Thanks for talking with me today, Albana. Where were you born? What are some of your fondest memories?
Thank you Rudina for the possibility that you give me!
I am Albana Dorda, I was born in Tirana, Albanian capital city. I had very beautiful childhood memories. I remember that I liked to be very social and to have a lot of friends, that I still have present in my life.
I was a smart kid and I had a great imagination for how my life was going to be, but I had never thought I was going to be a business woman.
Your business drive is impressive. When did you first encounter or realize your entrepreneurial spirit? I started working at the company, when I was only 25 years old. Working in the wine and high-quality products industry requires to create information, to learn new skills, to innovate and experiment. First step and trust has been from the owner of this industry. He encouraged me to be in direct contacts with the customers and the suppliers. I was the first to take part at the wine fairs in Italy and France.
You are the Brand Manager of Alkos Group Albania. How has this experience been so far? How have you managed to be unique and equip the company with a commercial appeal?
I believe that this experience in Alkos Group Albania is one of the best in my life.
The strategy of our company and the Group is to collaborate with the best that have created history in the wine and food industry, to select family collaboration, chefs in the production of sweets and food and high-quality processing products.
Being unique means to keep looking for new products and keep yourself updated.
What made you fall in love with the world of marketing of import & export industry? What particular moments in time pushed you to pursue this career?
I started to love my job the very moment I began to reap the fruits of my hard work and when I saw the customers happy with my work.
The contact with the world
is wonderful when you have friends-collaborators to work with. I also find wonderful to learn every day to innovate, to enjoy working with clients and to develop creative strategies as well as to come up with an innovative product or solution.
Where do you look for creative inspiration?
The founder and the owner of this business inspired me. He runs this business for more than 30 years, with the same energy as before. He was the one who inspired and trusted me in the first place.
The positive responses I have received after presentations and the requests for cooperation from important foreign distributors have inspired me to continue my work.
Give us a sneak peek of how you typically start your day.
My day starts with a coffee, some meditation and some Italian old songs in the background…
At 9:00, I am at Santa Margherita, grabbing the second coffee and starting to work. What makes my work days beautiful and not monotonous is the fact that
I am constantly in touch with various customers and suppliers.

It has been shaped by a blend of entrepreneurial ventures, academic pursuits, and a commitment to fostering positive change,” she says while tells what it takes to strike work-life balance.
Read full interview below:
Thank you, Dr. Ivana Nobilo for sitting with us. Looking at your career, I am impressed by your mix of fields you cover so masterfully. How did it all start?
Reflecting on my career journey, it’s fascinating to see how various interests and experiences have woven together to shape my professional path. It all began with a deep-seated curiosity and a passion for understanding the world around me. From a young age, I was always eager to learn, explore, and challenge myself in new ways.
My entrepreneurial spirit was sparked early on. I launched my first start-up in the marketing sector, driven by a desire to create innovative solutions and bring ideas to life. This venture quickly grew into a full-service marketing agency, achieving significant success in just a few years. Our agency organized and produced major events, collaborated with renowned personalities like Plácido Domingo and Michael Bolton, and executed highbudget marketing campaigns. This initial foray into entrepreneurship taught me the importance of vision, resilience, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
As my career progressed, I became increasingly drawn to the field of education. I pursued a PhD in Management, which allowed me to delve deeper into organizational behaviour, leadership, and strategic management. Establishing and leading the Business School in Geneva. was a pivotal moment. It provided an opportunity to combine my entrepreneurial skills with my passion for education, creating an institution that excelled in both online and residential learning.
Simultaneously, I recognized the profound impact that effective coaching and training could have on individuals and organizations. This realization led me to become an
Executive Trainer and Transformation Coach. Over the past decade, I have focused on conducting comprehensive diagnostics, initiating changes in organizational behavior, and developing diversity and inclusion programs. Helping companies cultivate an entrepreneurial culture where people are empowered to make decisions and take risks has been incredibly rewarding.
Throughout my journey, my insatiable hunger for knowledge has remained a constant driving force. I have always sought to understand people, processes, and causes at a deeper level, often exploring the intersections of different fields. My interest in quantum physics and the integration of scientific and alternative tools and techniques exemplify this holistic approach.
In essence, my career has been a continuous journey of exploration, learning,
and transformation. It has been shaped by a blend of entrepreneurial ventures, academic pursuits, and a commitment to fostering positive change. Each experience has built upon the last, creating a rich tapestry of skills and insights that I bring to every project and challenge I undertake.
What makes you feel most fulfilled in your job?
What truly brings me fulfilment in my job is the ability to drive meaningful change and transformation at both the organizational and individual levels. As a Consultant, Executive Trainer, and Transformation Coach, I find immense satisfaction in witnessing the tangible impacts of my work. Whether it’s helping a company navigate complex changes, fostering an entrepreneurial culture, or guiding an individual through a personal transformation, seeing the positive outcomes of my efforts is incredibly rewarding.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my career is my role in developing and implementing diversity and inclusion programs. Creating environments where individuals feel valued, empowered, and capable of reaching their full potential is a core passion of mine. I
believe that diversity and inclusion are not just moral imperatives but also key drivers of innovation and organizational success.
Additionally, I derive great joy from my educational pursuits. Lecturing at the college level and sharing my research with eager minds allows me to contribute to the next generation of leaders. Seeing students and professionals gain new insights, develop critical skills, and achieve their goals because of my guidance is a constant source of inspiration and pride.
As an entrepreneur, the journey of turning innovative ideas into successful businesses has been incredibly gratifying. The process of building something from the ground up, overcoming challenges, and ultimately seeing it thrive in the market brings a deep sense of accomplishment.
Ultimately, my fulfilment comes from knowing that my work makes a difference. Whether through coaching, consulting, lecturing, or entrepreneurship, my goal is always to add value, inspire change, and help others succeed. This continuous pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and impact is what keeps me motivated and fulfilled in my career.
How does a successful, strong, and powerful woman like you navigate work, employee relationships at Les Roches, family life and others? Can you tell us more about this?
Navigating the various facets of my lifework, relationships at Les Roches, family, and social connections—requires a
delicate balance and a great deal of support. First and foremost, having a good partner and a supportive team is crucial. Without their help and encouragement, it would be impossible to manage everything effectively.
At work, especially in a dynamic environment like Les Roches, building strong, trusting relationships with employees and colleagues is essential. I strive to foster a culture of openness, respect, and collaboration, where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. This not only enhances our work environment but also ensures we achieve our goals together.
Balancing family life is another vital aspect. I am fortunate to have a partner who understands and supports my career ambitions. Their unwavering support allows me to pursue my professional goals without compromising our family life. We communicate openly and share
responsibilities, ensuring that our home remains a place of mutual support and love.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that it’s not possible to have everything perfect all the time. Balancing these various roles comes with its challenges and sacrifices. I’ve found a recipe that works for me, my family, friends, and colleagues. I allow myself to be “unsuccessful” and “bad” in one area of my life each day of the week. For example, one day I might be an unsuccessful mother, another day an unsuccessful wife, then an unsuccessful employer, professor, colleague, or friend. This approach helps me manage the inevitable imperfections and pressures of life.
By giving myself permission to not be perfect all the time, I reduce stress and maintain a healthier, more sustainable balance. It’s about being kind to oneself and recognizing that being human means having off days. Overall, I strive to give my best and consistently add value in each of my roles. This mindset has helped me maintain harmony and effectiveness across my personal and professional life.
In essence, the key to navigating these multiple roles is support, understanding, and a realistic approach to perfection. By surrounding myself with a strong network and embracing a flexible mindset, I manage to keep moving forward and making meaningful contributions in all areas of my life.
Our readers would like to get to know you a bit more about your entrepreneurship “backstory”? Have you felt the support of your male colleagues in this environment?
