Port Takola to enhance Krabi as a new yachting center after completing its hardstand and fuel supply

KR ABI Krabi located on a southwest coast of Thailand, approximately 30 nautical miles east of Phuket. The province has rapidly grown to become one of the top tourist destinations in Thailand and the world. This is due to its beautiful natural attractions such as its coastline, picturesque limestone karst terrains, abundant national forest, and over 130 islands to explore. Apart from hosting many world-renowned sailing destinations such as Phi Phi, Lanta, the Hong Islands, and Railey, Krabi also lies on an international passage between Langkawi and Phuket. This makes it a popular stop for international cruisers for provisioning, leisure, and for transportation. Krabi International Airport has increasing domestic and international direct flights, which makes it convenient for foreign boat owners to travel while leaving their boat there. Currently, there are international direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, China and Doha. As Phuket is facing an issue caused by a lack of infrastructure to support an influx of development toward tourism, Krabi has become an alternative as a more family friendly and more natural-orientated destination. Krabi Nakarin International Hospital opened in 2014, making the province more suitable for expatriates to stay on a longer-term basis as well. Port Takola has completed its hardstand construction covering about 9,000sqm This will accommodate up to 50 dry berths. A 38-ton Roodberg hydraulic trailer is equipped and it can lift boats up to 20 meters. This slipway is designed to have a 12- meter span to accommodate the lifting of large catamarans. The construction of a fuel dock is also completed. It will supply diesel and Gasohol 95 fuel. Matthew na Nagara, the general manager of Port Takola says, “We are excited that the marina phase one will be in full operation soon. Our marina is in a central location that makes a convenient base for boat owners to lift their boat for servicing. More and more services & maintenances will become available after our boatyard is in operation. There are quite a few good skilled repairers here already but their number will increase, as more and more boat owners will realize an advantage of keeping their boats in Krabi. Port Takola is offering a 25% early bird discount on boat lifting charges for the first ten reservations. For more information, you can contact Matthew at matthew@porttakola.com or call +66 89 446 1991.

Regional 20 NEWS Q&A - Sri Lanka Yachting with Asia Pacic Superyachts

“The man behind the superyacht scene in Sri Lanka – Priyantha Perera”

New compact fourunveiled at Genoa

Q. As a native of Sri Lanka, what is it in your back ground hat brought you to the yachting industry? A. Soon after my education I started my shipping career as a trainee when joining a shipping agency company in Sri Lanka. The company provided agency services to all types of vessels calling in to the Ports of Sri Lanka. During my tenure of training and subsequent working in the shipping agency eld I gained a vast knowledge of handling commercial vessels such as - container vessels, cargo vessels, cruise liners and various sized yachts. I dealt with the authorities for various clearances to ensure smooth port operations and worked for efcient and productive services to the Captains. Q. What other duties did you handle as your position grew? A. In the line of duty I handled crew changes (sign / sign off) along with arranging visas, renewing visas, arranging bunker nominations, supply of provisions, engineering stores, bonded stores and deck stores, etc. for the vessels calling in the Ports of Sri Lanka under the company. stroke outboard Boat Show. model. The new model is also claimed to have the largest gear box ratio in its class, using the same 1502cc engine unit as the DF70A/80A/90A models. Suzuki has also added its water detecting system to the new engine, giving an audible alarm and visual warning if water is detected in the fuel, delivering safer boating for the driver and less chance of corrosion and loss of power output in the engine itself. “Boating made better is what we strive to achieve with our range of four-stroke outboards and the DF100B delivers a number of advantages to our customers,” said Sean Allen, Suzuki Marine Aust/NZ national marketing manager. “Its compact size and weight makes it an ideal power choice for a wide range of boats without compromising on performance and gives customers a choice of which 100hp outboard model best suits their needs.” Other features of the DF100B include Lean Burn fuel technology, offset driveshaft, maintenance-free timing chains and tilt limit system, all packaged in a body with a large 3D ‘S’ Suzuki emblem available in either Pearl Nebular Black or Cool White finishes. Both the DF100B and DF100A will both be available to allow customers to select which outboard best suits their boating requirements. Stock of the DF100B will be available locally this coming summer.

ON MUTIARA LAUT

W

hile many charter customers are content to cruise, club-hop and shop in traditional cruising grounds such as the glamourous Mediterranean or Bahamas, another ‘new’ world is available to the adventurous. Transparent seas, exotic wildlife and unique island cultures, barely touched by outside influences, are still to be found in Indonesia.

