West Auckland Enjoy a short walk or a full day hike in the lush Waitakere Ranges or take a refreshing stroll on one of Auckland’s rugged west coast beaches. Linger over a glass of wine with lunch at one of the numerous wineries.

North Shore Quaint Devonport, with its antique stores and icecream bars, is a short ferry ride across the harbour and perfect for the kids, or head over the Harbour Bridge for high-end shopping at Takapuna. Venture further north to Warkworth’s lovely riverside cafés, or experience Matakana’s bustling Saturday market. South Auckland Experience Manukau’s vibrant Polynesian flavour at Otara Markets, or take on the exciting theme park rides at Rainbow’s End or the more sedate Auckland Botanic Gardens. Hauraki Gulf Islands The islands of Rangitoto and Waiheke are great options for day excursions. Ferries depart regularly from Quay Street Ferry terminal.

Never fear, here’s our recommendations of what’s good to see and do in and around Auckland for the short time you’re here.

There’s no better way to start 8.30 am your stay in the City of Sails

than heading out on the water. Take a Fullers Ferry to the

charming seaside village of Devonport (buy a return ticket, the journey lasts 12 minutes and departs every half hour). As you approach Devonport, look out to the twin hills, these are Mt Victoria and North Head. Supported by Auckland Council and the community, these events offer something for everyone: Santa parades, carol singing, Christmas lights, galas and more. In true Kiwi style, the emphasis is on being outdoors to eat, play and be merry. The happiest event on the Kiwi Christmas calendar – also the biggest outdoor extravaganza in this category – is the Coca -Cola Christmas in the Park (December 13 at Auckland Domain). The show has it all – bright lights, big stars, fireworks and Santa Claus – and it is free! Enjoy a magical evening under the stars with friends and family, performances by the country’s top entertainers and a fun night of carol singing.

Say hello to Auckland’s iconic and giant Santa at Queen St at the Whitcoull’s building corner. The 18-metre festive figure may have been called “creepy” by some, but has been a part of Auckland’s seasonal celebrations since 1960 and still much loved. You could be a Santa yourself for a day by running or walking the Great KidsCan Santa Run (December 3). Hosted in 18 venues around the country, four of which are in Auckland, this 2-3 kilometre fun run is a major fundraiser for KidsCan Charity. Santa suits are provided as part of the entry fee, although getting innovative in dressing is encouraged – having fun is a critical requirement of this race!

Head west and explore Waitakere’s lush native bush, enjoy a stroll on the wild black sand beaches or relax in one of the wineries. Shuttle services run daily from central Auckland to the West Coast beaches. If you have your own transport, make a pit-stop in Titirangi village for a coffee, and perhaps even catch the Titirangi Village Market (last Sunday of the month) at Titirangi War Memorial Hall from 10am until 2pm. Continue west along Scenic Drive to Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which covers more than 16,000 hectares of native rainforest and coastline. Packed with fascinating exhibits, the visitor centre alone could keep you entertained for hours, but if you’re keen to stretch your legs there’s over 250km of walking trails to choose from. Tracks start directly from the centre, with a wide range of others just a short drive away. Try Fair Falls track, or explore Cascade Kauri Park, located in the heart of the Ark in the Park conservation project.

Head further west for a bracing stroll on the black sand beaches of Karekare or Piha, their dark colour a product of high volumes of volcanic iron rich sand. The Kitekite Falls trail can also be accessed from Piha, or enjoy the views after climbing half-way up imposing Lion Rock (walk down to the waters edge to see the Lion). Venture further afield and you can hit the waves with Muriwai surf school, or for some fun with the kids slide down the massive sand dunes at Lake Wainamu at Bethells – don’t miss the delicious kumara chips at the Bethells Beach Café.

Walk through ancient forests, look out for towering Kauri trees and listen for the sounds of native birds such as bellbird, tui and woodpigeon.

Nature lovers will enjoy the Hunua Ranges National Park, which is the largest native forest in the Auckland region. Northeast of Warkworth, the bustling market village of Matakana offers a slice of rural community life, with its craft outlets, markets and country cafés. Matakana is a lively wine producing area, and there are plenty of choices for a lazy lunch. Many of the wineries and country cafés offer rural and al fresco settings, and most of the vineyards open their cellar doors for tastings.

Matakana Coast’s friendly villages are an ideal base for exploring the peaceful rural landscapes and scenic coastline.

