Lower operating and maintenance costs lectric vehicles are efficient at converting stored energy into propulsion. Electric cars do not consume energy while at rest or coasting, and modern plug-in cars can capture and reuse as much as one fifth of the energy normally lost during braking through regenerative braking. Electric cars typically have on-board efficiencies of around 80%
Cost of batteries and cost of ownership Plug-in electric cars are significantly more expensive as compared to conventional internal combustion engine cars and hybrid electric cars due to the additional cost of their lithium-ion battery pack.
E
No Air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions Electric cars, as well as plug-in hybrids operating in allelectric mode, emit no harmful tailpipe pollutants from the on-board source of power, such as particulates (soot), volatile organic compounds, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, ozone, lead, and various oxides of nitrogen. Less dependence on imported oil For the United States and the other developed countries and emerging countries their dependence on foreign oil has revived concerns about their vulnerability to price shocks and supply disruption. Control on Oil Prices With the Electric vehicles dominating the market, the use of oil and the conventional fuels will reduce to a great extent, thus reducing their requirement around the globe. Car-to-grid Plug-in electric cars offer users the opportunity to sell electricity stored in their batteries back to the power grid, there by helping utilities to operate more efficiently in the management of their demand peaks.
Availability of recharging infrastructure. Plug-in recharging will take place overnight but there are no garages or driveways with power outlets at home, residents of cities, apartments, dormitories, and townhouses and thus people might be less likely to buy plug-in electric cars Potential overload of the electrical grid The existing electrical grid, and local transformers in particular, may not have enough capacity to handle the additional power load that might be required in certain areas with high plugin electric car concentrations. Risks associated with noise reduction Electric cars and plug-in hybrids when operating in all-electric mode at low speeds produce less roadway noise as compared to cars propelled by an internal combustion engine. Risks of battery fire Lithium-ion batteries may suffer thermal runaway and cell rupture if overheated or overcharged, and in extreme cases this can lead to combustion. To reduce these risks, lithium-ion battery packs contain fail-safe circuitry that shuts down the battery when its voltage is outside the safe range.

Electric cars are
back again
A
n electric car is car as we all know are driven by one or more electric motor, using electrical energy stored in batteries or another energy storage device. Major car brands around the world are busy inventing new and better models of electric cars and vehicles for the future. Japan being one of the largest auto producers has already launched the green car and still working to improve and add more features. Do you know that electric cars were popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century, before the advances in internal combustion engine (ICE) technology and mass production of cheaper fuel cars? All car manufacturers were competing with each other for market share by bringing advance models one after the others. These advances led to a decline in the use of electric cars. Energy crisis of the 1970s and 1980s brought a short-lived interest
in electric cars, but those cars did not reach the mass marketing stage due to few important drawbacks like high cost of batteries, Non availability of recharging infrastructure, Potential overload of the electrical grid, Risks associated with noise reduction, Risks of battery fire. Since 2008, a renaissance in electric car manufacturing has occurred due to advances in battery and power management technologies, concerns about increasing fuel prices, and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. People are being aware and are willing to pay higher to save environment. Several national and local governments have established tax credits, subsidies and other incentives to promote the introduction and adoption in the mass market of new electric cars depending on battery size and their allelectric range.

Demands for electric cars are shooting up at a great pace. As of January 2014, the number of mass production of electric passenger cars and utility vans available in the market is limited to about 25 models, mainly in the United States, Japan, Western European countries and China. Japan is number one in the list of electric car sales in 2012 with a 28% market share of global sales, followed by the United States with a 26% share, China with 16%, France with 11%, and Norway with 7%. All Japanese Top brands are competing among themselves and bringing out new models with improved technologies. Market is booming with many electric car models to choose from. Amongst the hundreds of Electric car models in the market these days the most popular vehicles are Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Nissan Leaf, BMW ActiveE, Toyota RAV4 EV and more. The world's top selling highway-capable electric car ever is the Nissan Leaf, released in December 2010 and sold in 35 countries, with global sales