My journey into entrepreneurship has been both exhilarating and challenging, marked by numerous experiences that have shaped
who I am today. It all started with a strong desire to create something unique and impactful. My first venture was a full-service marketing agency, which I launched with a clear vision and a lot of determination. Within just two years, we managed to rank as the second-best agency for events and public relations in the ex-Yugoslavia market, catering to a 25 million people market. This success was fuelled by the passion and hard work of my team and our shared commitment to excellence.
The agency gave me the opportunity to work with some incredible personalities and organizations, including Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Montserrat Caballé, Michael Bolton, and FC Barcelona. These experiences were not just professionally rewarding but also personally enriching, as they taught me the importance of collaboration, creativity, and strategic thinking.
Following the success of the marketing agency, I ventured into other areas, including a consulting agency for organizational management and an
agency focused on developing well-being programs. Each of these ventures allowed me to explore new fields, understand diverse market needs, and develop solutions that drive positive change.
One of the most memorable projects was leading a crisis communication case, which is still studied in Croatian business schools as a model case study. Additionally, leading Mr. Marković’s last winning campaign for president of the Croatian Football Federation and managing various high-budget marketing campaigns were significant milestones that further honed my skills and broadened my perspective.
As a woman in entrepreneurship, I have had the privilege of working alongside many supportive male colleagues. Their encouragement and collaboration have been instrumental in my journey. In the early stages, especially, having mentors and partners who believed in my vision and capabilities provided the confidence and support needed to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that the entrepreneurial environment can sometimes be male-dominated, which presents its own set of challenges. I have encountered instances where I had to assert myself more firmly to be heard and recognized. These experiences have only strengthened my resolve and underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive culture in every organization I am part of.
The support of my male colleagues has been invaluable, and I have always advocated for mutual respect and collaboration. I believe that success is best achieved when diverse perspectives and talents come together to innovate and create value. This inclusive approach not only benefits the business but also creates a more enriching and dynamic work environment.
Overall, my entrepreneurial backstory is one of passion, perseverance, and continuous learning. It’s a journey that has been made possible by the support of many, including my male colleagues, and I am deeply grateful for their contributions to my success
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?
Choosing just one interesting story from my career feels like trying to pick a favorite star from the sky – there are so many that shine brightly in my memory. However, one particularly unforgettable experience stands out, combining elements of music, spontaneity, and a touch of magic.
It was during the organization of concert featuring Tose Proeski and some other
Posing
singers at a stadium in Mostar. The excitement was palpable as we prepared for the event, with rehearsals taking place under the warm afternoon sun.
During one of the rehearsal breaks, a moment occurred that I will never forget. As the singers waited for their turn, Tose Proeski stood in the center of the stadium. With no audience around, he suddenly began to sing, directing his performance solely to me.
We stood close, face to face, eyes locked, as his voice filled the air with an intimate serenade. The sheer power and emotion in his voice were captivating, creating a private concert moment that felt almost surreal.
But the musical magic didn’t end there.
A while later, after another concert at the iconic Albert Hall, I found myself backstage with Michael Bolton. Exhausted yet exhilarated from his performance, he embraced me warmly, leaning slightly on my shoulder. Then, as if to add a personal touch to an already incredible night, he began to sing “Georgia,” my favorite song.
His voice, filled with soul and tenderness, created an unforgettable moment of connection and shared passion for music.
These experiences reinforced for me the profound impact that music and personal connections can have. They also highlighted the unpredictability and sheer joy that comes with working in the entertainment industry. It’s these magical, unexpected moments that make all the hard work worthwhile and create memories that last a lifetime.
Since then, I’ve had many more adventures, traveling the world, lecturing, coaching, and working with students from all corners of the globe. Yet, those moments with Tose Proeski and Michael Bolton remain some of the most cherished highlights of my career.
You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success? Can you please share a story or example for each?
I would say Resilience, Vision and Empathy.
Resilience has been a cornerstone of my success, enabling me to navigate the inevitable challenges and setbacks that come with entrepreneurship and leadership. One vivid example of this was during the early days of my first start-up, a full-service marketing agency. We faced intense competition and had to secure major clients to establish our credibility. There were moments when setbacks felt overwhelming, but my resilience kept me pushing forward. I remember a particularly tough project where we had to organize a large-scale event for a high-profile client under tight deadlines. Despite numerous obstacles, including last-minute changes
and logistical challenges, we delivered an outstanding event. This experience reinforced my belief that resilience is key to overcoming adversity and achieving success.
Having a clear vision and the ability to think strategically has been crucial in shaping my career. When I embarked on creating an innovative educational project, my vision was to develop a comprehensive program that combined cutting-edge technology with accessible, high-quality learning experiences. This vision guided every decision, from developing unique curricula to assembling a talented team. A specific example of visionary thinking in action was our decision to integrate advanced digital tools into our online programs, making education accessible to students globally. This forward-thinking approach not only differentiated our offerings but also positioned us as leaders in the educational landscape.
Empathy has played a significant role in my ability to lead and inspire others. Understanding and valuing the perspectives and emotions of my colleagues, clients, and students have fostered strong, trusting relationships. One story that highlights the importance of empathy occurred during my time as an executive coach. I was working with a senior professional who was struggling with a significant career transition. By actively listening and empathizing with his concerns, I was able to provide tailored guidance that helped him navigate the change successfully. This not only reinforced his confidence but also strengthened our professional relationship. Empathy allowed me to connect with him on a deeper level, ultimately leading to a more positive outcome.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market told TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE/The Women Edition that the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) is central to the ever-evolving travel and tourism landscape across the ME region. “It has gone from humble beginnings as a centric event servicing the ME region to a large-scale International Travel and tourism trade fair,” Mrs. Curtis, who keeps this role for the last six years, states.
She has been distinguished for the successful execution of the exhibition and all associated travel projects throughout the region.
With this goal about ATM in her mind, to connect the right buyer to the supplier, Mrs. Curtis is working more and more to constantly make the ATM deliver the right value and evolve with industry trends, “ultimately creating a trusted platform for customers to keep coming back.”
In her view, Dubai has added value to ATM.
“Dubai’s allure further enhances ATM’s attractiveness. The city’s world-class infrastructure, luxurious accommodations, and diverse cultural offerings provide an exceptional backdrop for this premier event,” she says.
Mrs. Curtis and her Team are still in the ATM’s planning stages. “However, we can expect significant growth, driven by the booming travel and tourism sectors in the Middle East, Africa (MEA), and Asia-Pacific (APAC) regions,” she concludes.
Full interview below:
Throughout this journey, one thing has remained constant: the customer is always at the heart of any business or event planning. Understanding their values and what drives their decisions is fundamental to creating exceptional experiences.
How long have you been the Exhibition Director of Arabian Travel Market, and how would you best describe the ATM’s mission and goals? Have they changed or developed since the ATM’s foundation in 1994 with the participation of 52 nations, 300 exhibitors and 7,000 trade visitors?
For over 15 years, I’ve been a part of the Reed Exhibitions (RX) team. In the last six years, I’ve been the Exhibition Director for Arabian Travel Market (ATM). In this role, I’ve been responsible for the successful execution of the exhibition and all associated travel projects throughout the region. Prior to this, I was the Global Head of Sales for the IBTM Portfolio, where I was responsible for the event’s strategy.
I’ve been fortunate to have enjoyed several positions within the industry, each one contributing to my growth and learning. From a receptionist role to where I am today, I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and the experiences that have shaped my career.
Throughout this journey, one thing has remained constant: the customer is always at the heart of any business or event planning. Understanding their values and what drives their decisions is fundamental
to creating exceptional experiences.
ATM is central to the ever-evolving travel and tourism landscape across the ME region. It has gone from humble beginnings as a centric event servicing the ME region to a large-scale International Travel and tourism trade fair.
The goals are simple: connecting the right buyer to the supplier. We drive this through analysis of our customers’ needs. Hence, we deliver the right value and evolve with industry trends, ultimately creating a trusted platform for customers to keep coming back.
What’s new for the 2025 edition? What can we expect from it? What will the focus be?
We’re still in the planning stages, with our theme yet to be confirmed. However, we can expect significant growth, driven by the booming travel and tourism sectors in the Middle East, Africa (MEA), and Asia-Pacific (APAC) regions.