EXPLORING INDONESIA The “Mother of all Archipelagos”, the region is stretching wider than the continental USA. Many of the 14,000-plus tropical islands remain untouched by outside influences. You will neither encounter many other yachts, nor many people in this little explored region. There is exotic and unique wildlife galore. There are only about 50 locally registered vessels in the nation and one of the most remarkable surely is the MUTIARA LAUT. Dutchman Leo Van Oostenbrugge, professional boat builder and former Merchant Navy Captain, expressed his love for the ocean, sailing and Indonesia with the built of a unique yacht, suitable for exploring Indonesia. Based on the traditional 18th century North Atlantic schooner, with a hint of the Indonesian Phinisi, MUTIARA LAUT was born. The ultimate luxury sailing yacht to explore the Indonesian Archipelago, MUTIARA LAUT is a classic two-mast schooner that recalls romantic oceanic adventures and old-world charm. A streamlined hull and massive sail area make for an excellent sailing performance and a cruise at a smooth, leisurely pace.

37

The interior of MUTIARA LAUT is that of a floating luxury hotel: modern and stylish complete with all high-end amenities. There is comfortable seating inside the large salon and outside on deck and seven spacious cabins decorated with intricate Balinese artwork and wood carvings. From October to March, MUTIARA LAUT charters in Raja Ampat Archipelago, in West Papua, in far east Indonesia. Part of the Coral Triangle, it is the world’s “womb of marine species generation and diversity”. It is barely 1% of the planet’s surface area but contains some 70% of all known coral species and nearly 40% of all saltwater fish species. Sail these waters with ichthyologists and they are likely to find you a new species of fish. The name “Raja Ampat” means “Four Kings” and dates to the days the four larger islands in the group - Waigeo, Salawati, Batanta and Misool - were each ruled by an independent “Raja”. In addition to these islands, many other smaller islands and thousands of karst limestone islets, make up a total of 1,500 islands and islets in the region. Either the northern or southern region can be visited, or a longer cruise can be created, to experience a selection of all Raja Ampat has to offer. The following is a sample itinerary but possibilities are endless. Each day typically includes swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, water-skiing, fishing and beach-combing with picnics, evening BBQs and even beach parties.

Day 1 - SORONG Gateway to MUTIARA LAUT’s cruising grounds of Raja Ampat is Sorong, a quickly developing town on West Papua’s northwest coast. Sorong is not an international airport, so most visitors arrive via Bali and Makassar. From Sorong airport it is just a short drive to the harbour. After harbour clearance, set sail towards the island of Wai, and enjoy an afternoon of water sports and snorkeling off the coral reefs. For scuba divers, this is a good opportunity to do a check-out dive with your instructor.

Day 2 - BATANTA Get ready for an adventurous hike into the island’s interior. Local villagers guide you on a trek through the mangroves, along a riverbed to a jungle waterfall and a refreshing dip in the pool. Continue uphill along the rocks to a second, larger waterfall. Swim and snorkel upon return, before sailing north to Waigeo.

38

Day 3 - WAIGEO Many birds, including rare hornbills and cockatoos can be heard in the early mornings. Explore Wofoh, three islands linked together by stretches of pristine coral reef. You can navigate around the islands with the tenders or kayaks. Put your coral and fish identification skills to use on this vibrant reef or simply relax on the beach. In the afternoon, we will move to Aljui Bay and visit the pearl farm of one of the producers of high quality seawater pearls. Snorkel and dive underneath the jetty to see wobbegong sharks, stonefish, hundreds of schooling scads, ghost pipefish, juvenile batfish and much more. Nearby the jetty of the pearl farm there are great reefs for amazing dives. In the evening cross the Equator to the northern hemisphere on the way to Wayag.

Day 4 - 5 - WAYAG This isolated and uninhabited area is sprinkled with verdant limestone islands and bordered by slivers of white sandy beaches fringed with palm trees. Underwater is a spectacular seascape with extensive hard coral reefs at shallow depths. Several species of pygmy seahorse also call Wayag home. After your dive guide points out the tiny creatures they are getting increasingly easier to recognise! Most islands in Wayag have yet to be explored, you might be the first ever to set foot ashore or to dive in a certain spot. A short hike to the summit of this rock island offers great views and photographic opportunities. We’ll sail overnight to south Raja Ampat. Raja Ampat Wayag - Captain Graham Chilcott.

