Multihull Solutions is set to open New Zealand’s first Out-of-Water Boat Show in Whangarei.
Multihull Solutions launches New Zealand’s rst Out-of-Water Boat Show NEW ZEALAND Following the overwhelming success of Multihull Solution’s Out-of-Water Boat Show on the Gold Coast, the company will replicate the facility at its New Zealand Sales Centre in late 2019. The purpose-built year-round Out-of-Water Boat Show is based at the Multihull Solutions Sales Centre in Whangarei just over two hours north of Auckland and has been developed in partnership with the New Zealand’s most popular multihull hub, the Norsand Boatyard. The first of its kind in New Zealand, the Out-Of-Water Boat Show provides an extremely affordable and effective means for clients to successfully sell their multihull with rates at half the price of a regular marina berth. Buyers can inspect an extensive range of multihulls for sale from hull to interior on the hard in one convenient location with easy access for surveyors to conduct inspections prior to purchase. The facility is also conveniently located at a New Zealand Customs Clearance site making it extremely appealing for international cruisers to sell their vessel in Whangarei once they have completed their cruising adventures. Multihull Solution’s agreement with Customs enables sellers to list their boat for sale without being out of pocket with taxes. As the main showroom for the entire South Pacific region, the new facility is the only venue that buyers need to visit to view an expansive range of quality pre-owned multihulls on the hard. The Out-of-Water Boat Show concept allows sellers to showcase their boat for sale in a premium display space incurring less wear and tear on the vessel than traditional marina sales berths. The facility is professionally operated and located in a secure fully-fenced venue with convenient access to comprehensive shipyard facilities for any maintenance or repair work. A team of multihull specialists is also on hand to facilitate all aspects of the sales process, making it an easy and stress-free process for clients. Professional maintenance and cleaning packages are available to ensure each vessel is in pristine condition for buyers to inspect. The Norsand yard is also the ideal base to manage any required refit and overhaul after clients have completed their Pacific cruising adventures. The shipyard offers quality warranty works and contractors for major brands like Catana, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard, Sunreef and more, and is the ideal facility to prepare multihulls for sale in the Out-of-Water Display. Further information on the new Out-of-Water Boat Show in New Zealand can be obtained by contacting Multihull Solutions on 1300 855 338 or +61 7 5452 5164 (within Australia), +64 (0) 9 432 7032 (within New Zealand), emailing info@multihullsolutions.co.nz or visiting the website at www. multihullsolutions.co.nz.

The world of Meme Grant
Chrisna
Chrisna & Louis Van Wyk.
Having been introduced to dinghy sailing by her Dutch mother, Meme Grant (above right at helm) always wanted to sail around the world. Meme Joined the South African Navy to learn ocean sailing and received her SA Navy sailing colors. Leaving the Navy to do deliveries she found she was in demand to teach sailing and drive charter fishing boats, becoming the first person, and woman, to pass the exams to qualify as a Cruising Association of South Africa instructor for both sail and motor up to ocean level. After getting experience skippering a 73 ft sailing vessel she qualified as a Class XII captain with the South African Maritime Authority. Traveling to the UK, she passed her Yacht Master Offshore and Ocean for motor and sail and received her instructor qualification, later becoming a RYA examiner in South Africa. Running her own sailing school for many years, she specialized in teaching people on their own boats, doing deliveries and running charters in exotic destinations, co-skippering an all-girls crew in the Beachcomber race, as well as teaching at other schools and examining. One of her pupils was Louis Van Wyk, they stayed friends after he completed his course and sailed many happy miles together. Her husband, a marine engineer decided to go cruising and after his stage four melanoma diagnosis they swallowed the anchor in the Azores and started a permaculture project. Meme studied nutrition to keep Mike alive. To their delight the diet and lifestyle changes worked, he has been tumor free for nearly six years now. When they heard Louis and his wife Chrisna were starting a boating company Draco Marine Services and Draco Charters in Thailand Phuket, Meme and Mike decided to help as a way of keeping one foot in the sailing door while being able to share their vast sailing experience. Joy Sports announces the Jonny Boats Bass 100