The hotel and travel technology segment is expected to continue its upward trajectory, remaining a key growth area for the event, while the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) and Luxury segments
represent promising new expansion opportunities.
A central theme within the industry will be Artificial Intelligence (AI). As technology advances, AI is transforming consumer expectations and empowering the industry to reimagine travel experiences. This focus on AI will be essential in shaping the future of the event and the broader travel industry.
Ultimately, we want to provide a platform for the global travel industry to come together, meet, and do business.
What makes ATM stand apart? What do you think has sparked a newfound interest for the ATM?
ATM consistently sets and follows industry trends through its comprehensive content and extensive networking opportunities. Dubai serves as a central hub, and significant investments in travel and tourism development across the region have garnered substantial international interest. For instance, Dubai attracted over 16 million tourists in 2023, showcasing its appeal as a top travel destination.
ATM’s entrepreneurial spirit allows it to capture the dynamic landscape of the
travel industry under one roof. The market is vibrant, attracting new suppliers and eager buyers across all key verticals, including Luxury, Leisure, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) segments. This buoyant market reflects a promising future for industry stakeholders.
Dubai’s allure further enhances ATM’s attractiveness. The city’s world-class infrastructure, luxurious accommodations, and diverse cultural offerings provide an exceptional backdrop for this premier event. As a result, ATM mirrors the industry’s current trends and shapes its future by bringing together key players in an environment conducive to doing business.
There are similar events or fairs that double or even triple their locations over the years in other cities around the world. If you could imagine an extension of Arabian Travel Market in another country, what could it be?
At RX, we are continuously exploring opportunities for acquisitions, mergers, and the strategic expansion of our brands into new regions and countries. This proactive approach allows us to extend our market reach and enhance our portfolio.
With ATM, our primary focus remains on strengthening our core brand. We are committed to expanding our existing profiles while also creating new and relevant adjacencies that align with our strategic vision. These initiatives are designed to add significant value to our current customers and attract new audiences.
I believe that my journey is a testament to the power of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It shows how, when given the opportunity, individuals from all backgrounds can make valuable contributions and help shape a more dynamic and resilient industry.
Our expansion strategy is planned to ensure every move we make enhances our brand’s reputation and meets the evolving needs of the travel and tourism industry. By maintaining a balance between organic growth and strategic partners and coalignments, we ensure that ATM continues to be a leader in the market, providing unparalleled opportunities for networking, innovation, and growth.
How do you regard the tourism development trends in the world in general and in Dubai in particular? In your view, what is the key to the constantly reinvented interest in tourism in Dubai?
Globally, the travel and tourism sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience in recovery and is expected to exceed prepandemic levels by an impressive 11.5% this year. The Middle East’s travel and tourism sector has witnessed impressive growth in recent years, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 13.2%. This growth within the region has been primarily driven by key countries such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Dubai and the UAE have proactively developed a vibrant tourism ecosystem and, in the process, secured a position as one of the world’s premier destinations.
This has been achieved through a multifaceted approach, from investment in Emirates, one of the world’s leading airlines, to having some of the most recognisable hotels and landmarks –the launch of Atlantis The Royal was seen by millions around the world, thanks in part to Beyonce, who performed at the official opening ceremony.
Dubai, however, is increasingly catering to all visitors and has accommodation for every budget. This proactive approach has led to remarkable growth in the hotel sector, marking a strong revival in earnings and investments.
Dubai also has an enviable gastronomic scene, attracting some of the world’s most recognisable restaurateurs. Its year-round events calendar, myriads of visitor attractions, and burgeoning cruise sector are putting Dubai on the map and attracting a record number of international visitors.
important
countries like Albania or the Balkans in general?
Tourism plays a vital role in a country’s economic development, acting as a significant source of revenue, employment, and cultural exchange. It has also become a crucial driver of growth in burgeoning tourism markets like Albania and in the broader Balkans region.
The influx of tourists stimulates local economies by creating jobs in hospitality, transportation, and services while also
encouraging investment in infrastructure and preserving cultural sites.
As a woman in this challenging tole, how has this job changed you on a professional and human level?
In a traditionally male-dominated business environment, change is taking place across this region. I am proud to say that I have firmly established my presence within the industry. Despite the historical challenges, I have found my voice and made it heard. This support has significantly boosted my confidence, empowering me to drive meaningful and impactful changes within my role.
From the beginning, I was encouraged to participate actively, and this inclusion has been instrumental in my professional growth. I have been fortunate to work alongside forward-thinking colleagues who value diverse perspectives. This inclusive environment has allowed me to leverage my unique insights and contribute to innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of our industry.
Over time, my confidence has flourished, enabling me to take on more significant responsibilities and lead initiatives that have brought about substantial improvements. Whether it’s implementing new strategies, fostering a more inclusive workplace culture, or advocating for sustainable practices, I have been at the forefront of driving change.
I believe that my journey is a testament to the power of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It shows how, when given the opportunity, individuals from all backgrounds can make valuable contributions and help shape a more dynamic and resilient industry. As the landscape continues to evolve, I am excited to be a part of this transformation and to inspire others to find their voice and make a difference.
I have actually come to realise that my dream is starting to come true. ATM has firmly established itself as a must-attend event within the international calendar of travel and tourism exhibitions. Our focus now is on harnessing this success and continuously adding value for both the event and the customers we serve.
“My personal objective in this first year of operations is to give shape to our image as the best business hotel with high standards so that Mercure Hotel gets its most deserving position in Tirana Market, eventually resulting in high sales performance and topline.”
This is how Idit Daka opens up her exclusive interview with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE/The Women Edition.
She highlights what makes Mercure Hotel Tirana attractive in terms of offering excellence in hospitality. “Mercure Hotel Tirana is a hotel that has a very clear objective regarding its presence in Tirana. It is already showing the difference it makes with the best service offered only 4 months after opening its doors,” Daka states adding “Our staff is passionate, attentive, and very motivated to work; their energy can be felt once you enter the lobby, you get the feeling that you will be taken care of and be comfortable during your stay.”
Full interview below:
Welcome Idit to TRAILBLAZINGMAGAZINE/ The Women Edition. Please tell us more about your journey until you ended up as Director of Sales & Marketing at Mercure Hotel Tirana?
We, Albanians, are naturally driven to be hosts, our families have taught us to be kind and welcoming to guests as well as invite them in our houses. We give to our guests the best room in the house, the best food and our most sincere positive feelings.
My journey in hospitality started at a small hotel in south Albania, in Drymades, a seasonal work which in my opinion is the best way for young people to explore their potential.
The experience and feelings I got from that period have accompanied me since then. I was lucky to find out in my first attempt that in life i wanted to do hospitality was the passion of my life.
A hotel can be your second family, everyone has its place and his duties, just the same as in a household. Everybody is there to make things better, make guests feel that they are taken care of and fulfil their requirements.
All staff is working towards a common aim day to day, no matter of the personal problems and this is what makes hospitality a very special industry.
Since 2012, I have been working in this sector, from sales & marketing to product manager in tourism agency, event organizer, project manager for fairs and exhibitions.
I had the honor to work for some of the biggest agencies and hotels in the country; also as a consultant for international companies looking to extend their presence in Albania and the Balkans.
These years of hard work in this sector have expanded my network and enriched it with individuals which I am very lucky to have in my life. This has resulted to personal fulfilment and efficiency in many directions of my professional life.

concept, brought by an international very wellknown brand as Accor, which aims to lead the way for other Accor brand hotels in Albania.
Mercure Tirana is a managed hotel, which to me means a lot in terms of image, visibility, standards and security.
What do you regard as the main challenge when launching a new property such as Mercure Hotel Tirana? What is your main objective in this position?
There are many challenges when opening a hotel.
The main challenge for the Sales and Marketing department is to raise awareness about the brand-new hotel that will be added to the capital.
