Round the Bays 9 March The 8.4km flat course follows the contours of Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. It starts in the city at 9.30am on Quay St and finishes on the waterfront at St Heliers Bay. Round the Bays has been an annual event in Auckland since 1972, initiated by the Auckland Joggers Club. charming seaside village of Devonport (buy a return ticket, the journey lasts 12 minutes and departs every half hour). As you approach Devonport, look out to the twin hills, these are Mt Victoria and North Head. If you were to spend a day here, you could climb them and explore the First World War bunkers hidden in the hills. Have a coffee at Manuka, then browse the wares of the boutique shops. Soak up the colourful atmosphere of the vibrant Pasifika Festival from 8–9 March, which is the largest celebration of Pacific Island culture and heritage in the world. Enjoy browsing the markets and on-stage performances, taste the authentic island flavours, experience traditional crafts such as weaving, tattooing and carving, and learn the unique customs and stories of the Pacific Islands. On Saturday 8 March, Western Springs Park will be transformed into 11 Pacific Island villages showcasing the song, dance, food and craft of their Pacific Island nations in a high energy atmosphere. Sunday will start with a combined church service and have a more laid back feel, reflecting the day of faith and family that is celebrated throughout our Pacific Island communities. For the first time in the festival’s 22 year history, Hawaii will be welcomed as a new member of the Pasifika family, alongside the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Tokelau, Tuvalu and Aoteoroa.

Driving in NZ The official New Zealand Road Code guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. Road Rules New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving • Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as ﬁnes can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. • Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200– 300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. • Ringing bells and ﬂashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care especially at crossings not controlled by barrier arms.

Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the wineries. Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches. If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a coffee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm. Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours, but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there’s over 250km of walking trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park conservation project.

Head further west for a bracing stroll on the black sand beaches of Karekare or Piha, their dark colour a product of high volumes of volcanic iron rich sand. The Kitekite Falls trail can also be accessed from Piha, or enjoy the views after climbing half-way up imposing Lion Rock (walk down to the waters edge to see the Lion). Venture further aﬁeld and you can hit the waves with Muriwai surf school, or for some fun with the kids slide down the massive sand dunes at Lake Wainamu at Bethells – don’t miss the delicious kumara chips at the Bethells Beach Café.

Walk through ancient forests, look out for towering Kauri trees and listen for the sounds of native birds such as bellbird, tui and woodpigeon.

Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf Islands are just moments from the city but feel like a world away. Enjoy a bushwalk, listen for native birds and explore the sandy beaches which are all right on the city’s doorstep. Waiheke Island is a day-trippers’ dream and a fantastic place to take a retreat from city life. It takes just half an hour to get to Waiheke and you’ll soon ease into the easy-going island lifestyle. There is a vibrant arts and crafts scene and many vineyards dotted around the island, so make sure you sample some of the local drops. Fullers and SeaLink Ferries run a regular service to Waiheke. Rangitoto Island is one of Auckland’s most iconic landmarks. Its 600 year-old volcanic cone is clearly visible from many parts of the city and you’ll be rewarded with 360 degree views if you hike to the summit (259 metres high). For those who prefer a more leisurely stroll, try the easier tracks which skirt the coastline. Don’t forget your lunch as there aren’t any shops on Rangitoto. Fullers Ferries operate to Rangitoto.

Unwanted predators have been eradicated, and more than 300,000 native trees planted, to make Tiritiri an open bird sanctuary for threatened native species including the saddleback, stitchbird, takahe and kokako. 360 Discovery run a ferry service from Auckland and Gulf Harbour.

At Kawau Island, tour Mansion House, the stately residence of New Zealand’s former Governor, Sir George Grey. This scenic island has a range of walking tracks leading to Maori Pa sites and the ruins of old copper mines. Access to Kawau is by boat. Catch a ferry or water taxi from Sandspit, near Warkworth, 64km north of Auckland. A little further away, Great Barrier Island is rugged and remote and has beautiful surf beaches, lush native bush, plus fantastic hiking and birdlife. The island is home to the historic remains of copper and silver mines, shipwrecks, a whaling station, timber mills and kauri dams. Great Barrier Island can be accessed by the SeaLink Ferry or there are regular ﬂights.

Highlights • For something a bit different try some target practice and clay pigeon shooting at Wild on Waiheke. • Fullers Island Explorer tour buses meet the ferry from Waiheke and offer sightseeing tours, which include unlimited bus travel for the rest of the day.

• Explore the lava caves which are unique to Rangitoto Island.

Auckland International Airport

The Auckland International and Domestic Airport lies about 21km south-west of the Auckland CBD at the edge of the Manukau Harbour in Mangere. Airport Transport Travel options to and from Auckland Airport (phone 275 0789) include taxi, shuttle bus and The Airbus, as well as rental vehicles (see page 67 which may be picked up/dropped off at the airport or nearby. From central Auckland, taxis take about 30 minutes (allow an hour at peak times) and cost from $50-$65. Shuttle buses cost less (about $30 per person but less for a group) and take longer, as they pick up and drop off en route. The Airbus (freephone 0800 10 30 80, www.airbus.co.nz) runs every 15 minutes throughout the day, stopping close to most major hotels and backpackers. An adult fare costs $16 one way and $28 return. Inter-terminal Bus A free inter-terminal bus connects the international and domestic terminals. The bus departs every 20 minutes from outside the arrivals hall.

Driving To/From Auckland Airport From the Airport Take the main exit road (George Bolt Memorial Drive) to the intersection with SH20. Follow the signs for Auckland City which will take you onto the motorway. Leave the motorway, turn right into Queenstown Road and continue straight ahead through the roundabout into Pah Road, which becomes Manukau Road. Continue up Manukau Road, turn left at the traffic lights into Alpers Avenue. At the end of Alpers Avenue, turn right into Gillies Avenue and join the motorway to the city, northern and western suburbs. The last exit to the city is Nelson Street (the left-hand lane).

To the Airport

On the southern motorway, take the Gillies Avenue exit. Turn right into Gillies Avenue then left at the lights into Owens Road. At the end of the road, turn right into Manukau Road (SH12) and follow the route to the airport, signposted with a white aeroplane on a blue square.
