part of the system approach from Festool. All of the machines will take the standard

Festool hose at 27mm, including the O.F.2200 router, but for increased Cubic Feet a Minute (C.F.M) air flow when a 36mm hose is used, the extraction will be as near perfect as can be achieved. Solid surface can even be routed within the kitchen or bathroom area when this type of set up is used. Of course, the most important benefit is health long-term, but the other benefit is better quality work and working quicker, meaning a higher financial return on the investment in Festool equipment. All of the Festool range can be adapted to suit the application, so when applying mouldings to an edge the Chip Catcher (494670) can be easily fitted to the base of the O.F.2200 without the need for any tools. A simple idea, but it works effectively, and this is when the difference can be really appreciated to the volume of waste extracted and health. If an accessory is easy to fit, then the chances are it will be used and this is exactly what you get with all of the Festool range. Festool also produce cutters for solid surface and as would be expected will suit all applications for the solid surface industry from flush trimming, cutting in around sink profiles and a wide range of standard profiles, to work with this material and all with the correct bearings to ensure high quality results. Investing in professional tools is always an investment in the long term future of the business and this is why Festool offer the Service All-Inclusive (S.A.I) policy. It ensures the customer is looked after over the three years of the warranty for all repairs, 10 year spares availability, theft insurance and of course 15 day return.

Recruitment

RECRUITMENT OPPORTUNITIES! The iKBBI has stepped up support for its Retail Installation Standards Partners (iSP’s) this month with an initiative focused on recruitment. Working on behalf of its partners, including B&Q, Bathstore, John Lewis, Omega and Symphony, the iKBBI has created a portal for those installers interested in working for these retailers. Speaking on behalf of the iKBBI, Communications Manager Denise Mayell said: “It is clear that as retail sales increase, there will be a need to source and recruit new installers to meet the demand.” Launching the initiative earlier this month, the new www. registermyinterest.org site has attracted over one thousand entries from installers, to include those looking for work in the traditional domestic environment and those looking for work in the contract sector within housing developments. The data collected from the initiative will be exclusively available to current iKBBI Installation Standards Partners, “adding value to the relationship” said Denise. Working with retailers, or supplier / distributors can be a rewarding option for installers, with many benefits for those looking for new opportunities. "Whilst some installers may have had experiences with our retail partners

28

www.ikbbi.org.uk

previously, we would highly recommend that they register their interest for more information. Most, if not all of our partners, have invested heavily in their operations over recent years and we believe they all offer highly competitive packages for their installation teams” said Denise. The initiative calls upon current iKBBI installer members and non-members equally to register their interest online, providing details of the work they would consider and who they currently work with. Details will then be matched with the requirement from iKBBI partners and contact will be made thereafter to discuss any opportunities. Installers wishing to register their interest can do so at: www.registermyinterest.org Retailers interested in becoming an Installation Standards Partner can visit: www.supportchange.org.uk

Installer Profile, Profile Paul Bettis of Paul Bettis Carpentry

PAUL'S A HAPPY HAMMER AND PRETTY GOOD WITH A SCREWDRIVER TOO! In this issue we feature West Ham United loving and iKBBI member Paul Bettis Established for some fifteen years, Paul’s business installs kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms throughout the majority of Essex and London. The company specialises in providing a bespoke service, especially with regards to bedrooms as, uniquely, all the units are fabricated in its purpose built workshop. All installations are completed by Paul, along with the resources of a labourer. We asked Paul how he generated his business, to which he replied: “Most of my work is sub-contracted from a small family run business, Steve Murphy Interiors, located in Benfleet, Essex and also from a joint venture with SB Plastering located in the same town, which also happens to be a small family run business.” He added “A healthy proportion of our work also comes from previous client recommendations and, of course, the iKBBI.” Paul began installing kitchens and bathrooms while working for his brother-in-law Stuart Young, who ran a refurbishment/building company in London called YPC Limited. He began as a labourer but soon progressed to Project Manager. Paul remains interested in site management, and feels that one day he may take up the challenge of this type of role.

