Auckland at a Glance

Welcome to Auckland – the City of Sails. The beautiful Waitemata and Manukau Harbours, together with the scenic Hauraki Gulf Islands, provide a spectacular backdrop to cosmopolitan Auckland. Make the most of your stay in New Zealand’s largest city by keeping your Auckland What’s On close at hand. It contains information on all the latest events, as well as easy-to-use maps, great ideas for sightseeing and activities, and useful information to help with all your accommodation, shopping, dining and transport needs.

Auckland at a Glance Auckland City Find your bearings and enjoy the amazing view from the top of the Sky Tower, then head to High Street for its chic café culture and boutique shopping. Brush up on our fascinating history at Auckland’s War Memorial Museum, or take a drive along the waterfront toward Mission Bay. If you have an afternoon to spare then take in Kelly Tarton’s Sealife Aquarium enroute, before tucking in to some delicious fish and chips on the beach. West Auckland Enjoy a short walk or a full day hike in the lush Waitakere Ranges or take a refreshing stroll on one of Auckland’s rugged west coast beaches. Linger over a glass of wine with lunch at one of the numerous wineries.

North Shore Quaint Devonport, with its antique stores and icecream bars, is a short ferry ride across the harbour and perfect for the kids, or head over the Harbour Bridge for high-end shopping at Takapuna. Venture further north to Warkworth’s lovely riverside cafés, or experience Matakana’s bustling Saturday market. South Auckland Experience Manukau’s vibrant Polynesian flavour at Otara Markets, or take on the exciting theme park rides at Rainbow’s End or the more sedate Auckland Botanic Gardens. Hauraki Gulf Islands The islands of Rangitoto and Waiheke are great options for day excursions. Ferries depart regularly from Quay Street Ferry terminal.

24 hours in Auckland

You’ve arrived in one of the world’s most liveable cities, but you only have 24 hours, or less, to visit? Auckland’s vibrant city style and marine playground has so much to offer, so where should you start? Never fear, here’s our recommendations of what’s good to see and do in and around Auckland for the short time you’re here.

Morning There’s no better way to start 8.30 am your stay in the City of Sails

than heading out on the water. Take a Fullers Ferry to the

charming seaside village of Devonport (buy a return ticket, the journey lasts 12 minutes and departs every half hour). As you approach Devonport, look out to the twin hills, these are Mt Victoria and North Head. If you were to spend a day here, you could climb them and explore the First World War bunkers hidden in the hills. Have a coffee at Manuka, then browse the wares of the boutique shops. Phone 09 367 9111. www.fullers.co.nz

Take a leisurely ride by bike 10.30 around Auckland’s iconic am

waterfront with Adventure Capital, Auckland Bike Tours.

Visit top attractions and learn about the city with a knowledgeable, friendly guide. All routes are safe, gentle and fun. Self-guided tours are also available. Bike hire is available for just $15 for up to four hours, $20 for day rental or $30 for overnight rental. So use your pedal power and see the City of Sails at your pace on two wheels. Phone: 09 337 0633. www.adventurecapital.co.nz

Afternoon time to get a little bit out of 12.30 It’s your comfort zone, so what will

you do? Walk the edge of the Sky Tower, 182 metres above the hustle and bustle of Auckland city, and get a true 360 degree view with not even a handrail between you and the view? Or take a leap of adventure and jump off the edge? You can do both with SkyWalk and SkyJump packages. The friendly crew will make sure you have the time of your life, and provide photos so you can show what a daredevil you are. Afterwards, you can toast your courage and the views at the Sky Lounge. Auckland may be a marine playground, but it is also home to some significant heritage;

Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many options available and take the time to spend on yourself. Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatments available; enjoy a relaxing facial or invigorating massage, or why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak and a pedicure. For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic full body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering together. Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland’s solariums, or give yourself the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliation. If you find yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a pampering in the comfort of your own room. Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

Relax and enjoy a blissful hot stone massage, an aromatic full body polish or body wrap.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you. Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how an accommodation property has been independently rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the room – inspection should be welcome. Hotels generally offer tea/coffee making facilities, a bathroom and an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually offer self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fixed budget, try some of the backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities. The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To find out more, visit jasons.co.nz/auckland/accommodation.

Driving in NZ The official New Zealand Road Code guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations. Road Rules New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving • Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. • Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200– 300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. • Ringing bells and flashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care especially at crossings not controlled by barrier arms.

Not only does Auckland boast 55 extinct volcanoes, with hill-like craters scattered around the city, it is also home to more than 85,000 boats, earning its title ‘City of Sails’. Get your bearings and your adrenalin pumping in the central city by leaping off the Sky Tower, or test your vertigo by walking round its outside ledge at just 1.2m wide. Browse Auckland Art Gallery’s extensive collection of more than 15,000 artworks. Alternatively, take a stroll to the city’s Domain and find out more about New Zealand’s history and its people at Auckland’s War Memorial Museum. Auckland’s central waterfront has extended as a place to meet, do business and relax. The popular Viaduct area used to be the only place to be seen, now there are numerous waterfront locations to wine and dine. From the Britomart precinct to Wynyard Quarter, you’ll find affordable, tasty fare and spectacular sea views. Mission Bay is a short, picturesque drive (or bus ride) from the city along Auckland’s stunning waterfront. Stroll along its long golden beach then grab an ice-cream or fish and chips to refuel. Parnell’s colonial-style shops specialise in locally made crafts, ranging from designer jewellery, pounamu (New Zealand Jade) and clothing to paintings, glass-work and sculpture. If that’s not enough to satisfy your shopping fix, head to the neighbouring suburb of Newmarket and explore its designer fashion stores.

Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the wineries. Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches. If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a coffee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm. Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours, but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there’s over 250km of walking trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park conservation project.