Jonny Bass 100-Perspective Front
Jonny Bass 100-Side
Jonny Bass 100-Top View
Jonny Bass 100-Perspective Rear
Joy Sports Company, Bangkok and Feelfree US, jointly announced the introduction of Jonny Boats featuring the Bass 100; a customizable motor or human powered personal boat designed for outdoor recreational use. The Bass 100 borrows from the classic “Jon” boat concept, an open platform to build upon as they did in the “good ole days”, when DIY (do-it-yourself) was not a hobby, but a way of life. Jonny Boats blends this classic concept with modern boat and kayak technology offering a highly customizable base model ready for multiple outfitting options with ready-to-go off the shelf kits and individual accessories. A distinctive feature that sets the Bass 100 apart is a unique planing hull designed to rise up and glide on the water at higher speeds to cover more distance quicker. This was a necessary feature as the Bass 100 is designed to be powered more so than paddled. The concept is closer to a boat rather than a kayak but by simply adding the fin kit you can easily transform the craft into an efficient sit-down or stand-up paddle boat. The Bass 100 base model is ready for adventure with a user friendly wide open deck, super-stable hull and a comfortable high seat that can be used for fun, fishing or as a tender between larger boats. Jonny Boats are designed for a wide spectrum of users, from the recreational weekend boater to the hardcore angler or hunter. What makes the boat so special is no matter who you are or what adventure you have planned, you have the ability to outfit the Bass 100 your own way, in your own style.

“The concept was born and driven by years of experience in the recreational boating and paddle-sports industry,” said Peter Murphy, Jonny Boats Designer. “Talking to our customers, I found that people wanted freedom of choice to customize their own watercraft according to their needs and budget.” According to head of Feelfree US and Bass 100 design contributor, Jim Hager, the inspiration for the brand was also driven by his own personal experiences. “The inspiration of what Jonny is all about came from my own personal experiences, as an angler who does things my way and my two uncle ‘Johnnys’, both avid fishermen whom I admire to this day ,” said Jim. “The concept also draws inspiration from the Jon boat -- simple, yet functional and accommodating in its most basic form -- but with the ability to transform it into an advanced fishing platform.” The Bass 100 offers a variety of standard features including the Jonny High-Ride forward and aft plus height adjustable seating system, adjustable foot pegs, two flush mounted rod holders, front Uni-Track rails for mounting accessories, inspection port, oversized rear tank-well storage area with bungee tie down system, integrated sturdy side and bow and stern handles, a wide open deck with soft foam standing pads and a drain plug. For a truly customizable experience, a variety of Jonny Boat brand accessories will be available in ready-to-go kits or individually such as Jonny Boat’s own electric motor, the Go-Moto Pod (both fixed and a steerable option), 8-Ball Steering System, stern-mounted retractable fins, Beaver Tail Rudder, Uni-Track Rails, Uni-Track Accessory Mounts, Uni-Track Stand Up Bar, trolley, sonar kit, soft deck kits, trim tab kits, seat bag, cooler, paddles, electronic wiring systems and more. First Sanlorenzo SL102 Asymmetric Arrives in Singapore