Among others, this includes a promotion plan and a series of meetings with all potential partners and collaborators. This phase intensively takes about 1 to 2 years until the sales are stable and the hotel is well known in the country and beyond.
My personal objective in this first year of operations is to give shape to our image as the best business hotel with high standards so that Mercure Hotel gets its most deserving position in Tirana Market, eventually resulting in sales performance and topline.
Which channels have resulted in more success for you to raise awareness of the property?
Accor has its own selling channel with a very large network, and for us is the main selling platform - Accor.com. There are many other Online Tour Operators boosting our sales.
These platforms are very efficient not only for the hotel itself but also for the destination, many guests visit Tirana and Albania for the first time and one of the reasons is because of a brand hotel they know and trust.
How would you describe Mercure Hotel Tirana? What makes this Hotel attractive in terms of offering excellence in hospitality?
Mercure Hotel Tirana is a hotel that has a very clear objective regarding its presence in Tirana. It is already showing the difference it makes with the best service offered only 4 months after opening its doors.
Our staff is passionate, attentive, and very motivated to work; their energy can be felt once you enter the lobby, you get the feeling that you will be taken care of and be comfortable during your stay.
My personal objective in this first year of operations is to give shape to our image as the best business hotel with high standards so that Mercure Hotel gets its most deserving position in Tirana Market, eventually resulting in sales performance and topline.

Already a serious player in luxury, having worked with several major name brands, Liza Kovalyova is now aiming to set the stage for developing an exceptional product in the beauty industry. And that process includes studying an Executive Master’s program at Glion Institute of Higher Education.
“I don’t think big, I think huge!”
And why not, considering the significant personal impact that Italian national Liza Kovalyova has already made on the business of luxury.
Appropriately enough, her journey began with studying fashion design in Milan – one of the true capitals of the luxury world.
“This unforgettable experience gave me a profound understanding of the fashion industry, its dynamics, and its ever-evolving trends,” she explains. “Spending 12 years in Milan, I developed a deep appreciation for the artistry, craftsmanship, exclusivity and innovation that define the luxury sector.”
After graduating, Liza dived deeply into the fashion world, acquiring what she describes as “360-degree experience” that encompassed fashion design and trend forecasting, product development, sales, retail, and business strategy. This period also gave her the opportunity to collaborate with iconic brands like YSL, Seven7 Los Angeles, and Dior, gaining exposure to every facet of the industry.
Inspired by this stellar start in the business, Liza decided to create a freeto-use online trend forecasting platform, inviting followers to also become
creators of the inspirational boards. And so the Thoughts on Elegance platform came into life on the social media site Pinterest, subsequently building an audience of more than 90,000 followers.
“This project really enhanced my skills in digital marketing, community engagement, and trend analysis, while also elevating my consumer interactions,” she notes.
Much of that learning was put to good use when Liza launched her own clothing brand – LIKOV – which sold through major platforms such as Amazon, Instagram and Facebook, alongside boutiques across Europe.
She says of that venture, “This experience refined my skills in brand development, from sketching and collection development to coordinating with factories for garment construction and managing direct sales and e-commerce strategies.”
And Liza’s entrepreneurial endeavors continue today, through her luxury/ultraluxury consultancy Peel Me A Grape
“Working alongside industry leaders has equipped me to consistently meet the high expectations of luxury consumers, providing exceptional customer service and crafting memorable experiences,” she explains. “That was the inspiration for my agency, which is focused not only on creating exceptional products that elevate brand value, but also on helping brands to play a meaningful role in the lives of their customers.”
The demands of running the agency meant that a full-time graduate study program was out of the question for Liza. So instead she began researching flexibly taught executive education.
“Having already built up expertise in the fashion industry, and gained profound knowledge of luxury brands, I wanted a program that would allow me to complement this with brand management and strategic skills, help me master analytical tools, understand luxury brand dynamics, and adapt to digital and omnichannel strategies. After extensive research, I chose the Executive Master’s in Luxury Management & Guest Experience at Glion,” she says.
“I particularly appreciate that the program is designed for experienced professionals who can study online without disrupting their careers and daily lives. The flexibility to connect from any location is a significant advantage. Additionally, learning from a global group of lecturers – who are also business leaders and consultants – and mixing with students from diverse industries provides incredible networking opportunities and potential career advancements.”
Online study is at the heart of this executive Master’s, but there are also residential weeks which provide an opportunity to experience face-to-face teaching as well as offering superb networking opportunities. Liza has recently undertaken her program’s second residential week, which took her to the prime luxury destination of London.
“As it was our second residential week, I was extremely excited about the program and the opportunity to see my peers – who
have become dear friends – in person. The trip was amazing, and for me one of the genuine highlights was a guided tour of one of my favorite museums, the V&A. We also had an exclusive introduction to the private members’ club George, renowned for its exclusivity, sophistication, and tailored services, and which is part of the esteemed Birley Group. It was fascinating to learn about their business approach, membership process, and marketing strategy in detail.”
On-campus, Liza found the lecture on Retail Management, presented by Erica Amoroso and Sharon Cohen from Burberry, especially insightful.
Now Liza is looking forward to the Business Research Project (BRP) which will conclude her Executive Master’s program. She notes, “I firmly believe that my BRP will set the stage for the development of an exceptional product in the beauty industry; one that will redefine our perceptions and usage of beauty products. My goal is for this initiative to lead to a collaboration with a prestigious luxury brand or the founding of a startup.”
And she concluded with some wise advice to other experienced professionals who may be mulling their lifelong learning options.
“It is never too late to invest in yourself, to learn, and to expand your horizons. Doing so not only helps you grow professionally and advance in your career, but it will also bring personal fulfillment, completely changing your mindset, and will surely be an emotionally rewarding experience.”

The name of Flora Manuka is intertwined with Acibadem, a distinguished brand, recognized globally as a leader in healthcare with its 24 hospitals, 16 outpatient clinics, and supporting service companies.
With a diploma in Economics and Politics, and a Master in Health Management, she joined Acibadem in 2011 and since then, she has been grown professionally alongside with this notable Turkish Hospital. “Acibadem is the best healthcare group, which aligns perfectly with my decision and professional skills,” Flora says in this exclusive interview with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE/The WOMEN EDITION.
“I first encountered the name Acibadem at the beginning of 2011. My primary goal was to introduce this renowned brand to Albania from the start. We successfully opened an office in early 2012, and since that day, I have served as the Manager for Albania and all Albanian-speaking countries, assisting Albanians with various
healthcare needs and concerns,” she states.
According to her, this office plays a crucial role. “It acts as a “window” into the larger Acibadem group within our country.”
Full interview below:
Thank you, Flora, for participating in this interview!
What is your personal story? How did you get to where you are today? How did your interest in the healthcare and hospitals sector begin?
First of all, thank you very much for the invitation and for being part of your magazine. Well, to be sincere, nothing happened by accident. I am here because of hard work.
“Acıbadem is a distinguished brand, recognized globally as a leader in healthcare with its 24 hospitals, 16 outpatient clinics, and supporting service companies. Acıbadem’s rapid growth led to a joint partnership with IHH Healthcare in 2012, which enabled us to become part of the world’s second-largest healthcare chain.”
In life, I believe the key to success is work. Of course, you have to seize opportunities, possess certain skills, and invest in your personal and professional growth. My journey into the healthcare and hospitals sector began with a strong desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Over time, through dedication and continuous learning, I found my passion and direction in this field.
Your name has been associated with Acibadem Hospital for some years now. Could you please describe your role and responsibilities at Acibadem Hospital?
Yes, this is true. I first encountered the name Acibadem at the beginning of 2011. My primary goal was to introduce this renowned brand to Albania from the start. Given that Acibadem is a serious and established group, we needed to proceed step by step, including conducting a feasibility study to decide on establishing a hospital here. However, this did not hinder my collaboration with the group. We successfully opened an office in early 2012, and since that day, I have served as the Manager for Albania and all Albanianspeaking countries, assisting Albanians with various healthcare needs and concerns.