“A healthy proportion of our work also comes from previous client recommendations and of course the iKBBI.” 30

Installer Profile, Paul Bettis of Paul Bettis Carpentry

"My biggest challenge in business is managing to offer affordable prices to my clients, without reducing the quality of the finished requirement, and personally learning to juggle my time to be the most productive, while still offering a first class service to all." So how long has Paul been a member of the iKBBI and why did he join? “I’ve been a member for 2 years, because I wanted to reassure my clients and potential clients that we are a trustworthy and reliable business. The institute offers security to them because they know that membership means that we have to work to a specific standard and criteria,” he continued. “I always ask my customers, both new and old, to view the iKBBI website so that they become familiar with the high standards it demands of its members. This definitely gives me the edge over someone giving a competitive quote for the same job who may not be an iKBBI member. In fact, in such a competitive market, I think any professional kitchen, bedroom

32

www.ikbbi.org.uk

or bathroom installer should seriously consider being a member of the iKBBI, as this adds kudos to his business, not to mention benefiting from the odd new business lead provided by the iKBBI from time-to-time.” Paul obviously lives a busy life, so what does he do to relax? “Although I can be a bit of a workaholic, when I am not busying myself in my workshop, I would be either relaxing at home or down the pub watching my favourite football team, West Ham United.” To conclude, we asked Paul if he had a specific principle or motto that he tried to aspire to and without hesitation, he answered: “If you want to succeed with anything in life, you must remember that you only get out, what you put in.” It’s hard to argue, isn’t it. We are currently looking for installers for our ‘installer profile’ feature, if you are interested and an iKBBI member please email denise.mayell@ikbbi.org.uk

Q & A with Damian Walters

Q&A

with Damian Walters What’s the first thing you think of when you get up in the morning? What's for breakfast, followed by what's the plan for the day ahead! Business wise, what most makes you most happy? That’s simple, Progress! The recent work carried out with apprenticeships has been such a breath of fresh air. Let’s be clear, a nationally available apprenticeship scheme for new kitchen, bedroom and bathroom installers to compliment continual personal development for time served professionals is crucial for the entire industry… being part of this particular story is incredibly satisfying! And what frustrates you? Those who feel there’s not a need for change; it’s such a blinkered view unfortunately. What’s your biggest business achievement? Launching the institute back in 2007. It took three regular blokes to address such a clear need for the entire industry, but I’m incredibly proud that it’s not only still here, but stronger than ever. 34

www.ikbbi.org.uk

Damian is the iKBBI Chief Executive Officer and founder of the institute. As he and the company are celebrating 10 years in 2016 we thought that it only appropriate that he takes the stand for this months Q & A. We know you love your current role as iKBBI CEO, but what would be your absolute dream job? Aside from perhaps being a photographer for Ann Summers, I do have a real creative streak, so perhaps leading a creative business.

And your biggest personal achievement? Climbing Mount Everest in 2010. Unfortunately, I became gravely ill at 27,500ft ( just 1,500ft from the summit) so couldn’t finish the adventure, but I do plan to go back soon! I did raise over £100,000 for charity and plan to do the same again. Name a website that the iKBBI members would enjoy (keep it clean)? Oooh… It’s got to be the iKBBI members website of course!!! (www.memberslogin.org)!

Talking of dreams, who would be your dream date (if it couldn’t be your wife of course)? Easy peasy. Rachel Riley (Countdown)… I would thoroughly enjoy cuddles, but even more so, her support dividing bills in restaurants!

Q & A with Damian Walters

Now some quick fire questions: Breakfast or dinner? Breakfast Medium Rare or well done? Medium rare! Starters or dessert/pudding? Starters… I don’t have a sweet tooth! (My wife is the polar opposite)! Beer or wine? Wine these days (getting old) Animal you most resemble at work? A polar bear. Not only am I happy in cold climates and fluffy on the outside, I’m a pretty effective beast that’s persistent and driven to survive!

Red or white wine? Red… White is for ladies!

Animal you most resemble at home? A sloth. I love nothing more than the sofa, rubbish television and my newly purchased onesie!

House on Haunted Hill or Notting Hill? Notting Hill… love a Brit Flick

Saturday or Sunday? Saturdays all the way… COME ON YOU REDS! Cinema or DVD? Cinema… Love the experience as much as the film!

