Outline 2020
Report of the Board of Directors The world has changed when in March 2020 the corona pandemic broke out. Not only organisations had to digitise more quickly and had to deal flexibly and dynamically with the fast-changing market conditions, but it also turned out to be a reset for many entrenched processes and habits. As a result, the circular debate gained its momentum. This fitted in perfectly with the ambition of Janssen de Jong Groep, which focuses on the reuse of materials. The need for this is more than clear to us. We are on the threshold of major changes, and just at that level, Janssen de Jong Groep feels responsible to take the lead in the Dutch construction industry.
Retrospect 2020
Refinancing
For Janssen de Jong Groep the year 2020 would lean on two pillars: customer satisfaction and digital integration. Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the digital integration became more than relevant, it turned out to be a necessity of life for the continuation of the usual business operations. The IT departments within the clusters showed their professionalism and craftsmanship. In The Netherlands, Poland, and the Caribbean, we made a collective seamless transition from physical to online meetings.
In March 2020, Uranus 1952 BV, a shareholder of Janssen de Jong Groep, restructured the group financing with its house banks ING and ABN AMRO. The outline of the new funding relates to a term loan of € 10 million (repayment term of four years) and a recurring credit facility of € 20 million. Market rates have been agreed upon for group financing.
Customer satisfaction was placed in a completely different perspective. The pandemic prompted us to immediately anticipate the crisis. Our people proved themselves to be flexible and effective sparring partners. By responding quickly and correctly and seeking communication, together with our stakeholders they came up with effective answers. Challenging issues that society did not have to think about before the corona pandemic. The maneuverability of Janssen de Jong Groep is also reflected in the figures. The Group closed the year strongly with a net profit of € 17.4 million. This compared to a net profit in 2019 of € 14.9 million. The net result rose by approximately 17%. The total liquidity position on December 31, 2020, was € 53 million. This is an improvement of € 30 million compared to 2019. Because of the improvement in working capital and refinancing, investments in 2020 consisted mainly of replacement investments. The size of the workforce has decreased by 35 employees compared to 2019 (968 employees).
Circular ambition Today’s world demands change and the Janssen de Jong Groep customers too. Traditional real estate thoughts tilt slowly. So, we are increasingly aware of the problems associated with virgin materials, the scarcity and depletion thereof. In 2020, Janssen de Jong Groep focused on a strategic partnership with New Horizon Urban Mining, a company that harvests materials instead of demolishing them. This collaboration forms the foundation for our circular ambition, which is set out in the Janssen de Jong Groep Strategic Plan for the years 20212023. The ultimate goal is that no materials in our real estate chain will be undescribed. Stones, piles, foundation, plastic, wooden, and steel frames. All these materials will be numbered and recorded in a digital library property. Ready for reuse. Ready to be harvested.
Transformation
2020 has been a realignment of the Dutch clusters. This to be able to transform from a group of construction specialists to a partner in the real estate cycle. By partnering with New Horizon Urban Mining, Janssen de Jong
Groep has the entire real estate cycle - new construction, maintenance, renovation, redevelopment, and harvesting equipment under one roof. This not only strengthens the Group as a whole, but also the cooperation between the clusters. This means that our clients land on a Janssen de Jong Groep platform. They can enter the real estate life cycle at any time. It ensures that our customer’s experience becomes a smooth transition between the different stages of real estate. Not based on sending 25 e-mails to get to the next counter but based on data and the customer profile to follow through within the ambition of our customer. We use the life cycle of real estate - with all opportunities and laws - to move forward together. It’s a big step in our circular thought, and it’s even getting better in the next following years.
New core values The core values of the Janssen de Jong Groep are Courage, Solution-oriented, and Together. We inspire each other by applying our core values in daily business operations. It leads to innovations, higher customer satisfaction, and optimal knowledge transfer, internally and externally. This enhances the synergy between stakeholders and our subsidiaries.
Outlook for 2021 - invest in the future Janssen de Jong Groep is ambitious and the Group needs professionals to realise its ambitions. Passionate people with a Janssen de Jong heart. We invest in the personal development of our people and apply a recruitment policy that puts character first. We, therefore, consider ourselves fortunate that we have been able to keep our employees despite the corona crisis. We did not have to let them go as a result of the corona crisis. In addition, we will focus on geographic spread in 2021. This limits the travel time of our employees, which is better for the environment and work-life balance.
New Horizon Urban Mining The strategic partnership between Janssen de Jong Groep and New Horizon Urban Mining will be expanded in 2021 and strengthened by the take-over of New Horizon Urban Mining. This take-over sets a foundation for the realisation of the circular vision of Janssen de Jong Groep.
The only way of doing business that ensures the future. We can only remain relevant when we stop wasting, by throwing away useful materials. It is necessary for our generation and the generations after us.
Financial outlook Despite the current developments as a result of the coronavirus, for the Netherlands, we expect a higher turnover with an unchanged result based on the current order book. For our Caribbean activities, the market conditions are a lot more challenging. Due to the coronavirus lockdown, we expect lower turnover and lower results. Group-wide turnover is expected to increase by approximately 10%.
Thanks! The corona pandemic has shown us how committed and flexible our employees are. Without them, there is no Janssen de Jong Groep. Because the Group is the people. One of the great parts of our job is visiting the projects and the offices. We are proud to see how Janssen de Jong employees create together. A word of thanks for Hans Huis in ‘t Veld, who, after four years as chairman of the Supervisory Board, has handed over the baton to Hans Smits. His knowledge has contributed to the growth and development of the company. We would like to thank him for his term of office, in which he has always passionately provided advice to the board. Thanks! Where doors close, doors open. With the arrival of Ine Frings, the Supervisory Board has been enriched with knowledge and insight in the field of organisational development and human resource management. Together with Jurgen Stegmann, legal financial, and Hans Smits, a highly experienced director, the circle of the Supervisory Board is perfectly balanced. And finally, a big thank you to the shareholders of Janssen de Jong Group. The trust they placed in us and space they give for the undertaking. On to an exciting and successful 2021!