Sanlorenzo Asia is delighted to announce that the world’s first asymmetrical yacht, the Sanlorenzo SL102 Asymmetric, has recently arrived in Singapore after the official launch for the owners in Viareggio, Italy. An in-house sale, represented by Nick Stratton, Sanlorenzo Asia Sales Manager, this SL102 Asymmetric will now be based in Singapore and cruise extensively around Southeast Asia. Introduced in 2018 at the Cannes Yachting Festival as one of the main premiering stars of the show, the Sanlorenzo SL102 Asymmetric is an innovative out-of-the-box design that perfectly represents Sanlorenzo’s impressive design capabilities, which maximise yacht spaces by expanding and rethinking traditional layouts. The goal of the SL102 Asymmetric was to provide guests with more usable living areas on the main deck while simultaneously guarantee easy access for the crew between the stern and the bow when docking and manoeuvring. At first glance, the Sanlorenzo SL102 Asymmetric bears the signature Sanlorenzo exterior design, with an elegant, streamlined and balanced profile, but when looking closer it becomes apparent that the design is unique – each side is not the same as the other. Designed in line with Sanlorenzo’s ‘made-to-measure’ philosophy, the interiors of the SL102 Asymmetric have been uniquely tailored to suit the owner’s style. This particular SL102 exudes sophistication with a mixture of oak and walnut woods coupled with a tranquil colour scheme both inside and out. “A new yacht arriving is always an exciting day for all involved and especially so in the case of the first SL102 Asymmetric. It’s wonderful to see the yacht in Asia and cruising the region,” says Nick Stratton. “Now in Singapore and having already been cruising we look forward to following the many adventures on board”, adds Stratton. The success of the SL102 Asymmetric has been followed by the announcement of the new Sanlorenzo SL96 Asymmetric. The SL96 Asymmetric is a continuation and consolidation of the Asymmetric concept, and a tangible demonstration of the success of Sanlorenzo’s ground breaking approach to design. The brainchild of Massimo Perotti, Chairman of Sanlorenzo, the Asymmetric series breaks the mould in an exciting way. By using an asymmetric layout, it was possible for Sanlorenzo to rethink the conventional balance on board by offering volumes previously destined for other uses. Retaining only the side decks on the starboard side and eliminating the left one, which is carried on the roof of the superstructure, allows 10sqm of surface space to be recovered and used in the interior. This is an approach that has never been tried before. The newly delivered SL102 was formally celebrated with a private handover party for the owner in early Summer and is set to cruise extensively within Southeast Asia. Following the arrival of the SL102 Asymmetric, another new Sanlorenzo arrival into Asia is soon expected, with a Sanlorenzo SX88 due in Singapore waters within Autumn 2019. Designers from Thailand grab gold award at European Product Design
Thailand-based Albatross Marine Design (AMD) has won a gold award at European Product Design – an annual international contest for industrial designers. The boat presents a designers' vision of 10m water taxi for modern urban environments. In cities like Bangkok, Sydney or Dubai water craft are important part of passenger transport and sightseeing attractions. The new design is based on the extensive design experience of the AMD team in the field of small passenger catamarans.
The new design is a significant departure from heavy commercial passenger boats, which require extensive maintenance and high operational costs. Instead, the priority is given roomy public spaces, natural airflow, practicality, easy maintenance, all at an affordable cost. However, safety features were not compromised. The catamaran is highly maneuverable in tight areas due to the wide separation of propulsion units. The whole concept is a high-performance light boat with a minimalistic and natural layout intended mostly for rivers and protected coastal areas. Solar panels are installed enabling electrical/hybrid propulsion features. The catamaran offers transport, or city tours, for 12-20 passengers, at comfortable speeds of up to 15-20kts, all while riding in the comfortable motion of a catamaran platform. Boarding of passengers is through a side gate also suitable for wheelchair users. The saloon area features open space, which can be fitted with seats and settees, also with a bathroom and pantry. The designers used an open layout with a hardtop roof, thereby no obstruction for airflow in hot climate, and with excellent protection from the sun. In rainy conditions, the saloon area is protected by roll-ups. Founded in 2006, AMD is a leading small craft design office, with over 50 different catamaran designs in service worldwide - from oilfields of Siberia to Barrier Reef of Australia. www.amdesign.co.th

Precision Shipwright Services celebrates two decades + of service
P