Day 6 - PENEMU and FAM ISLANDS This conservation area shows the richness of Raja Ampat biodiversity on land and underwater. In the morning, climb up the hill to see the breathtaking view, then spend the day on and in the water. Explore the lagoons by kayaks or go diving and snorkeling. Drift with the currents and see fields of anemones, giant clams and schooling fish. With the tide coming in, visit hidden lagoons and beaches and admire the gorgeous sunset.

39

Day 7 - MISOOL Misool is dotted with numerous uninhabited islands fringed by whitesand beaches and beautiful coral reefs. Karst formations include high cliffs and limestone overhangs, narrow channels, caves, coves and jagged rocks. Daram is the most easterly point of Misool islands, stunning reefs include a submerged pinnacle covered with sea fans and surrounded by schools of fusilier and bat fish. A short swim across the sandy bottom brings you to the main reef with lush soft corals. Do visit the Misool Eco lodge. In true eco-style, not one single tree has been cut, but the whole resort has been built using driftwood.

Day 8 - TOMOLOL CAVE This sacred site has a Muslim shrine at the entrance and a whole waterway flowing through the cave, which can be explored with the tender or while snorkeling. Your crew will prepare an alfresco BBQ on one of the shaded beaches.

Day 9 - MANSUAR This is the very best place to snorkel or dive with majestic manta rays. Drift with the currents in the plankton rich water while they feed. Manta Sandy offers a fairly shallow dive site with manta cleaning stations. Between exhilarating encounters with the giants, visit the local village, walk around and drink some fresh coconuts. After lunch, we slowly sail back into the direction of Sorong.

Day 10 - SORONG Disembarkation in Sorong and transport to the airport for onward adventures or return flight home. Local government and conservation organisations are working together to protect the future of Raja Ampat’s natural treasures by making the National Park a protected zone. Some islands to the south have taken a further step by implementing huge no-take zones, where fishing of any kind is prohibited. In order that tourism contributes to the protection and the governance of the region, a Raja Ampat Tourism Tag, arranged in advance of any visit to the area, is required for each individual visitor and a contribution is required for each vessel cruising in the area. Emagine’s nautical journey

41

S

cott Bradley’s Emagine has quite an interesting history starting with winning the 2,025nm 2001 Transpac as Bull. Then owned by American Seth Radow, it was built by Sydney Yachts, in Nowra, New South Wales—it had only been in the water six days before winning that fabled race. Radow spent a lot of money on the boat (approx. USD$700,000), and had a lot of gadgets on board including a titanium water maker. Bull was the second last in a series of 18. Sydney 40s built and featured a silicon bronze fin, which alone cost US$100,000 and a carbon mast, which was very expensive back then. The Sydney 40 was originally designed to be a oneclass boat for the Admiral’s Cup. After Seth, another American owner bought the boat, renaming it Beica. Yet another American, Mark Mizner bought it next, changing the name to Babe and had it shipped to Thailand. He invested in new North sails and competed in several regattas in Thailand and Malaysia with good performances. At about that time, Scott Bradley was looking for a boat and almost bought the M30 Judy off of Andrew Marshall, before he sold it to John Coffin. But Andrew told Scott there was a Sydney 40 on a mooring at Yacht Haven that he could get a good deal on. Scott liked what he saw and ended up buying the boat in June of 2015. He ordered a complete refit starting immediately at his own Precision Shipyard. He changed the rigging layout, moved the mast aft by 370mm, extending the section with swept back spreaders and

moved the chain plates aft. Andrew Dovell, the American naval architect, named on the certificate as the architect, did the drawing work for the upgrades and modifications. Andrew has lived in Sydney for decades and was also involved in the design of the new 100ft Ragamuffin. Andrew did the laminate schedule for the carbon mast, after Scott sent him a sample, so the modifications could be designed correctly by the mast designer. Kiwi Chris Mitchell, who was recommended by the last owner, did the rigging design. Scott had the keel on the boat modified, putting in a new lead bulb (adding 290 more kilos), and just the bulb work alone cost US$25,000, with the lead and casting for the bulb costing Bt520,000. Scott changed the boat’s colour from dark blue to metallic silver. He also added a new carbon bowsprit, he has spent over US$200,000 so far on the boat. The “E”, “M” & “A” in the name Emagine comes from East Marine Asia (Scott’s chandlery). The boat was launched at Boat Lagoon, and the first regatta she entered was Phuket King’s Cup in 2015, followed by the 2016 Royal Langkawi International Regatta. Her first win was at the 2016 Bay Regatta beating Megazip. She then won Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2016, but put in a disappointing showing at the King’s Cup 2016. In the RLIR 2017, she