While an office might seem small from the outside, it plays a crucial role. It acts as a “window” into the larger Acibadem group within our country.
Acıbadem is a distinguished brand, recognized globally as a leader in healthcare with its 24 hospitals, 16 outpatient clinics, and supporting service companies. Acıbadem’s rapid growth led to a joint partnership with IHH Healthcare in 2012, which enabled us to become part of the world’s second-largest healthcare chain.
Our journey of expanding internationally began in 2011 with the establishment of Acıbadem Sistina Hospital in Skopje, Macedonia. This was followed by the acquisition of the Tokuda Group and City Clinic Group in Bulgaria in 2016, making Acıbadem Healthcare Group the largest healthcare service provider in Bulgaria. Our international footprint continued to grow with the launch of Acıbadem International Medical Center in Amsterdam in 2017, boasting an indoor area of 5,000 square meters. In 2021, the acquisition of Acıbadem Belmedic in Serbia further expanded our presence, resulting in 24 hospitals and 16 outpatient clinics across five countries.
Why did you decide to relate your career specifically with this hospital, and what academic and professional experiences helped you determine that this area was the right one for you?
My mother worked in the health sector and always wanted all her children to become doctors. However, except for my older sister, none of us followed in her footsteps. In life, two things are inevitable: the need for a doctor and a lawyer. I became neither, but I decided to be part of the healthcare sector as a manager.
I studied Economics and Politics, and my Master’s was in Health Management. This combination of academic backgrounds suited my interests and career aspirations. In marketing, it’s not about being the best but about being the first. In healthcare, it’s different—it’s not about being the first but about being the best. Acibadem is the best healthcare group, which aligns perfectly with my decision and professional skills.
In what ways is the Acibadem Hospital contributing to improving Albanians’ lives?
We are the focal point of the Turkish health tourism and we have more than 50.000 patients, annually. We operate in 5 continents, 96 countries, 90 therapeutical
areas, and as Acıbadem International Patient Center, we are 260 employees in charge of comprehensive 360 degrees healthcare services from scheduling patients’ treatment before arrival to assisting their travel back home.
What has been the most difficult decision you have had to make in your career to date?
In all kinds of work, there comes a point and a day when you have to make hard decisions, and considering that I deal with lives, it makes it even more difficult. I’ve had many such moments, but the most challenging was during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, there were no race or classes; we all had to step up and help. The urgency and gravity of the situation meant we had to make quick, tough decisions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our patients and staff. It was an incredibly challenging time, but it underscored the critical importance of our work in healthcare.
One particularly difficult decision was implementing strict protocols and deciding which services to prioritize when resources were limited. Balancing the needs of COVID-19 patients with those requiring other critical medical care was a constant
struggle, while also maintaining a high standard of care for all patients, required decisive and often rapid decision-making.
A heart-wrenching aspect of this period was deciding which patients to prioritize for treatment when resources like ventilators and ICU beds were in short supply. These decisions were not just clinical but deeply ethical. We had to evaluate patients based on who had the best chance of survival and recovery, which sometimes meant making the painful choice to focus on one patient over another. Each decision was made with the utmost care and compassion, but the emotional burden was immense. Knowing that every decision could mean life or death added an incredible weight to the role of healthcare management during the pandemic.
Additionally, the emotional toll on both staff and patients was immense. Providing support and maintaining morale in such a high-pressure environment was another layer of difficulty. This period reinforced my belief in the resilience and dedication of our healthcare professionals and highlighted the importance of leadership, clear communication, and adaptability in times of crisis
Is there a particular female leader that you admire or are inspired by and would like to highlight?
Yes, while I admire Richard Branson for his innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, there are also remarkable female leaders who inspire me greatly. Two who stand out are Angela Merkel and Kamala Harris.
Angela Merkel, the former Chancellor of Germany, is a leader I deeply admire for her resilience, intelligence, and pragmatic
approach to governance. Merkel led Germany through numerous challenges, including the global financial crisis and the European migrant crisis, with a calm and steady hand. Her ability to navigate complex political landscapes and make tough decisions while maintaining a high level of integrity and respect is truly commendable. Merkel’s leadership style, characterized by her analytical thinking and consensus-

building, has set a powerful example for women in leadership roles worldwide.
Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, is another female leader who inspires me. As the first woman, first Black woman, and first South Asian woman to hold the office, she has broken significant barriers and paved the way for future generations. Harris’s career, marked by her dedication to justice, equity, and public service, demonstrates her commitment to making a positive impact on society. Her resilience, determination, and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds make her a compelling and influential leader.
Both Angela Merkel and Kamala Harris have shown that strong, effective leadership can come from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Their contributions to their respective fields and their ability to inspire and lead with empathy and strength are qualities that I strive to emulate in my own career.
What is next for you? How do you forecast the future of Acibadem partnership with Albania?
Absolutely, work is indeed my key point. Through my dedication and hard work, I have been able to achieve significant milestones in my career. Beyond my role at Acibadem, I also serve as an advisor to the
Albanian President on health sector matters. Additionally, I am part of the Diplomatic Council and actively involved with the UN and UNICEF projects. This extensive involvement in various capacities has further solidified my commitment to the health sector and its administrative facets.
At Acibadem, we are continuously striving to expand our impact and improve healthcare standards. In April, we signed an agreement between Acibadem University and the University of Medicine in Tirana. This partnership aims to enhance healthcare, train doctors, and bring a new era of medical excellence from Turkey and beyond to Albania. Our goal is to provide advanced training and foster collaboration that will benefit both healthcare professionals and patients.
We are also exploring the possibility of building an Acibadem Hospital in Albania. This initiative is driven by our desire to be more accessible to Albanian and Balkan patients, ensuring they receive top-tier medical care closer to home. By establishing a presence in Albania, we aim to contribute significantly to the local healthcare landscape, offering highquality medical services and leveraging our expertise to improve patient outcomes.
These endeavors reflect our commitment to making a tangible difference in the healthcare sector, both locally and regionally. We believe that through collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, we can create a better healthcare environment for all.
Kristina Milin, Principal/Head of Hospitality Advisory at Horwath HTL Croatia, is in love with what she does best: hospitality consultancy.
“It all started in 2012 when I was hired as a project assistant for a project on which KPMG Rome worked in cooperation with Horwath HTL Croatia,” she told TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE/THE WOMEN EDITION. It was this occasion that gave her the possibility to learn so much about hospitality consultancy.
She says that Horwath remains the foundation of her career while she gained so much knowledge out of her cooperation with the biggest players in the hotel industry in the region and world-wide such as international hotel companies, funds, financial institutions, the world’s most famous architects, urban planners, developers and others.
Talking about the importance of family, Kristina says that “Family is the most
important leverage of the success.”
Full interview follows:
When and where did it all begin for you?
It all started in 2012 when I was hired as a project assistant for a project on which KPMG Rome worked in cooperation with Horwath HTL Croatia. On that project I had the opportunity to see firsthand what hospitality consultancy encompasses, how broad and yet niche the field of activity is, and what knowledge you can acquire by working on just one project.
What does your profession mean to you? How important has been Howarth for your career?
Horwath certainly holds the higher importance for the development of my career to the current level, considering that I have built almost my entire career in this company. However, what also greatly contributed to my professional development was working with the biggest players in the hotel industry in the

region and world-wide, international hotel companies, funds, financial institutions, the world’s most famous architects, urban planners, developers... In interaction with them, I gained very valuable knowledge that I could apply to my daily tasks and projects on which Horwath is working.
What have been some of the most successful projects in the field of hospitality you feel most proud of?
There are quite a few projects that I am especially proud of, including destination developments in Middle East, few quite large master plans in SEE region, best-use concepts which came to life like Grand hotel Park Rovinj, etc… Every project is different and exciting in its own way. But my favourite
In your view, are the women leading hospitality?
Unfortunately, not. I notice that we are really a minority and that high-profile positions are held by men in almost 80% of cases. I hope that this will change, and that this unfavourable ratio will improve in favour of women.