recision Shipwright Services (PSS) was formed in 1997 in Phuket Boat Lagoon. Starting with a team of four young Thai nationals, owner and founder Scott Bradley built a yacht refit business which became the most reputable in S/E Asia. With yachts coming to the PSS yard from around the world for major refits and repairs, Scott needed to train local Thais to support a new type of business evolving in Phuket, “yacht refits. A factory was built in Boat Lagoon and soon the business grew along with Scott and his small team of hard-working Thais. Having worked on several hundred yachts since 1997, PSS continues to excel in quality refits. Below are short bios on the incredible PSS team:

SAILING TOWARDS THE FUTURE OF PHUKET
O
ften referred to as the Pearl of the Andaman, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and a popular spot for visitors to South East Asia. Well known for its many islands, the area is full of hidden beaches perfect for those looking for a tropical paradise. From motor yachts, power catamarans, classic sailing yachts and super yachts, Phuket offers a large variety of vessels available for charter during all months of the year. 1,500 yachts and cruisers visit Phuket annually and investors are increasingly interested in capitalizing on the island's popularity with boat owners and tourists. Yacht travelers like Phuket and use it as a home port for further trips to the Phi Phi islands or Koh Lanta. It also serves as a hub for longer charters, with many other yachts leaving for the Mergui Archipelago in Burma, Langkawi in Malaysia or even the Anambas Islands in Indonesia. As such, it is predicted that two or three new marinas are expected to open at the island’s main bays to support the island’s increasing popularity for sailors. Phuket could develop into a major marina hub, with much potential for its docking facilities and tourism attractions.
TOWARDS BETTER BUSINESS With these developments on the horizon, the Thailand Yachting Business Association (TYBA) is hosting the island’s very first Business to Business Charter Week in November 2019 to promote Phuket as a cruising destination. The Association is keen to give international industry professionals the opportunity to discover some of South East Asia’s finest cruising grounds on board some of the region’s best charter yachts. The event is not open to the public and focuses only on developing charter business between those working in the industry. From the 16th – 21st November, visiting charter brokers will be able to consult and learn about the destination, making this event the perfect experience to help them sell Phuket to their international clientele and even discover the spectacular Phuket cruising grounds, indulging in the finest sailing experiences Phuket offers.
LUXURY CHARTER YACHTS As a long standing member of the TYBA and a veteran in yachting for over 30 years, Asia Marine is proud to participate in this event and develop Phuket as a luxury charter destination. The company is featuring a lineup of some of the best charter yachts available on the islands this year:

BEYOND PHUKET – THE MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO Alternatively, north of Phuket lies the Mergui Archilelago, charterers visit these islands for wild untamed nature. They exist in an unspoilt state, having only opened to international access in 1997. The archipelago consists of more than 800 islands, varying in size from very small to hundreds of square kilometers, all lying in the Andaman Sea just north of Phuket. Visitors are welcomed by vast mountainous islands covered in dense jungle and thriving wildlife. Few tourists frequent the area, resulting in vast stretches of white sandy beaches untouched by man. Be sure to stop and visit the Mid Group islands. You could spend the whole week exploring its small islands, hidden coves and beaches. The most spectacular are the Frost and Potter Islands where white beaches and huge fig trees await. Also visit the Pu Nala Village; it is the only habitation in the area and is definitely worth stopping by. The local monks at the Buddhist temple are very welcoming and interesting characters. A local boat builder has recently set up shop behind the bridge in the village. He is constructing traditional Moken boats that are being hand sawn from trees on site. Ensure to take your camera and consult with your guide about when to take photos.
This is Asia’s boating playground. This is the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’.