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese public multinational corporation primarily known as a manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles. Honda was the first Japanese automobile manufacturer to release a dedicated luxury brand, Acura, in 1986. Aside from their core automobile and motorcycle businesses, Honda also manufactures garden equipment, marine engines, personal water craft and power generators, amongst others. Since 1986, Honda has been involved with artificial intelligence/robotics research and released their ASIMO robot in 2000. In late 1999, Honda launched the first commercial hybrid electric car sold in the U.S. market, the Honda Insight. The first-generation Insight was produced from 2000 to 2006 and had a fuel economy of 70 miles per US gallon (3.4 L/100 km; 84 mpg-imp) for the EPA's highway rating, the most fuel-efficient mass-produced car at the time. Total global sales for the Insight amounted to only around 18,000 vehicles.
passenger vehicle designed by Japanese automotive pioneer Masujiro Hashimoto that was first produced in 1914 at its Yokohama plant in April 1935. The company began exporting cars to Australia that same year. Nissan converted entirely from producing small passenger cars to producing trucks and military vehicles during World War II. In 1960, Nissan became the first Japanese automaker to win the Deming Prize for engineering excellence. New Datsun models like the Bluebird (1959), the Cedric (1960) and the Sunny (1966) raised Nissan sales in Japan and abroad, and the company experienced phenomenal growth in 1960s. The energy crises of 1970s fueled the rise in exports of affordable, fuel-efficient Japanesemade cars: The third-generation Sunny got the highest score on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's tests of fuel economy in 1973.

Estimated range is 85 miles. A full recharge from a 240-volt Level 2 source takes 3.5 hours, but 60 miles of range can be added after just 2 hours of charging. A sandwich-floor design contains the battery pack, preserving interior and luggage space while keeping the pack low for optimal weight distribution. Japanese electric car 'goes 300km' on single charge Electric vehicle specialist SIM-Drive, which hopes to take the car to market by 2013 but gave no projected cost, said its four-seater "SIM-LEI" had motors inside each wheel and a s u p e r - l i g h t f ra m e , a l l ow i n g f o r 3 3 3 kilometres (207 miles) of motoring on one charge in a test. Its designers say they hope the prototype, a joint project among 34 organisations including Mitsubishi Motors and engineering firm IHI, will be sold to car manufacturers for mass production. SIM-Drive Corporation, a Japanese consortium based in Kawasaki-shi and comprised of 34 companies and municipalities, has announced that it has developed a functioning electric car based on in-wheel electric motor technology.
Named, the SIM-LEI, (Leading Efficiency InWheel motor), the electric vehicle (EV) is roughly the same length as a sedan but only as wide as a compact. It supports the same lithium-ion batteries (supplied by Toyota Corp) as most other EVs on the market and can travel over two hundred miles on a charge. What's unique about the SIM-LEI though, of course are the in-line electric wheels. While traditional cars have their motors under the hood, including most EVs, the SIM-LEI, uses small electric motors mounted in the individual wheel housings behind the tires. These motors than drive the wheels directly, rather than using a drive shaft, which makes them far more efficient than other cars. Until now, inwheel motors have been thought to lack

Journey of
Electric Cars
J
ourney of Electric car began in late 1800s and early 1900s. The concept of car was introduced way back in 15th century by world renowned painter, sculptor, inventor and scientist Leonardo da Vinci who designed a primitive version of the car . Most of the initial Electric Cars made in 18th and 19th century resembled horse-drawn carriages, rather most automobiles looked like that at that time. The first working electric motor and electric vehicle, a small locomotive that used two electromagnets, a pivot and a battery, was built by Thomas Davenport, an American from Vermont, in 1834. Robert Anderson of Scotland and Sibrandus Stratingh, a Dutch inventor also built electric carriages. After just a few decades of improv-ement, electric cars around this time were clean, quiet and relatively efficient.
Japan was trying to rebuild the infrastructure that was destroyed during World War II and it was a difficult situation for the country as raw materials were limited and gasoline was rationed. A team of engineers from Ta c h i k a w a A i r p l a n e C o m p a n y ( l a t e r renamed Tokyo Electric Motorcar Co. and then Price Motor Company and merged with Nissan in 1966) came up with an excellent idea of a revolutionary vehicle that could run
The electric car manufacturing industry was relatively robust and successful. In 1900, for instance, out of the total of 2,370 automobiles found in New York, Chicago and Boston, 800 of those cars were fully electric, only 400 cars were powered by gasoline and the remaining 1,170 were steam-powered automobiles.