As a leader in your business, how do you set the tone for the team?
Tourism consultancy is niche consultancy, and you spend years of pouring the special set of knowledge and know-how to your team members and you don’t want to lose them after couple of years. So, to keep them interested and satisfied with their

types of projects are strategic investment plans for hotel companies and strategic advisories.
How do you handle the pressure of professional and family commitments? How important is family in your success? Family is the most important leverage of the success. If you don’t have supportive and understanding family, it is very hard to keep up with this type of job. Of course, with years and experience it is easier to handle the pressure, tight schedules, and deadlines but work-life balance is the most important factor in long-term consultancy. And I can say that I accomplished that.
position within the team, I try to distribute tasks according to the affinities of the team members, maintain high team spirit and a good atmosphere as much as possible. I also make sure that my team members have an adequate work-life balance, which is something that the whole consultancy industry is struggling.
Recently I was promoted to Principal position in Horwath, and it is, sort to say, a crown of my up-to-date consultancy career with completely new challenges on the horizon which I am very looking forward to.

With a solid background in the hospitality industry, Toptani has a set of principles
which she follows and we invite you to find them out while reading this interesting interview. “Do not seek environments where you are …”
Full interview below:
Hi Sonila, thanks for your time to give this interview to TRAILBLAZINGMAGAZINE/ The Women Edition. In the first place, can you give us an insight into the life of a Sales & Marketing Director for the newest Hotel in the city - Tirana Marriott Hotel?
Firstly, thank you for your invitation, it is such a pleasure to be interviewed by you.
I want to start by highlighting that the life of a hotelier and in particular the Sales & Marketing Director is very dynamic, no two days are the same! That is what I have loved the most since the beginning and what drives me on a daily basis at my work. The energetic, colorful, passionate environment at Tirana Marriott is inspiring and motivating
to continue growing and be excited for what the future beholds. Establishing a positive and healthy work environment is instrumental as the role of the Sales & Marketing Director is pivotal in shaping the narrative of the hotel. We are much more than just selling rooms at Tirana Marriott, we are selling experiences, evoking emotions and building lasting partnerships.
You’ve been with Marriott for three years now, what is the achievement you are most proud of since joining?
I joined Tirana Marriott in November 2021 during the pre-opening phase, which is the most intricate period and where the foundations of the vision that the company will embark are outlined. Our hotel has experienced a remarkable year in 2023, with immense spillover effect in 2024 which has ultimately positioned us as a leader in the hospitality industry in Albania. Though the forward-thinking strategies adapted from our HQ we have fostered strong relations in the industry, spearheaded a transformative journey not only in our performance but also in enhancing our brand strength and guest satisfaction.
All of these achievements are rooted in one of the golden principles of our company “Putting People First”. To translate this into the words of our own esteemed founder Mr. J. Willard Marriott “by taking care of the associated, they will take care of the customers”; meaning, that our most important assets are our people. And this, I would say is my biggest achievement at Tirana Marriott, building a team of highly spirited, motivated, ambitious, goal oriented young ladies that take upon themselves any challenge with a big smile on their face. Working with a unified team that goes above and beyond to ensure a seamless experience for our guests has been a true blessing.
“Marriott International has a portfolio of 33 brands and as tourism and business is successfully emerging so will the projects to continue bringing our esteemed brands in Tirana and coastline.”
You have such a solid background in the hospitality industry; Rogner, Sheraton/ Marriott, Marriott/Marriott Hotels, what do you see as the biggest challenge facing the hospitality industry from a sales & marketing perspective then and now?
Albania is one of the fastest recovering countries post pandemic in terms of tourism. The number of tourists visiting Albania is growing exponentially each year and there is a shift in the trend and pattern of travels. In my earlier years in this industry, Tirana was not an influential destination; however, as of recent years our beautiful capital is attracting adventurous passionate travelers. However, to welcome and offer unparalleled services and most importantly to incentivize these tourists
to return is our biggest challenge year to date. Infrastructure remains a constant challenge, the fast pace development of tourism worldwide and last but not least human resources. This industry is a people business and regardless of the advances
of technology what makes the difference is the human touch and how we make people feel.
Globalism has merged boarders with a positive overall impact; however, it is highly
important to preserve culture, celebrate traditions and historic attractions. This will continue to set our destination apart and generate interest from tourists. These challenges are surpassed with the penetration of international brands in our
market, bringing invaluable expertise and knowhow in training people to become experts in the hospitality industry.
How has Tirana Marriott Hotel developed since joining it? How do you see its future? Are changes looming on the horizon?
Tirana Marriott welcomed their first guests in March 2023! Since then, we have had the pleasure to become a distinguished hotel in Tirana and in in our region, categorized as one of the most Premium hotels. Marriott International’s focus is in our region and there are wonderful developments on our way. The hotel chain is expanding in Albania, with the upcoming construction of Marriott Hotel & Apartments at Vlora Marina. Marriott International has a portfolio of 33 brands and as tourism and business is successfully emerging so will the projects to continue bringing our esteemed brands in Tirana and coastline.
When it comes to your networking as a key pillar in your job, can you share some hints and tips?
Love what you do and everything will come your way!
Working in the hospitality industry is not a 9 – 5 job, it requires commitment and dedication to create and most importantly maintain relationships. Networking in the right way can enhance professional opportunities and personal growth.
It is imperial to have general professional information for the people you are networking with, conducting research in advance and connecting to these people on a personal sense, emotional connection to what you do will guarantee success. Do not seek environments where you are the smartest person in the room, challenge yourself outside your comfort zone, go to events, introduce yourself and always remember to listen more than you talk.
Above all
Rajmonda Hasmeta works as an HR Generalist and is responsible for HR at Voltalia Albanie, part of Voltalia Companies (www.voltalia.com), an international energy producer company, founded in France in 2005, specialized in renewable energy solutions that help its clients join the global energy and ecological transition movement.
Rajmonda’s role also includes acting as a Grievance Mechanism Manager and overseeing Audit Control for Voltalia Albanie’s subcontractors.
Rajmonda shares her professional journey with TRAILBLAZING MAGAZINE/The Women Edition stressing that she made it despite the challenges and prejudices she had to face on the way because of having to live in a city with a different pace and mentality.
“My story starts in the small town of Burrel. When I was five, my family moved to the outskirts of Tirana due to my father’s job promotion. This transition was not just a physical move but a shift into a completely different societal framework,” she says.
All for her started when she enrolled in a reputable school in Tirana when all expected her to go in a neighbourhood school. “This decision marked one of the first major turning points in my life, setting a precedent
for overcoming barriers and pursuing excellence,” Hasmeta says.
She has worked in the BALFIN Group and later at Voltalia which were for her instrumental in expanding her understanding of global business practices. Working for Voltalia, according to her, has profoundly transformed her perspective as an HR professional in the renewable energy industry, a sector both new to Albania and to my career experience. “This role has not only expanded my expertise in managing complex HR challenges but also in fostering a culture that prioritizes sustainability and innovation,” she said.
Full interview follows:
What is your story made of?
My story starts in the small town of Burrel, where values were instilled in me from a young age. I was surrounded by a family that prized integrity, loyalty, hard work, and education above all. My father, a dedicated commander in the army, and my mother, who devoted herself to our family after retiring early, were my first examples of leadership and sacrifice.
When I was five, my family moved to the outskirts of Tirana due to my father’s job promotion. This transition was not just a physical move but a shift into a completely different societal framework.
“If for anything I am blessed in life, it is because I have the greatest blessing of being part of a big family: 5 women and 2 men. In both my personal life and professional journey, my role models and pillars of support have undeniably been the incredible women in my family: my mother and sisters.”
The challenges of adapting to this new environment were compounded by the pressures of fitting into a city with a different pace and mentality. My mother’s relentless emphasis on education as the gateway to opportunities led me to attend one of the most reputable schools in the city center, despite expectations for me to enrol in the neighbourhood school. This decision marked one of the first major turning points in my life, setting a precedent for overcoming barriers and pursuing excellence.