MSR celebrates
twelve years on the water Story & Photos by Scott Murray
C
elebrating twelve years on the water, and hopefully many more to come, the Multihull Solutions Regatta, organized by the Phuket Yacht Club, sailed from the 12th to the 15th of July in Chalong Bay on Phuket's protected east coast. This regatta has become many a sailor's “green season” favourite due to the more consistent southwesterly monsoon winds and cooler temperatures. Twelve yachts competed across three divisions: Racing & Cruising Multihulls and the Firefly 850 Sports One Design Class. With
participants coming from Australia, Malaysia and even the United Kingdom cementing the regatta’s reputation as an international event. The Fugazi Racing team cut its teeth on a new 10M sports cat. Fugazi (Ex Ninja), designed by Bakewell-White as a training boat for the 2013 Korean Americas Cup team. The boat weighs around 750kg, despite having a mainsail larger than the original Fugazi trimaran. The boat was optimized at Asia Catamarans with the addition of adjustable carbon T foil rudders from Halls and Asiayachtspars. The team includes Joel Berg, Nick

Guthry, Scott McCook, Ciaran Corrigan and Dan Fidock. The Fugazi crew along with Twin Sharks were returning to defend their Racing Multi & Firefly champion’s titles, respectively.
Strong winds greet sailors on rst day of MSR
Day one of the regatta was delayed for an hour due to strong shifting winds gusting to 31 knots. PRO Simon James then got the fleet underway just before 1pm with the Racing and Ocean Multis sharing the same start, followed by the Fireflies. Some shifty maneuvering by John Newnham’s Twin Sharks saw Ray Waldron’s Surf Patrol go OSR in the Firefly division, but then it was off to the races around Koh Bon with the fluctuating weather and wind conditions causing some frustration and an eventually shortened course for the shortened multihulls.
By the time the second race got underway later in the afternoon the wind had died down to seven knots and PRO James held two more windward-leeward races, the first being three laps, the second two, which was shortened shortly before 5pm, when racing was scheduled to end for the day. There was a minor battle within a major battle in the Racing Multihull Class – the battle of the Fugazis; Dan Fidock’s new customized catamaran vs. the old Fugazi (a Moore 37), now Bonza. It was the first race for Bonza with its new crew and the first race for the new Fugazi (a Bakewell-White 10.5). Phantom V took the division on this day, with Warwick Downes’ Bonza second. Dirk Weiblen podiumed on No Fear finishing third on the day. This boat was previously known as Offline and This! Dan Fidock’s Fugazi was fourth and Twister 2 fifth.
Great job by the Phuket Yacht Club and Commodore Scott Duncanson for putting on a tremendous regatta.

The Firefly division was a Battle Royale from the getgo between arch-rivals Twin Sharks and Voodoo.
The Firefly division was particularly competitive with multiple lead changes throughout the three races: Twin Sharks won the day, Blue Noze came second and Voodoo placed third overall, after being disqualified from the third race. Surf Patrol and Moto Inzi rounded out the class in that order. ShoVel in the Cruising Multihull Class won the day with new sails and tactical skills capturing all three races though its only other competitor in the division unexpectantly had to undergo minor repairs before race one, so had to sit that one out but joined in for the latter two races. There were two protests on the day: the first in race two saw a port-starboard dispute between Twin Sharks vs Moto Inzi resolved when Moto Inzi retired gracefully. In race three, Surf Patrol and Voodoo touched near the shortened finish line, and the protest committee decided in Surf Patrol’s favour handing Voodoo a DSQ. The regatta’s on-water team deserved a lot of credit for pulling off three races in challenging weather and wind conditions that changed dramatically throughout the day.
Strong winds & tight racing hi-lite MSR’s day two
Whitecaps and winds gusting to the mid-teens greeted sailors as they lined up for day two of the 2019 Multihull Solutions Regatta.