Craft lovers can visit the local art studios and galleries or shop for a souvenir at the local pottery. The Morris & James pottery is famous for its colourful handpainted ceramics and you can enjoy lunch at the courtyard café. Matakana is handy to beautiful Tawharanui Regional Park and the pristine surf beach at Pakiri which is also fantastic for horse riding. Make sure you also call in to the marine reserve at Goat Island, near Leigh, which is fascinating to explore both on and under the surface.

Hauraki Gulf Islands

Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf Islands are just moments from the city but feel like a world away. Enjoy a bushwalk, listen for native birds and explore the sandy beaches that are all right on the city’s doorstep. Waiheke Island is a day-trippers’ dream and a fantastic place to take a retreat from city life. It takes just half an hour to get to Waiheke and you’ll soon ease into the easy-going island lifestyle. There is a vibrant arts and crafts scene and many vineyards dotted around the island, so make sure you sample some of the local drops. Fullers and SeaLink ferries run a regular service to Waiheke. Rangitoto Island is one of Auckland’s most iconic landmarks. Its 600-year-old volcanic cone is clearly visible from many parts of the city and you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views if you hike to the summit (259 metres high). For those who prefer a more leisurely stroll, try the easier tracks that skirt the coastline. Don’t forget your lunch as there aren’t any shops on Rangitoto. Fullers Ferries operate to Rangitoto.

Tiritiri Matangi is a nature lover’s paradise and a haven for wildlife. Unwanted predators have been eradicated, and more than 300,000 native trees planted, to make Tiritiri an open bird sanctuary for threatened native species including the saddleback, stitchbird, takahe and kokako. 360 Discovery run a ferry service from Auckland and Gulf Harbour.

Waiheke Island is a day-trippers’ dream and a fantastic place to take a retreat from city life.

Hauraki Gulf Islands

At Kawau Island, tour Mansion House, the stately residence of New Zealand’s former Governor, Sir George Grey. This scenic island has a range of walking tracks leading to Maori pa sites and the ruins of old copper mines. Access to Kawau is by boat. Catch a ferry or water taxi from Sandspit, near Warkworth, 64km north of Auckland. A little further away, Great Barrier Island is rugged and remote and has beautiful surf beaches, lush native bush, plus fantastic hiking and birdlife. The island is home to the historic remains of copper and silver mines, shipwrecks, a whaling station, timber mills and kauri dams. Great Barrier Island can be accessed by the SeaLink Ferry or there are regular flights.

Highlights • For something a bit different try some target practice and clay pigeon shooting at Wild on Waiheke. • Fullers Island Explorer tour buses meet the ferry from Waiheke and offer sightseeing tours, which include unlimited bus travel for the rest of the day.

• E xplore the lava caves, which are unique to Rangitoto Island.

Auckland International Airport

The Auckland International and Domestic Airport lies about 21km south-west of the Auckland CBD at the edge of the Manukau Harbour in Mangere. Airport Transport Travel options to and from Auckland Airport (phone 275 0789) include taxi, shuttle bus and The Airbus, as well as rental vehicles (see page 41) which may be picked up/dropped off at the airport or nearby. From central Auckland, taxis take about 30 minutes (allow an hour at peak times) and cost from $50-$65. Shuttle buses cost less (about $30 per person but less for a group) and take longer, as they pick up and drop off en route. The Airbus (freephone 0800 10 30 80, www.airbus.co.nz) runs every 15 minutes throughout the day, stopping close to most major hotels and backpackers. An adult fare costs $16 one way and $28 return. Transfers take 40-50 minutes. Driving To/From Auckland Airport From the Airport

Take the main exit road (George Bolt Memorial Drive) to the intersection with SH20. Follow the signs for Auckland City which will take you onto the motorway. Leave the motorway, turn right into Queenstown Road and continue straight ahead through the roundabout into Pah Road, which becomes Manukau Road. Continue up Manukau Road, turn left at the traffic lights into Alpers Avenue. At the end of Alpers Avenue, turn right into Gillies Avenue and join the motorway to the city, northern and western suburbs. The last exit to the city is Nelson Street (the left-hand lane).

To the Airport

On the southern motorway, take the Gillies Avenue exit. Turn right into Gillies Avenue then left at the lights into Owens Road. At the end of the road, turn right into Manukau Road (SH12) and follow the route to the airport, signposted with a white aeroplane on a blue square.