Peter Kaye or Micky Flanagan? Tough one… Love both… But it’s got to be a bit of Micky! Out Out… Love it! Helen Mirren or Helen Flanagan? Flanagan – for the intellectual conversation of course! Kick off on Saturday at 3pm or Sunday 4pm? I support Charlton… It’s only ever been Saturdays for us! Florence or Florida? Florence. Book or kindle? Book. Finally, in the office or on the tools? Neither… On the road with those on the tools is where I’m most happy www.ikbbi.org.uk

Company Profile, Bathstore

HOW INSTALLERS CAN BENEFIT BY PARTNERING TOP RETAILERS LIKE BATHSTORE

The Installer magazine talked to bathstore’s Deputy CEO & Chief Commercial Officer, Dean Weston, about the benefits of launching an installation service and just how important good installers are to the company. How long have you been running the bathstore installation service? We launched the service in August 2013 after both research and customer feedback consistently demonstrated that customers require a full service bathroom solution that they could rely on from start to finish and so it was obvious that an installation service was needed for bathstore. We realise that making major improvements is a stressful exercise for a homeowner as they have to consider overall style and ambiance, product selection and the logistics of whether all this will work in the space they have; therefore the last thing they need is to have unnecessary concerns over the potential of a tradesperson they find in the local press letting them down or even having to project manage themselves by coordinating several different tradespeople. Many consumers have had a bad experience with a tradesman

36

www.ikbbi.org.uk

of some type, especially if they were appointed simply on lowest price. We think its paramount to provide a complete stress-free customer experience from understanding what they want and developing an initial inspiration bathroom design, to purchase to completed project and our installation service facilitates this. Why has bathstore chosen to invest in the installation division? Despite most of the trade press initially questioning us about offering an installation service, we knew that it was a natural next step for the business and our rapid growth since totally vindicates our decision. We were keen to provide the bathstore experience from point of purchase right up to the customer's first steps into their new bathroom and we know that customers value a trusted known brand that will deliver and oversee a project for them. Also, many installers have suffered

ď ˛

Company Profile, Bathstore

from loss of payments in the past when working directly with consumers or alleged “solution providers,” so being part of our service is a sure-fire way for installers to acquire the security that is inherent when working with a national, profitable, reliable, and expertly run business. Who runs the bathstore installation service? I’m responsible at board level and we have Liz Lakin who is National Head of Installation.’ Liz has decades of experience and is responsible for the service on a on a day-to-day basis. She has an excellent team of 20 field managers who oversee the whole operation and allows us to have fantastic visibility of all of our installations and keep in regular contact with our subcontracted installers.

37

Company Profile, Bathstore

Have you encountered any challenges along the way? One of our biggest challenges has been ensuring that we maintain the highest level of service as we continue to grow. We very much pride ourselves on the trust that goes alongside the bathstore brand and it's very essential to me and the business that this is upheld, this is the reason we only accept iKBBI approved installers. What are you looking for in prospective bathroom fitters and what piece of advice would you offer to anyone wanting to become a bathstore installer? Quite simply, we want installers that take immense pride in the quality of their work. We're a business built on both high standards and delivering exceptional service and we want people to join us who bring this level of passion. In most parts of the country we can keep fitters busy all year round without them having to worry about scheduling their own work which will involve funding hefty product purchases, chasing payment and dealing with lots of painstaking paperwork. I'd advise anyone considering entering the business as an installer to be passionate in what they do and look to us to provide consistent work throughout the year without the stress of seeking additional business, it's win, win! As a business we really want to build longterm relationships with our installers via our store teams, as this is the best way for everyone to get the best possible benefits, including our customer. We’ve invested heavily in our products (many have lifetime warranties) and our extended partnership with DHL, one of the world leaders in logistics companies, and so we can confidently react to any issue quickly and efficiently.