The Racing Multis sailed two races; the first a three-lap windward-leeward in Chalong Bay and the second a longer course out to the safe water mark just before Cape Panwa. Andrew Hurford’s Phantom V and Warwick Downes’ Bonza flipped positions on the day with Phantom V winning race one and Bonza coming second, only to see Bonza stretch its legs flying through the water to seize
race two with Phantom V placing second. Glwyn Rowlands’ Twister 2 with two third-place finishes on the day consolidated its hold on third place in the division. Dan Fidock and his crew on Fugazi are still developing their new boat, and had some good thru-the-water speed, but had a bit of trouble with their halyard locks. They sit fourth in the division with fifteen points. Dirk Weiblen’s No Fear, unfortunately, had trouble early in race one and had to withdraw from racing for the day. There were three races for the Fireflies on the day: the first, a three-lap windward-leeward course; the second a two-lap windward-leeward course and the third being a triangle course in Chalong Bay. For the last five years, this division has seen a heated rivalry between John Newnham’s Twin Sharks and Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo on the water, which is only matched by the camaraderie the boats share off the water. They have reigned dominant in this division for some time and today was no different. A rare poor drop by Twin Sharks on the leeward side of the first mark allowed Voodoo to push through and claim the first race, and from there on in it seemed as if the boats were joined at the hip with only a couple boat lengths marking the distance between the two at each rounding. George Eddings’ Blue Nose suffered some bad luck when they preferred spinnaker went down in the third race and they dropped
from first place to last quickly. The Fireflies, which were designed by Phuketian Mark Pescott and built by Phuketian Mark Horwood have been a mainstay of the regatta since day one. After two days of racing featuring six races with one drop, Voodoo sits atop the Firefly leaderboard with seven points with Twin Sharks only one point back with eight
53
points. Blue Noze, Ray Waldron’s Surf Patrol and Marc Chapus’ Moto Inzi follow in that order with 15, 17, and 22 points, respectively. Zam Bevan’s ShoVel has won all five races in the two-boat Cruising Multihull Class as today it beat Bill Kane’s The Sting in both the windward-leeward race it sailed as well as the race around Koh Lon.
Phantom V captures Multihull Solutions Regatta title
The Stealth Phantom V with its boat builders Alan Carwardine and Roger Diggleman on board, as well as owner Andrew Horford, won the Racing Multihull Division of the 2019 Multihull Solutions Regatta. Its four first-place finishes, while never finishing lower than third, helped Phantom V clinch the title hi-lighting three days of great racing.
Warwick Downes’ Bonza flew around the course all regatta earning line honours on most of its races but had to settle for second overall though it did win two races during the event. Om the final day, Dan Fidock’s new Fugazi shed its teething problems as it romped through the water like a bat out of hell earning line honours (and second overall) in race one crossing the finish line in 1:35:29 after it sailed out around Koh Bon and then Koh Loh before turning for home at the Phuket deep port safe water mark. It also won race two on the day for the Racing Multis, a three-lap windward-leeward giving the boat its first victory of the regatta. Glyn Rowlands’ Twister 2 who featured three generations on board finished fourth and if not for a FPSA on race three might have even placed higher. Dirk Weiblen’s No Fear came last

in the five-boat division but a combination of DNSs and DNFs saw it only start three of the seven races held in the Racing Multis. The Firefly division was a Battle Royale from the get-go between arch-rivals Twin Sharks and Voodoo as only a point separated them going into the final day of racing. And fittingly, it was all decided on the last race when Twin Sharks managed to push Voodoo into fourth place with a port vs starboard incident on the downward leg of the last lap enabling Twin Sharks to move into second place in the race and grab the title. George Eddings’ Blue Noze was in the midst of it all throughout the regatta winning one race and taking third overall. Rau Waldron’s Surf Patrol finished the regatta with a strong performance winning the last race but placed fourth overall, followed by Marc Chapus and his crew on Moto Inzi, who never really did get over their teething problems finishing last in the majority of the races. Zam Bevan’s ShoVel won all its races
in the Cruising Multihull division but its sole competitor Bill Kane’s The Sting was granted “the perseverance trophy” for its “never say die” attitude during the event. A tireless effort by Tom Cracknell and other volunteer committee members helped the regatta run smoothly. Khun Jeab and her crew in the kitchen made sure all the sailors’ thirsts were quenched and that their bellies were full. The Thailand Yacht Show graciously provided the food for the final party. Kudos go out to Simon James and his crew for great course management on the water and a big thank you to Captain Brent McInnes of the Phuket Cruising Yacht Club for providing the photography boat. The principal sponsor for the sixth straight year was Andrew de Bruin and Multihull Solutions. Race day sponsors included Boat Lagoon, East Marine Asia and Octopus Electrical Services. Supporting sponsors are SEA Yachting, the Thailand Yacht Show, Asia Catamarans, Regatta's Asia and Doyle Sails.

