Driving in NZ
85
Motorway on-ramps
For detailed information on the New Zealand road code, the official guidebook is available at most bookstores and petrol stations.
Road Rules You must be 21 to hire a rental car or mobile home, and show a current driving licence and/or an international licence. New Zealand drives on the left so remember to keep left at all times. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads, T-intersections and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a car to wear a seatbelt at all times while mobile. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. At roundabouts, always keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffic laws, including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell phones for nonemergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and address and vehicle registration number.
Tips for Safe Driving • Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care not to exceed the signed speed limits as fines can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor. • If you notice traffic building up behind you, pull over at a rest area to let it pass. Be extra careful when rejoining traffic. • Winding roads, difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions. • Ensure you are at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front. • Ringing bells and flashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Many railway crossings are not controlled by barrier arms. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care. search it, plan it, book it @www.jasons.co.nz

Auckland Airport
Auckland International Airport ©Images courtesy Auckland Airport
The Auckland International and Domestic Airport lies about 21km south-west of the Auckland CBD at the edge of the Manukau Harbour in Mangere.
Airport Transport Travel options to and from Auckland Airport (phone 275 0789) include taxi, shuttle bus and The Airbus, as well as rental vehicles (see page 79-84) which may be picked up/dropped off at the airport or nearby. From central Auckland, taxis take about 30 minutes (allow an hour at peak times) and cost from $50-$65. Shuttle buses cost less (about $30 per person but less for a group) and take longer, as they pick up and drop off en route. The Airbus (freephone 0800 10 30 80, www.airbus.co.nz) runs every 15 minutes throughout the day, stopping close to most major hotels and backpackers. An adult fare costs $16 one way and $26 return. Transfers take 40-50 minutes. A bus connects to the airport from Papatoetoe Station on the city’s southern train line – for details contact Maxx, phone 366 6400 or www.maxx.co.nz