Throughout my youth, my strong and energetic character helped me navigate the challenges of being perceived as an outsider due to my origins and residence on the city’s periphery. This environment, though full of challenges, also fuelled my ambition by setting a benchmark for what I aspired to surpass. High school continued in a similar vein, where I often found myself in debates with teachers, defending my perspectives and securing
my place within the academic community. University brought significant change and opportunities, offering the flexibility to engage in various extracurricular activities alongside my studies. I embraced internships, youth exchanges, and training programs, which broadened my horizons and deepened my experiences.
As I transitioned into more significant roles, each position challenged me to adapt and innovate. My first experience at the Municipality of Tirana was particularly impactful, which honed my organizational and communication skills. This experience laid a strong foundation for my future roles. After this important experience, my tenure at the BALFIN Group and later at Voltalia were instrumental in expanding my understanding of global business practices and the critical role of sustainable development in corporate strategies. These roles not only allowed me to contribute to the organizations’ goals but also to mould
the work culture, influencing how corporate standards are implemented and perceived.
Today, my story continues to evolve. It is a narrative of breaking moulds, challenging the status quo, and continuously striving for personal and professional growth. My journey is characterized by a relentless pursuit of opportunities to learn and expand my horizons, ensuring that my contributions have a lasting impact on the industry and the communities I serve.
“Today, my story continues to evolve. It is a narrative of breaking moulds, challenging the status quo, and continuously striving for personal and professional growth.”
and fairness, which are crucial for building trust and reinforcing a positive workplace culture. Through this, I’ve learned the importance of swift and thoughtful responses to employee concerns, which is essential in creating an inclusive and supportive work environment.
As a HR Responsible and acting as a Grievance Mechanism Manager and Audit Control, how has this combination influenced your career all in all?
Working for Voltalia has profoundly transformed my perspective as an HR professional in the renewable energy industry, a sector both new to Albania and to my career experience. This role has not only expanded my expertise in managing complex HR challenges but also in fostering a culture that prioritizes sustainability and innovation.
A significant aspect of my work involves overseeing our subcontractors to ensure they meet the stringent standards set by our company and by international bodies like the IFC (International Finance CorporationWorld Bank Group) and the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstructions and Development).
Moreover, my role as a grievance mechanism manager has allowed me to refine my skills in conflict resolution and employee advocacy. Handling grievances requires empathy, effective communication,
Overall, my position at Voltalia has enabled me to push the boundaries of traditional HR roles, expanding my horizons and allowing me to contribute significantly to the professional development of our team and the broader industry. It has been an invaluable journey of raising awareness about the importance of high work standards and their ripple effects across the workforce.
What challenges were you facing in the very beginning of your career and what are they now? What learning have you gained out of them?
At the outset of my career, the transition from an academic environment to the professional world was marked by several challenges. Despite excelling academically, the practical skills required for effective job hunting were daunting. Crafting a compelling CV, writing persuasive motivation letters, and building a professional network from scratch were my initial hurdles. The job market demanded not only qualifications but also experience, which I found paradoxical as a recent graduate seeking my first real opportunity.
Today, as a seasoned HR professional, the challenges I face have evolved significantly. The global business landscape is rapidly
changing, influenced by technological advancements and a shift towards a more diverse and inclusive workforce. My current role requires me to stay updated with these changes, adapt HR strategies accordingly, and ensure our practices align with global standards. This involves a continuous learning process where I must understand new HR technologies, maintain cultural sensitivity in a diverse workplace, and foster an environment that supports work-life balance and employee well-being.
The most significant learning from my career trajectory is the value of adaptability and lifelong learning. Early on, I learned the importance of resourcefulness—using every available tool to enhance my employability. Now, I focus on being a proactive learner, staying ahead of industry trends, and applying this knowledge to make informed decisions. This adaptability has not only been crucial for my professional development but has also enabled me to contribute effectively to the organizations I have worked with.
How would you describe the workplace culture of today and how it has changed in your view?
The workplace culture in Albania today exhibits a fascinating dichotomy between small and large companies. In many small companies, traditional practices prevail, characterized by rigid hierarchies and a lack of employee-centric policies. These companies often struggle with basic compliance issues such as timely salary payments and providing necessary insurance, reflecting a broader reluctance to adopt more progressive workplace practices.
In contrast, larger companies are increasingly adopting modern, inclusive
practices. These organizations are not only improving standards but are also fostering cultures of innovation and collaboration. They emphasize employee empowerment, professional development, and transparency in communication, which are critical for a motivated workforce.
Over the years, there has been a significant cultural shift towards recognizing the importance of employee well-being and professional growth. Progressive companies understand that a supportive environment is not just about adherence to standards but about creating a workplace where employees can thrive. This shift is not just about improving individual companies but about raising the bar for the entire industry in Albania.
How inspiring is your current work at Voltalia?
Voltalia stands out as a beacon of innovation and ethical practices in the renewable energy sector. The company’s commitment to sustainability and local development resonates deeply with my personal and professional values. Working here is inspiring because every project
and initiative has the potential to make a significant impact on the environment and communities around the globe.

In your opinion, what are some of the major changes that are affecting HR in the last few years?
The HR landscape has been profoundly affected by globalization, which has
introduced a need for policies that accommodate a diverse and geographically dispersed workforce. Additionally, technological advancements have revolutionized HR practices, from automated onboarding processes to sophisticated data analytics for talent management.
Emigration has significantly impacted HR. This trend has posed challenges for HR in retaining top talent and filling skill gaps. In response, companies are enhancing their employment offers and workplace conditions to retain their workforce and attract returnees, including competitive salaries, career development opportunities, and improved workplace environments.
There is a growing recognition of the importance of mental and physical wellbeing in the workplace. Progressive HR policies now address these aspects through comprehensive wellness programs and initiatives aimed at fostering a supportive work environment.
The shift towards remote work, especially prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic, has required HR departments to rethink engagement and productivity strategies. This adaptation has led to more flexible work arrangements and a greater focus on maintaining connectivity and collaboration among remote teams.
Finally, there is an increasing integration of sustainability and social responsibility into HR practices. Companies are now expected to be not only economically viable but also environmentally and socially responsible. HR is uniquely positioned to lead these efforts through strategic planning and policy development, ensuring that corporate practices align with broader social and environmental goals.
What is your role model and major support in life and work? And do you have a message for him/her?
Your question makes me think of an article I started to write on 8th March, but I never published. It was in honour of the International Women’s Day.
If for anything I am blessed in life, it is because I have the greatest blessing of being part of a big family: 5 women and 2 men. In both my personal life and professional journey, my role models and pillars of support have undeniably been the incredible women in my family: my mother and sisters. Their unwavering strength, determination, and boundless love have guided me through life’s challenges and propelled me forward in my pursuits.
From my earliest memories, I’ve witnessed my mother’s relentless dedication to nurturing and empowering her children, selflessly sacrificing her own desires for our well-being. She embodies the epitome of resilience and courage, overcoming obstacles with a lioness-like ferocity that leaves an indelible mark on my heart. Similarly, my sisters, with their unwavering support and exemplary resilience, have been beacons of inspiration in my life. Their achievements and unwavering solidarity have instilled in me a profound sense of determination and ambition.
To these extraordinary women, I extend my deepest gratitude and admiration. Their guidance, sacrifices, and unwavering belief in me have shaped me into the person I am today. They are not just my role models, but my heroes.
“It’s true that while forging your own path is essential, the true key to success lies in the support you receive along the way.! The biggest support in my life has been them (not to forget my father and brother, of course that are my blessings :), but since as I mention that it comes to my mind now the article that I wanted to write, but I haven’t published.
I thank them for being the driving force behind my successes and for teaching me the invaluable lesson that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible. Their legacy of strength, love, and resilience will forever guide me on my journey. I am eternally grateful for their presence in my life.

From 2013 and on, Annalisa saw herself growing from one year to the other due to the projects she was involved.