Company Profile, Bathstore

What would you say to anyone who felt they had doubts about becoming bathstore installer? We're a profitable, stable and successful business that is growing constantly. We're able to offer our installers the reassurance of knowing that they could have plenty of work in the pipeline and the backing of a large business behind them. If someone still needed further reassurance we'd be more than happy to arrange a meeting with one of our field managers who I'm sure could answer any question positively. Under its previous management, bathstore faced some internal challenges but we've moved the business significantly forward since then, this is reflected in our sales volumes and service scores. We now have over 50 bathstore employees, managing the workflow and relationships with our installers and our customers. We

feel that if we can keep our fitters happy, then we can definitely keep our customers happy and this is already reflected in our amazing 96% satisfaction score from over 10,000 installations! We are incredibly proud of this achievement. A positive bit of news for you; as a result of direct feedback from our installers, we are amending our payment terms to ensure that 30% of the installation fee will be paid within a couple of days of the commencement of the project. This ensures that the installer is practically reimbursed for any materials they may have to purchase to get the installation underway. What are bathstore's plans for the future? How do you predict that the business will grow in the next few years? We have outperformed the marketplace for the last three years and our plans extend well into the next five years with investment already assigned and ready to use. These plans, combined with more and more consumers wanting “done for you” solutions rather than organising themselves, provides us and our installation partners with a very promising future. We are the UK’s leading bathroom specialist with a very successful online business and have already added six more stores this year, this grows our store estate to almost 180 locations. We see ourselves very much as a growing business that’s on the up and we want talented, dedicated installers to join us on our exciting journey.

RADIATOR AND TOWEL WARMER SPECIALIST MANUFACTURER VOGUE IS AN INDUSTRY INSTITUTION AND IS CELEBRATING ITS 25TH YEAR We ask Sales Director Steve Birch for his thoughts on the market and all things Vogue.

I understand it’s a big year for Vogue (UK)? Definitely a year for a big celebration, as Vogue (UK) celebrates its 25th anniversary. A formidable achievement, the last 25 years have been momentous for both brand and business and this milestone has given us good reason to show exactly how far we’ve come, and where we’re headed! 42

Company Profile, Vogue (UK)

Who’d have thought 25 years ago that heated towel rails would have become so popular? Why do you think this is and how has the market changed in this time? Many people don’t realise that the story of the towel rail dates back to the Roman Empire when, in the lavish bath houses, pipes located under mosaic floors would deliver hot water to the thermal baths and surfacing above the tiles to provide heat and enable towels to be warmed and dried. Vogue (UK) owes a lot to this ancient civilisation. The market has developed immeasurably during Vogue’s tenure within the market. Whilst the models that produce volume sales will always be affordable ‘ladder’ designs, consumers have increasingly embraced true designer towel warmers that make a statement in any room, not just a bathroom. Who would have thought a quarter of a century ago that you could sell a ‘radiator’ for a similar price to a brand new low-end motor car! Your design team do a great job of offering both traditional and contemporary style. What differences have you noticed over the last 25 years in terms of both materials and technological innovation? With homeowners investing more in product technology and performance, new and exciting hi-tech designs are becoming more readily available across the UK heating market. This has seen customers move away from the common white painted radiator or towel warmer, towards more stylish heating solutions that incorporate different tactile design and advanced performance. Financial Advice

TAX TIPS by Dean Flood Keeping in spirit with the seasonal New Year resolutions, I thought it may be useful to earmark some administrative resolutions that may have some benefits to your business and perhaps prove less difficult to keep compared to the traditional combination of diet, exercise and abstinence from alcohol. Record keeping It is a legal requirement under company law for directors to maintain adequate books and records and the requirement is further reinforced for all tax payers by HMR&C. Even the smallest of sole traders must retain records that provide adequate support to accounts and tax returns including documentary proof of expenditure claimed as a deduction against taxable income. HMR&C are increasing the likelihood of records checks as part of their enquiries and where none exist, the possibility of a successful challenge by HMR&C is significantly increased, including the raising of penalties for non-compliance. If your record keeping is of a poor standard or is low on your priorities, endeavour to make improvements. For the smallest businesses it needn’t be complicated and may simply consist of maintaining a diary and folder of receipts or perhaps a spreadsheet. Speak to your advisor as to the simplest method 46

www.ikbbi.org.uk

you can adopt in order to comply. Key dates for your diary As accountants, we are effectively driven by the same deadline dates that affect our client portfolios so you often see us becoming more demanding for information at key points in the year. Perhaps the most important date is the online tax return deadline which is the 31st January 2016 for the tax year ended 5th April 2015. The 31st January is also the deadline for paying any tax outstanding for that tax year. It is in your interest to not leave matters too late so please contact your advisor if you have not done so already. If you are unsure as to other important dates for your business, speak to your advisor whom I expect would only be more than happy to assist. Tax planning The ability to make decisions on tax planning ‘after the event’ can be very difficult and it is therefore always advisable to consider tax mitigation

during the year in which the tax charge is accruing. The 5th April 2016 is the end of the next tax year for individuals. If you are seeking to limit tax by way of advancing capital expenditure in your business or perhaps making additional pension contributions, those decisions need to be made early as the date of payment is invariably the date at which tax relief is given. A happy New Year to all readers and let us hope that it is a healthy and prosperous one for all.