o n e l e c t r i c i t y. T h i s legendary vehicle was named Tama and it used a 36-volt lead-acid battery to achieve 60 miles of range and had a top speed of 22 miles per hour. The vehicle has a wood frame design that is covered in steel. The front-opening "alligator" hood of the Tama was odd at that time, but now every automobile maker follows the same design. The energy crises of the 1970s and 1980s brought a short-lived interest in electric cars; although, those cars did not reach the mass marketing stage, as is the case in the 21st century. Since 2008, a renaissance in electric car manufacturing has occurred due to advances in battery and power management technologies, concerns about increasing oil prices, and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Electric Cars have gone through a long journey starting since the late 1800s to the present world and have faced lot of up and downs. Transformations in the field of technology, structure, style and features all have been a part of the journey. Today global markets are witnessing a boom in the demand for EVs and all major brands are filling the markets with latest and advanced models every now and then. Some of the popular Electric Cars in the markets are Mitsubishi i MiEV, Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius PHV, Toyota RAV4 EV, Honda Fit EV, Honda Insight hybrid electric vehicle, Chevrolet Volt,
Ford Fusion Energi, Tesla Model S and many more. They are sure to be there for long-long time!

Lithium ion Battery in Electric Vehicles
Advantages Ø They hold their charge. A lithium-ion battery pack loses only about 5 percent of its charge per month, compared to a 20 percent loss per month for NiMH batteries. Self discharge cases are very rare in case of Li-ion batteries. Ø There is no Memory effect, which means that you do not have to completely discharge them before recharging, as with some other batteries. Ø Lithium-ion batteries can handle hundreds of charge/discharge cycles. Ø That is not to say that lithium-ion batteries are flawless.
Disadvantages Ø They start degrading as soon as they leave the factory. They will only last two o r t h re e y e a r s f ro m t h e d a t e o f manufacture whether you use them or not. Ø They are extremely sensitive to high temperatures. Heat causes lithium-ion battery packs to degrade much faster than they normally would. Ø A lithium-ion battery pack must have an on-board computer to manage the battery. This makes them even more expensive than they already are.

Electric Vehicles
Terminology Electric Vehicles (EV's):
T
he term "electric vehicle" refers to any vehicle that uses electric motors for propulsion.
Electric Car: It is a subcategory of EV's and generally refers to highway capable automobiles powered by electricity. Electric car's power source is not explicitly an on-board battery, electric cars with motors powered by other energy sources are generally referred by different names: like PEV, PHEV, BEV etc. Plug-in electric vehicle (PEV): Plug-in electric vehicle is a motor vehicle along with rechargeable battery unit that can be

charged from the electric grid, and the electricity stored on them drives the wheels for propulsion. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV): Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle also known as a plug-in hybrid, is a hybrid electric vehicle with rechargeable batteries that can be restored to full charge by connecting a plug to an external electric power source. A plug-in hybrid vehicle operates as an all electric vehicle or BEV while operating in charge depletion mode but switches to charge sustaining mode when the battery reaches the minimum state of charge. PHEVs are configured like a regular hybrid, but with a bigger lithium ion battery pack that can be charged up by plugging in to a regular electricity supply. Pure electric driving is increased over a standard hybrid before the ICE fires up to help power the wheels. PHEVs, as they are known, offer the chance to make short journeys on cheap, zero tailpipe emission electricity but also enable long journeys. Battery electric vehicle (BEV): Battery electric vehicle uses chemical energy stored in rechargeable battery packs as its only source for propulsion. Most often, the term "electric car" is used to refer to battery electric vehicles. The main component in most of the electric vehicle is the battery being used to store the charge and generate power required for the propulsion. Lead-acid batteries:
Phone : +81-47-441-7206 Visit us: www.sayuri.co.jp
Lead-acid batteries were the most used form of power for most of the electric cars used in past. The initial construction costs are significantly lower than for other battery types, while power output to weight is poorer than other designs.
JapaneseCarTrade.com Range and power can be easily added by increasing the number of batteries. The energy density is much lower than that of lithium Ion batteries, which is the current standard. These batteries provide less power output and need frequent charging. Lead acid batteries also have a shorter service life. With the advancements in the technology Batteries have undergone a transformation and now Batteries are available in the market which are able to provide power to the cars for sustainable period of time thus providing a new edge to the electric cars. Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries: The efficiency of Nickel-Metal Hydride battery usually tops out at about 40 percent. Their limits can be increased by doping the material inside with other elements to yield still higher charge densities. These type of batteries are used in some older electric vehicles, offering better energy density than lead acid but less than lithium ion.