Passing on the love g
n i l i a s for A
t the recent Top of the Gulf Regatta, SEA Yachting caught up with World Sailing’s Rob Holden who was in Thailand to help launch the regatta’s inaugural SV14 racing series. Rob Holden started sailing quite late in life (at age 25) because he didn’t have an opportunity growing up as access to the sailing community in South Africa was very difficult. So, when he did get the chance to sail, it was important for him to try and give others the same opportunity. Initially denied access to the Boskop Yacht Club, he rented a sailboat from nearby, purposely capsizing in front of the BYC’s committee boat, allowing him to make introductions, eventually wrangle a membership invitation, which eventually led to him becoming Commodore: quite a story. “Sailing is an inclusive sport; it’s for everybody, from age eight until you die,” Rob says. “Able-bodied people, disabled people, everyone can participate.”
Rob spent the first decade of his sailing life, training and improving his skills – he and his wife sailed in five Dart 18 world championships (their highest finish was 36th). Rob and his wife Ellie learned to sail together. With Ellie pregnant with the couple’s second child, they decided to start a sailing school at the Mussel Bay Yacht & Boat Club on South Africa’s southern coast, halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Previously, they had run an agriculture supply company. Rob’s wife still runs the school today and his daughter is one of the instructors. The Mussel Bay Sailing School offers free lessons to the disadvantaged with one stipulation: once they become proficient sailors, they must give back and teach others as well. Eventually, Mussel Bay became the biggest sailing school in South Africa, and in 2009 South African Sailing sent Rob on training course to the UK, where World Sailing liked what they say and started sending him to teach courses,
57
primarily in Africa, where he taught courses in Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, the Sudan and Zimbabwe as well as giving support to fledging sailing programs in Namibia and Mozambique. Rob says in the last two years alone, he has traveled to 38 countries, that’s a pretty hectic travel schedule. Rob developed the South African Sailing training scheme from scratch, teaching all levels of sailing and working with entry-level coaches and athletes trying to qualify for the Olympic Games. Four years ago, he started dealing with parasailers at the World Parasailing Championships in Kiel, Germany. He realized that

coaching people with disabilities is the same as coaching able-bodied sailors. The only difference is you need a bit more patience getting into the boat and out of the water. Today, Rob is the full-time Training Delivery Manager for World Sailing; he came to Thailand to run a three-day clinic before the ToG helping the sailors get used to the SV14s. Competitors came from South Africa, Estonia, the Philippines and, of course, Thailand. Sailing was taken out of the Paralympics for the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but Rob and others are hoping to get the sports back in for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Part of the problem was that the equipment used for parasailing in previous Olympics was very expensive, where boats such as the SCUD 18 (approx. 30,000 GBP), the
2.4mR and then the Sonar were used. So, World Sailing wanted to focus on more affordable boats such as the RS Venture and the Hanse 303, but these were entry level, not performance boats, so there was a need to have a new type of boat that looked good and sailed well. Trying to take the SV14 to the next level, naval architects Simonis-Voogd got in touch with one of their customers Fareast Yachts and the rest is history. The value for money of the SV14 is phenomenal (USD3,000) – it looks good, and sails well, though Rob says there is some tweaking that needs to be done to the controls. In conclusion, Rob says, “I would like this boat to become the most popular boat for disabled sailing in the world as its fast, comfortable and affordable.”
Skipper Foundation Rob is looking for funding for the Skipper Foundation, Mossel Bay's sailing school. Any help would be most appreciated. contact: info@ sailingrsa.co.za

Beyond Boundaries
B
eyond Boundaries is the story of a young surfer who first learnt about the ocean by physically challenging its waves.
