You’ve arrived in one of the world’s most liveable cities, but you only have 24 hours, or less, to visit? Auckland’s vibrant city style and marine playground has so much to offer, so where should you start? Never fear, here’s our recommendations of what’s good to see and do in and around Auckland for the short time you’re here.
Morning There’s no better way to start 8.30 am your stay in the City of Sails

charming seaside village of Devonport (buy a return ticket, the journey lasts 12 minutes and departs every half hour). As you approach Devonport, look out to the twin hills, these are Mt Victoria and North Head. If you were to spend a day here, you could climb them and explore the First World War bunkers hidden in the hills. Have a coffee at Manuka, then browse the wares of the boutique shops. Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many options available and take the time to spend on yourself. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatments available; enjoy a relaxing facial or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic full body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland’s solariums, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliation. If you find yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a pampering in the comfort of your own room. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.
Relax and enjoy a blissful hot stone massage, an aromatic full body polish or body wrap.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/auckland/accommodation.

Driving in NZ The official New Zealand Road Code guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. Road Rules New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
Tips for Safe Driving • Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. • Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200– 300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. • Ringing bells and flashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care especially at crossings not controlled by barrier arms.

Not only does Auckland boast 55 extinct volcanoes, with hill-like craters scattered around the city, it is also home to more than 85,000 boats, earning its title ‘City of Sails’. Get your bearings and your adrenalin pumping in the central city by leaping off the Sky Tower, or test your vertigo by walking round its outside ledge at just 1.2m wide. Browse Auckland Art Gallery’s extensive collection of more than 15,000 artworks. Alternatively, take a stroll to the city’s Domain and find out more about New Zealand’s history and its people at Auckland’s War Memorial Museum. Auckland’s central waterfront has extended as a place to meet, do business and relax. The popular Viaduct area used to be the only place to be seen, now there are numerous waterfront locations to wine and dine. From the Britomart precinct to Wynyard Quarter, you’ll find affordable, tasty fare and spectacular sea views. Mission Bay is a short, picturesque drive (or bus ride) from the city along Auckland’s stunning waterfront. Stroll along its long golden beach then grab an ice-cream or fish and chips to refuel. Parnell’s colonial-style shops specialise in locally made crafts, ranging from designer jewellery, pounamu (New Zealand Jade) and clothing to paintings, glass-work and sculpture. If that’s not enough to satisfy your shopping fix, head to the neighbouring suburb of Newmarket and explore its designer fashion stores.

Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the wineries. Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches. If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a coffee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm. Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours, but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there’s over 250km of walking trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park conservation project.
Piha ©Tourism Auckland
Head further west for a bracing stroll on the black sand beaches of Karekare or Piha, their dark colour a product of high volumes of volcanic iron rich sand. The Kitekite Falls trail can also be accessed from Piha, or enjoy the views after climbing half-way up imposing Lion Rock (walk down to the waters edge to see the Lion). Venture further afield and you can hit the waves with Muriwai surf school, or for some fun with the kids slide down the massive sand dunes at Lake Wainamu at Bethells – don’t miss the delicious kumara chips at the Bethells Beach Café.
Walk through ancient forests, look out for towering Kauri trees and listen for the sounds of native birds such as bellbird, tui and woodpigeon.