an engine or motor before any natural losses in power through components such as a gearbox and other ancillaries. HP "Horsepower" - a unit that is used to measure the power of engines and motors. One unit of horsepower is equal to the power needed to lift 550 pounds one foot in one second. DC - "Direct Current" is an electric current of constant direction. Electric car motors are either DC or AC, with DC motors generally being less expensive to buy and simpler to use on an electric car. AC "Alternating Current" is an electric current that reverses direction at regular intervals. Electric car motors are either AC or DC with most of the new breed being of AC type.
Lithium-ion Batteries (Li-ion battery): These are the current standard electric vehicle batteries, offering good energy density, power and fast charging ability. The life of a lithium Ion battery is estimated to be the same as the life of the car. Of course 'end of life' here does not mean the cars or batteries won't work - after 10 years a lithium ion battery is expected to be at 80% efficiency, so they will still be usable replacement will be a choice, not a requirement. They are expensive now, but prices will reduce over time as more EVs hit the road.

Working of Electric Cars the cars for sustainable period of time thus providing a new edge to the electric cars. While most current highway-speed electric car designs focus on lithium-ion and other lithium-based variants a variety of alternative batteries can also be used. Lithium based batteries are often chosen for their high power and energy density but have
A
n Electric car is powered by an electric motor rather than a gasoline engine. From outside, there would probably be no idea that a car is electric. In most cases, electric cars are created by converting a gasoline-powered car, and in that case it is impossible to tell. When you drive an electric car, often the only thing that clues in to its true nature is the fact that it is nearly silent. But from inside there is great difference between the Electric and Gasoline Cars. The array of rechargeable batteries gives power to the controller. The controller provides power to the electric motor which in turn provides an instant torque to electric car and create smooth acceleration. The main component which differs the Electric vehicles from the gasoline vehicles is battery and the charging technology. All the mechanism in an electric vehicle depends on the power supplied from the array of batteries. With the advancements in the technology Batteries have undergone a transformation and now Batteries are available in the market which are able to provide power to
a limited shelf-life and cycle lifetime which can significantly increase the running costs of the car. Variants such as Lithium iron phosphate and Lithium-titanate attempt to solve the durability issues with traditional lithium-ion batteries. It is also possible that older battery technologies such as Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, whose efficiency usually tops out at about 40 percent, may see their limits stretched, as the materials inside are doped with other elements to yield still higher charge densities. Several battery technologies are also in development such as Zinc-air battery, Molten salt battery, Zinc-bromine flow batteries or Vanadium redox batteries that can be refilled, instead of recharged, saving time. The depleted electrolyte can be recharged at the point of exchange, or taken away to a remote station.

Australian Automobile Association is opposing wider opening to second hand cars The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) and the automobile industry of Australia have declared their strong opposition to the opening of the local market to imported used vehicles, as advocated last month by the Productivity Commission. In 2013, the last 3 car manufacturers in Australia have announced their decision to close their plants by year 2017. At that date, no more new cars will be manufactured in Australia, and every new car on the market would have to come from abroad. The AAA claims that opening the market widely to imported used vehicles would wipe out a large part of the value of the cars already on the road in Australia for now and make price competition to the locally sold used vehicles. One concern may be the 360,000 units of company cars that should be sold on the local used vehicle market in the next 2 years. We can understand that it may be considered a little too early to open the market to used vehicles, but anyway, it will have to be done by year 2017, and it will certainly not be opened without restrictions. For instance, Australia’s neighbor, New Zealand, is importing a large number of used vehicles from Japan but with strict regulations about the year of manufacture and the emissions standards.