beat the TP52 THA72 in the first race but came second to her overall, then reversed the tables winning the TOG 2017 defeating THA72, even beating her around the top mark in one race. Emagine also entered the Samui Regatta 2017, but as the boat is designed for light winds of up to 8 knots (average Thai wind speeds) moderate wind is not favorable, more weight on the rail required! In her last regatta, CPHPR 2017, she won the first race again but lost overall to the TP52, Team Hollywood. Peter Gregg is the boat’s tactician and manager, the core crew is stable with crewmates like Gary Baguley. Scott’s half-brother, Ty, weighs in at 120 kgs, so when he’s on the rail the boat’s speed does pick up in good wind. The boat has pulled its share of surprises over the Asia Yachting Grand Prix season even beating Black Baza over the line in light wind. Scott has a three-year-old son and eightyear-old daughter and admits that taking care of the boat cuts into family time. He figures he has spent about US$100,000 annually on the boat – about US$12-15,000 for each regatta from regatta fees, to maintenance, haul-out, transportation and crew payment. Scott keeps the boat at Ao Po Grand Marina, and her distinctive colour scheme makes her stand-out in all the regattas she competes in. She’s appeared in many regional newspapers and sailing magazines as well as a number of inflight magazines. Emagine definitely inspires people to wish they were sailing.

SWEET & SHORT

SAIL THAILAND 2018

T

he survey that was done after the 2017 Sail Thailand Rally showed results that were extremely supportive of continuation of the concept of this short but sweet rally. The Rally Partners are most happy to announce the Sail Thailand 2018 Langkawi to Phuket Rally. As the rally was so unanimously supported there are only few changes for the 2018 issue. Never change a winning team, right? Basically the only thing to change seemed to be the internal timing of the rally. Little timing changes will allow for a bit more time to enjoy exploring the area covered by the rally. Most other aspects remain unchanged.

Sail Thailand was so successful last year and I will promote the rally where I can.

The Sail Thailand Rally is the logical next step for yachts cruising the region after having participated in Sail Indonesia, Sail Malaysia West and Sail Sabang. Returning from Sabang mid-December to Langkawi, the holiday period with Christmas and New Year is often celebrated either with family on board or abroad. Early January returning to their yachts will give them ample preparation time for the Sail Thailand event and discover the stunning area between Langkawi, Phuket and Phang Nga Bay. For an excellent overview of sailing destinations in this area we would like to refer to the website of Siam Sailing, where \RXÂśOO ÂżQG LQWHUDFWLYH FKDUWV of this area. Have a look at: www.sailing-charter-thailand. com/charts.html.

THE ANNUAL SEVENSTAR PHUKET CRUISERS PARTY IS WELCOMING ALL CRUISING YACHTS IN PHUKET AND KRABI

“Cruising yachts now have a natural extension after arriving with the yearly Sail Malaysia Passage to the West from Puteri Harbour to Langkawi, says Sazli Kamal Basha, organiser of Sail Malaysia. “By working together between rallies and by coordinating rally dates, we can offer a truly nice way to discover our countries by sea. I am happy to see that

Matthew Na Nagara, general manager at Port Takola marina adds: “Our team has been supporting the idea of a rally for a long time and I think last years event showed us we were absolutely right in our belief that Krabi Port Takola is a natural stop in this rally. We are surely happy to host both rally participants and other cruising yachts for a cultural party in our marina. Krabi and Phuket have a lot to offer to sailors and by organising this rally we again can show visiting yachts the best of Thailand Andaman Sea.

The closing party of the Sail Thailand rally, the Sevenstar Phuket Cruisers Party is open and free to all cruising yacht owners and their crew in Phuket and Krabi. The more the merrier is the motto. Zara Tremlett of Phuket Yacht Haven says: ³6LQFH ZH ¿UVW RUJDQL]HG WKLV FUXLVHUV SDUW\ years ago, guests have always told us how much they enjoy this reunion with cruising friends that they may not have seen for years. There are not that many bays in the world where limestone islands are visible as far as the eye can see. It’s not only the islands in the Bay but the limestone formations continue on land and make up large parts of the horizon. Breathtaking beautiful and quite rare.