“I am ready to move forward in this fantastic adventure made of art and training and meeting sugar art artists from all over the world,” she states.
Annalisa is the organizer of the Puglia Cake Festival for eight editions and also the head of the Apulia Food & Cake Travel Association. “I would like to go beyond the Italian borders and
The works in the photos are made by the many sugar art artists who have participated in various competitions.
I would like to start from Albania, a state where modern history has seen us linked to tragic events alas, where we Italians were only spectators and the Albanians were protagonists in search of FREEDOM,” she adds.
Full interview below:
What is the story of your passion for cake design and baking? Have you inherited or developed it over the years?
I’m Annalisa Stillavato from Italy. The kitchen has always been the place where I took refuge in my free time, preparing cakes for my loved ones and leafing through the various pastry magazines, I think I followed the culinary instinct of my grandmother and my paternal aunt. I never thought about being a pastry chef, because in the 80s it was almost exclusively a man’s job. I did studies that did not touch pastry. Life immersed me in the world of commerce, until in a moment of work break, after the birth of my second daughter in 2010, I entered the world of pastry with more professional eyes and a few years later, precisely in 2013 I made my first cake in sugar art and it was immediately love!
How did you immerse yourself in the world of cake and sugar art?
In dessert and in life I love to take care of details and that’s why in 2013 I got to know the world of cake design... I was passionate about everything that revolved around this world, with a pinch of practice that slowly gave its results. I love to get excited, communicate my passion to everyone and why not... my knowledge about cake designs as well, which I consider a real art. The greatest emotion about
cake designs was on October 4, 2015 at the Hobby Show/Expo - Milan when, together with 300 professionals, pastry chefs and cake designers, we created the largest cake in the world officially entering the Guinness World Record. COMMUNICATING is a real passion for me... in all its forms. My journey as a cake designer has just begun... I hope to AMAZE you more and more!
In 2016, I started to hold the position of delegate of the capital of Bari of the FIAB Federazione Italina Arte Bianca, a role
that gave me an identity in the cake design sector. To me, 2016 saw a constant evolution in cake design, bringing it to the second edition of TOC TOC chi c’è’ on TV and produced by the CITTÀ DELL’INFANZIA association and created by Serena Gisotti. After a pilot edition in 2015, the project shone out with more professionalism and emotions. I am ready to move forward in this fantastic adventure made of art and training and meeting sugar art artists from all over the world.
Can you tell us more about the Puglia Food & Cake Travel Association and the training courses it organizes in the field of cake design and pastry?
THE ASSOCIATION APULIA FOOD & CAKE TRAVEL (www.pugliacakefestival.it/statutoe-modulo-adesione.html) ( www.facebook. com/APULIAFOODCAKETRAVEL ) was born in 2023 to carry on the mission that began with the Puglia Cake Festival event, now in
its 8th edition, which is to raise awareness of the art of sugar through competitions and offer its members advanced training with international professionals. The event is organized by the association, which involves its members in various training projects, entering hotel training schools with its trainers and communicating through courses and companies in the sector everything that revolves around this related sector: techniques, materials, events and skills.
What is your plan to organize training courses in Albania and the other Balkan countries?
My experience, first of all as organizer of the Puglia Cake Festival for eight editions, has led me to be a judge of cakes decorated in sugar art in various events in the sector but also at the helm of the Apulia Food & Cake Travel association. I would like to go beyond the Italian borders and I would like to start
from Albania, a state where modern history has seen us linked to tragic events alas, where we Italians were only spectators and the Albanians were protagonists in search of FREEDOM. I believe that art is one of the most expressive forms of freedom and I would like to make an exhibition of sugar art or bring the training there in Albania. I am sure it will be an added value as it has been for Italy which has inherited this art from the United States, in the past years. We are creators of dreams, we have already made some of our members’ dreams come true, bringing them to the podium of a PUGLIA CAKE FESTIVAL event. When you believe in a dream, nothing becomes impossible!
The APULIA FOOD & CAKE TRAVEL association pursues the goal of making cake design training more and more inclusive. Approach; Professionals, enthusiasts and students with a creative flair but who also aim for a role in the world of work.
“I believe that art is one of the most expressive forms of freedom and I would like to make an exhibition of sugar art or bring the training there in Albania. I am sure it will be an added value as it has been for Italy which has inherited this art from the United States, in the past years.”
We are not new to this type of training approach, as in the case of organizing an event dedicated to cake design. Through PUGLIA CAKE FESTIVAL, now in its 8th edition, and now international, we live a 360° experience.
What is your invitation to all cake design lovers for the 8th edition of the Puglia Cake Festival to be held on 12/13 October 2024?
The 8th edition of the Puglia Cake Festival 12/13 October is an event dedicated mainly to cake design but with a pinch of pastry, in a historic building in the city of Trani. You
will be surrounded by landscape art but also by over 100 works in sugar art, which will compete against each other, stands of the sector for shopping, a showcooking area dedicated to pastry, live demonstrations of cake design and advanced cake design training courses with artists from all over the world.

(a pearl of Puglia)
In your industry, doing something unique or different to stand out is really important. How do you think you did all this and do you have any advice for people who want to do the same?
For me, it is really important to set new goals, and pursue them with courage and a lot of patience, only in this way can you work with the right adrenaline that makes the impossible... POSSIBLE. The fundamental thing for me is to believe in it, no goal is easy to achieve but if you surround yourself with people who have the same vision as you, everything becomes easier; teamwork is the secret of success. It’s also crucial to act with
honesty, and it will never disappoint those who believe in you.
It was not easy to make the Puglia Cake Festival a successful event but I have to thank those who have supported me in this adventure in these long and tiring years of organization - Serena Gisotti journalist and vice-president of an association (online newspaper), who has supported me since the first edition, my collaborators and partners Cinzia Santoro and Anna Giudice who have been precious help during the festival and last but not least the artist Catia Guida and Serena Gisotti, who helped me during the last editions in the coordination of competitions and masterclasses.
How do you find yourself among the men who know how to make sugary masterpieces?
Despite my experience in this field, when I am confronted with these works of art I am always amazed. Because, in the recent years, the sugar art artist does not set limits and from his/her hands come masterpieces that really touch the human soul. I would also like to tug at the heartstrings of the Albanian people.

PRESENTS ITS SPRING/ SUMMER 2024 COLLECTION INSPIRED BY THE COLOURS OF RAJASTHAN
Twinset Milano's Spring-Summer 2024 collection is inspired by the magic of India’s Rajasthan, with its vibrant colours, desert dunes and fragrant spice markets. The Twinset woman embarks on a complete sensory journey, in which what she wears contributes to the magical narrative: from long jersey dresses that softly envelop the body, to head-to-toe looks consisting of lightweight jackets and crocheted shorts. Golden lurex is the star of the show in slip dresses paired with exotic maxi cardigans.
The prints are reminiscent of Indian landscapes: from floral patterns embroidered on linen, also adorning the buttons of jackets and shirts, to animal prints for a bold twist, creating a synergy between fashion and nature. The collection’s bohemian soul is further confirmed by the use of iconic fringes and feathers, enriching each garment with a touch of lightness and softness. Once again, all-Italian knitwear – the brand’s true hallmark – plays a central role, particularly with a striped sailorinspired motif in shades of blue and white, as a reference to the world of sailing and navigation.
The accessories focus on colour, with pastel shades characterising mini leather handbags, the season's must-have, and spacious everyday tote bags. Slingbacks
and pumps star in the footwear collection, paired with sophisticated everyday looks to add character and underscore the wearer’s femininity. Timeless sneakers come in a wide range of options, embellished by striking elements such as raised soles, engraved logos and appliqué detailing.
For the Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Twinset is proud to announce the début of a sustainable project developed alongside Giglio Tigrato by Carlotta Orlando. This capsule collection, based on the values of sustainability and fabric reuse, consists of a series of t-shirts in recycled cotton with prints made exclusively from vegan ink. The aim of the collaboration is to join forces and create high-quality garments that respect the environment and promote conscious fashion.