Each unit is tested to guarantee it is 100% watertight and the components have been periodically tested and show that they do not drop in performance even after 200,000 uses. The flow rate also fulfils industry standards ensuring the pan will clean away all contents. The overflow pipe also meets industry standards whilst also serving to divert any excess water into the WC to avoid overflow. The frames and WCs can also be relied upon for sturdiness and strength as Vitra tests them with weights of up to 400kg/62 stone.

There are also a number of practical benefits for choosing Vitra’s wall-hung frames. There are additional fixing points to ensure the frame is kept securely in place. The lower body of Vitra’s concealed cistern is covered with Styrofoam which prevents condensation. It also provides great sound insulation so the WC can be used without disturbing others, such as at night. The fill valve is also equipped with filters to eliminate the risk of clogging, and to ensure durability and long term use.

Opinion Piece by Rob Nicholls

KBB 2016 EXHIBITION EIGHT VERY GOOD REASONS WHY INSTALLERS SHOULD ATTEND. Most of you will have heard of the KBB 2016 exhibition that takes place at the NEC in Birmingham every other year. In just a few weeks in March it’s due to be held again (6th – 9th). The majority of visitors are KBB retailers but many manufacturers, developers and installers also attend. So why should you take time out to visit? 1. New products. Unlike retailers, who are made aware of new products and services by visiting sales representatives or are invited, often abroad, to manufacturers/suppliers factories and facilities; installers are rarely kept abreast of new product launches etc. Often installers only become aware of new innovations and technology by being informed by trade counter staff or perhaps more likely, reading their dedicated trade press, much like the iKBBI’s The Installer magazine. A dedicated KBB show therefore provides installers with a rare opportunity to see what’s new in just a few hours. 2. Touchy feely! Unlike reading the trade press, exhibitions are tactile, they provide an opportunity to actually touch the work surface, turn a shower valve, or open a fridge door to assess the quality and viability of a new product. 3. Ask questions. Exhibitors have sales teams and experts on hand to answer any queries you may have about the practicalities and design of the

60

www.ikbbi.org.uk

display model. Many exhibitors entertain visitors to their stand by arranging demonstrations by experts, often including television personalities like celebrity chefs or relevant TV presenters. 4. Prototypes. Some manufacturers will display a prototype product to gauge reactions and encourage input from industry experts like you. This can be rewarding but, above all, interesting. 5. Seminars. KBB and most trade exhibitions provide free of charge lectures that are informative and can be enjoyable. There is always a good range of subjects covered but each will relate to your industry and therefore your business. 6. Making contacts and meeting old friends. An exhibition is an industry market place; there will be retailers in attendance that may be looking for reliable installers to subcontract ongoing work to or, on a more social side, it’s amazing how many old friends and colleagues you can bump into in the aisles and in the bars. This is my favourite thing about visiting a show. After all, where else can you see so many friends, colleagues, business and new and exciting products under one roof. 7. Meet the iKBBI. The iKBBI is exhibiting with its biggest stand to date and it gives you a chance to meet the personalities of the organisation and ask them any questions you may have.

Perhaps you may want to know about the new membership tiers that are taking effect this month or even about the iKBBI inspectors initiative or perhaps the collaboration with PROCAT regarding iKBBI apprenticeships? If you do attend make sure you stop by and say hi. 8. Fun. Visiting KBB can actually be fun, especially if you plan your visit to take in a night in Birmingham. If you haven’t spent a night there before, it’s a vibrant place full of bars, clubs and restaurants and there are some really nice affordable hotels right in the hub of the nightlife. It might be a good opportunity to treat the wife and give her a weekend away, whilst a also giving her a better understanding of the market where you earn your livelihood. Planning your visit to encompass a weekend means that you will visit the exhibition on a Sunday, thus avoiding having to take valuable time away from your business.