GREEN & CLEAN SABANG EXPLORE PULAU WEH By Marieke Derks

P

ulau Weh, the most Northern island of Indonesia, still evokes this feeling of you being a 19th century explorer discovering someplace remote and very special. Arriving by yacht in very sheltered Sabang Bay (Sabang being the capital town of Pulau Weh) is probably the best way to visit this little gem close to Phuket and Langkawi. Expect friendly people, clear waters and fantastic underwater life. Every year since 2009, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism chooses a special destination to be the host of an annual national “Sail Eventâ€?. This year it is Sabang on Pulau Weh. The event is a great occasion to improve (marine) infrastructure in the area. So these “Sail Eventsâ€? are not just a promotional tourism push, but provide real opportunity to improve the lives and economy of the local population long term. A bit like the Olympic Games are supposed to be set up.

Green, Clean, Nice & Easy Upon arrival in Sabang Bay you will greatly appreciate the fantastic shelter this bay is offering to yachts going at anchor here. It is protected from wind and waves from every direction and the view is simply breath taking. The Sail Sabang 2017 event is more than worth your while to visit. The Ministry of Tourism, Sabang Enterprise Agency (BPKS) together with all relevant authorities (immigration, customs, port authority, harbor master) have gone out of their way to turn this event into a success and make life as easy and nice as possible for participating yachts. YACHT CHARTER AND CENTRAL AGENTS

1

997 – 2017: 30 years have passed since the first Phuket King’s Cup Regatta and with it the introduction of the first charter yachts in Phuket. The yachting industry at the time largely ignored South East Asia (SEA), but Phuket has become a fully recognized yacht charter destination. Today, the challenge for the International Charter brokers is to select the right boat between the 150 bareboats and numerous superyacht operating 12 months a year in Asia

The mission of a Yacht Charter Central Agent Crewed charter yachts offer widely differing facilities and accommodation, because they have been especially built to their owners’ requirements. Each potential charterer has his specific needs, from food preferences to standard of services, and from budget to crew characteristics. The wrong boat, or an inadequate crew, can ruin very costly holidays leading to bitter endings. To keep clients satisfied and book the right vessel at the right place, charter brokers must have up-to-date knowledge of the yachts and their destinations. Generally, charter brokers will have access to a large range of yachts, but have little time to come to South East Asia to conduct their own sourcing and selection. These international charter brokers will work

with local partners and, for the luxury market, with the “Yacht Central Agents” of each boat. A Central Agent (CA) is appointed by the owner to run the yacht’s promotion, dispatching information via its own website, direct listings and its professional on-line platforms. It is the coordinator between the yacht, the broker, and the charterer, confirming the yacht’s availability and the terms of the charter contract. To be sure of giving the right description of vessel it is imperative that the CA has detailed knowledge of the yachts in his or her portfolio, all gained from personal visits to the boat to check facilities, meet crew and sample the cuisine.

51

But can Adastra be called a charter yacht? Before posting such an extraordinary prototype in his charter portfolio, Vincent Tabuteau CEO of Asia Marine Phuket went to Santorini in Greece to meet with the crew and understand the charter capacity of this amassing and unusual superyacht. Adastra takes the power trimaran concept further than has ever been attempted. The challenge of turning this concept into a viable luxury yacht has led the Shuttleworth Yacht Design team to further research and develop new thinking on stability and comfort at sea for this type of craft. The outrigger height has been optimized for ease of motion at sea, and a new outrigger shape has been developed to increase stability in waves.

Adastra's 16-metre beam features a saloon area on the main deck with a lounge area, dining table, and navigation station. The deck at the rear of the yacht has a sofa and bar area to port and a dining area to starboard. The open deck running aft also has a door that hinges out to create a bathing platform. Further aft of this there is space for a 4.9m tender and directly below is a garage which can store a 3.1m tender. The deck saloon has a panoramic view.

52

The large wraparound saloon windows create fantastic views and an atrium effect inside. The spacious saloon of Adastra is almost circular in shape and offers superb views to those in the lounging and dining areas. A door through the windscreen allows access to a large foredeck sunbed that can be shaded with an awning suspended from carbon-fibre poles set into the deck. The main helm station, which has two seats on a plinth that give a view over the cabin top, is in a raised pilothouse between the saloon and the aft deck. Hatches in the overhead provide ventilation but also allow the helmsman to put his head out for a 360-degree view when docking.

