Change in work in progress

“We like to be a forerunner”

During this period of turbulence, we are grateful for the successful year we had with Janssen de Jong Groep. Within the six divisions, we have again carried out numerous beautiful projects in the field of new construction, maintenance, restoration and renovation and redevelopment. The success was not only in the good financial results, but also in the high satisfaction of our customers and the pleasure of work and collegiality within our teams. To anyone who has contributed to our success over the past year: Thank you! The success of the year translated into a nice financial result: The net profit for 2021 is slightly higher than the previous year: We made 18,1 million euros in profit after tax. That is a result that we can be proud of. It is also remarkable that almost every company in the group had a good year, despite the tough times we are going through.

Acquisitions In 2021, we welcomed two new businesses to the Janssen de Jong Groep: Van Zanten Vlaardingen and New Horizon. With these acquisitions, we have expanded our employee base by 67 to 1.085 people. We are very pleased about this, because we are always in search of good professionals. We also improve our geographical area: Van Zanten is active in Vlaardingen and the surrounding area, a region in which we as a group want to acquire more local work. New Horizon, specialized in ‘harvesting’ of building materials from existing buildings, is also an enrichment for our group. With New Horizon added, we can offer the complete real estate cycle: from new construction, maintenance, restoration & renovation to the harvesting of buildings.

Circular construction world The new scale allows New Horizon to develop further as a driver of circular construction in the Dutch building industry. This is desperately needed, but will not be achieved overnight; the

construction industry is a traditional sector. Moreover, the clients must also develop a desire for circular construction. It helps if there are companies at the forefront that provide a proof of concept, followed by other builders and project developers. Janssen de Jong Groep also likes to be a forerunner in this. We are often ambitious when it comes to sustainability. For example, we were the first to build a gas-free neighborhood in Vlijmen, even before this was legally required. Our ambition to build circularly is great, we are, among other things, working on the roll-out of circular concrete. In 2022, we will further map out Janssen de Jong Groep’s CO 2 footprint. This measurement is a starting point for formulating concrete targets for reducing this. We are currently drawing up a targeted policy in this regard.

Digitization In 2021, we have also taken significant steps in the field of digitization. Within the group, we all work with the same BIM software, which improves project control. Digitization is a process that never stops, in 2022 we will also adapt the consolidation software to a new system. Furthermore, we are working towards the same data network for the whole of the Netherlands, so that employees of all companies can ultimately work everywhere in exactly the same environment. We have already achieved some successes, but we can do even better.

Continue to grow Sharing knowledge and training within the company is important. In 2022, we will launch the Janssen de Jong Academy: a knowledge platform for everyone within the group to develop themselves. Employees will find courses and in-depth material on specific topics here. In addition, we have two programs that help ambitious employees to develop further: the Young Potential Development Program and the Future Proof Leadership program. The great thing about these programs is that they are group-wide, so that participants from different clusters can meet and can form a network. In 2021, we saw a rejuvenation of the group of directors; various branches are now managed by people in their thirties.

Committed and happy employees Last year, we also carried out an employee engagement survey. The results were very good, even though the research was carried out in a difficult corona year, in which we saw each other less than usual. Even with lockdowns and other restrictive measures, our employees felt more engaged and more satisfied with their work than in the previous survey of 2018. Many initiatives have been taken to keep in touch with each other during the home working periods. In any case, we already have a culture within our group that is characterized by great involvement. There is a lot of tolerance towards and trust in each other. We also noticed this during the annual sports day: employees are happy to be part of such a great club. That gives us a lot of energy!

Investment property encourages discussion within the organization. Discussions about, for example, undesirable behavior and what to do if fraud is suspected. To encourage this kind of discussion, we’ve introduced an app: Speak Up! Employees have installed the app, which contributes to raising awareness about dilemmas and about our integrity policy.

Perspective The outlook for 2022 is still positive, although it is very difficult to make accurate predictions. We also have many great projects ahead of us: the pipeline for the next two years is well filled. However, the geopolitical tensions in the world can cause all kinds of unexpected effects. We are already suffering from rising material prices, high transport costs, long delivery times, and uncertainty about deliveries. There is a major challenge to tackle the housing shortage in the Netherlands. We hope to be able to contribute fully to this challenge in the new year, with great projects with all our colleagues who are passionate about their work.