Extra space has been created below deck by slightly flaring the central hull just above the waterline. This area has been split into two sections with a fullwidth master cabin located aft with access from the deck saloon, and two further guest cabins, accommodation for the crew, and the galley located forward of the engine compartment. Adastra offers comfortable accommodation for nine guests and up to six crew members.

NEW AZIMUT 66 FLYBRIDGE: INBORN SUPERIORITY

Technology & Italian home design at its very best permeate the new icon from Azimut.

T

he new Azimut 66 has its sights firmly set on the future as it strives to deliver an unprecedented onboard experience for the owner and their guests. Peerless lines and layouts are based on a concept that continues to break new ground, drawing authentic inspiration from Azimut’s uniquely successful heritage in the Flybridge segment, with more than 300 Azimut 62 and 64’s sold around the world since 2002.

A HIGH-TECH HEART AND SOUL

The electronic power steering system gives you the same sensation as driving a thoroughbred sports car. The world’s first control system for inboard engines allows owners to customize the yacht’s responsiveness to reflect the own personal piloting style. Pure carbon fiber is used to laminate the radar arch, the hard top, the upper forward part of the flybridge and the foredeck. This means being able to offer more space, which translates

into better onboard comfort, while maintaining excellent levels of dynamic stability and trim. The new domotic system (emotion-based technology) has up to three pre-set mood lighting environments to create the desired atmosphere onboard. The electrical frosting divider between the galley and the living area can be obscured to provide maximum privacy only when it’s needed. The integrated Raymarine monitoring system has been customized in order to provide interfaces with as many onboard systems as possible. Its functions can be accessed from both helm stations and remotely by tablet from the engines data to the alarms and bilge pumps, from tank levels and discharge pumps to engine room ventilation, up to the sound system and the air-conditioning regulation. Everything is close to hand and customizable and each individual area can be managed separately.

LATEST TRENDS FROM MILAN’S SALONE DEL MOBILE FURNITURE SHOW

The latest trends from Milan’s Salone del Mobile furniture show have been taken on board, inspiring the furnishing and décor in a style that reflects an exquisitely Italian sense of history, heritage and culture. Examples are the heat-treated oak, elegant figured sycamore and highly prized maple, enhanced with an ultra-glossy varnish in the finest tradition of Italian and craftsmanship. Dimmable LED strips hidden behind the curtains enhance the colour shades of the wood used and the contrasts between the various materials. The owner’s suite in the centre of the yacht has full-glass windows with no struts and a choice is offered between a vanity area or a chest of drawers to complement the wardrobes. Owners can also decide whether to fit Roman blinds or wooden Venetian blinds. The exterior design by Stefano Righini combines more space with the bold, flowing lines that have become a distinctive feature of Azimut through the years, as well as offering the Owner the chance to enhance the yacht’s contours with a distinctive personal touch, by

allowing them to choose their own colour for the gunwales. The end result is appealing and full of spirit, but continues to be practical, comfortable and safe. The raised bulwarks and waterlines are as impressive as they are sporty and streamlined, right from the very first glance.

SIMPLY IMPECCABLE PERFORMANCE.

The lines of the Azimut 66’s hull are the same as those which have given Azimut 62 and 64 owners so much pleasure at sea. Exceptional handling, reduced dynamic trim angles at all speeds, soft entry and superb performance are the results of a perfect relationship between weight distribution, wet surface and balance forces. There are factors that influence an operator’s decision about what boat they may acquire, and some of these factors are beyond their control.

W

hile those who know the company may view Austhai Marine as a boat builder, Managing Director Ray Ringuet says it is not that simple. During a recent conversation, he explained. “To a certain extent building boats is a byproduct,” he said. “We play a support role for the marine tourism industry in Asia. Our approach is to discuss with the operator his specific operation, to learn as much as we can about his operations and his challenges, and then to try to find solutions that meet his requirements. As that requirement is about moving people on the water, we build boats to accommodate that need. Each boat is specific to that operator’s particular needs based on their operation. Fortunately for us, many of the water-based tourism operators have similar business models, similar challenges, similar needs, so we do not need to have an infinite variety of models, only the ability to customize suitable standard models to meet particular needs.

“All good marine tourism operators have common goals- safety, comfort, economy, reliability, durability to name few- our role is to meet as many of these as possible within the budgetary constraints of the customer. Ideally, we like to visit the customer and view the operation first hand, and then have an in-depth discussion. This is not always possible but we know from firsthand experience that the outcome is generally better when this happens.” We asked how successful this approach has been. “For Austhai, it has been very successful. We can quote numerous examples of customers growing their businesses simply by introducing

63

Not a Boat Builder?

better boats more suited to meeting their goals and the requirements of their customers. One of our early customers from an area where only monohulls were in use took an initial leap of faith and ordered a 10-metre catamaran from us. Being the first catamaran in his area and with no previous experience of catamarans he was understandably concerned about how it would perform and how it would be received. The performance exceeded expectations and it proved to be a better boat in all important respects to other boats operating in the area. This gave him an advantage over his competitors and as a result his business grew. The increased demand meant that he needed another boat, so

he ordered another 10-metre catamaran. “With this second boat, his business grew further and he needed greater capacity, so he ordered a 15-metre catamaran. This led to increased growth again because he had the best boats, and so he ordered one more. He now operates two 15-metre catamarans and is currently budgeting to purchase a third. We find this experience repeated constantly to the extent that now more than 90 % of our builds are repeat orders from the same customers. “We also try to stay in contact with our customers and learn from their experience. By listening we learn how to make improvements in future builds to make them more suitable for

64

the intended use. Our customers have a vast store of experience and knowledge and it would be foolish of us to ignore this valuable resource, so we tap into it whenever we can. Conversely some customers are new entrants to the industry and so we can help and advise them by relaying the experience of established customers. “None of this happens if we look upon ourselves as purely boat builders. I suggest that it is the consultancy aspect of our operation that differentiates us.” Ray also noted that the market is constantly seeking larger boats. “There are many factors that influence an operator’s decision about what boat they may acquire, and some of these factors are beyond their control. Travel agents play an increasing role in determining what is acceptable in the market place. They do not want to spread a tour group over two or more vessels so a larger vessel that can take an entire tour group is certainly preferred. Tour groups are normally limited in size to a number that can be accommodated on a tour bus, which is generally about 45 passengers. Thus, a tour boat that can take this number is preferred. As a result, most of our builds now are in the 15-metre range, which can accommodate up to 60 passengers and crew for day trips. “The Internet is also playing an important role, although a largely unrecognized one, in buying decisions and operators need to be aware of this. Sites such as Trip Adviser allow people to report immediately on their tour experience. A bad report on such a site can have an immediate impact on travels agents and boat operators. Travel agents are very aware of this and thus do their best to provide quality experiences. This includes using the best boats available for their marine tours, and hence operators with better boats are more likely to be sought out by travel agents. “This should encourage the operator to purchase the best boat that he can. Generally, today this means a larger boat and increasingly

the advantages of catamarans over monohulls are being recognized. Apart from the obvious benefits on seaworthiness, safety, comfort etc. well-designed larger boats offer lower costs per passenger mile than smaller boats, thereby improving the bottom line. Unfortunately, this fact is often lost on operators who consider only the initial outlay, and not long-term benefits when making a buying decision.” We asked about the future, which allowed Ray to raise his pet subject. “It is great to see that marine authorities are paying much greater attention to safety” he said. “While this may be causing some shortterm inconvenience to operators, the benefits in the long term are considerable. Also, the moves afoot to introduce standards for boat, which I understand will be largely based on ISO standards is a very positive step in the right direction. Most of us are aware of Thailand’s very poor marine safety record and it is indeed pleasing to see that measures are being introduced to improve tourism safety in the marine sector. Whilst there is still much to be done there are positive signs and this will have only positive long-term benefits. “As far as the market is concerned, we see nothing but positive growth ahead. The implementation of stricter standards and safety measures will mean that many existing boats will be de-commissioned and will need to be replaced. This, together with an increasing demand for larger boats and sustained growth in the tourism sector points to an increasing demand for safe quality vessels for years to come. “Also, the increasing interest by banks to consider financing boats for the tourism market will have an increasingly positive effect, as it will enable more operators to purchase larger, more suitable boats. In addition to the local market, there are increasing opportunities in the export market. The number of enquiries we receive from overseas is increasing at a significant rate, and our experience with overseas customers is similar to that which we experience locally, e.g. once one boat is in service, additional orders follow. The main negative for overseas buyers is the cost of freighting larger boats out of Thailand.”
